The studies always cite absolute wage increase, but ignore the relative "labor cost" of goods. Even if "real" wages have not increased in lockstep with increased productivity (the linked EPI article cites +9% for wages vs +74% productivity over the past 40 years), that productivity has made goods far cheaper than they used to be. It takes far fewer hours of work to purchase goods that are far superior to those available 40 years ago, and to go on to claim that the standard of living hasn't risen since 1973 is just silly. That biker story is great WD and why I grew to love playing in biker bars for years down here. The overwhelming majority of bikers I've met are just like that crew. Never had any problems in over 20 years of playing at places like the Boot Hill in Daytona Beach and even in rough clubhouses. We didn't know anyone, but we were always welcome and treated very well for strangers.

I like bikers more than a lot of other types of people. Honest, upfront and no hidden agendas. I used to ride, but was not what I would consider to be a biker.
If I was out, I usually would stop for one at a small kinda dive place bikers liked. I bought a round for everyone at the bar itself, not the whole place. That one round was all I had to spend, as everyone then took turns buying. Many great conversations and times from that place.

One wonders what the minimum wage might be, without 10 or 20 or 30 million - whatever the number is - illegal aliens and foreign nationals working here. The world's longest escalators, which exceed 410 feet, are at the Admiralteyskaya Metro station in St. Petersburg.
Apparently the average depth of the Kiev and Pyongyang Metro systems is greater than St. Petersburg - like St. Petersburg, the Kiev Metro system was mostly constructed in the 1950's, and doubtless had a secondary civil defense role.
The Pyongyang Metro has blast doors installed in the stations - I think that the transport function of the Pyongyang Metro is secondary to the civil defense function.

Yeah, and a typical middle class home had one bathroom, and a middle class family owned one car. And they didn't have central air conditioning. They may have had a window unit for the living room and/or the master bedroom.
And one TV in the living room.
This was how I grew up. I didn't consider myself to be deprived.

I'd do it a lot like the trench system of WWI. Barb wire, land mines, snipers, machine guns, flamethrowers, two or three miles deep all supported by artillery. They wouldn't be mud holes, though. Nice steel reinforced concrete emplacements. And we'd use aircraft for recce and bombing where necessary.

I've got my full time job, but those kinds of side jobs can be lucrative. If you're fast, people will keep you on speed dial. I had one of those just a couple weeks ago.

This is precisely how I grew up. Mom at home, 4 kids arguing about bathroom time, etc. We did get an upgrade when I was 15 and my Dad had a good year (self employed). He finished the basement and added a bedroom and full bath, plus central AC.

The Department of Education study caused some consternation when it came out in 2015. Worse, they looked at salaries ten years out, so schools couldn't use the "well, our graduates have low salaries because they are in medical training or getting Ph.D.'s" excuse.
Among the colleges where their graduates made less than high school graduates were Reed, Whitman, Oberlin, Colorado College, Lewis & Clark, Macalester, Grinnell, and UC Santa Cruz. Except for Santa Cruz, all these schools charge about $50,000 a year in tuition, of course.
Nothing like combining a sense of entitlement with poor financial results to create a cadre of Leftist shock troops.

I was born in *1951*. My dad was a dentist. Small town, upper midwest. One bathroom, one car ( dad walked to work) 6 kids, everybody had a roommate! You ate what mom made at dinner. You got ONE choice. Never felt deprived. In grad school (early 70's, a friend said, while we were grilling burgers on a hibachi "cold beer, air conditioning and color tv. It can't get any better than this". He was right. We were 24.

I was three years old, but still remember when my dad and grandfather (on my mom's side) added a third bedroom to our house, along with its own bathroom. They also completely redid all the cabinetry in the kitchen, and added a permanent table.
They did a good job, but... that 1969-era cabinetry? My parents (now my mom) NEVER upgraded it. It's still there, 50 years later. It works and is durable, but admittedly by now, it LOOKS old.

----Yep - eight kids in a small 3 BR bungalow, one bathroom. One car and both Mom and Dad worked fulltime jobs. It worked. When the oldest became teenagers, we had 5 working and sharing the car. There were plenty of times one of us would go pick someone up at work and then the person picked up would drop off the other at work. Sometimes you sat in a parking lot for an hour waiting. No one bitched, that's just the way it was.
We always had enough to eat and decent clothes to wear but there were no extras. Our big vacation for the year was to drive 8 hours to grandma's farm and be dropped off to spend the summer. We MIGHT go to an amusement park once a year.
I suppose we were poor but so was everyone else. I, at least, didn't notice.

