But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude. Alexis de Tocqueville Quote III Let’s speak truth about our economy. Our economy today is not working for working people. The cost of living is going up, but paychecks aren't keeping up. For so many Americans, a decent retirement feels out of reach and the American Dream feels out of touch. The truth, is our people are drowning in debt. Record student loan debt. Car loan debt. Credit card debt. Resorting to payday lenders because you can’t keep up with the bills. People are drowning in America. We have a whole generation of Americans living with the sinking fear that they won't do as well as their parents. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) Living in Fly Over Country isn't so bad. I nearly vomited on my way to work today. I don’t have stomach flu, and I wasn’t hungover. What did I see? My walk to the subway takes me down a stretch of East 124th street, which is lined, daily, with human urine and excrement. I usually manage by holding my breath as I walk at a brisk pace, averting my eyes from the sights. Sometimes, I’ll walk along East 125th street, which has fewer recessed doorways serving as ad hoc toilets. As I turned onto the avenue, I watched a seemingly homeless man, naked from the waist down, stumble toward what looked to be a breakfast cart. Typical stuff, these days. But as I got closer to the subway steps, I saw that he was reaching for a pile of newspapers. He wasn’t intrigued by the cover story. Somewhere in the vicinity was a pile of diarrhea on the ground; the rest of it was packed between the man’s buttocks. The sight sent me into a frantic jog down the subway steps, dry-heaving behind my leather gloves. Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have been ridiculed after it emerged that all of the winners of an initiative designed to foster gender equality in the workplace were men. Certificates and medals were awarded by Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the vice-president of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai, in the categories of “best government entity supporting gender balance”, “best federal authority supporting gender balance” and “best gender balance initiative” at a ceremony on Sunday. The awards went to the finance ministry, the federal competitiveness and statistics authority and ministry of human resources respectively, which were all represented by male awardees. The Islamic Republic of Iran publicly hanged a 31-year-old Iranian man after he was found guilty of charges related to violations of Iran’s anti-gay laws, according to the state-controlled Iranian Students’ News Agency. The unidentified man was hanged on January 10 in the southwestern city of Kazeroon based on criminal violations of “lavat-e be onf” – sexual intercourse between two men, as well as kidnapping charges, according to ISNA. Iran’s radical sharia law system prescribes the death penalty for gay sex. America has its faults. But, it still is the greatest nation on the face of the earth. The Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery was unable to locate any family members to attend services for a Vietnam Air Force veteran named Joseph Walker — so staff members charged with organizing his funeral made a public plea for attendance. “We do not leave veterans behind,” they said. Drunk and on ecstasy. This isn't going to end well. Jackass inspired stunt. Of course it didn't go well. Most of us are perfectly content to share a few drinks with our friends without engaging in any dangerous, potentially lethal behavior. But there are, of course, exceptions to that standard. For instance, this group of young Dutchmen who made it a tradition to end their nights about town by swallowing live fish. The “Jackass”-inspired stunt took a wrong turn when one of the young men accidentally consumed a spiky — and venomous — catfish that then lodged in his trachea. California’s new governor has wasted little time continuing the state’s seemingly limitless expansion of government. Governor Gavin Newsom’s first budget proposal, published last week, suggests instituting a tax on drinking water in the name of cleaning up California’s water systems. The “Environmental Protection” section of the 2019-2020 budget seeks to establish a new special fund, with a dedicated funding source from new water, fertilizer, and dairy fees, to enable the State Water Resources Control Board to assist communities, particularly disadvantaged communities, in paying for the short-term and long-term costs of obtaining access to safe and affordable drinking water. I must study up on this "ableism". Russian-born comedian Konstantin Kisin knows about this oh too well. Russian-born comedian Konstantin Kisin received the agreement from the event’s organizer, university society UNICEF on Campus, along with an invitation to