Jonah Goldberg Plagiarizes My Political MacGuffin Insight Without Attribution

Here's Jonah Goldberg, plagiarizing me, stating that The Wall has become the MacGuffin of Trump's life-movie:

The border wall is now a MacGuffin, and that’s the problem.

A MacGuffin is a term of art in screenwriting. It's the thing the hero wants but the bad guys are trying to get, and therefore it drives the action of the story. In John Huston's The Maltese Falcon, the Maltese Falcon is the MacGuffin. In Raiders of the Lost Ark it's the Ark. In Dude, Where’s My Car? it's the car.

The term -- though not the idea -- was reportedly coined by Angus McPhail, a screenwriter who worked with Alfred Hitchcock. But it was Hitchcock who popularized the term more than anyone else, even though his definition differed slightly from the conventional one.

"The main thing I’ve learned over the years is that the MacGuffin is nothing," Hitchcock explained in a 1962 interview with French director Francois Truffault. "I'm convinced of this, but I find it very difficult to prove it to others."

What Hitchcock meant is that the audience doesn’t need to care about the MacGuffin. All the MacGuffin needs to do is justify the effort of the hero, and all the audience needs to do is care about the hero.

The border wall isn’t nothing, but in the context of the partisan fight over the shutdown, it might as well be. For those who see Donald Trump as the hero of the story, what really matters is that he triumphs. For those who see him as the villain, what really matters is that he be defeated.

This is what I wrote in 2013, in a piece which has been referenced many times in conservative media, including, I'm pretty sure, by people at NRO, making the case that the media only cared about Obamacare as the McGuffin of Obama's movie:

In a movie or book, "The MacGuffin" is the thing the hero wants.

Usually the villain wants it too, and their conflict over who will end up with The MacGuffin forms the basic spine of the story.

In Raiders of the Lost Ark, the MacGuffin is, of course, the Lost Ark. Indy wants it; the Nazis have it. This basic conflict over simple possession animates a two hour long movie.

Alfred Hitchcock noted -- counterintuitively, when you first hear this -- that the specifics of the MacGuffin don't really matter at all to a movie. He pointed out that the audience doesn't care at all about the MacGuffin. The hero in the movie itself cares, but the audience doesn't.

In one Hitchcock film, the MacGuffin was some smuggled uranium hidden in vintage wine bottles. But Hitchcock noted it didn't matter if it was uranium in wine bottles, or a fragment of a diplomatic dispatch from the Nazi high command, or a hidden murder weapon, or photographs proving a Senator's affair.

The Lost Ark in Raiders of the Lost Ark could have easily been replaced with some missing Shankara Stones from a Thuggee temple, or the Holy Grail. In fact, that's exactly what they changed the MacGuffin to in the sequels.

No audience member really cared if the Nazis wound up with the Ark of the Covenant....

But an important sounding MacGuffin is just another way to increase the audience's emotional attachment to the Hero, not to the idea of possessing the MacGuffin.

And that, of course, explains all you need to know about the abnormal political situation we find ourselves in, and the Cult of Barack Obama.

For Obama's fanbois, this is not politics. This isn't even America, not really, not anymore.

This is a movie. And Barack Obama is the Hero. And the Republicans are the Villains. And policy questions -- and Obama's myriad failures as an executive -- are simply incidental. They are MacGuffins only, of no importance whatsoever, except to the extent they provide opportunities for Drama as the Hero fights in favor of them.

Does "Jonah's" article seem to be making the same point I did, which, by the way, was original when I made it? (But not when he made it.)

Does he seem to be using the same language?

Even the same examples?

Yeah, because he didn't write this piece. He merely remembered it.

This is plagiarism, and yeah, Jonah Goldberg read my article. Do I have to do a twitter search to find him referencing it?

I'd like an acknowledgement from NRO.

Update: Looks like someone at NRO is willing to link the article Jonah stole from the "show notes" from his podcast, but Goldberg himself refuses to link it the article he writes.

Is he going to claim it's only partial plagiarism because sources were acknowledged elsewhere?

Pro-Tip, Jonah: "But I don't like him anymore" is not, in fact, a license to plagiarize people. "I don' wanna acknowledge him, he criticizes me!" is not a free pass to steal ideas and wording from someone and deny the most basic attribution.