Those old things use less juice, and run very quiet. They do need to be defrosted now and then. I think that no one in RBG's social circle dreamed that Hillary was going to lose, so RBG could wait for Hillary to win, swear Hillary in as President, and then retire.
Even if the Republicans controlled the Senate, "reasonableness" and "bipartisanship" would insure that a hard-Left replacement for RBG would still get confirmed.
This has to be an absolute nightmare for RBG - she never dreamed that she would be in a position where Trump could name her replacement.

Restaurants were far and few between. McDonalds was maybe 3 or 4 times a year it seemed like. Not 3 or 4 times a week. Orange juice was a rationed item. Cheese-Whiz came in tiny glass jars that doubled as tumblers. LOL

My kids told me that our family was the only one they knew of that had a set time for when we all sat down together for supper. Most nights at least one of their friends ate at our house.
I think they needed the companionship and sense of belonging.

The first is a chain link fence topped with barbed wire. Then the service road topped with loose sand that will show footprints. Lots of sensors and cameras using wires and wireless datapaths. The jeeps that patrol drag a rake to smooth the sand behind them.
Then the real barriers start. First is primarily a vehicle barrier, short and solid, foundations buried deep. The next, spaced far enough away is the anti personnel barrier. Tall, with sensors starting at six feet up and two feet down. The electricity in the barbed wire starts twelve to fifteen feet up. Razor wire above that on both sides.
Then another road and chain link fence combo with lots of sensors. Including seismic and underground microphones.
The wireless data is scooped up by routers that send it down wire or fiber and laser or microwave to the response forts.
Backing this up are drones and aerostats monitoring everything five miles into Mexico and three miles into the US.
For places like the Canadian border, all we need is a single three strand barbed wire fence to mark where it is.

I'm sipping my usual rum-and, but we did legalize the med pot in Oklahoma last year, so I may have a contact high, except, we're pretty far out in the country.
When I was a kid, the town's main street had men's clothing, ladies' wear, shoe stores, cleaners, theaters, drugstores, hardware stores, real things. Now there's karate studios and boutiques and, as of the past month, a "medical" pot dispensary. Progress!

Good point. I noticed this as well, we had hard rules about being at certain places at certain times. Dinnertime was one of them. To be fair, we were unceremoniously kicked or encouraged out of the house during the summer months - "Do you want me to find something for you to do, or do you want to play outside?" That was great, and mostly illegal today. Playing outside after dark was not allowed for the most part.

I understand that. When I grew up everyone in our neighborhood had a really nice living room THAT NO ONE WAS ALLOWED IN! It was walled off and usually plastic covered. It got used maybe once every two years. But, it was a thing.
Of course, at our house everything got used and everything got trashed. We had a good time growing up.

My folks were well to do, I think. We had an Angus ranch with 400 head of beautiful Black Angus. We ate chicken all the time, parents told us we didn't have any money, scrimped and saved and never went anywhere, no vacation, can't leave that many cattle to themselves. Hardly ever went out to eat.
We never knew any better. Never bothered me a bit and taught me to be frugal to this day.

It was acting strangely. It would start up and operate, then the lights dim and it would eventually stop. I had just put brand new name brand batteries in it. I pulled out the battery pack to see if the contacts were good and my wife asks "what's that noise?"
Her hearing is much better than mine.
I held the battery pack up to my ear and it was hissing. It would stop when certain batteries were out of the pack. Process of elimination I had it narrowed to one of two and threw them both out.
I have never had a new battery fail like that. Apparently the chemistry was cooking off when connected even without current flow and escaping the casing.

It's an industrial kitchen. It has a stupendous fridge, a shit load of floor space, two sinks on opposite sides, a Bosch double oven and a six-top Blue Star range. And a secondary, floating island cabinet thing on wheels. And about 100 sq. ft. of fixed counters.
But, it's also splattered in hickory, granite, stainless steel, and slate. All of it. It's obscene.
They did this so they'd both have room to cook with each other at maximum possible intensity without bickering over things.
And still, a couple of days each year, I end up toiling at menial tasks in the small auxiliary kitchen mom made me build before she got the big kitchen (for the frequent overflows from her former kitchen).
My parents are the exception to the giant useless kitchen builders.

That's sounds great. I have a nice double oven which is why I haven't replace with gas. The rest of the kitchen is very Amish, nice simple cabinetry with lots of space.

I had a pack of Duracells that corroded quickly. They were Triple A's. At first I thought it was something with the remote they were in. But then I looked at the pack and all of those unused batteries had corrosion.

People throw out amazing stuff. Very nice fixtures and hardware of all sorts (not up to code, must go! Not UL, must go! Etc.).
Anyhow, wandering through one such house, I noted the under-carpet foot switch in the dining room, used to summon the servant to clear away dishes, serve the next course. Many of the larger homes had servant's quarters over the garage.

