I also want to note that the reason we have so many Catholics on the high court is the schooling itself.
My kids and others who have attended Catholic schools simply are being taught reading and writing and dialectic much, much better than public school children (and Latin!). They also tend to continue thru from grade school to high school to - my daughter is looking only at Catholic colleges now. It's a wonderful "growth medium" for the law, for composition, for lots of things.

That's a key historial detail (not a "detail," actually but an important meta-fact):
The KKK had two separate incarnations. The first incarnation, in the late 1860s, was an attempt to retain the institution of slavery, and to undo the south's defeat in the Civil War. TO that end, they specifically targeted blacks, trying to keep them terrorized and remain as de facto slaves.
That failed, obviously, and the KKK went into a long remission.
But then it was revived in the 1920s, not as an anti-black/pro-slavery organization, but as an anti-Catholic and anti-Jewish terror cell. The targets of its hatred were actually "white" people; while thee was of course the remnant of anti-black sentiment in the KKK, it took a back seat to anti-Catholic zealotry (the primary focus), and to anti-Semitism.
And here's the key: It is this second-wave KKK that most people "remember" -- or at least made a mark on culture: the pointy white hoods, the burning crosses, etc. The first version of the KKK did not of that.
So when people satirical or depict the classic KKK image, they're actually depicting an anti-Cathloic group, without realizing it.
(Finally, there is "third wave" KKK -- modern [starting in the 1960s] trailer-trash losers who revived the iconography of the then-defunct 1920s incarnation, mostly as a self-esteem-boosting tribal identity.)
And yes, all of these versions of the KKK were associated with the Democratic Party.

This has been a puzzler to me a long time now. These were stone age people who had thousands of years to develop more and better technology in one of the best places on earth, but just never did. There were horses in North America long ago, but as near as anyone can figure, they were all eaten. Apparently nobody figured out they could be actually domesticated and ridden until shown by Spaniards.

The author of the piece was a woman, and if I'm not mistaken, the same patient and persistent investigative journalist who also exploded the myth of the McMartin school/Satanic abuse nonsense.
Anyhoo, the article made a rather strong case that Catholic seminaries were being overrun by gays, and seminarians who were vehemently opposed to the gay agenda, were persecuted and harassed, because the hierarchy of the Church KNEW DAMN WELL the gays were all over the place. In leadership positions in the seminaries, in diocese, and presumably, in the College of Cardinals.
This was back in the 90s.

I am providing this factual account of what happened on Friday afternoon at the Lincoln Memorial to correct misinformation and outright lies being spread about my family and me.

am the student in the video who was confronted by the Native American
protestor. I arrived at the Lincoln Memorial at 4:30 p.m. I was told to
be there by 5:30 p.m., when our busses were due to leave Washington for
the trip back to Kentucky. We had been attending the March for Life
rally, and then had split up into small groups to do sightseeing.
When
we arrived, we noticed four African American protestors who were also
on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. I am not sure what they were
protesting, and I did not interact with them. I did hear them direct
derogatory insults at our school group.
The
protestors said hateful things. They called us "racists," "bigots,"
"white crackers," "faggots," and "incest kids." They also taunted an
African American student from my school by telling him that we would
"harvest his organs." I have no idea what that insult means, but it was
startling to hear.

was not intentionally making faces at the protestor. I did smile at one
point because I wanted him to know that I was not going to become angry,
intimidated or be provoked into a larger confrontation. I am a faithful
Christian and practicing Catholic, and I always try to live up to the
ideals my faith teaches me -- to remain respectful of others, and to
take no action that would lead to conflict or violence. I
harbor no ill will for this person. I respect this person's right to
protest and engage in free speech activities, and I support his chanting
on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial any day of the week. I believe he
should re-think his tactics of invading the personal space of others,
but that is his choice to make.
I
am being called every name in the book, including a racist, and I will
not stand for this mob-like character assassination of my family's name.
My parents were not on the trip, and I strive to represent my family in
a respectful way in all public settings.
I
have received physical and death threats via social media, as well as
hateful insults. One person threatened to harm me at school, and one
person claims to live in my neighborhood. My parents are receiving death
and professional threats because of the social media mob that has
formed over this issue.
I love my
school, my teachers and my classmates. I work hard to achieve good
grades and to participate in several extracurricular activities. I am
mortified that so many people have come to believe something that did
not happen -- that students from my school were chanting or acting in a
racist fashion toward African Americans or Native Americans. I did not
do that, do not have hateful feelings in my heart, and did not witness
any of my classmates doing that.
I
cannot speak for everyone, only for myself. But I can tell you my
experience with Covington Catholic is that students are respectful of
all races and cultures. We also support everyone's right to free speech.
I am not going to comment on the
words or account of Mr. Phillips, as I don't know him and would not
presume to know what is in his heart or mind. Nor am I going to comment
further on the other protestors, as I don't know their hearts or minds,
either.
I have read that Mr.
Phillips is a veteran of the United States Marines. I thank him for his
service and am grateful to anyone who puts on the uniform to defend our
nation. If anyone has earned the right to speak freely, it is a U.S.
Marine veteran.
I can only speak for myself and what I observed and felt at the time. But
I would caution everyone passing judgement based on a few seconds of
video to watch the longer video clips that are on the internet, as they
show a much different story than is being portrayed by people with
agendas.
I provided this account
of events to the Diocese of Covington so they may know exactly what
happened, and I stand ready and willing to cooperate with any
investigation they are conducting.

