Study: Journalists Drink Too Much, Are Bad At Managing Emotions, And Operate At a Lower Level Than the Average Person

This study is from 2017, but it's never been more true or more salient.

It is based on a small study, so I'd like to offer this caveat: it is undoubtedly 100% true.

Journalists' brains show a lower-than-average level of executive functioning, according to a new study, which means they have a below-average ability to regulate their emotions, suppress biases, solve complex problems, switch between tasks, and show creative and flexible thinking.

They score very highly on the Repeat What Other Journalists Are Saying on Twitter Scale, however. Among the most tractable, programmable people on earth, in fact.

orangemanracist.jpg

The study, led by Tara Swart, a neuroscientist and leadership coach, analysed 40 journalists from newspapers, magazines, broadcast, and online platforms over seven months. The participants took part in tests related to their lifestyle, health, and behaviour.

...

The results showed that journalists' brains were operating at a lower level than the average population, particularly because of dehydration and the tendency of journalists to self-medicate with alcohol, caffeine, and high-sugar foods.

Brian Stelter just emailed me to say, "Hi, my name is Tater, and I likes me some taters."

Forty-one percent of the subjects said they drank 18 or more units of alcohol a week, which is four units above the recommended weekly allowance. Less than 5% drank the recommended amount of water.

However, in interviews conducted in conjunction with the brain profile results, the participants indicated they felt their jobs had a lot of meaning and purpose...

You don't say? No shit, really?

Didn't they just spend $5.5 million on a Super Bowl ad praising themselves?

...

Journalists scored lower on:

Executive function. As well as the traits mentioned above, low scores for executive function also suggest poor sleep, nutrition, exercise, and mindfulness. Many participants reported they had no time for breaks while working.

You need high executive function to code, which is probably why they get so angry when you suggest that they learn to code.

Also, executive function is important in controlling one's emotions, which is why the explode like infants when you suggest they learn to code.

Silencing the mind, which is related to the ability to have thoughts without getting distracted by them, or a powerful ability to focus. Low scores indicate the opposite, suggesting journalists have a hard time preventing themselves from worrying about the future or regretting the past.

Um, and spending all day on Twitter and planning their next #SickBurn Tweet and their next Twitter Clapback.

...

The results, however, showed that the journalists were on average no more physically stressed than the average person. The blood tests showed that their levels of cortisol -- known as the stress hormone -- were mostly normal.

That's because, while they do deal withe pressure of short turn-arounds and quick deadlines, they have a powerful psychological advantage that helps them manage stress: they are innately very, very lazy and work as little as humanly possible which turns out to be even less work than the average human would guess is possible.

So that helps.

Related: I Have Seen the Media's Future, and It Involves Writing Checks With Lots of Zeroes to the Many Victims of Its Defamations and Witch-Hunts: Mark Hemingway at the Federalist.

I don't think they'll be able to plead Impaired Executive Function as a defense, though it would amuse me to see them try.

Thanks to this guy:

110 If you've ever had any interaction with journalists, you knew all along that they are not the cream of the crop. They don't care about accuracy. Decades ago I was interviewed by phone by a newspaper reporter who was doing a fluff piece on an elderly co-worker of mine. The newspaper article contained a direct quote, attributed to me. It was something I had never said. It wasn't negative or damaging. It was just that I hadn't said it or anything like it.

I'd seen that reporter, and others from that newspaper, in other situations, and they were not an impressive lot.

There were a couple of other instances where they were reporting on tragic events involving people I knew, where the reporters' behavior was just disgusting.

I'll put it this way, they have no conscience about harassing parents who've had a child die.

Hemingway comes to mind as a profoundly high functioning and creative drunk. These guys are NOT Hemingway. As a matter of fact, Hemingway might have been the last, actual, talented (drunk) journalist who ever lived. And he died over 50 years ago. If he were alive today he would probably walk up and punch Acosta in the mouth, turn him around, put his foot up his *ss and throw him out of the White House Press Room saying "Get the f*ck out of here ya Goddamn sissy - yer not a journalist" and then take Trump sport fishing after which they would get drunk on single malt and smoke cigars and then he would write a bestselling book called "The Orange Man and the Sea".

Once again - "#LearnToCode?" Nope - journalists are not qualified - this is more apt:

195 Ian Fleming was a reporter, and a bit of a drunk. He's be a drunk by today's standards, at least. He was even more of a cigarette fiend.

But the strange thing is, even though Ian Fleming was what I would call (By today's standards) a high functioning alcoholic, in a really good interview with his friend and esteemed colleague Raymond Chandler, you see the difference between a high-functioning alcoholic who can keep shit together and a total rummy gutter drunk.

He also is an amazing asshole when it comes to politics, so...

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 08, 2019 06:40 PM (wYseH)

Yes - Hamill was a dick - but a fairly solid writer of prose . . . and a complete drunk. Mike Macalary was like that too - spent most of his time drunk at the bar at Ryan McFaddens. Saw him/spoke to him there loads of times (I used to work in the Daily News Building - or, as I liked to call it "The Daily Planet"). Also a complete asshole, and a drunk, but a decent writer. Not sure how he did all his "investigative work" since he was always at the bar. I always assumed he just made sh*t up . . . . and seeing the way modern journalists operate . . . he probably did.

292 I confess to having spent most of my life as a journalist, mostly in newspapers but also a major network I won't mention. But I am now doing something else, and this new vocation has opened my eyes to how insulated I was about work life in actual professions. In journalism there is a lot of pressure to make the deadline. It's intense and there's lots of cussing and slamming things. But when you've hit the deadline, you're done till tomorrow. You're still wired, and its late, and bars are open, but today's widget has been made.

But now, in my new field, I've got 20 long-range deadlines, I move each one incrementally each day, and I have a very powerful and impatient boss waiting for each of them. My job never recedes from my conscious mind. I worry about it constantly and crave sleeo, not for rest but for release from consciousness. My wife and kids are shooting flares into the sky to claim my attention.

And I realize this is the reality for most breadwinners. I liked being a journalist. I was an outlier both in my politics, my neutrality and fastidiousness (related), but I still didn't know what it is like to take my work home to the people I was doing it for, and have nothing left for them.

I do now, and I can say it is a special hell on earth for principled men who love their families so much that they are willing to be forgotten or, worse, scorned in memory.

293 >>>As I working journalist, I can confirm the truth of all of this -- especially the alcoholism.

It's kind of amazing how many of my discussions with colleagues revolve around drinking. The only journalists I know who DON'T have a drinking problem are the recovering alcoholics.

...

i think the problem is that certain jobs promote/require a lot of networking, and you really can't network in too many places besides bars and restaurants and mostly bars, so people just wind up drinking an awful lot for no good reason and saying 'Well, it's part of my job."

Anytime someone can say that a vice, like being on Twitter all day supposedly to "build your brand," is "part of your job" and therefore productive and not just a vice and waste of time, it encourages a lot of poor choices.

303 @292 SloPitch Whiffer :

I don't have all life's answers but I do think the answer is not self-effacement through work to the point that your family scorns your memory. There are days and sometimes weeks when we have to suck it up, but family life is not a sprint, and I don't think it is an option to come in last in that race.
I think you feel the same way and are expressing your frustration that you can't be the you that you want to be right now, which is to say the husband and Dad that you know you can be.
I wish you luck friend. Sounds like your heart's in the right place. Just don't give up on the goals that you know are the most important.

She kind of shoots down the whole idea that anyone can be an "intellectual" simply by parroting what CNN says to.