In a lot of New York co-ops they had servants' quarters in the penthouse! If you're in a building where the elevator stops two or three floors before the top that's because the servants lived above. You had to take stairs to get up there.
Funny, now those apartments are the most expensive in the buildings.

One I recall, the guy said a buddy, must have been in the 1960s, he was in the process of tearing down an old farmhouse. He hadn't talked to him in a while. He saw him at a gas station, he pulled up and motioned him over. He opened the trunk of his car, and it was stuffed full of cash, he found in a wall. He said he watched the guy drive away and nobody ever saw or heard from him again.

I think that was common. Though the help worked in the basement, their quarters were on the upper floors. Generally the servants staircase was narrow, and at the back of the home.

I think the earlier comment about the constantly increasing "standard" of middle class living is on point. If you think that you should have the newest, fanciest car, trips to Europe or resorts, designer clothes, etc., and your income is comparable to ours*, then any financial problems you are having are almost certainly your own.
*To be fair, we actually make a very comfortable amount...in the 150-200 range combined, which in the Houston suburbs buys you a lot of house...but we also have a lot of medical expenses, like a good 20-40k worth per year, that the average family does not. Sympathy level for my fellow civil servants = 0.

Got back home, and there was daylight left, so I took the right front wheel off the Studebaker Lark. No brake fluid was getting to the wheel cylinder, and that, too was seized. I was able to clean up the wheel cylinder, and ream out the clogged flex hose, and it now has working brakes, and stops quite well. Needless to say, I am now going to redo the brakes on all 4 wheels: new shoes, new wheel cylinders, and new flex lines, at the very least.
And I found why it rode so hard. The front shocks were seized solid, and it had zero suspension travel. Took the seized shocks out altogether (and the fasteners undid easily!), and the car now rides quietly. New shocks on the list, too.

One piece of advice in the book was that if you want to become rich, don't live in an upscale neighborhood. It's not the cost of housing, but the neighborhood status competition will kill you financially, if you are not very strong willed.
Social media now exacerbates that, of course - if your friends are Instagramming their perfect Hawaiian vacations, it is difficult not to indulge.

I can cut it, mend it, bind it, bolt it, glue it, rivet it, weld it and a few other things beside, which I can't remember at the moment.
What's amazing, is that out of the 33 homes in this neighborhood, only two of us have the tools n' the skills.
The rest?
They've learned I won't lend my tools, unless my skills come along for the ride.

I am getting set to install plumbing in the trailer-portion of this house here in AJ. I got one-piece molded fiberglass tub/shower combo, in near pristine condition for $65. It's olive green, hah. But a brand new one? $375 bucks. A sink I already have. And I got a one-piece Kohler terlet for $65, missing the valves, which can be had new for a few dollars. A new one-piece? $179 and up. And the porcelain part doesn't wear out. Not even dirty.
And I got a molded Formica kitchen countertop for $20, and a double stainless-steel kitchen sink for $40. Same sink in Home Despot: $129. I have new faucets for the bathroom sink, thanks to our friend Chi, and I will buy a new Delta faucet for the kitchen sink, when it goes. And new faucets for the tub/shower, of course. And I will be able to afford to buy high-grade faucets for them, because I have saved a bundle on the basic fixtures.

I have new faucets for the bathroom sink, thanks to our friend Chi, and I will buy a new Delta faucet for the kitchen sink, when it goes. And new faucets for the tub/shower, of course. And I will be able to afford to buy high-grade faucets for them, because I have saved a bundle on the basic fixtures.

Same with the formica, and you'd have your choice of poured in place concrete countertops, tile or we could join forces on a stainless installation.

Jim, it's a damned trailer, sitting on little pyramidal concrete pylons. I don't want 36,000 pounds of tile and concrete in it. The one-piece tub/shower won't leak, and the structure can handle it.
Ditto for the kitchen countertop. Formica works fine; I grew up with it, and it's entirely appropriate for a residence of this value in this neighborhood.
The entire house is "limited life span" materials, save for the cement block walls in the add-on rooms. There is no financial payback at all in gold-plating a turd, and putting granite countertops in a single-wide trailer certainly qualifies for that. All I am doing is restoring it to be habitable, and get a few more years out of it, before the entire neighborhood gets redeveloped.
The true value of this place is in the dirt on which it sits.

around '09-'10, we got a new one from American Standard, after i sent them pics of the eroded clay where the porcelain was eaten away... they were flabbergasted.
somewhere around '16-'17, that one had to be replaced, for the same reason.