perform at London’s School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS), according to BBC. He tweeted that the contract “nearly” made him “puke.” The “no tolerance policy” listed several topics including “racism, sexism, classism, ageism, ableism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia or anti-religion or anti-atheism. If any such topic was covered, it must be done in a “respectful and non-abusive way.” The outfit makes sense for someone who spends a lot of time tinkering with new inventions in the basement. Ashkin, who's 96 years old, has turned the bottom floor of his house into a kind of laboratory where he's developing a solar-energy-harnessing device. "I'm making cheap electricity," he said. Ashkin's new invention uses geometry to capture and funnel light. Essentially, it relies on reflective concentrator tubes that intensify solar reflections, which could make existing solar panels more efficient or perhaps even replace them altogether with something cheaper and simpler. I know someone who, as Kammie Harris has described, is "drowning in America."
Why? He doesn't want to work. He can work, he just doesn't want to. And does not see the connection between "work" and "money." He wants his job to be "fun," so he chooses not to work and incessently complains about it. So yeah, he's drowning because he won't use a life preserver. It's his own choice, just like so many here. So, I watched "The Music Man" tonight, the musical with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones (and a really young Ron Howard).
It was a long running Broadway show, and when it was going into movie production the lead was offered to Frank Sinatra and Cary Grant. According to an urban legend I can't find, one of them (I think Sinatra) said, "Not only will I not play the lead, I won't even go see the picture unless Robert Preston is the star." Like most musicals, it's pretty slight, but very enjoyable. Lots of good songs and a great screen image. And it depressed the hell out of me. Why? Because this sort of film, in today's climate, would be classed as "rape culture" and banished to the realm of things like Mein Kampf. Because the female lead discovers (spoiler alert) that the male lead is a fraud, but decides to protect him because she's fallen in love with him. You know, I believe that women and men should be treated equally, and rewarded equally for what they do. And modern feminism has destroyed all of that. All of it. They have totally annihilated the idea of "romance." "Romance" used to be big, it was one of the things that I aspired to. And the feminists have made that utterly toxic. So that a movie like "La La Land" HAS to end with the leads going their separate ways. Oh, spoiler alert, except I don't care about that movie. Sorry, everyone, I am back in depression mode. It's what I am. But I apologize anyway. There just isn't a place, is there. And if my Notebook text paste sends me to the barrel, well, there I am. Again, sorry for being a bummer. Regarding the Kamala bullshit. I know there are people who are struggling. However, a lot of the people I know who are drowning in debt are married couples who have moderate incomes, and should be able to support themselves.
Two of these couples are married nephews of mine who think "the rich" should be taxed more heavily to pay for socialism. They take vacations every year. They buy news cars much more often than I do, and I'm much more financially secure than they are. I tend to keep my cars 13 to 15 years. They go to restaurants and movie theaters frequently. They put anything and everything on their credit cards instead of paying cash. We don't need higher taxation of the rich. We need to become more financially responsible. And we need to tell people that if they have one child and need foodstamps to feed it, they have no business having more. If that Kamala dummy becomes president, I am going to be very pissed. Re: "Democracy" There was a big change after World War II, up through the 1920s and 1930s Army training manuals would list Democracy as a decidedly negative thing, defining it as "government by the masses, leads to license, agitation, discontent, anarchy and mobocracy. Attitude towards property is communistic".
After the war, the definition of democracy in the training manuals was completely changed, democracy was suddenly, somehow all sweetness and light and glossed over as simply majority rule. Weird. America's entry into the UN was an engineered product looking back. The whole point of the American experiment was obviously to avoid the excesses that history has shown inevitably occurs, whether it is by King, dictator, or democracy. Democracy inevitably leads to Fascism/Authoritarianism/Totalitarianism near as I can tell. It's just too tempting in the interim. Posted by: Common Tater at January 29, 2019 10:16 PM (WgTfj) 79

