The Rise of American Fascism, Part IV: Making Democrats Take Uber

You know who else made people take Uber?

That's right: Frank Stallone.

New thread, with some video and updates.

Update: from Lady in Black --

196 Reporters gathered outside @PressSec's office just asked why Trump sent the letter: "We want to keep her in Washington. If she leaves she guarantees that the second round of paychecks to workers won't go out."

27 Why do important congressmen think they should be going on an overseas trip right now anyway? What could they possibly be doing now that is more important than getting the government back up and running. I have been told by Smart People that getting the government back up is the most important thing to everyone in the country. Shouldn't Democrats be doing everything they can to make that happen? You can't be working on a budget if you're flying around the world.

Sorry guys, but this is NOT bigger than PATCO.

Patco was a big deal. It paralyzed air traffic and ran the risk that any accident (with fatalities) would be blamed on RR.

Patco was firing people during a time when this just was not done. People expected to retire from jobs, not switch every 5 years, and it was as if he destroyed these families for ever.

RR did not have twitter. He had 3 networks showing worried toddlers and patco workers sitting around kitchen tables trying to scrap together to pay the bills.

I am sorry, but This is not Patco. RR had ball the size of Rushmore to fire them.

You know that has nothing to do with execution of funds right? Executive branch executes the funds. Maybe a problem in Fiscal year 2020. Only a small portion of the government is unfunded at the moment, and DoD is funded for a while yet.

Power of the purse merely means that funding bills originate in HoR. If he wanted to go full Obama he'd move funds around as he pleased and use the DoJ slush fund.

When Reagan fired PATCO, all the other unions saw how popular that made Reagan, and pulled in their horns. No point is giving some other politician such an easy way to gain popularity.

289 If the GOP had any balls, it'd be putting up legislation to alter the 22nd Amendment to add another term to allow the rightfully elected president to fulfill the voters' mandate since the Democrat Party has so egregiously and illegally stymied Trump's first term.

And Go Trump! You are still doing yeoman's work against a historically swampy nest of vipers and ne'er-do-wells.

331 I went back to the source

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management develops policy and provides guidance to Federal agencies regarding Reduction in Force (RIF). This page serves as a portal to assist you in locating pertinent information and content related to RIF in the Federal Government.

When an agency must abolish positions, the RIF regulations determine whether an employee keeps his or her present position, or whether the employee has a right to a different position. The regulatory requirements governing reduction in force are contained in Title 5, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 351. Federal agencies must follow the procedures contained in the Code of Federal Regulations when conducting a RIF. The law provides that OPM's RIF regulations must give effect to four factors in releasing employees:

tenure of employment (e.g., type of appointment);

veterans' preference;

length of service; and

performance ratings.

An agency is required to use the RIF procedures when an employee is faced with separation or downgrading for a reason such as reorganization, lack of work, shortage of funds, insufficient personnel ceiling, or the exercise of certain reemployment or restoration rights. A furlough of more than 30 calendar days, or of more than 22 discontinuous work days, is also a RIF action. (A furlough of 30 or fewer calendar days, or of 22 or fewer discontinuous work days, is an adverse action.)

Doesn't seem to mention emergency shutdowns, just furloughs. So probably applies, but the bill to extend payment does not change that, I'd guess. Unless a "furlough" is legally defined as "a period without any pay or compensation" In that case, the RIFs could not take place until 30 days after their last paycheck.

not take place until 30 days after their last paycheck.

Agencies won't need to consider targeted layoffs' otherwise known as reductions-in-force (RIFs)' if the current partial government shutdown continues for another few days.

While federal statute typically instructs agencies to RIF targeted groups of employees who have been placed on furlough status for 30 days or more' the regulations don't apply to emergency furlough situations' the Office of Management and Budget confirmed Tuesday.

Some astute Federal News Network readers had questioned whether their agencies could RIF furloughed employees if the current government shutdown' now at 25 days and counting' hits the 30-day mark.

There are two kinds of furloughs. "Administrative furloughs" are planned events by an agency "designed to absorb reductions necessitated by downsizing' reduced funding' lack of work or any budget situation other than a lapse in appropriations'" according to the Office of Personnel Management.

