Gillette: You're Racists and You're Also Rapists. That's Why You Need Our Razors.

Gillette, like many other companies selling products and entertainments to men, settles on an "Insult and Alienate Our Core Customers" strategy.

cotton.jpg

Gillette, the razor company owned by Procter & Gamble has released a new ad (they call it a "short film") offering a politicized take on bullying and #MeToo. The ad is titled "We Believe: The Best Men Can Be" and the theme is simply that men have been a problem for far too long and it’s time to put an end to "toxic masculinity." The ad features some real video from social media but most of it is composed of scenes intended to evoke bullying on social media, sexual harassment in entertainment, and downplaying of women in corporate boardrooms.

Sexton quotes the Wall Street Journal's article about this:

"This is an important conversation happening, and as a company that encourages men to be their best, we feel compelled to both address it and take action of our own," said Pankaj Bhalla, Gillette brand director for North America in an emailed statement. "We are taking a realistic look at what’s happening today, and aiming to inspire change by acknowledging that the old saying 'Boys Will Be Boys' is not an excuse. We want to hold ourselves to a higher standard, and hope all the men we serve will come along on that journey to find our 'best' together."

Tim Pool talks about this a lot -- Millennial progressives have infested advertising (why wouldn't they?) and all they keep telling companies is "Young people want everything suuuuuper-politicized and #Woke 24/7."

That's not true, but they're very stupid and they think that what they themselves want are what non-blue-haired, non-nose-ringed, non-tribal-tatooed, non-problem-spectacled America wants.

This is how they virtue signal and increase their social standing -- by crowing to their friends they convinced an apolitical widget company to turn its $50 million advertising operation into #Woke political messaging.

They will not learn unless you rub their noses in their own messes, as you would with a puppy that pees on the carpet.

And it's time to boycott every one of these politicized shithole companies, starting with the Garbage Tier Discount Fish Vendor Red Lobster.

The only way to end this is to vote viciously with your dollars until they finally learn, once and for all that Get Woke means, unavoidably, Go Broke.

This criticism points out Gillette's ad actually features a cameo by... The Young Turks. Or at least the ugly chick that beta guys seem to think is at the right level of semi-attractive to make her seem gettable.

6 Gillette is overpriced. Their products are good, but screw them bastards if I am gonna pay 50 bucks for a pack of blades.

Dollar store knock offs work fine, are cheap and you can always find a ho or two wandering the aisles who needs to make 14 dollars the hard way.

7 In the late 80s I was a principle in a company that sold about a million dollars of wet process equipment to make razor blades to Gillete.

They were super slow players while demanding superb service because they were a world class company. We got them with spare parts.

12 Wha -- ? Mr. Empire had me hunting for some Gillette's double-edged razor blades, 'cause the others I was able to find were worse than worn-out Gillette's, but if they've become anti-man, I don't know what to do. His beard's too tough for most findable (at places we go) electric razors, and he's not willing to go for the fancy -- and expensive -- cartridge razors and refills.

::Sigh:: What to do now?

BTW, I most definitely do not think masculinity is toxic. I bloody well love strong men, like my father (Paladin's a dead ringer for him) and my husband. Let's see ... John Wayne, Yul Brynner, Donald Trump ... MEN!

I'm an Amazon reviewer. I'd suggest that if you do not like a certain product, a simple boycott is one thing but why not go online and write a review? I'm not saying write stuff like "This company is run by soyboys," but rather a semi-detailed reason why you don't like the product.

"Gillette razors don't seem to last very long, and the shave quality is inferior to others I've tried, including Dollar Shave Club."

A lot of buying decisions are made online and after being informed by online reviews.....

30 What bothers me is that these execs in charge of companies like this ought to know better but have become so mesmerized by social media numbers (which are ridiculously easy to game) that they are utterly unable to comprehend the truth any longer. SO they get ad guys with a great patter who sell them 'see how many likes this gets, social media impact networking (buzzword buzzword buzzword) cutting through the noise and reaching customers where they live!"

And they fall for it Its not like HR had a go fund me for this video. The Ad company didn't do it for free. Gillette PAID millions for this to be done. And then they green lighted it. It had to go through multiple meetings with executives who all should know better.

Here's my guess as to what their focus group said:

15% of woke people said they'd be more likely to buy razors if Gillette got woke
5% of people said they were less likely to buy them.

The primary driver/enabler/sponsor of this shit is all the GRANT MONEY, mostly GOVERNMENT-provided, doled out to these ruling caste welfare-state losers with PhD's who would otherwise be living like their welfare-state brethren -- living in the projects on the parasite caste dole.

The only way we survive as anything resembling the once-great America is to get the F*CKING GOVERNMENT out of pretty much EVERYTHING, from academia to health care/insurance.

I was seated in a booth behind two old farts living their misguided social security ponzi dreams in Boca Raton, FL.

As I perused the menu, the old farts got up and walked past my booth farting very loudly and abundantly.

That is all you need to know about The Red Lobster.

