This is Insane This is a LONG read (3 articles, the successive ones are linked at the bottom of each previous one). It's also an example of excellent investigative reporting that's become all too rare. The backstory: 2 years ago, a reporter was contacted by a lady who worked at a circus. She said she had a story to tell about how James Brown and his third wife were both murdered. He goes to see her and she tells a long, rambling and disjointed story, a real Southern Gothic tale, about being raped by Brown, his wife being murdered, crooked accountants, shady lawyers, murder for hire, drugs, sex, organized crime...really, the story has it all. She presents a plastic bin full of stuff to back up her claim. I'm sure reporters get these kind of stories all the time, from crackpots of all shapes and sizes, but as this reporter digs deeper, to his amazement he finds that the stuff she presented as evidence seems to be backing up her claims. So he digs a little more.... Does he come up with smoking gun proof that Brown was murdered? No, he doesn't. But he does seem to verify enough to prove that at the very least, there was some crazy shit going on around James Brown. If it was a Mythbusters episode, they'd deem the story “plausible”. It's worth the time to read, if only for the sheer insanity of it all. THE CIRCUS SINGER AND THE GODFATHER OF SOUL Living on the Fringe American anarchist 'John Galton' shot dead in Acapulco So he runs from America because (drugs) he wants to live unencumbered by "The Man", he settles in a Mexican town that if famed for it's (drugs) lawlessness. There he pursues his interests (drugs), free from interference from authorities, until he is shot dead by (drug cartel) unknown assailants. How could such a thing happen? Chesterton's Fence The biggest problem America is suffering from is the fact that the hippie generation is now in charge, and has been for a while. While not unknown in any generation, that particular generation has (in general) a marked belief that anything “old” is “bad” and thus must be changed. Now, some old things are bad and do need to be changed, but just because something is “old”, doesn't mean that it is “bad”. Some old things are the distilled wisdom of uncounted generations of human experience. Like disciplining children, for example. I'd be willing to be that the two fine gentlemen above had very little discipline from their parents, for example (also possible but a little less likely is that they were rebelling against too much discipline). Here's a terrible example of how that attitude transformed a model school into a hellhole: Investigation: In NYC School Where a Teenager Was Killed, Students & Educators Say Lax Discipline Led to Bullying, Chaos, and Death See also the shooting in Broward County last year. That asshole was only able to buy his guns legally because the school system made a concentrated effort to NOT report or prosecute him for the stuff he did do prior to the shooting. He SHOULD have had a record that would have prevented the purchase, but since Broward Country decided to “solve” their problems with bad behavior by not reporting them, he wasn't. The result was 17 dead. How on earth could anyone guess that kids who are not given boundaries and discipline would misbehave? Calling the Moron Horde! Family asks for cards to make WWII veteran's birthday special Shouldn't be too hard to drop this man a quick line, should it? The Supreme Court has agreed to temporarily block a Louisiana abortion law from taking effect. We went to see Peter Jackson's "They Shall Not Grow Old" last night..
It was really delightful.. He was invited by the British Imperial War Museum Archives to do something interesting and novel with movie footage they have from WW I. Amazing what he did with it.. he took crappy old grainy footage and standardize it to 24 frames per second.. then colorized a good portion of it... And he used vocal history accounts by WW I vets that were recorded in the 60's and 70's as narration. It only covered the Western Front of UK soldiers.. but it was stunning.. Posted by: WisRich at February 07, 2019 10:22 PM (OAlmw) Completely consistent for Roberts. I'll say this one more time and then shut up. Roberts doesn't give two shits about the "Law" - but he cares quite a bit about the reputation of the Supreme Court. You can trace every fucked up ruling by Roberts back to one thing ... will the Court be obeyed ? Because in the case of ObamaCare - Roberts knew that Obama was going to push that shit forward anyway. So Roberts made a ruling to save face for the Court. Same thing here. Roberts is calculating that the Left will riot over this shit (they will), while the Right will as they're told (they will). So he's putting the Law down on those that will listen. If he thought Louisiana would tell the Supreme Court to go fuck itself - he would have sided with the Conservatives instead. That's all there is to it. Posted by: GoldDust at February 07, 2019 10:35 PM (DQRtz) 144

Amputated the leg in under 22 and a half minutes (the patient died afterwards in the ward from hospital gangrene; they usually did in those pre-Listerian days). He amputated in addition the fingers of his young assistant (who died afterwards in the ward from hospital gangrene). He also slashed through the coat tails of a distinguished surgical spectator, who was so terrified that the knife had pierced his vitals he dropped dead from fright. That was the only operation in history with a 300 percent mortality.

I read a pretty good mystery several months ago "Lady in the Smoke''. Takes place in England early fairly early in the steam locomotive era. One of the main characters was a railroad surgeon. I guess there were so many train accidents that it required a medical speciality of its own.

