Trump Pounces to 47% Approval Rate in Harris Poll;
Seizes 52% of Likely Voters in Rasmussen Poll

Maybe America didn't like the Women in White sitting on their hands when Trump mentioned other people finding jobs, but then springing to their feet and childishly dancing around when he mentioned that they themselves had new jobs in Congress.

President Trump's job approval rating increased following Tuesday's State of the Union Address, the latest Hill-HarrisX poll found.

Forty-seven percent of registered voters contacted Thursday and Friday said that they approved of Trump's job performance, an increase of three points from the 44 percent who said the same last week.

Initial polls showed many who watched Trump's address liked it.

A CBS News-YouGov poll conducted the night of the speech found that 76 percent of respondents who watched said they approved of it. As would be expected, GOP respondents who viewed the address approved of it but almost one-third of Democratic viewers contacted for the survey said they approved of it.

Rasmussen's numbers are even better, but they usually are better.

That number is his highest since March 6, 2017, less than seven weeks after he took office. It has been even longer since Trump's 'strongly approve' and 'strongly disapprove' numbers weren't under water. They were even at 39 per cent on Monday...

Asked what Monday's numbers mean, a senior Democratic House aide confided on background: 'I don't know yet if it's horrible, but it sure isn't good.

There might be a downside here, if Trump isn't willing to put his job approval in danger again by shutting down the government or declaring a national emergency to fund the wall.

In any case, every time he does a major speech like that, his numbers go up significantly (more than reflected in polling by hostile organizations) because he seems really presidential and not the cartoon he's portrayed as by the media.

64 Democrats have made immigration a linear choice. That is, wall or no wall.

It's not that simple, and they are finding that out, which is why they threw a monkey wrench into the deal yesterday with their demand to lower the number of "beds" for detained illegal immigrants.

Trump is going to take the almost $2 billion that was in the current deal and Mulvaney, who is a federal budget genius was going to get the remainder of funds without an emergency by reapplying other monies.

Trump wins on the wall, Democrats believe he wins reelection and those approval number stay up.

Some people are slower than others. I think for guys like him the eww ick adultery factor overpowered everything else. Plus there's a need for foolish consistency in some.

What I mean by that is that some believe that if you opposed Clinton on moral grounds you have to oppose Trump as well. That to do the one, you must do the other to be consistent, show integrity, and not be a hypocrite. The problem is, Billy Bob was humping everything that moved, like it or not, right up into the oval office and beyond. There's no indication Trump has done any such thing for more than a decade, long before he announced his candidacy. That's a pretty key distinction.

Trump is and always has, played offense. In NFL terms he is an offensive coach, not a defensive coach.

It is early 3rd quarter right now, I don't see Trump going into a prevent defense. Score, then hold their offense, get the ball back, and score again.

I do see a continued pass/run combination continuing into election day.

124 I kind of get the impression that ol' two scoops doesn't much care about popularity polls. If he's smart he knows that approval ratings don't translate into elections and that someone may very well disapprove (at least at the time) of someone and yet vote for them again.

In any case, every time he does a major speech like that, his numbers go up significantly (more than reflected in polling by hostile organizations) because he seems really presidential and not the cartoon he's portrayed as by the media.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 11, 2019 02:08 PM (39g3+)

I think Trump DOES care about his poll numbers-- in that he wants credit and accolades for doing what he promised to do. He doesn't want to use cheap gimmicks ( like bombing some country) to make his numbers go up though.
I agree with your second point --and this is why the Democrats/Media don't like to let the country see Trump unfiltered. Because he looks like a president, not their carocature.

David Axelrod, of all people, changed my thinking on this.

He said he's always kind of believed that, and during Obama's '12 campaign, they implemented a strategy based on the idea that there really isn't this huge mass of undecided people in the american electorate, and instead focused on trying to ramp up turnout.

Which worked.

Some would argue Trump did a similar thing in 2016. Instead of going after the wishy-washy alleged "middle," he went full Trump and won.

That would be horrible. Rely on Republican inertia to keep a steady approval, and then court Dems. That's the mistake the GOPe made, and why they lost to Trump in the first place.

Hillary Clinton raised far more money than the President, held commanding leads among every elite sphere including law and entertainment, and manipulated the Libertarian Party as well as the cuckier parts of the GOP (that is to say, most of it).

Now they're destroying the reputation of the FBI wholesale just to get clickbait news cycles against Trump. After SOTU and Northa and Bezos, even that may be failing. And that's before they discover Ginsburg's emaciated corpse.

322 The Dems will be stronger in 2020 than they were in 2016, but so will Republicans.

A lot of people forget, Trump basically ran a shoe string campaign. Donors basically sat it out. Republicans were also still pretty divided on Trump. With many (most) elected Republican leaders actively rooting for him to lose.

You're going to see far more unity and money for Trump this time around, along with a badly fractured Democrat Party from an expensive and nasty primary.

This is why I was surprised Hillary ran in 2016. She's the same way: lazy, entitled, hates people, hates campaigning. And as far as prevention goes - it'd be so easy, if the government wanted it stopped, which it doesn't.

All they'd have to do is nab maybe five or ten offenders, high level preferably, but not necessarily, and prosecute them loudly and publicly and to the fullest extent of the law - 5 years in federal prison and a $10,000 fine for every fraudulent vote, to be served consecutively.

Once the street level fraud goons see a few people go to prison for life, that'd put a big, big damper on the Democrats' "GOTV" effort.

Jane, you are thinking logically. Stop it.

The Democrats did a long time ago when they chose to expressly abandon white people as their supporters.
Look at VA today. Decency, honesty, previous comments, are out the window. Reality is out the window for Democrats/Press Tools.

If you can find it (maybe CBS) on the internet, go watch it when Michelle comes out. Look at the audience faces. Look at their reaction when she just opens her mouth.

Keep in mind that the Kardashians are worth nearly a billion dollars. These are the same people!

Michelle will be the Queen of America, and will rule as such.

225 I hate to say it, but it's a gender thing. At the supermarket, it's
usually the men who already have a good idea how much their order is and
have the money or card already in their hand by the time they get to
the register. It's the women --who spent all afternoon studying their
coupons--who wait until the order is rung up and bagged before they
BEGIN to get the money out of the wallet that's in their
pocketbook......and then the little plastic thing with the coins comes
out.

Ugh.

435 The real question is why would endanger his poll numbers more - Government Shutdown or National Emergency.

In this situation the National Emergency is preferable. Why? It won't impact the average American much, and there is less to fear monger about. The Democrats will hype Trump doing bad things to illegals, but that will be cancelled out by their insane wing of the Democrat party who want open borders, thus making Trump look like a president simply defending common sense.

Never Trumpers will complain, but no one cares about them or their complaints except themselves. Obviously there will be court challenges, but Trump should just ignore them too.

Tie the order with the cartel problem in Mexico, the child rape and drug traffickers crossing the border, the potential for armed conflict in Venezuela, and American wages. The U.S. congress has simply abdicated their responsibilities by refusing to work together, much less with the President in this crisis.

From what I can see, there are more Americans who are really willing to fight for the wall, than against it. Of course, some people say a wall is silly, or don't think it is needed, but they are not going to make a fight over it. You know the famous enthusiasm gap.
