My company's swanky headquarters has all these small pools and water features on it. One day, someone brought in a turtle and let it loose in one of them.
People liked it and thought it was cute. Others decided to add turtles. After a few months, the campus was crawling with turtles and the company had to bring in some outfit that could collect them all and relocate them - then immediately introduced a "no more turtles on campus" policy.

Normal progression for an idea: 1. bar conversation, 2. back of a napkin, 3) PowerPoint, 4) development and testing, 5. work out problems, 6) possible success. They sound like they might be halfway through step 2. Given some of the lack of details they offer and the lack of publications cited, they may have moved straight to the fund-raising step.
I'll hope that they are the isolated case of sanity and under-promising for cancer cures. I'd even bet my life on it (via a clinical trial), but I don't expect to get the opportunity.

It is one of the greatest contradictions I have ever seen. America has "high" infant mortality because we have an extremely permissive standard for it. Many US births would *not* be considered live births in Europe.
As a civilization, we have put more into saving children and mothers than any other civilization in history. Vast medical, financial and scientific apparatus are arrayed in the mission of saving children.
On the other side, a vast political apparatus is arrayed in the mission of murdering them.
This is irreconcilable. A contradiction cannot stand forever - it will destroy itself. One of these two things is going to be seriously curtailed. I think if socialized medicine is enacted, then the former will disappear. If medical care - even with how desperately flawed and insane our system is - remains private, I think the pendulum is going to swing the other way on abortion.
Neither will likely disappear completely, but our current "contradictory extremes" situation will not last.

It actually is missing everything that would make it sound like solid science. Like mentioning that it would require DNA sequencing of the individual cancer in order to design the treatment for the patient. Or that cancer is heterogeneous and mutates rapidly (they kinda admit that) and that current treatments are somewhat ineffective because only part of the cancer is killed, but some mutates to evade the treatment and comes roaring back. Thus, likely repeated treatments, each requiring a separate DNA sequencing of the growing tumor cells. They do admit that they don't actually know how to design their treatment to attack the tumor cells (that's part of this years work), but that is well hidden by the PR-speak of the announcement.
Plus, the research doctors I deal with at NIH don't seem to know much about it, meaning it apparently hasn't been presented at the major conferences yet.

I had to make sure to either renew emissions in early November here in Atl, or clear the computer and drive 100 miles before getting an inspection. They have to throw a code 3 times in a row on startup to light up the MIL.

This is what I'm hoping. The light was on all throughout my commute and nothing seemed amiss so I'll reseal the gas tank lid in the morning and see if the light goes away if it warms up. Wish me luck 'cause I can't afford a new car.

Take the vehicle to Autozone if the simple fixes don't work -- they'll do an engine diagnostic for free, and give you the print-out from the code reader!

Go to any auto parts store, like Pep Boys, or Autozone, or O'Reilly's. Nearly all now will plug a code reader into the cars diagnostic port, and download the trouble codes free of of charge. And the code reader can tell the car's ECM to erase trouble codes, too.

I have done this. The failing part turned out to be a sensor you could actually see by simply opening the hood, and could replace with a screwdriver.
So Autozone got to sell me a sensor.
They know what they're doing with this service.

I saw a robot lawnmower at my local Ag equipment dealer last summer. Quite expensive, too. I have a riding mower. Mowing the grass (I hesitate to call it a "lawn") is a nice, contemplative chore which I never mind doing.

The check engine light doesn't seem to have anything to actually do with the engine. It seems to have to do more with the exhaust. My experience with it is, 80's VW Rabbit, randomly comes on at over 32000 miles to get you in you mateniece, other cars sme oxygen sensor bad.