Look... I'm sure there is some negligible number of decent patriots at FBI. Mostly really old and really young guys, if I had to hazard a guess. But what we have is a rogue domestic intelligence agency that works on behest of the Party. It's a more restrained (for now) version of Cheka/NKVD/MVD/KGB. There are no angels to speak of.

The best we can hope for is to reach a point where they can be jailed, hanged, or tormented and terrorized into submission, or preferably all of the above.

But there can be no meaningful reform from within, because it is not in the nature of these people to do that. They can only be countered by turning the weapons of power, fear and hate back on them.

And so far, our side (and I don't just mean the right, but the American people at large) has not shown a willingness to do the needful. So far.

159 I just want to put it out there that this is like a disease that affects companies.

I first started noticing in the 80s that companies would start building these groups for "compliance", "safety", "community relations", "environment", .... and the groups did nothing.

In fact, their job was what we now call a self-licking ice cream cone. Their job was to create problems (or identify, or uncover) which only they could solve. Most of what they did was sit at their desks and play solitaire (it was the 80s) and you could tell because of the tell-tale clicking when you walked into their office. Oh, and meetings. they love meetings.

But the past 20 years of so, it is now "diversity" and other bs.

These people are like barnacles attaching themselves to productive companies and they add nothing but dead weight and cost. Like a disease. They spread, and support each other in their bs until a newer, more efficient, and nimbler company pushes the old one out of business.

Her big brother takes her in one arm and gives her the ball, encouraging her to try again even though he's like 6 and she's 4 or something. Its really cute and good brother and all.

But the patter he tells her is clearly what he's been told "You can do it, you're strong!"

But... she's a 4 year old girl. She's not strong. In any sense of the word. Let her be a girl, for crying out loud.

181 Four or five years ago I got some crazy deal from one of those dollar shave club type promotions. I suspect I have 100 or more fancy razor refills that work with whatever name-brand handle I've had for years, and I doubt I paid more than $20 total for them shipped to me. They work great, too.

I don't (can't) shave every day, and I dry the razor and keep it away from moisture when not in use so one refill lasts a month or more. I'd be surprised if I ever have to buy razors again, honestly.

It won't matter in the end; all they'll accomplish is making the burning times span a more time, and involve more burning.
Their optimists think they're going to get a first world Venezuela; their nutters are hoping for something along the lines of a Russian/Cuban revolution. But what they'll get if they're lucky is the Balkans, and if they're not lucky it will be the Spanish civil war or the Taiping rebellion.
They're not going to be able to resist the lure of using the Orwellian tools handed to them by left-leaning tech giants, and the public they're being used on won't tolerate their ham-fisted application.

I was at a neighborhood event where a bunch of the kids were wrestling in the grass, and every dad was standing at a distance watching carefully to make sure that their kid was following the "rules". Big kids don't thump the little kids, and little kids don't take cheap shots on the big kids. And when one of the kids gets too excited, dad pulls him out of the scrum to chill out for a minute before they get thumped. It's fucking obvious and well-understood.

Posted by: Martini Farmer at January 14, 2019 07:59 PM (3H9h1)

238 Harry's is actually an interesting story. It's a case of pure business. Some guys one day realized: razors are really expensive and only two big companies have the market nearly locked up. That meant there was room for a new company to come in and disrupt the market.

They looked at Dollar Shave Club and realized the big flaw of DSC: it was just reselling a product from a South Korean manufacturer, and nothing was stopping that manufacturer from also selling its products in the USA. So they decided that they needed to own their own factory. They put together financing and spent over 100 million dollars to buy a German razor blade factory.

Now they sell a good product for a fair price.

I have no relationship with Harry's other than I buy their stuff and I like it.

Gillette's top of the line cartridge has 5 blades on the front, 1 "trimmer" blade on the back, and two lubricating strips. It's over five dollars even if you buy in quantity. I think the dual lubricating strips are a gimmick.

Harry's only cartridge has 5 blades on the front, 1 "trimmer" blade on the back, and one lubricating strip. It's never more than $2 and you can get a break on the price by buying in quantity or signing up for a subscription.

I prefer their less expensive handle, some kind of rubbery plastic stuff with a metal weighted core. Their all-metal handles are fancy looking but I prefer the way the rubbery handle feels in my hand. You won't exactly go broke buying one of each and deciding for yourself which you prefer.

They also have a new line of women-specific razors. We bought one for mrs_jack to try out but she hasn't tried it yet. I'm sure it's fine.

318 IrishEi reports from willow zone/last thread that McCarthy has removed Rep. King from committee assignments. King met with him today. As I noted in last thread, all I saw was one stupid statement wherein King included "white supremacy" in a list of things unjustly considered controversial nowadays (the others being nationalism and western civilization). King fulsomely asserted all the standard beliefs on race etc the next day in issued statements and a floor statement.

So moral leader of the universe and Conscience of the Uninformed Mitt has called for his resignation - what say ye, IA Morons - can we turn that seat D, to add to the holocaust from November?