Big, get-ahead dinner of 2lbs penne pasta in meat and marinara sauce with homemade meatballs. Also 1-1/2lbs shrimp scampi with linguine in the usual lemon, butter and garlic sauce.
There is an enormous bowl of tuna fish in the fridge already, so I won't have to cook again until Wednesday.
Also have to mop the kitchen because Mom is a Neat Freak and small spots on the floor just will not do.
I think I'll do that now, while everyone is asleep. I can move all the furniture and it'll be dry by 5:30 when Mom wakes up for her oatmeal.
Oh... and my dog in no longer mine. She sleeps in Mom's room now after she lost her dog last month. *shrugs* The dog doesn't seem to mind, so no harm, no foul.

Reading about everyone's childhood memories made me nostalgic for my own. We were so poor until my mom remarried and we moved into my stepfather's house. A/C! Two color TVs! Two bathrooms! (Well, three, but using the master bath was absolutely verboten.) But we still ate at home and no vacations because my parents were working all the time. On Long Island I knew several people who lived in servant's houses, which were as big as anyone else's. The accompanying mansions had been torn down by the developers, of course.

During the Reagan years, when the economy was going like blockbusters, my kids each had a new tv in their room, each had a new networked computer in their room, each had a new stereo system in their room. They even had cable television. Of course I worked a lot of hours, did some consulting on the side, and my wife worked too, at a job she loved.
I read about something like 40% of young women under the age of 30 would like to leave the country. They grew up in the Obama Era, when he put his foot on the economic brakes, and I feel for them. Along with everyone else who should have done better, found that job they wanted, not racked up so much debt. The Democrats want to take us back to the Obama Era.
I wish these young women knew what they're doing to themselves, their own futures, when they vote for the Democrats.

I eat chicken that has been frozen all the time and it's delicious. Anymore I just toss it (still frozen) into the sous vide, set the temp to 170, and forget it. A bunch of hours later, the longer the better, I pull it out, dump some sauce on it, and that's a meal, Jerry.
If it's for the wife, then I'll first sear it on the tabletop grill. She likes grill marks.
The insta-pot I haven't tried yet for chicken. I did make some pea soup in it and it did in 30 minutes what takes most of a day in a pot. Pretty amazing.

Also true about the cost of keeping up with the Joneses. Luckily, my husband and I do not care. It does get a little frustrating watching my sister buy new cars all the time and go on a bunch of expensive vacations, but she's in debt and constantly bitching about not having any money, so...
(I don't really care about the vacations...I'd actually rather go camping as a family than go to an expensive resort just the two of us, which is what she does, timed for weekends when she and her husband don't have their respective kids...but I do want a new car. Mine is 8 years old. However, it's also paid off and has only 95k miles on it. I can probably get another 8 years or more out of it - I'm figuring whatever I replace it with will become the 2yo's first car, and THEN, with both kids out of my hair, I will finally get that two-seater sports car I've dreamed of since I was fifteen.)

But the big difference was playing outside all day long. I never see the swarms of kids I used to. A few years ago they put up new condos along my dog walking route. When I was a kid, a similar project was, as soon as the workmen knocked off, our playground. From what I saw, nothing.

Well, we have a millennial new hire. He shows up for work an hour late two or three times a week. Looks like he just rolled out of bed most of the time. The (free) coffee pod selection in the kitchen is insufficient to his tastes. I've actually seen his underpants on more than one occasion because belts are apparently passe. Yesterday he didn't come in at all. No call, email or text to anyone.

I wasn't going to go the route of soteriology as a defining characteristic, but the principle idea that man does not belong to the State, the Golden and Silver rules, and the "Protestant Work Ethic" come to mind.
Only High Trust societies can truly thrive, and those seem to do best when practitioners have, not a personal value set, nor a tribal set, but a set of immutable transcendent values that originate and do not vary from themselves.
Some might say that the West is a product of The Enlightenment, but personally I would say that marked the beginning of the downfall as once again, The Enlightenment turned the focus of source of truth back to man.

They don't even need to be sneaky, that's the sad part. Look at how we recently had a muzzie woman sworn into congress with her hand on a koran.
The koran teaches that man-made laws (such as, say, the U.S. constitution) are inherently sinful and must be replaced with the "perfect word" of allah as revealed to Mo in the koran.
Yet this muzzie stands up and takes an oath that she will bear allegiance to our constitution, and that she will support and defend it, and that she makes this promise without any reservations. She does this while swearing with her hand on a koran that says our constitution is illegitimate, and that it is okay for her to lie and swear false oaths so long as it is in service of spreading islam.
And nobody anywhere has a problem with this, or raises any questions about whether this woman's oath can be trusted, or whether it's appropriate for her to be taking this oath at all, because to do that would be raaaaaaacist or islamophobic or some such shit.
