Just got back from Walmart.
Where, lo and behold, I ran into a P and G Rep who was sorting through the Gillette display to make sure it was set up correctly.
I walked away with a suggestion from the Rep to consider looking at the Dollar Shave Products.
The Rep walked away with a better understanding of just how offensive the Gillette ad was to most males.
As well as a better understanding of just how far this topic has risen on the internet.
It was a good and frank 20 minute conversation.

That's an interesting point.
I think there is a direct correlation between emotional control and discipline. Keeping it together, especially in the heat of battle, is learned ability.
The Song of Roland was probably not written by someone who was at those battles. Bards rarely enjoy the sight of blood. I suspect, and this is just cynical me, that the swooning was some fairy tale invention.

You'll notice women are the ones trying to tear it down. The system that supports civilization is based on distributing women to men who do pro societal things. Namely working and not pillaging. Women tend to favor pillagers naturally though. I doubt a woman came up with that, or was in any sort of position to implement anything. Consider the dominant marital structure of the ancient world, where marriage is a negotiation between families, usually led by the heads of households who were male.

The campaign tells the story, but this is my situation:
I am partially handicapped, with limited mobility and only 25% use of my strong right arm. Up until June, I was still able to drive for Uber, and did so for over a year. I was deactivated as a driver at that time.
My only family is a brother who I was helping financially while working. My "friends", I found, consisted of those from a marriage of 17 years which ended three years ago. I have been turned down for welfare benefits because, as reported, I made too much money this last year to qualify. I applied for SSDI, and am awaiting their first denial, as I'm told this is their standard practice.
While working, I had built up a small reserve of money, one that was used up recently to pay an oral surgeon to treat a badly abscessed tooth.
I have been everywhere in applying for jobs, and in the past 6 months have only gotten 3 days of good freelance work, and 5 days of temp work. I will find something, as failure is not an option. In the meantime, I am looking at homelessness very soon. This is the reason for my request. Anything you could do would be greatly appreciated.

I think there is a direct correlation between emotional control and discipline. Keeping it together, especially in the heat of battle, is learned ability.
The Song of Roland was probably not written by someone who was at those battles. Bards rarely enjoy the sight of blood. I suspect, and this is just cynical me, that the swooning was some fairy tale invention.
But interesting food for thought anyway.
The whole story was an invention. The fact that the bard expected his audience, composed of elite warrior-class men and women, to be ok with the idea of Charlemagne and his entire court swooning when they find out that Roland and his men were slain by treachery, is indicative of cultural ideas about emotion and manly behavior, though.
Incidentally, the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons were the ones that equated stoicism with manliness, and they weren't exactly peaceful either.
I do think that there is a link between discouraging boys from crying and discouraging them from losing their temper, though, and encouraging men to be restrained in showing anger is a pretty important cultural priority, if that culture wants to continue functioning.

This morning I heard about Buzzfeed claiming Mike Cohen said Trump told him to lie about his Russian business interests.
Did the horde discuss this? It seems to be a questionable claim.
I consider anything that comes from Buzzfeed to be a lie. The same goes for CNN, MSNPC, NYT, Vox, Headline News, NBC, CBS, ABC and (most of the time), FNC. In fact, just about any MFM outlet.
Saves me a lot of time. I still haven't found the pony that's supposed to be at the bottom of that giant pile of horseshit...

Oh, lord, I have that, too. My dad died in June 2016. He wanted to stay in La Jolla, so was in a board and care home. It had gone on for such a very long time that I was caught flat-footed when it came. One of the great strengths of America is that the military is not set apart from the bulk of the citizenry - we have no real military caste or sub-group, and the military by and large have not considered themselves separate (and superior) as people.
That is beginning to change, I think. Some folks in the military are pushing back, I'm happy to say, but I'm still concerned. I keep thinking of Marius' change to the Legions of the late Roman republic and how that hastened the collapse.

Marius broadened the recruitment base. I agree with the sentiment regarding a warrior nobility but I don't see the analogy. I perceive it as more of a reaction to changing circumstances and not a cause.

If you have any real knowledge about Sparta and what the Spartans were like, you might admire their martial prowess and courage, but I would not want to emulate their society. It was based on slavery, and the Spartans did a lot of weird things in the upbringing of young men to make them the brutal and effective hoplites that they were.

It tells the people with guns that they are separate from and, by extension, morally superior to the rest of the country. That isn't a healthy thing for a country that wants to remain free.
The U.S. Army, was very, very controversial when it was first established, because it could be used as a tool of oppression. That it has not been turned against the citizenry, or taken over the government, is actually a quite remarkable thing in light of the normal course of human history.
That can change, of course. Have a look at the Marian military reforms and the subsequent effect on Roman politics at the end of the Republic to see how changing the basis of the military (and how it views itself) can have consequences for the society which it is supposed to serve.