But tell me about #MuhPrinciples, Jonah.

Given that I'm the real author of this NRO piece, I think I'm going to have to demand the standard NR freelance article rate as payment, as well as a prominent "Adapted from an original piece by Ace of Spades" credit.

And I'm not kidding. This is plagiarism, straight-up. Pay me.

I'm not serving as an unacknowledged, uncompensated ghostwriter for cucks.

Someone Ran That Search... and found this:

QUOTE:
About three years ago, the eponymous "Ace" from the legendary Ace of Spades HQ blog wrote a brilliant little essay on "The MacGuffinization of American politics."

Jonah Goldberg on NRO, May 6, 2016

A three-year old acknowledgement doesn't count as far as acknowledging the new borrowing of the idea, Jonah. It's not a perpetual license.

I'm pretty sure NR's legal department can verify this. I'm sure your syndicator, the Tribune Group, has a legal department that can verify this as well.

By the Way: Jonah stole the MacGuffin idea on Special Report this week, too. Was it yesterday? The day before?

So he cribbed it on FoxNews, too.

I didn't say anything about it publicly because I granted him the Extemporaneous Speech latitude. You can't cite every source in extemporaneous speech. (Actually, I try to, and I even cite sources when chatting with friends, not wanting to take a lick of credit that isn't my original insight, but I'll grant that not everyone is as much of a stickler about it as I am.)

But this is written. This is an article he's apparently selling/syndicating through the Tribune group. He had time to edit this, reflect on this. Think about whether he'd properly sourced all ideas or quotes he'd... borrowed from others.

And he decided to not even note the idea that the central idea of his whole article -- which he's getting paid for a lot more than I got paid for my original post -- came from someone else.

Extemporaneous speech, I give you a pass.

A written article that you edited and then went through over another editor's desk?

No. There is no free pass for deliberate, well-reflected plagiarism.

Gillette Is Not Wrong

Is the new Gillette razor ad a radical feminist attack on
masculinity - the commercial embodiment of a woke sensibility? I was
prepared to think so. But having watched it twice, I find a lot to like.

Especially all the black guys protecting white women from angry white men.

110 Explain to me how a fucking wall is nothing?

Conservatives are emotional about the issue because we have been calling for it for over 20 years.

I remember reading in the 90s how people were spending $20 in postage to send bricks to congress for a WALL

Many conservatives did not really like DJT, but voted for him out of desperation. We have been pleasantly surprised.

You idiots (and goldberg voted for barry, i am sure) voted for that know-nothing in spite of what he was campaigning on saying the would not be as bad as what he claimed. He would not make deals with Iran (like he said he would in the campaign) or try to "transform" america.

YOU thought tfg was a hero.

WE thought DJT was,... well, our only option but maybe he would do what he said he would do.

We voted for DJT because of what he said he would do (close the border) and not because we loved his pants crease or eloquence or (God help us) hair.

Ace didn't invent the Macguffin, but maybe his explanation was so adroit that it's what was in Jonah's lizard brain when he came to write the column.

Try 40 years not 20. It's only been talked about because people were getting so pissed about it they had to talk about it just so they could claim they covered the story.

This has been going on since the '70's.

And every damn time the Democrats would say "do this thing for us and THEN we'll fix immigration".

Naturally they didn't. The most infamous one is where they ratfucked Reagan and then laughed about it public.

We've been waiting. The frustration level is at max. They have one move to make. Allow the wall to be built or the next election we'll elect someone worse than Trump or start a war. Cold or hot I'm not sure. Depends on how smarmy the Dems get. If they rub it in our faces it'll go hot pretty fast.

1. FBI says they couldn't have used the dossier to get a FISA warrant because they didn't know about it.

2. Ohr says they did know about it.

3. Posters say McCabe testified that the dossier was used to get the FISA warrant.

What is not clarified is what warrant are we talking about . The original warrant or the resubmitted requests?

Again this can all be learned from testimony from the FISA judge.

190 I can overlook accidentally remembering an Ace column from 5 years ago, and not realizing it is not an orginal thought.

Ace posts can be very deep and insightful, and they can get into your way of thinking about things so I can see someone forgetting where it originated after 5 years.