As long as a system contains people, it will fail. The Founders tried their damnedest to try to make that work for the system by hamstringing the government and getting people to work against each other so nothing would get done on grand scales. We then set about dismantling most of the protections in the system, then complain about the result.

That NEVER happened when I was a kid. Not for cold. You might get it for snow but it had to be a lot. Now they'll call it because there MIGHT be snow tomorrow. One year in grade school, might've been the very late 1970s or very early 1980s, I lost my hat and gloves and didn't want to get into trouble with the parents for telling them I lost them so I walked to school and back home the entire winter without them. It was probably about a mile there and a mile back, maybe a bit less but I doubt it. On the really cold days my ears would quite burning by lunch. Unfortunately that was a very cold winter. Agreed. Time for me for dust off my evergreen proposal: gross up welfare payments, and then tax them back down to where they are now. Even though they'd be no worse off, the parasites would bleat to high heaven at having that lovely cash in their hands, and then having to give it back to Uncle Sam. Nothing like peeling off a series of $100 bills to focus the mind. Since we are pulling ideas out of the attic.... For at least three months, have every single person who receives any form of money from any government treasury, in any amount, to appear at a local station with the previous month's grocery, utility (includes water, gas, electric, phone, data, cable) bills and whatever proof of identity they had to use to get the assistance in the first place. Story out of Portland:
A Libyan who has been granted asylum, Mohanad Elshieky, is a local standup comic. He had a gig in eastern Washington, took Greyhound back to Portland, and was stopped by the Customs and Border Patrol at the Spokane bus station. (A lot of illegals take Greyhound, so CBP frequently does spot checks at bus stations.) He wasn't carrying his required immigration paperwork, so CBP detained him for about twenty minutes, confirmed that he was here legally, and let him board his bus to Portland. (CBP had the option of arresting him for not having his required documents, but chose not to do so.) Well, of course, he went onto Twitter, denounced "ICE" as "racist trash" (ignoring the fact that it wasn't ICE that stopped him), and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez then announced that this was more proof that ICE needed to be abolished. Now the ACLU, et. al. are piling on, of course. He did a comedy show last night in Portland, and said: "I've been living here in the U.S. for four-and-a-half years now," he said, "and I think I need to speak to the manager. Because the product looks nothing like the image." He's obviously very grateful to the United States for giving him asylum. In other words, he hates Trump, and thinks that everything is racist, just like every other "comedian" in Portland. He may be in trouble, however - his green card application is still outstanding, and he incautiously told the local paper a month ago that he was looking forward to soon getting US citizenship, so he can go back and visit his family in Libya. It turns out that it is a problem - under US law, if an asylee returns to, or intends to return to, the country that he allegedly fled, that invalidates your asylum claim. We'll see if the immigration people read the papers. Posted by: The ARC of History at January 29, 2019 11:10 PM (I2/tG) 267

Recess was a lot of fun in the winter. We played "king of the mountain" on the snowhills, but we called it "devils and angels". The angels pushed the devils out of heaven. One year the head nun had the boys carrying out buckets of water to make an ice rink, so we could ice skate over lunch hour recess.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Florida -- A Florida man is behind bars after stealing what he thought were Hydrocodone pills, but which turned out to actually be over-the-counter laxatives and not powerful prescription opioids, according to a criminal complaint. Cops allege that Peter Hans Emery, 56, took the pills from a "lock box" at the victim's Pinellas Park home Thursday morning. Emery, cops say, was recorded by a video camera "entering the victim's lock box, selecting a pill bottle, pouring pills into his hand, and then leaving." The pill container was labeled "Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen." However, Emery subsequently discovered that he had not swiped painkillers. The pill bottle actually contained dosages of Equate Gentle Laxative, which promises "predictable overnight relief" from constipation. Even nice, liberal rich people are being affected. Passing by a group of delirious homeless on the way to the subway is bad; having a camp of them next door who are breaking and entering and slashing your Range Rover tires once a week is even worse.

