Many suffer personal physical, emotional and spiritual ailments and life's challenges are taxing and burdensome upon our souls. May you alleviate those worries and multiply our time in ways that give us relief. We see the depravity and cultural rot that has taken root in our nation and we suffer and are angered by it. May your will be done in our country such that we may rejoice in your justice. I really like the use of stripes here. Start at the bottom: The light, thin lines of the tile floor with just a hint of stripe in the mosaic. Suddenly we're bombarded with the orange, white and black tiger pelt. Above that, we have orange marble with light white stripes. Farther up, a thin band of white marble with black stripes, then a plain white wall that repeats the thin black lines in the floor. At the very top, two patches of striped white marble for accent and balance. THEN, in her dress, the vertical folds counter the (mostly) horizontal stripes in the wall and floor but recall the stripes in the tiger skin.
Then we have color... Using a green for the dress instead of blue eliminates the risk of clashing with the orange. Purple does the same from the other side of the color wheel as well as contrasts the green AND the orange. Green, purple and orange are the triad of secondary colors. If I had to complain about anything, I don't like the form, pattern or color scheme of her head. Being this dark form in the visual center is way too distracting to me. The painting highlights the contrast between previous achievements and present sloth.
Some brave individual killed a ferocious tiger and many men toiled and prepared the marble that she leans against. She lounges on the amazing labors of others with indifference and detachment. It's quite sad how many artists end up killing themselves, traditionalist and modernists. Among it's many purposes, art should also be therapy. A way for the artist to express and relieve his inner demons and cares. I'm always surprised when it doesn't work. And yet, art therapy seems to be pretty effective. Not perfect, but helpful nonetheless.

Many of John William Godward's paintings have this classical Greece or Roman feel: the female pose, often idle, the stonework, even the animal furs. The paintings are very attractive and his ability to capture the marble and other stonework is remarkable. I like the way he contrasts bright colors against the darker such as the model's clothes and the tiger skin. Godward had wonderful talent.
Having said that, the painting makes me think of chick lit books. Women might enjoy taking note of the clothing and cushioning and identify with the pose. It is pleasant but not exciting. There's not much, beside the technical facility, to attract men. IMHO. Posted by: JTB at February 15, 2019 10:03 AM (bmdz3) 182

Posted by: exdem13 at February 15, 2019 10:03 AM (W+kMI) 183
Oh, it was all the same girl.
However, a more probable reason [for him moving to Rome] was his love for one of his models, an Italian girl, who had grown tired of living in England and decided to return home. Once again, we need to understand Godward's relationship with this girl. It was not a case of mutual love. Godward's love for and devotion to the woman was, sadly for him, not reciprocated. She put up with him and was happy to accept the fees for modelling but as far as she was concerned that was all it was. https://bit.ly/2IoEDIm Posted by: Bandersnatch at February 15, 2019 10:04 AM (fuK7c) 184

The Russians filmed some Sherlock Holmes stories back in the 80s, and they did them very well. Vassily Livanov is a terrific Holmes. But their version of Hound of the Baskervilles is a bit of a shock, because they introduced a lot of humour into it, and Hound does NOT support a humorous tone, at least to an English/Anglophone audience. I think it's because it's almost a sort of ghost story, and the English take ghost stories very seriously.

Spectator article on "the bill" is awesome. Trump should use it as a template (via Stephen Miller) for another speech, with the climax being that he must veto the bill (or surrender America to 5 billion fake refugees). "Powerful oligarchs are looking to run the world for their enrichment, with citizens serving them"
crescendo starts with emphasis on our unique American liberty, builds with grand points in history to protect freedoms for Americans (and the Western world) ... moving toward the fight against corporate/globalist desire to control us and "conglomerate" us into indebted consumer widgets. Walls work ... (work in El Paso example) ... and we still bring in one million per year legally, more than any other nation. Trump's (Miller's) SOTU was awesome (except cratering on the H1Bs and expanding mass legal immigration) ... but the follow up speech is needed, to show Congress is serving the commies and the corporations, ignoring/punishing the working American. Paint their dystopian world of 2030, if we don't stop their anti-American infiltration. (75% would agree, if scripted to hit the main points ... only legal merit based immigration, not welfare state for the world) Posted by: illiniwek at February 15, 2019 10:33 AM (Cus5s) 341