Because
we were being loudly attacked and taunted in public, a student in our
group asked one of our teacher chaperones for permission to begin our
school spirit chants to counter the hateful things that were being
shouted at our group. The chants are commonly used at sporting events.
They are all positive in nature and sound like what you would hear at
any high school. Our chaperone gave us permission to use our school
chants. We would not have done that without obtaining permission from
the adults in charge of our group.
At
no time did I hear any student chant anything other than the school
spirit chants. I did not witness or hear any students chant "build that
wall" or anything hateful or racist at any time. Assertions to the
contrary are simply false. Our chants were loud because we wanted to
drown out the hateful comments that were being shouted at us by the
protestors. After a few minutes of
chanting, the Native American protestors, who I hadn't previously
noticed, approached our group. The Native American protestors had drums
and were accompanied by at least one person with a camera. The
protestor everyone has seen in the video began playing his drum as he
waded into the crowd, which parted for him. I did not see anyone try to
block his path. He locked eyes with me and approached me, coming within
inches of my face. He played his drum the entire time he was in my face.
I never interacted with this
protestor. I did not speak to him. I did not make any hand gestures or
other aggressive moves. To be honest, I was startled and confused as to
why he had approached me. We had already been yelled at by another group
of protestors, and when the second group approached I was worried that a
situation was getting out of control where adults were attempting to
provoke teenagers.
I believed that
by remaining motionless and calm, I was helping to diffuse the
situation. I realized everyone had cameras and that perhaps a group of
adults was trying to provoke a group of teenagers into a larger
conflict. I said a silent prayer that the situation would not get out of
hand. During the period of the
drumming, a member of the protestor's entourage began yelling at a
fellow student that we "stole our land" and that we should "go back to
Europe." I heard one of my fellow students begin to respond. I motioned
to my classmate and tried to get him to stop engaging with the
protestor, as I was still in the mindset that we needed to calm down
tensions. I never felt like I was
blocking the Native American protestor. He did not make any attempt to
go around me. It was clear to me that he had singled me out for a
confrontation, although I am not sure why.
The
engagement ended when one of our teachers told me the busses had
arrived and it was time to go. I obeyed my teacher and simply walked to
the busses. At that moment, I thought I had diffused the situation by
remaining calm, and I was thankful nothing physical had occurred.
I
never understood why either of the two groups of protestors were
engaging with us, or exactly what they were protesting at the Lincoln
Memorial. We were simply there to meet a bus, not become central players
in a media spectacle. This is the first time in my life I've ever
encountered any sort of public protest, let alone this kind of
confrontation or demonstration.

This has been a puzzler to me a long time now. These were stone age people who had thousands of years to develop more and better technology in one of the best places on earth, but just never did. There were horses in North America long ago, but as near as anyone can figure, they were all eaten. Apparently nobody figured out they could be actually domesticated and ridden until shown by Spaniards.

One caveat there. During the Vietnam War, the Ranger Battalions were often broken up and used as Divisional Reconnaissance. One of my 1SGs served with them during that time (his Silver Star citation was fairly harrowing, they had to break up a couple of their claymores and burn the C4 to properly mark the night LZ so they could be picked up before being slaughtered).
Having said that, I absolutely believe that Chief Woke Running Dog is full of shit, and pulled "recon ranger" out of his unwiped ass.

I think that it was probably isolation from Asia that did the most damage. Exchanging new ideas doesn't have to be big things, maybe even just seeing something different and knowing that it can exist is probably enough to spark further development. I served in the Marines from 1976 to 1980. There was a song we used to sing while running that had the lyrics, "I want to be a Recon Ranger, I want to live a life of danger." This was common in boot camp and in the fleet. I served in the 2nd and 3rd Recon Battalions and never heard anyone refer to themselves as a Recon Ranger. Even the recon Marines that had graduated Army Ranger school.

Here's the 'tell' for me.
When you ask people in the service what they do, they're very specific and brief, *especially* if they are non-combat arms.
Ask a tanker pilot what they did in Iraq and they'll tell you they 'passed gas.'
Mechanics are wrench-turners and so forth.
If they were in combat, they'll tell you. I had two uncles in Vietnam (in the country, this is). One was a mechanic shot by trigger happy sentry as he approached the perimeter. The other was in the 101st, LZ Sally.
Both are terse and informative.
When people get really vague like that, you know they're bs-ing.

An excellent question. My answer is, in the legal sphere Catholics are influential. Some, like Scalia and Alito, judge by the Constitution. Others, like Roberts and Sotomayor, manifestly do not. But that does not translate into influence over Evangelical doctrine. Nor should it.
It actually answers the idea that they are being entrusted with the Constitution, not the Bible. Are Protestants that -bad- at interpreting their heritage? No, not a chance. Are Catholics particularly amazing at it? From my own experience, results may vary. It's no grudge against Catholicism: another Scalia would be quite welcome, and I don't need validation of my grudges against my religious leadership. But Barrett is not Scalia, and so it's reaasonable to ask if a non-Ivy Protestant should be considered for the Court. If not, why not?