About a year ago, the 17yo daughter of an old friend was (at very least) brutally beaten and burned alive by burglars in her home after school.
Heretofore, there has been little progress on this, largely because Park County's last Sheriff was a good for nothing layabout and crook. But, the new Sheriff seems serious about breaking this case. He is offering a $50k reward. Also, he's released sketches of two suspects out of three. One is preliminary, the other final, and he said there'd be more to follow soon. He says they may have moved away since the crime, so I'd ask all of you to keep your eyes peeled for these degenerates, but especially if you're in CO, because they may still be hanging around here: https://tinyurl.com/ybkpvgj7 https://tinyurl.com/yaxzvlgy The SD also launched this website for tips: http://maggielongtaskforce.com I'll probably post this on an ONT and a morning thread from time to time. I'm expecting to pay a bit more (about 10% of taxpayers in Oregon are in that boat). However, there are long-term beneficial effects - the D's in Oregon are going to be proposing a couple of billion in new taxes, and anyone near or at the SALT deduction limit won't get to deduct them. May generate some pushback. Historically, every time there is a proposed tax increase in Oregon, the Left scrambles to assure people that you can deduct the new tax from your Federal return. Historically, every time there is a proposed tax increase in Oregon, the Left scrambles to assure people that you can deduct the new tax from your Federal return.
Not this time. Posted by: The ARC of History at January 30, 2019 12:23 AM (I2/tG) Yeah, the lack of deduction for state taxes is supposed to hurt those of us living in high-tax states, and I suppose it will. Yeah, the lack of deduction for state taxes is supposed to hurt those of us living in high-tax states
I thought that limiting the deductibility of state and local taxes to $10,000 was a work of political genius - most people in Portland will still get to take the full deduction, but a lot of people are close to the limit. Big state and local tax increases will push a lot of people over that limit. Besides, there's this: High-income and high-tax states benefit the most from the deduction. Together, California and New York receive around one-third of the total value of the deduction, the Tax Foundation found. Filers in California, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Texas, and Pennsylvania claim more than half of the value of the deduction. Thorium reactors. Closed-circuit cooling systems. Use "waste heat" for desalinization of ocean water. CA could have more water than it could use, and electricity at a fraction of current cost. Easy.
You could even build gas-fired power/desal plants at today's/near future gas prices and deliver similar results. Fox2!, I think there's a pernicious "market response" to the absurd higher "education" cost situation. Companies are paying off new hires' college debts.
Why "pernicious"? Because it's one more subsidy (albeit not public) of the toxic/insanely greedy academic sector. Which will make its current posture more "sustainable". The waste and injustice and fraud which spectacular prosperity enable is beyond calculation, and generally an unavoidable side effect of human nature. But it's all still a net decrease in general welfare, it all has opportunity costs. Private sector should never have to absorb these debts/subsidize the absurd higher "education" cost structure. T-34 got the job done, but indeed had some funky elements. UToob videos showing internal spaces and operations are interesting.
Socratic knowledge boost of the week for me: at least according to the book I'm reading, Red Army tankers in The Great Patriotic War had casualty rates matching those of German U-boat crews (the highest of any belligerent's individual line of service, excluding of course tokutai or kamikaze types). But I think this is mostly a statistical artifact from 41-43, and the rates changed dramatically in 44-45. Not just because the Big Mo, but Soviet competence and effectiveness had risen from near zero to reasonably good. Through the harshest sort of educational process. Posted by: rhomboid at January 30, 2019 01:55 AM (QDnY+) 537
T-34 is example of superior SMR design. The sloping armor and rounded turret are stronk. The fuel system robust. Can accommodate bunker quality diesel even in cool weather. Is best tank for gopnik supersoldier.
Posted by: *sigh* Palp does this better. at January 30, 2019 01:56 AM (11Uo5) 538
Best T-34 story was the handful of tanks that sortied directly from the factory in Stalingrad (unpainted) to "the front" (close by), manned by factory workers, not regular Red Army crews.

Speaking of trolls.
Several morons know who I am in meat-space. I was very happy to contribute to a commentator in need as well as the ewok once my disability insurance for heart disease was approved. I used to post under the nic whatmeworry?. One day, listening to Steely Dan I took to heart the need for the loser's of the world to embrace the suck. Hence Deacon Bleau, I thought misspelling it was funny, but then I am easily amused, which is the main reason for me hanging out here for years. Bleau it turns out is a French sur-name, reportedly meaning blue water, e.g. Fontainebleau. Why post this? Because there are very good people here who mean well who jumped on a thread where ace slightly misunderstood me in a reply and the hue and cry of Kill the Troll! went up, even after the ewok and I cleared up the situation. It was pretty ugly, and I got angry, which made it worse. My apologies to the horde. So, please be careful of collateral damage, just don't feed them and they go away. Nic updated. I used to think the T-34 was a rather good tank, certainly for 1939-1943. On paper ... but I recently stumbled upon this site, with a different perspective ( and sources): https://preview.tinyurl.com/y7stlpul ( links to operationbarbarossa.net ) "The T-34 is possibly the only weapon system in history to be rated by most commentators as the finest all round weapon in a century of warfare, and yet never consistently achieved anything better than a one to three kill-loss ratio against its enemies." IOW: - Strategically, the T-34 was a winning design. - Tactically, it was poor. The entire article must be read, but it looks like the T-34's extremely poor crew visibility was The Factor Responsible for its poor performance. The crew had unusual difficulty in detecting opposing tanks, anti-tank guns, etc. Posted by: Arbalest at January 30, 2019 02:17 AM (FlRtG) 541