I can not overlook his comparison. TFG was a POS and his support was the far far left, and the seat sniffers like goldberg.

90% of tfg's support was about what people *hoped* he would do, and not what he did, or what he said, or what he stood for. That is hero worship.

DJT. A hero? Only based on his results, and they are luxurious.

Quite a few years ago, the tables were turned on Jonah. A student from Phillips Academy plagiarized him by copying two GFiles for the school paper.

Was brought to Jonah's attention, Jonah mentioned it at The Corner, and said student was kicked out of Phillips for an honor code violation.

I was tangentially involved and have personal knowledge that this happened. No, I wasn't the student.

So. There's that.

So, I don't think you can say he is actively trying to hide the attribution or steal anything here. He has attributed the idea several times.

It may be fair to say he should have provided attribution in his published column, although I suppose part of that is space considerations. But it is not fair to say he is trying to steal the idea and hide it from everybody where it came from originally. Not when publicly announced he originally got it from Ace like last week.

460 "A pie is a baked dish which is usually made of a pastry dough casing that covers or completely contains a filling of various sweet or savoury ingredients. Pies are defined by their crusts. A filled pie, has pastry lining the baking dish, and the filling is placed on top of the pastry but left open. A top-crust pie has the filling in the bottom of the dish and is covered with a pastry or other covering before baking. A two-crust pie has the filling completely enclosed in the pastry shell."

The ancient Romans did not have cheesecake in the modern sense, although Philadelphia was known.

551 Jonah Goldberg had a woman fired 15 years ago for plagiarizing four sentences in an essay she published. Elizabeth Nickson wrote a column for Canada's National Post in those days, right up until she included his work without attribution.
Her plagiarism was incidental, in that it wasn't the whole backbone concept of her essay, while his was major. Jonah stole the idea, rewrote it a bit, and published it as his own insight. Nickson was fired and the National Post published a major correction acknowledging Goldberg's work. Everything she wrote previous to her plagiarism was scoured for other issues. None were found.

What will the Los Angeles Times do? The National Review? His book publisher? FNC?

Everyone who has published work ostensibly from Goldberg's pen will now need to determine if it is his original work. Are there other accusations? Those will nned to be reviewed with more seriousness and thoroughness.

554 I've seen other definitions of MacGuffin where the MacGuffin is some insignificant object that keeps the plot in motion without itself being important. So in Dial M for Murder the key that is used to get into the apartment is the MacGuffin because it serves as both alibi and incriminating evidence without itself being what the protagonist wants.

Posted by: f wiener at January 19, 2019 12:31 AM (8xtON)

557 The way Goldberg cites his examples does reflect what Ace wrote years back. How unique these examples, as applied to politics, are would be difficult to litigate.
Goldberg, in all likelihood, is less inclined to cite blog writers who do not use their real names. You aren't going to see NYT or WaPo or other major media going out of their way to cite someone whose identity is unknown to the public. IOW, if you want credits, you'd have a lot better chance to get cited if you published under your own name.

Goldberg also is borrowing Ace's work this way because he has good cause to believe his lawyer and NRO's legal team are adequate to resist any claim Ace might present to a court. Or that legal fees would cost Ace far more than he could ever hope to win in court.
Also, Goldberg and his counsel have to have a certain amount of confidence that someone who doesn't write under their own name will not disclose their personal info by filing a lawsuit, especially against people with long publishing experience and in-house legal staff and lawyers who write for the magazine like NRO does.
Perhaps getting credits from Goldberg has become your MacGuffin.

558 The folks defending Jonah on his Twitter feed are being dishonest

1) Ace is not claiming he created the term McGuffin. Jonah has lifted entire sentences from Ace's work, almost word for word

2) its irrelevant if you credited him in a podcast, you still have to credit him in the article you later wrote. Just because I properly attribed Shakespeare yesterday doesn't mean its okay to pass his work off as my own tomorrow.

Have to say Im really shocked NRO would not only so shamelessly plagiarize another's work, but also be so brazen and low class about it.

I can't imagine a more effective way to discredit NRO. True colors indeed.

559 I don't know if anyone else mentioned it in the thread as I've only read the piece, and not the the comments, but the Macguffin in Dude, Where's My Car is NOT the car.

It's the "continuum transfunctioner".

So Jonah is wrong again.

