It was a long running Broadway show, and when it was going into movie production the lead was offered to Frank Sinatra and Cary Grant. According to an urban legend I can't find, one of them (I think Sinatra) said, "Not only will I not play the lead, I won't even go see the picture unless Robert Preston is the star."
Like most musicals, it's pretty slight, but very enjoyable. Lots of good songs and a great screen image.
And it depressed the hell out of me. Why? Because this sort of film, in today's climate, would be classed as "rape culture" and banished to the realm of things like Mein Kampf.
Because the female lead discovers (spoiler alert) that the male lead is a fraud, but decides to protect him because she's fallen in love with him.
You know, I believe that women and men should be treated equally, and rewarded equally for what they do.
And modern feminism has destroyed all of that. All of it. They have totally annihilated the idea of "romance."
"Romance" used to be big, it was one of the things that I aspired to. And the feminists have made that utterly toxic. So that a movie like "La La Land" HAS to end with the leads going their separate ways. Oh, spoiler alert, except I don't care about that movie.

She was a manager at a retail store but decided to go it on her own as a graphic designer.. he was an environmental field engineer... wanted to do music.. invested in equipment to start a recording studio in his basement and is too busy to take on all the people that want him to record/mix/master them.
Yes.. they're libs and take advantage of O'Care.. but they are working.. not lazy at all.. and enjoying life working for themselves!

Two of these couples are married nephews of mine who think "the rich" should be taxed more heavily to pay for socialism. They take vacations every year. They buy news cars much more often than I do, and I'm much more financially secure than they are. I tend to keep my cars 13 to 15 years. They go to restaurants and movie theaters frequently. They put anything and everything on their credit cards instead of paying cash.
We don't need higher taxation of the rich. We need to become more financially responsible. And we need to tell people that if they have one child and need foodstamps to feed it, they have no business having more.
If that Kamala dummy becomes president, I am going to be very pissed.

That NEVER happened when I was a kid. Not for cold. You might get it for snow but it had to be a lot. Now they'll call it because there MIGHT be snow tomorrow.
One year in grade school, might've been the very late 1970s or very early 1980s, I lost my hat and gloves and didn't want to get into trouble with the parents for telling them I lost them so I walked to school and back home the entire winter without them. It was probably about a mile there and a mile back, maybe a bit less but I doubt it. On the really cold days my ears would quite burning by lunch. Unfortunately that was a very cold winter.
The only saving grace is that it wasn't the 1950s so it wasn't uphill both ways.

Agreed. Time for me for dust off my evergreen proposal: gross up welfare payments, and then tax them back down to where they are now. Even though they'd be no worse off, the parasites would bleat to high heaven at having that lovely cash in their hands, and then having to give it back to Uncle Sam. Nothing like peeling off a series of $100 bills to focus the mind.
It would have a salutary effect on the next vote to raise taxes.

That ought to cull tens if not hundreds of billions of dollars from the entitlement programs by ferreting out the dead, illegal, fictional and other assorted drifters, scammers and frauds.

The last time a major party Presidential candidate was nominated, and lost, two times in a row, was Adlai Stevenson (1952, 1956 v Ike). Respected, experienced, intellectual, yadayada, versus Smiling Grampaw who Won the War. Heh. No-brainer.
So, history hivemind, was there ever a time when a major party Presidential candidate lost, but came back the next year and won? Especially against an incumbent? Not recently, at least.

However, how can you not double-check anything that could hold money before donating it or throwing it out?
Donating a coat and then finding out someone had hidden money in the lining? Understandable.
Not checking a cup, a glass, pockets, purses, wallets, leafing through the pages of books? Not understandable.

True story here. about 2 years ago, I bought a used mobility scooter from a guy that bought them used at garage/estate sales and refurbed them to sell.
I was bored one day and popped the end caps off of the handlebars on each side. Whoever had owned it had stuck 10 $100 bills on each side in those handlebars.
I called the refurb guy to ask where he bought it, but he only kept records of date and amount of purchase, not where.