And as I noted in earlier comment, Sen. Scott/SC has helpfully implicitly excused and endorsed decades of slander of the GOP in his reaction to King's statement (well, to King's one probably slip-up in an interview). He said King's statement was the reason the GOP has been called racist. An idiotic, and despicable, statement. Obviously.

Let's get our harsh denunciations straight. There's not the slightest tinge of racism in the GOP, while for the Dems it's one of three sustaining forces. The GOP is to be condemned for being dishonest with their voters and irresponsible, Sen. Scott - duh. Scott unwittingly shows his own disability in all this.

344 Y'all can just use whatever shampoo you want????? I hunted for ages to find something that wouldn't make my scalp go nuts producing oil. Finally found one and now I don't need to wash my hair every day anymore.

On that note, you would think of the 1000 shampoos at Walmart, they would be roughly bell curve distributed over "oily", "normal to oily", "normal", "normal to dry", and "dry". You would be very, very wrong. There are about 350 each for normal and normal to dry, about 300 for dry, 1 for normal to oily, and 0 for oily. Same deal for face wash - if you have oily skin, f you. I guess all the women with oily scalps and skin are shopping at Ulta (which is where I finally found my shampoo and face wash).

Somehow its never been seriously investigated for its business practices.

384 Looks to me like that ad is more of a slam against bad parenting than it is a man-shaming moment. The point the ad is making is that dads of today can do a better job of raising their kids to do the right thing, even when it may be the hardest thing to do. In my world, it was never OK to beat up on a kid smaller than yourself, and it was never OK to disrespect women, let alone to take advantage of a drunk girl.

I choose to see that ad as a slam against the fathers that don't have the stones to see that their kid is acting like an asshole and to straighten him out. The line of men at the grills is more of a metaphor for the popular style of parenting that has given us the snowflake generation. The guy that breaks ranks is the one with moral courage, as is the black guy that tells his douchebag buddy that catcalling is douchebaggery.

Unfortunately, I don't think that's what Gillette's ad agency was thinking, so I'll stick to my cheap-assed disposables for the odd times that I do shave.

McCarthy (House minority leader) - kids, haven't we already gone over this?

Lackluster time-serving staffer-who-inherits-boss's-seat (this is not uncommon in the House, I know two who did it quite well). Standard issue dishonest mediocre Beltway GOP functionary.

He does show *some* interesting traits, however. I'd say he is a bit bolder and more brazen in his well-founded contempt for GOP voters than even Ryan was. Recall McCarthy, in OCTOBER 2018, suddenly becoming obsessed with border security, intro'ing a bill, making a PR trip to the border. October. After 2 years of congressional GOP passivity/worse on border/immigration issues, following Trump's inauguration.

Really shameless, and unafraid to become a parody in his efforts to hoodwink the rubes. So he's got that going for him, which is nice.

The hipsters are getting old style safety razors again. I had considered it until I found that out. A good razor handle is $30-50ish, far cheaper than a pack of Gillette razors.

Sadly, I've got so much Native American in me I haven't been able to grow a beard in all my 29 (x2) years. A stupid razor will last me literally months.

Aetius, Enola Gay's bomb bay doors were pneumatic - modified from the normal B-29 configuration. All the "Silverplate" atomic mission B-29s had that and other mods. Not that it has anything to do with razors.

432 I switched from Gillette Sensor to Harry's a year ago, primarily because Harry's was half the price. Then I went to order some replacement blades from Harry's website and I was greeted with multiple images of, well, blades. Gay blades, that is. All I wanted to do was buy a reasonably priced, reliable, everyday product. Instead I had to be subjected to a lecture from on high about how I need to purchase Harry's products so that my money could be diverted to promoting the cause of gay love.

Fortunately, Walmart recently started selling Gillette Sensor knockoffs for about 1/3 the price. Problem solved.

Until Walmart gets on the deviancy express...

The British demonstrated true masculinity back in the day.

A real man, you seem would remove his cloak and cover the puddle so the lady could walk over it. Then the woman falls into the puddle because it's six feet deep. Word of advice...get on eBay and find yourself a 1940s or 1950s era Super Speed for ten bucks or less. Run it through the dishwasher to clean it up if it needs it, otherwise just scrub with Dawn. Then go to Dollar General and buy you some of their double edged blades, $1.50 a pack. They're made by Dorco of S. Korea and they're just fine. Then get yourself a can of Barbasol shave cream, or whatever you currently use. Give yourself a little bit of time for a learning curve and odds are you'll never look back. I've been DE shaving for about 10 years and don't regret a bit of it. Plenty of helpful advice available online, like at The Shave Den.

And in one of the how-to videos the guy nicked himself and talked about how that's no big deal, just part of the experience. I decided to stick with the multi-blade disposable cartridge razors I am used to.

If you don't mind the shaves taking longer and possibly nicking your face more often, it should be a good way to go. The blades are so cheap you can literally use a new one for each shave.