Depends what me meant. I knew 2 different NCOs that graduated the Special Forces Qualification course and were awarded Green Berets. At one time this was a reenlistment incentive. Our Intel NCO at 3rd Recon Bn was a Gunnery Sergeant. During Vietnam he was an Army Major with Special Forces. He was RIFd was came into the Marines.

Aren't "recon" and "Ranger" sort of diametrically opposed concepts? "Recon" is for intel gathering, observation, force-at-a-distance if possible... "Ranger" is for shock-troop, quick insertion, in-and-out, smash-and-grab sort of operations....
The two concepts just clash in my mind. Bear in mind I'm a straight up civvy with no knowledge other than what military friends have imparted to me... so... yeah.

That's what happened to a lot of the natives. They assimilated and took on English names. I've heard it said that if you've got 3 generations of ancestry in the US, you're almost certain to be part-native.
There probably was a bit of cultural crossover, too. Think of how hunting is a common folk's thing here, but an upper crust pastime in Europe. Or how we respect and support our military, while Europe views theirs barely above criminals. Or how camping is such a big thing here.

And "Vietnam Era Veteran" is a thing. I the federal government does not distinguish whether you were in country or not. I believe if you served up to some point in 1975 you are considered a Vietnam Era Veteran. Lot's of info on the net, I can't unpack this and hope to get it right.
If he did serve and did not make false claims about his service, I thank him for his service. Not sure how this affects what happened the other day since no one involved knew the man's military history at it wasn't the issue.

When you ask people in the service what they do, they're very specific and brief, *especially* if they are non-combat arms.
That has been my experience in life as well. They don't say "I was a marine in Vietnam" they are specific about their exact position and location, and rank. They're rightly proud about their service and the people they served with, usually.

I think you are right about that. I don't know how much of that went on back in the day since inner service rivalry was MUCH more intense. I know Army guys go to Marine Sniper school and Marines have often gone to Army jump school.

Sure it's a thing. No one has a problem with that. My dad's a "Vietnam Era Veteran," and spent those years stocking supply rooms and doing KP duty one weekend each month.
And if you ask him, he'll tell you exactly that. He'll also tell you which Troop Command he was with and that he was in the 70th Infantry Division.
Every actual vet I've run into (and I run into A LOT of them) will immediately say what they did and who they were with.
But when they get all "yeah, I was in the combat naval infantry fusiliers," I start to wonder.
It's a simple, non-threatening question. "What unit were you in?"

Okay, here's why I'm bringing up the unit thing.
The military is very big on it. Very. I can still tell you 19 years later what platoon I was in during basic training (WOLFPACK!).
It is part of what you do. So whether you were in a squadron, a battalion or on a ship, you happily tell people when they ask because hey - maybe you were on the same boat/same unit!
Real vets rattle that stuff off like nothing. It's the guys who tell you career field titles or try to tell you where they were rather than just say: Yeah, I was in first of the ninth, air cavalry in '66 or something like that.
Of course, giving a unit makes it a lot easier to check, which is why they get evasive.

I think the Left has plans for Islam, I'm just not sure what. 3 scenarios:
1. Install their people as Caliph and Sultans. Co-opt it and get the drooling masses at their beck and call.
2. Raise Iran's credibility to make Shia the dominant sect, then produce a 12th Mahdi of their own creation, to pass down a new revelation that codifies Leftist ideology.
3. Discredit it by invalidating Islamic prophecy in some spectacular fashion, and offer their almighty state as a new receptacle for their faith and devotion.

There are massive cleanup operations underway. Every parish in Michigan is having its records reviewed to identify any wrongdoing.
Francis wants to stand in the path of that and it won't go well for him.
This history of the Church is one of decline and renewal. This is no different.

It is part of what you do. So whether you were in a squadron, a battalion or on a ship, you happily tell people when they ask because hey - maybe you were on the same boat/same unit!
Real vets rattle that stuff off like nothing. It's the guys who tell you career field titles or try to tell you where they were rather than just say: Yeah, I was in first of the ninth, air cavalry in '66 or something like that.
Of course, giving a unit makes it a lot easier to check, which is why they get evasive.

26+ years later some of the stuff I really can't tell you, some stuff and weird details, I can. Basic? Not a clue. Half the time I didn't know if it was Lunch or Dinner that we were lined up for (if it was dark, it was Breakfast). Some stuff, I can rattle off, like the number of my "job"... which I have just spaced what we called that (though Army uses MOS.) If I tried for my unit, I might accidentally tell you my husband's.
Memory is reinforced by having conversations... hey, you remember at this place, that guy, and then... oh, yeah, we did this stuff with that guy and now he's...
I can remember about four people from high school, too. Total.

I mean I used to have my locker combo memorized from junior high but these days I'm lucky I remember my phone number.