Appropos of nothing, I noticed today that a 12 oz can of evaporated milk contained exactly 10 oz in an accurate pyrex measuring cup. How many actually take the time to measure the products they sell for correct weight and such? I just happened to pour it into the pyrex. I bet we're being shortchanged on a lot of things. I've been meaning to buy a scale for a while. SOBs make it impossible to comparison shop. 12 oz "pounds" of coffee.

A Libyan who has been granted asylum, Mohanad Elshieky, is a local standup comic.
He had a gig in eastern Washington, took Greyhound back to Portland, and was stopped by the Customs and Border Patrol at the Spokane bus station. (A lot of illegals take Greyhound, so CBP frequently does spot checks at bus stations.) He wasn't carrying his required immigration paperwork, so CBP detained him for about twenty minutes, confirmed that he was here legally, and let him board his bus to Portland. (CBP had the option of arresting him for not having his required documents, but chose not to do so.)
Well, of course, he went onto Twitter, denounced "ICE" as "racist trash" (ignoring the fact that it wasn't ICE that stopped him), and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez then announced that this was more proof that ICE needed to be abolished. Now the ACLU, et. al. are piling on, of course.
He did a comedy show last night in Portland, and said:
"I've been living here in the U.S. for four-and-a-half years now," he said, "and I think I need to speak to the manager. Because the product looks nothing like the image."
He's obviously very grateful to the United States for giving him asylum.
In other words, he hates Trump, and thinks that everything is racist, just like every other "comedian" in Portland.
He may be in trouble, however - his green card application is still outstanding, and he incautiously told the local paper a month ago that he was looking forward to soon getting US citizenship, so he can go back and visit his family in Libya.
It turns out that it is a problem - under US law, if an asylee returns to, or intends to return to, the country that he allegedly fled, that invalidates your asylum claim.
We'll see if the immigration people read the papers.

Conyers woman was not "cleaning". She was "de-cluttering", probably as a result of reading a fad book by some crazy woman author. Cleaning is getting rid of dirt. PINELLAS COUNTY, Florida -- A Florida man is behind bars after stealing what he thought were Hydrocodone pills, but which turned out to actually be over-the-counter laxatives and not powerful prescription opioids, according to a criminal complaint.
Cops allege that Peter Hans Emery, 56, took the pills from a "lock box" at the victim's Pinellas Park home Thursday morning.
Emery, cops say, was recorded by a video camera "entering the victim's lock box, selecting a pill bottle, pouring pills into his hand, and then leaving." The pill container was labeled "Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen."
However, Emery subsequently discovered that he had not swiped painkillers. The pill bottle actually contained dosages of Equate Gentle Laxative, which promises "predictable overnight relief" from constipation.

Trump's tax cuts will have been fully implemented. As a (one man) business owner, I should be benefitting from the pass-trough deduction. Heretofore, there has been little progress on this, largely because Park County's last Sheriff was a good for nothing layabout and crook.
But, the new Sheriff seems serious about breaking this case. He is offering a $50k reward. Also, he's released sketches of two suspects out of three. One is preliminary, the other final, and he said there'd be more to follow soon.
He says they may have moved away since the crime, so I'd ask all of you to keep your eyes peeled for these degenerates, but especially if you're in CO, because they may still be hanging around here:

However, there are long-term beneficial effects - the D's in Oregon are going to be proposing a couple of billion in new taxes, and anyone near or at the SALT deduction limit won't get to deduct them. May generate some pushback.

Yeah, the lack of deduction for state taxes is supposed to hurt those of us living in high-tax states, and I suppose it will. But according to my calculations from last year, that's offset by the pass-through deduction and the re-jiggered tax brackets, at least for me. I thought that limiting the deductibility of state and local taxes to $10,000 was a work of political genius - most people in Portland will still get to take the full deduction, but a lot of people are close to the limit. Big state and local tax increases will push a lot of people over that limit.
Besides, there's this:
High-income and high-tax states benefit the most from the deduction. Together, California and New York receive around one-third of the total value of the deduction, the Tax Foundation found. Filers in California, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Texas, and Pennsylvania claim more than half of the value of the deduction.