The Albin-Vega 27 ft. sloop, made in Sweeden, is one of the most successful North Sea racing / cruising boats in it's class. A great many of them have made Trans Atlantic crossings, in either direction.
Not *quite* standing headroom for me belowdecks, but a serviceable, traditional layout for a boat it's size.
Built like a tank, it's made to endure truly frightening seas.
Frankly, those Baltic and North Sea races, and the sailors that race 'em, are more nuts that I want to sail with. I'm more of a "toss out the parachute anchor and ride it out" kind of CRUISING sailor... those guys though? "Damn the Breaking Pyramid Waves, and hank-on more sail!"
Watching what they can do with a boat though, is pure magic. It's like watching a top PGA golfer at his career-peak, just doing things that defy physics with the helm, main and jib.
Sail with one of those guys sometime. If you dare.

Indeed they do. And you have to give the manufacturers their due for adopting the ECM technology that makes this possible. It is, in fact, now possible, for an owner to diagnose and repair a large number of faults with sensors and/or actuators that would make their car run poorly.

Probably the same one that WalMart sells in their "as seen on TV" rack. Harbor Freight periodically has sales on a small code reader made by Autel, that you probably ought not to pay more than about 40 dollars for. I have one, and it does the job of reading codes just fine. The high-priced "scan tools" sold to the trade can do a lot more than that, but I cannot justify owning one.

Yes but, making the warning light say check engine is to scare the driver. Increased emissions or reduced fuel economy isn't the end of the world, or worth trying to scare the driver into not driving the car.

The "Check Engine" light means the onboard computer has detected some fault. Said fault could be any number of things. In can range from something innocuous to something that needs attention.
It's a simple matter to figure it out. You plug a code reader/analyzer into the OBDII port and read out what the trouble code is.

They aren't trying to scare you, so much as to alert you to a possible impending problem. If there is a problem that is immediately perilous, the check engine light should blink rapidly, or the ECM may put the vehicle into limp-home mode.

What's amazing to me is the performance data you can extract (simple readers won't do this -- I've got one that does, but not on all models).
The thing can note the occasional misfire and identify what cylinder and keeps a count. If count per some period exceeds a certain value, it will trip the idiot light.
I got to looking at that data on my old '04 Crown Vic. I got rid of it a while back, but IIRC, the #7 cyl was misfiring ever so often. I remember reading up on that, but I've forgotten all I read about it.

Right after Christmas the check engine light came on again. After keeping it for a week, they informed me that the same sensor failed, and it was under warranty so there was no charge this time.
That dealer has treated me pretty well.

1. Random number after 32000 miles to get you in dealership for standard maintance.
2. Faulty censor.
3. Faulty censor.
Non of those should be check engine, check engine sounds serious and expensive. Until you dig into the owners manual.

The heater fan in The Zettai Family Tankster (a mid-sized pickup) stopped working (this was just a few weeks ago.) and I replaced some sensor in the duct work beneath the dashboard... I didn't need any codes read and a quick search on teh Go Ogles lead me to the problem... I was tempted to order the part from Amazin' but the local auto parts store had it in stock that day at a lower price!
So, anyway, I went to put the replacement part in and found the existing bit burnt to a crisp and fused to the snap connector, which I just cut out and spliced the five wires together directly... You'd have been proud of me!

Many cars have a rubber flex hose from the filler neck to the tank proper. And there is often also a vent hose circa 1/2" in diameter to vent air out to the filler neck as the tank is being filled. A loose clamp or deterioration of either of those hoses will result in a fuel smell after a fill, as will a failed gasket where the fuel level sending unit (which now often contains the in-tank electric fuel pump) mounts to the tank.

I took it to my local shop and they said they could not smell it or find a leak in any of the tank filler hoses. On the one hand, I think they have been around gasoline for too long and so are nose blind, on the other, I was thinking it is really hard to check the fuel pump without removing the gas tank other than to say it is working.

Be careful with replacing sensors that allegedly are defective.
All any trouble code does is tell you there is a problem in a particular CIRCUIT. An enormous amount of the problems I have fixed were NOT parts related, but in the wiring that transmits the sensor reading.
Or a faulty vacuum hose.
If it were me, I'd have the code read, and then cleared to see if it would repeat.