James Brown should have been locked up for life after he had his PCP-fueled lunatic romp throguh that church, where he was shooting off a shotgun or whatever it was. We can do better. Why, look at some of the world talent that is just plain ole smoking us. Kim Jung Un, with his counterfeiting currencies, bank hacking, drug dealing and excellent smuggling ops manages to keep his bankroll fat and healthy. The Iranian ayatollahs are estimated to have looted northward of $100 fucking billions; not bad for a buncha ragheads. When Chavez took over Venezuela, they had 50 generals; now they have 4,000 generals and they are all millionaires. Man we suck. Then there is China, an entire nation of thieves. Thieving is their national pastime. But here in the US, we have to import our crooks. Think not that the secret word goes for nought; lying lips were ever the soul's destroying. Death for its goal, is not life's aim missed? Labours he well, that labours to bring doom about his ears? Death was never of God's fashioning; not for his pleasure does life cease to be; what meant his creation, but that all created things should have being? No breed has he created on earth but for its thriving; none carries in itself the seeds of its own destruction. Think not that mortality bears sway on earth; no end nor term is fixed to a life well lived . . . It is the wicked that have brought death on themselves, by word and deed of their own; court death, and melt away in its embrace, keep tryst with it, and lay claim to its partnership. --Wisdom 1:11-16 Posted by: logprof at February 08, 2019 01:16 AM (e7oj4) 357

A joke I heard from a friend of mine:
A drummer walks into a music store, because he wants to broaden his musical horizons. He wants to grow as a musician. So he goes up to the salesperson working there and says, "You know, I'm looking for a new instrument to learn, so... how about I buy that red trumpet over there, and... I guess that big old accordion too, what the hell, right?" And the salesperson, perplexed, replies: "Well, I suppose you can have the fire extinguisher if you really want, but the radiator has to stay." A modest proposal:
Let the Union re-institute slavery. (hear me out) There are demonstrably millions of people living within the United States that have no problem whatsoever living as serfs, as peasants, as property of The State. So why don't we simply let them? Voluntary enrollment. You want to live as a ward of The State? Right on. You do you. You get assigned a job, and you do it, and you have all your needs provided for you As The State Sees Fit. You shirk? Off to the labor camps with you (canals, etc.). You shirk that? Shirkers get the bullet. The rest of us, though, you can right jolly well LEAVE THE FUCK ALONE. It's a good plan, right? Posted by: Warai-otoko at February 08, 2019 02:20 AM (Ct55T) 374

Morning Horde. Had a fitful night so I gave up and brewed some covfefe Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at February 08, 2019 05:36 AM (di1hb) I had a problem getting to sleep tonight too. Problem is after eating a healthy lunch and sitting here reading I will nod off and sleep. Then can't get to sleep when I need to. I got up this morning, built my EMT links and then scanned about 15 or so slides with my new Kodak slide/negative scanner. That thing is better than sliced bread. I am looking at pictures I too while I was in the Navy over 40 years ago that I haven't seen in a long time. Posted by: Vic at February 08, 2019 05:40 AM (mpXpK) I work from home and, meeting schedule permitting, often take a mid-afternoon nap. Did not yesterday. Most certainly will today, though. G'morning, horde! (Except a certain person who, believe it or not, seems kind of like a mean-spirited jerk.)
The wind is literally howling right now and the current temp is 6. It would be a great day to curl up with a book and a latte and a cat in my lap, but I think I may have screwed up some paperwork so I have to go in and really go back over everything I did. I hate when something strange happens and I think I may have made a mistake, but I'm not sure exactly where in the pipeline it occurred. If I did screw-up it's fixable, but not without some back and forth hassle I don't have time for right now. Sigh. As for Winter? I can't even anymore. Where's the Heat Miser when you need him? ... Posted by: GoldDust at February 07, 2019 10:35 PM (DQRtz) That's highly plausible. But I still have one hope about him. I don't recall him twisting the Constitution. Statutory interpretation is another matter, as in the "tax" pretzel. It does also make one point. We shouldn't be rushing important cases to SCOTUS just yet. We need another justice. (I also suspect that, if he knows we're winning without him, Roberts is more likely to join in.) In that case they cut off whole towns and subdivisions. They do that during periods when load is reaching a critical point where all available supply is in service and loads are about to exceed that supply. As far as I know they have not cut off individual homes yet, even if they can do it. Posted by: Vic at February 08, 2019 07:02 AM (mpXpK) 541

CA and PGE are a special case. The NIMBYs, NAMBYs, and NOPEs have tied up PGnE so bad they haven't been able to meet grid load on their own for decades. Mostly they buy huge amounts of power from WA State which creates its own problems with what is known as the "Western Doughnut".
Posted by: Vic at February 08, 2019 07:17 AM (mpXpK) 564
Closest thing to actual control of your individual electrical consumption that I have seen is the installation of a 'smart' thermostat, which allows the power company to control either your thermostats set point, or cycle the thermostat internally to 'Off' and 'on' to reduce peak grid consumption.
We have both a smart meter, and a smart gas meter. Nowhere internally is a device that can be remotely operated to interrupt power flow. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 08, 2019 07:18 AM (cqNba) 565

That is why it is nice to be on the same sector of the grid as the local retirement community - they won't shut off power to people medically dependent on electrical equipment. TX has allowed utilities to deviate from the standard 60Hz during peak usage. Some of the many problems is that high grade UPS see this as a problem and consume more energy to restore the 60Hz; also MANY motors (think A/C compressors) are tuned for 60Hz and work less efficiently using more power and may start cooking bearings with the extra heat when the outside temperatures are already over 100F.