548 PDT has been a treasure and delight since he started his campaign, and it's only gotten better, but this is, so far, Peak Trump.

i'm sure it will continue one, but this is just too delicious for words...

i called Resident 3vil at w*rk, to give her a bried update, and we were both laughing.

i can't remember the last time i laughed like that, which is sad, but that just makes it one more thing i am grateful for with him as POTUS.

G*d Bless this man

550 I understand AOC won't fly, I think she should take a Liberty Boat to Europe - next time she wants to go. If we are really lucky it would get sunk by a German U-Boat surfacing by itself in the middle of the Atlantic and accidentally firing one last torpedo before returning to Davy Jones Locker.

551 516 Hey Ben, pointing out the expense and how the trip is unnecessary makes no difference if they are taking the trip and racking up the expenses..

And "pointing out" something is worthless when you don't have a microphone and debate platform.

Shapiro really thinks the world is a faculty lounge or debate platform.
It isn't.
It's a CIRCUS.

This is like a quadruple entendre, isn't it?

Considering that the national approval rating for Congress usually

hovers around 8% approve - 92% disapprove (i.e. everyone likes their own

congressperson but hates just about everyone else's), this

mass-humiliation of Congress is guaranteed to win many fans for Trump.

Not entirely true.

My own Congress critter, I already hates them lots.

WLS in Chicago moved Shapiro's show from 8pm to 2pm and moved Mark Levin back to 7pm. What an awful move.

557 The wheels on the bus go round and round...........
The driver on the bus says move on back............
The Proggies on the bus go wah wah wah..........
The adults on the bus.....oh wait, there weren't any.

Posted by: PattyCakes Pelosi at January 17, 2019 04:51 PM (Jj+59)

558 This is just delicious. By waiting til the last minute PDT guaranteed it would be covered by the media and made the point again that he is sitting in Washington available to meet and Pelosi et al doesn't care one bit for the workers going without paychecks.

Posted by: sharon at January 17, 2019 04:54 PM (QzF6i)

559 Yeah, about my congressman, or as we refer to him, Alcee with the Impeachable Face. I hear he's counting his days. Should be some conversation between him and St Peter.

Posted by: The Charlie Daniels of the Torque Wrench at January 17, 2019 04:54 PM (Jj+59)

560 What I wouldn't have given to be on that bus when it was turned around.

561 "I don't get the logic of Trump denying Pelosi her trip."

It's called "war", Bennie-boy.

562 Hey, wait a minute, you don't suppose he waited until Nance and Shitty had cracked their first 250 ml of fetal tissue blood to call and cancel the flight? Who would do such a thing? Oh, the humanity.

Posted by: Ben Shapiro at January 17, 2019 04:59 PM (Jj+59)

563 I don;t want to hear anyone complain about their congressman. I have JimMcGovern D-Cuba and also have Fauxachontas. If only she would have to resign to run for president. Sigh....

564 Guys?

Guys, you know I'm straight. Okay?

I'm straighter than a ruler made of adamantium that won't contract more than .0000001 mm in the next century.

But Donald, my boy, if I weren't, and you weren't --!

(Instead I'll just imagine Melania saying softly to The Donald tonight, "You did well, my man . . .")

Okay, let me clue you in - this was way fucking funnier, you humorless Vulcan conservative.

566 I mean seriously, where the fuck were these people going? What is so fucking important in Egypt that they didn't need to resolve the budget crises before dicking off for a week?

If we had a real press these guys would be getting crucified.

567 Nancy, you want Belgium?

Go have a Belgian waffle at IHOP. Or better still, Waffle House. Experience some of those people about whom you said $1000 bonuses were "crumbs."

568 Ben Shapiro owning the libs! What a douchebag cuck.

Posted by: Steve at January 17, 2019 05:15 PM (b/ms3)

569 You know the dem leadership has to shit their pants when the bus turns around and the .mil driver says "sorry folks, change of plans".

Anyone ever watch the day Saddam grabbed the brass ring? If jack straw is even half right, we're going to see something similar, just minus the firing squads out back. And pelosi and schiff know it - they probably even have a plan for it.

574 So I was "furious" when Clinton delivered a retroactive tax rate hike and had given Disney's Michael Eisner a heads up so he could sell his stock in the preceding year and avoid the increase. So Congressional donks, I can't tell you how sorry I am your free ride got cancelled.