Which is why I have a code reader. So I can do just that. I have two vehicles which repeatedly set codes. The '97 Suburban sets a code for "O2 sensor #2 out of range". It does this because there is a warped flange in the exhaust pipe, causing a leak upstream of the sensor. Engine runs just fine, though. And the '02 Suburban has a leak in the rear vapor canister, caused when the vehicle got rear-ended. I made an attempt to mend the canister, but it leaks a little. Does not affect engine operation at all. I clear codes on both vehicles periodically, just so I won't miss new ones, should they occur.

I've had problems that had physical symptoms but would not show a code.
Now if I had the pro setup for about 10k+ it might show up there.
I've had two time a miss not show up as a miss. Yet you can hear it and feel it and mileage and power is off.
One was a Ranger 03. Still don't know what was wrong I got rid of it.
The other is a 99 dodge stratus with a miss. Turns out it was a tiny break in one of the intake manifold gaskets. Only found that when I heard some whistling while I was checking something else. Tracked it down and stuck my finger at the spot and had improved idle and no whistle. Replaced gasket, runs fine. NO CODE.

I just drove this one back to Galveston from Orlando. It did OK, but it's a less refined ride than the Accord, to be sure.

Simple answer is that not all functions are monitored in cylinder-by-cylinder detail. That will probably change, if it has not changed already. It would not surprise me to see a torque sensor shaft in the front of the transmission that would output an electrical pulse proportional to the torque pulse made by each cylinder in turn. Then the ECM could go, "hmmm, #2 cylinder is putting out 12% less torque than the mean for the other seven, all of which are within 5% of the mean. Let's keep an eye on that puppy."

It's common and SOP for all the rr's to do this to keep switches from freezing. All it is is a long burner tube hooked to to a nearby propane tank.
We even have them in Oklahoma in some areas.

Back in the '90s, on a Gold Wing ride out of San Antonio (with a wee detour through Orlando, FL), I pulled up to a gas pump in New Jersey, intending to stay fueled through my run into Times Square and on to Connecticut for a next-day business meeting.
Pulled up to the pump, unlatched the fuel lid on the bike, and grabbed the fuel handle on the hose at the pump.
Actually had the first 1/10th gallon in the tank, when the attendant arrived at a sprint in a dead panic.

Yes and it's probably an issue of what's useful to the end users - normies.
The technically useful term should be a rate of heat transfer due to a combination of ambient temperature, wind speed and moisture taking into account conduction, convection, radiation, and the enthalpy of vaporization from skin moisture.
From that you can calculate how quickly your exposed surface skin area will lose heat and it's equivalent rate of temperature drop.
But no one but autists would understand or do the calc or make used of the results. Even with aspreadsheet.
So imperfect wind-chill temperature gets used instead.
Damn normies.

Right now there are only two main oppositional forces, the Democrat Party and Donald Trump.
The GOP to the extent they are relevant at all, are acting as an oppositonal force towards Trump and his supporters and the GOP base generally.

Abortion to the extent it can be tolerated by a morally civil society should be relegated to pre-viability and not a nano second after.
You don't want a baby, fine, there are thousands of couples who are incapable of having children and are looking to adopt.

There are cases where a pregnant woman has been murdered and the perp is charged with two counts of murder, the woman's murder as well as the death of her unborn child.

I see Rand Paul got his judgment in his civil lawsuit against the nutjob neighbor who attacked him. $375,000 in punitive damages, $200,000 for pain and suffering, and @$8,000 for medical expenses. (I assume the low medical expenses award was just for the deductibles that Paul had to pay. Should have been for the entire medical expenses, but maybe that's a KY law thing.)
Not as much as I would have given Paul, especially after the nutty neighbor was only sentenced to 30 days' jail time for the vicious assault, but still a sizable amount of money.

Mention the obvious about the suspects will get you accused of those crime you mention, possibly banned. Yeah, I don't know why the crazy neighbor was not made to pay the actual medical expenses that Paul had to pay (whether through his insurer or not). Why should the neighbor benefit from the fact that Paul had insurance? He still caused the injuries, deliberately, and he should have to pay for the actual costs of those injuries to the defendant and/or his insurer. But the lawsuit was in KY, and maybe KY law doesn't allow plaintiffs to recover insured medical expenses or something.
In any event, I'd expect that Paul's medical expenses were well over $100,000, given that he was in the hospital for weeks.