The crew had unusual difficulty in detecting opposing tanks, anti-tank guns, etc. Posted by: Arbalest at January 30, 2019 02:17 AM Poor visibilty, lack of radio and crew training all combined to do that, but it just wasn't that good a tank at the time for what the russians could produce and use and what they needed. Yes, it was an outstanding concept and design, no question. But all those factors mentioned, plus the poor standard of steel and manufacture during the earlier years of 40 to 43-ish rendered it an underaceiver.Yeah it shocked the Germans, but only because they were expecting T-26, T-28 and BT designs. In the final washup, T-34 76's (early war production) were being taken out by Stug-3 B's FFS. They weren't the juggernauts they were made out to be. By the time the T-34 reached it's potential, the Germans had already caught up to a large degree,at least in firepower. As good as the T-34 was as a design, I think the Sherman was a bigger threat, due to crew competence, manufacturing and other factors. As a design? Meh. But it delivered and didn't underacheive. Now, IMHO, a tank that doesn't get the recognition it deserves, and delivered in spades for the russians? The KV-1. It was what the russkies needed more of. Something built like a brick shithouse and hit as hard as the T-34. Manufacturing, crew, radio and steel shortcomings weren't asbig a factor. Yeah it had it's shortcomings too, but up against what the Germans had in 41 to 43, it was the overacheiver. Posted by: otho at January 30, 2019 02:59 AM (LkFnL) 544

" I'm making sure the heater is working before I get 15 miles from home"
These are the mornings where I make sure that the interior fan is set to 'record' till it warms up. No need to keep drawing 16 degree air through the heater core, acting like a small radiator to cool off the engine coolant. Just watch for fogging of the inside of the windows. But usually, the engine will come up to temp before that occurs. "Is that new advice due to environmentalism or is there really something to it?"
Other than a brief pause to allow for oil flow before driving, and waiting for the engine to slow from high idle to normal idle, it's supposedly not necessary to warm beyond that. And there is discussion that the cold interior cylinder walls allow for condensing of fuel, which will dilute the engine oil. I usually wait till the engine slows from fast/high idle, and pause briefly after putting the transmission in Drive. But not much beyond that, unless I need to clean the windows for visibility. A little more info on the vehicles and cold.
Both of our cars are Volvo turbos, with full synthetic engine oil. Volvos being Swedish, they know cold weather operation, and their warm up recommendations are pretty much in line with what I do. Plus, the engines idle with so little fuel requirement that it can take 10 minutes for them to begin to warm up if just parked in neutral. They really don't begin to warm up quickly unless they are being driven. I am so glad I'm already married. The one that really stood out was the guy who liked to wait until he was sure the relationship was going somewhere before having sex. Make sure you have complete control of all video of the incident or that there is none. 3. Make sure there are no few or no hostile witnesses to the smear attack. They also had a picture of her from a decade ago with the article doing her workout routine. Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at January 30, 2019 06:50 AM (JUOKG) 676
The Baltimore prosecutor laughs at the idea of a legislature. Her view is, Who needs that?!

Pretty sunrise this morning here. We got 3" of fluffy snow yesterday that is very beautiful. Now it is frozen rock solid. I hope I don't have to go anywhere today.

Antisocialist, do they have a similar rule about Obama hats or any other political hats? Sounds like they are discriminating to me, unless there is such a rule.

634 I see that civil rights groups are going to sue the State of Texas to try and block them from finding out the citizenship status of the 95,000 questionable voter registrations that the State AG found.
They are claiming that most if not all of those people gained legal status after they obtained their drivers license and are eligible to vote. _____________________ If they really believed that, they wouldn't be objecting to checking their citizenship status. 'Pussy Hats' Every photo out there seems to show the wearers hurling hate and bigotry towards others. They have become symbols of hate and bigotry, and should be banned from public wearing. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at January 30, 2019 06:56 AM (cqNba) 683
Part of the Empire story claims that he got 'hate' mail recently.
So are we to conclude he was somehow stalked? That would be a ludicrous stretch. Or is it more likely that this obscure person is just trying to raise their own profile? Posted by: Mr. Peebles at January 30, 2019 06:56 AM (gsGev) 684

Cruz only beat the fake Mexican by 200,000 votes. Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at January 30, 2019 07:03 AM (JUOKG) 686

bluebell, no, Obama shirts were worn all over the facility.
And it's not an election year, so the Hatch Act stuff doesn't apply. (It's a government facility) Posted by: Antisocialist at January 30, 2019 07:17 AM (fUd3R) Processing 0.1, elapsed 0.1119 seconds. |