I must admit, being a fisherman (kinda) who loves wild rivers and the fish that inhabit them, I'm not 100% gung-ho for hydro. But I'm willing to admit that CA could use more hydro plants and, perhaps more importantly, more water storage capacity. Plus, tailwater fisheries, properly managed, can be phenomenal. I would prefer, however, to see more nuclear plants rather than more rivers dammed. But that ain't never gonna happen.

Thanks, but I don't always do that. It just helps me to be thankful in small things when things get tough as they are at the moment. You seem to me like a person who cares for others and has a big heart and tries as best they can to cope day by day and care for others, which is the best all of us can do. Socratic knowledge boost of the week for me: at least according to the book I'm reading, Red Army tankers in The Great Patriotic War had casualty rates matching those of German U-boat crews (the highest of any belligerent's individual line of service, excluding of course tokutai or kamikaze types).
But I think this is mostly a statistical artifact from 41-43, and the rates changed dramatically in 44-45. Not just because the Big Mo, but Soviet competence and effectiveness had risen from near zero to reasonably good. Through the harshest sort of educational process.

Poor visibilty, lack of radio and crew training all combined to do that, but it just wasn't that good a tank at the time for what the russians could produce and use and what they needed. Yes, it was an outstanding concept and design, no question.But all those factors mentioned, plus the poor standard of steel and manufacture during the earlier years of 40 to 43-ish rendered it an underaceiver.Yeah it shocked the Germans, but only because they were expecting T-26, T-28 and BT designs. In the final washup, T-34 76's (early war production) were being taken out by Stug-3 B's FFS. They weren't the juggernauts they were made out to be. By the time the T-34 reached it's potential, the Germans had already caught up to a large degree,at least in firepower. As good as the T-34 was as a design, I think the Sherman was a bigger threat, due to crew competence, manufacturing and other factors. As a design? Meh. But it delivered and didn't underacheive.
Now, IMHO, a tank that doesn't get the recognition it deserves, and delivered in spades for the russians? The KV-1. It was what the russkies needed more of. Something built like a brick shithouse and hit as hard as the T-34. Manufacturing, crew, radio and steel shortcomings weren't asbig a factor. Yeah it had it's shortcomings too, but up against what the Germans had in 41 to 43, it was the overacheiver.

It's really not that bad if you have the right clothes/protection. The negative temps become a bit more challenging. But winters here do make me appreciate the other seasons we have. One winter not too long ago, we had about 2 weeks straight of negative temps/high winds. I swore i'd never complain again about the (very few) hot / humid summer days. LOL

The driving would freak me out. I read about icy roads, blizzards. I did once take a ride in a van in weather like that to do a weeklong hike in the Grand Canyon. I'd rather go out in crampons and waterproof gear than get behind a wheel.

These are the mornings where I make sure that the interior fan is set to 'record' till it warms up.
No need to keep drawing 16 degree air through the heater core, acting like a small radiator to cool off the engine coolant.
Just watch for fogging of the inside of the windows. But usually, the engine will come up to temp before that occurs.

Other than a brief pause to allow for oil flow before driving, and waiting for the engine to slow from high idle to normal idle, it's supposedly not necessary to warm beyond that.
And there is discussion that the cold interior cylinder walls allow for condensing of fuel, which will dilute the engine oil.
I usually wait till the engine slows from fast/high idle, and pause briefly after putting the transmission in Drive.
But not much beyond that, unless I need to clean the windows for visibility.

Both of our cars are Volvo turbos, with full synthetic engine oil.
Volvos being Swedish, they know cold weather operation, and their warm up recommendations are pretty much in line with what I do.
Plus, the engines idle with so little fuel requirement that it can take 10 minutes for them to begin to warm up if just parked in neutral.
They really don't begin to warm up quickly unless they are being driven.

1. Don't attack/smear kids. There are these things called parent and they won't back down so easily like employers and associates of the smear target.

Night before last, a guy on night shift went to the tool room wearing one. Tool attendant refused to serve him because the hat "offended " him.
So, employees were told yesterday that they are no longer allowed to wear MAGA hats.
Antisocialist will be purchasing a case of them next payday.

I see the NYT did an article last week claiming that the producers of the rbg movie called her and said she sounded fine and upbeat and will be returning to work soon.
They also had a picture of her from a decade ago with the article doing her workout routine.