Posted by: Evan3457 at January 19, 2019 01:23 AM (8X8pP)

560 To amplify...
Yes, Jesse and Chester are looking for the car, and that's what leads them "down the rabbit hole", but:

The Alien Nordic Dudes are the keepers of the transfunctioner and they want it back to keep the universe safe.

The Hot Space Sluts want the transfunctioner and offer sex to Jesse and Chester to get it so they can destroy (or rule) the universe.

The Zoltanists kidnap Wanda and Wilma (Jesse and Chester's girlfriends) in order to get the transfunctiner so they can give it to the Alien Nordic Dudes so the Dudes will taken the Zoltanists with them when the leave Earth.

The Jock Bullyboys led by Tommy have kidnapped Jesse and Chester's friend, Nelson, to force Jesse and Chester to give them the Transfunctioner so they can give it to the Hot Space Sluts, so the bullyboys can get the sexual favors.

In sum, only Jesse and Chester care where their car is, but the search for the car is what leads them back into contact with all the people who are chasing the Transfunctioner.

Once it is found, returned to the rightful owner, deactivated, and then used to save the day, the plot, such as it is, is over. Jesse and Chester find the car the next day, but nothing much comes of that.

The Transfunctioner is the Macguffin.

If anyone cares.

561 Goldberg has pulled this shit before. Remember "The Tyranny of Cliches"? Martin Amis published a book ten years earlier, "The War Against Cliche". Like this instance, Goldberg stole a good idea, used it, and perhaps most pathetically, screwed it up. Ace is in good company.

563 He will ignore you until you get lawyers involved.

Are you going to get lawyers involved?

Because if not, you just wasted your time and would have done just as well to shut up.

You should get lawyers involved. You should have gotten lawyers involved FIRST and posted this concurrent with the announcement that lawyers were already involved. This is why the left doesn't fear the right: because while the right was led by NeverTrump types, it was all sound and no fury, never any real action. Never anything serious. Never any genuine consequences. All theater.

Do not make threats. Making a threat means you're not serious. Having a track record of announcing consequences FIRST is what earns you the ability to start making threats.

565 Goldberg's position really does seem extraordinary. "I acknowledged your work in the past, and I mentioned it on a podcast this week, so I don't have to source your work in my nationally syndicated column."

Is that really the legal or ethical standard for attribution?

Posted by: Kensington at January 19, 2019 02:25 PM (oNjmf)

566 Ace you're hurting my fweelings with all this troothiness. I feel just so so, um violated and triggered that you caught me red handed with my hand in the "cookie jar." As Bogie said in The M.F. 567 In my profession, plagiarizing students automatically earn a failing grade if they plagiarize in a written assignment. Such an outcome costs them thousands of dollars. Sadly, I have had to confront it to precisely that end. Likewise, if a professor plagiarizes it is not only grounds for termination, but may well end their career in that profession.
The application of the MacGuffin insight to American political life is not common cultural knowledge. Goldberg's lack of attribution is not only intellectual theft, but also someone owes Ace measurable amount of compensation. His actions also must be made public precisely to the degree that he has benefited in public reputation.
In other words, this is a very serious offense.

If you can afford H&B, then you can afford to feed th hookers.
Take a full length mirror off the wall (you are in a hotel room
aren't you?), lay a rail the length of it, give each of two
hookers a straw (illegal in California) put one at each end and
yell, "Go!"

At least that's what I've heard.

And that would require "Ace" to disclose its identity publicly. Something that "Ace" has resisted doing for some years. Its identity is not entirely unknown, given the association that "Ace" has/had with Andrew Breitbart, Michelle Malkin, and Patterico.
Which is why Goldberg will brazen this out and get away with it.There is no person named "Ace of Spades" that would be recognized by a court of law. And Goldberg/NRO knows it far better than most commenting on this thread.

573 Yes, he should give you credit in writing and amend this piece.

But on his recent podcast with JV Last, he did acknowledge you for this point. And, Goldberg tends to repeat himself (as do all pundits, if you listen to or read them enough), and he's given you credit for this idea on multiple other occasions. And, he usually says that you, Ace, do not like him any longer. Not the other way around.

Still, I can understand why you're annoyed, and I hope NRO puts a note on the piece.