We had those in the river bottoms by the shop where I worked. One day my buddy, Cornbread brought his bow in along with a cooler and a couple of gallons of buttermilk. One thing about that alleged attack makes zero sense. Why was he still wearing that "noose" around his neck 45 minutes after he was attacked?
I suspect he was looking for a little "strange" and hit on the wrong guy and got beat down and made up the MAGA story to cover up.

Something I would like to see (but probably never will) is a politician taking an approach to abortion similar to that which Lincoln took toward slavery when he was running for president.
Remember that Lincoln did NOT run as an abolitionist demanding an immediate end to slavery in all states; he ran as a "free soiler" who did not want slavery to expand beyond the states in which it was already legal. Abolitionists of the time thought he was way too soft on slavery -- but he ended up being the president who got credit for freeing the slaves.
A "Lincolnian" approach to abortion, IMO, would mean allowing abortion ONLY within the limits outlined in Roe v Wade (and only in Roe, not in Doe or any other the other, subsequent cases that broadened the "health" exception, etc.) and no further.
A "go no further than what Roe allowed" approach would mean no abortion after viability or the first trimester; narrowly defined health exceptions; no taxpayer funding or mandatory insurance coverage for abortion; yes to parental/spousal/father consent; yes to conscience protection clauses, etc. It wouldn't be perfectly pro-life but it would be a heck of a lot better, or less bad, that what the left is trying to push now.
Of course, if any pol IRL ran on that kind of platform he/she would be blasted by both sides: pro-aborts would scream about how horribly misognyist and anti-choice they were (duh) but at least some pro-lifers would say he/she was being too wishy washy by allowing any abortion at all. But who knows.

So far their only independent "proof" (after reportedly looking through hundreds of hours of surveillance video) consists of a blurry video of two bundled-up people (can't even tell if they're male or female) walking on a sidewalk -- which is proof of nothing but two people walking on a sidewalk.
Color me skeptical. Severely skeptical.

That mountain lion sighting was when some stupid Millennials looking for a place to walk their dog off-leash was trespassing through the heavily wooded Austin Archery Club.
We have signs ALL OVER THE PLACE warning people of the danger of being down range of archers. For those who are familiar with archery, it isn't just about bags with concentric circles (that would be field archery) - we have extensive 3D range for practice and competition.
A 3D target range is made up of life-sized, realistic three dimensional rubber critters that have subtle markings for scoring.
These retards will stumbling through the brush with their dog crashing around where they lost of their dog but picked up on our mountain lion 3D target that was still.
They bragged that they were so stealthy that they were able to creep up on the critter (apparently not enough to notice the metal stand holding the critter up).
Then after studying this rubber mountain lion, they slinked out and informed for park ranger of this dangerous creature.
We had to close down the archery range for a day or two to get this straightened out.

So on the second coldest night of the year, a Hollywood actor, bundled up against -20 degree wind chill, was recognized by two "fans" in the dead of 0200 hours, on Lower Water Street (a known hangout for the seedy underbelly of MAGA supporters?) who happened to be carrying a canister of bleach and a piece of string, just in case they ran across a black, gay, Hollywood actor wrapped up against the elements in a place known more for homelessness than for the star set being seen in public.
Sounds completely believable, especially the part about this being "MAGA country" hours after the first interview and the insistence that body cameras being turned off (for a guy who makes his living in front of cameras) and the seeking of medical attention after (A) turning down an ambulance and (B) heading to the hospital hours later. Our contacts say that the "persons of interest" happened to wander into a camera frame and seem to have had nothing to do with the event in question - but the bosses want to look like they're doing something to appease Rahm and the Hollywood money people - Empire is losing money and viewers - so it's "All Hands on Dicks!"
