Broward Sheriff Scott Israel, Who Permitted Nikolas Cruz to Commit Crime After Crime With No Paper Trail, and Who Did Not Take Action Against the Coward of Broward for Sitting Out the Shooting, to be Removed by Gov. DeSantis

The two-term sheriff, the object of fierce criticism over BSO's handling of the Parkland massacre, told his top commanders that he will be removed from office by Gov. Ron DeSantis, sources have told the Miami Herald.
DeSantis, who was sworn in Tuesday morning, had not made a formal announcement of a possible suspension. Israel's discussions with staff about his ouster was first reported by Miami New Times.

But Jeff Bell, BSO's union chief, said Israel told his staff on Monday that his ouster was inevitable.
"We know that he is telling everyone at the public safety building that he is going to be gone," said Bell, who was at DeSantis' swearing-in ceremony in Tallahassee on Tuesday.

Last week, Real Clear Investigations published a devastating indictment of Scott Israel.

Parents of children gunned down in the Parkland school shooting in Florida last year have never understood two actions taken by Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel: his refusal to fire a campus-based deputy who failed to enter the school during the rampage that took 17 lives, and his continued defense of controversial Obama-era school policies that allowed the  accused shooter, Nikolas Cruz, to avoid arrest and a police record and thereby purchase the murder weapon.

Some now think they have found the answer in a single incident that occurred in 2014. A police report shows that’s when Israel's then-17-year-old son, Brett, was accused of participating in a sexual assault of a 14-year-old boy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas  High School.
The case was investigated by Scot Peterson -- the armed deputy who took cover while children and staff were shot last February. Using the Obama-era guidelines, Peterson's recommendation helped his boss's son receive just a three-day suspension.
"Everyone in this county is wondering why Peterson was allowed to retire so quickly and take his pension," said local attorney Alex Arreaza, who represents victims of the school tragedy. "Normally deputies  would not be allowed to retire under those circumstances, but in this case, Peterson was allowed to. This report gives a plausible reason," he said.
According to the four-page report filed by Peterson, the victim, who was a freshman at the time, alleged that Israel, then the school's starting quarterback, held him  down while another senior kicked him, grabbed his genitals and rammed a  baseball bat between his buttocks, simulating rape.
People familiar with the case say Peterson could have referred Israel for felony charges, but reduced the crime to "simple  battery," making him eligible for a leniency program requiring no arrest. "The school district's disciplinary matrix requires no law  enforcement action required regarding the incident," the deputy wrote.
"A child was sexually assaulted and Peterson reduced the charges to fit a matrix and report it as information. This allowed the  deputy to put it away and not do anything," said Arreaza, who is suing both Israel and Peterson on behalf of Anthony Borges, a  Stoneman Douglas student who survived the massacre, despite being shot five times.

Yup.....but over the last 30 years they began to sell themselves to local cities/towns for a "better"price than the cities/towns own police departments and once they took one over they would absorb the local police department into their ranks. Not everywhere. In some cases the county and city are the same territory (Chicago-Cook County, New Orleans-Orleans Parish, LA, etc.).

Broward County Sheriff's Department is the largest local law enforcement agency in the US, in part because of bureaucratic turf building, in Broward the Firefighters are part of the Sheriff's Dept.

Hmmm...where I live there has been a move to incorporate heretofore unincorporated "burbs" and they then acquire their own local police forces.

Usually, Sheriffs are for (1) the unincorporated rural areas and (2) the county courts.

Sacramento County is unusual in that is has vast swaths of "un-City", namely, built up and (sub)urban but still unincorporated area. But bit by bit the "Un-City" has shrunk.

IIRC, the county dispatch was explicitly instructing them to stay outside of the school. I *think* that might have been at least partly under Peterson's direction, though I don't recall for certain.

So basically, as the deputies arrived, they were ordered to form a perimeter around the school and await further instructions before going inside.

Not at all. Most cops I know try and do the best job they can. The problem is law enforcement in general.
I want my police/sheriff to go after real criminals, not sit in our schools, sit at DUI roadblocks or harassing hard working citizens for money and fun. But fighting real crime is hard work and someone may get hurt.

I don't disagree, but that starts with the chiefs, mayors etc. The average cop has to do what they are told to by their bosses like anyone or a soldier by command. Are there cops that are douchebags that abuse or over use their power? Hell yes! I have a cousin who is a cop and has zero business IMHO being a cop. I know a couple others who are good guys doing a shitty dangerous job. But there's kind of a meme here lately that everyone gives cops a pass because gun/badge/goodguy. I call bullshit on that. Like any profession there's good and bad and none of them get passes.

193 I actually think pretty well of our local PD and Sheriff's department. In 20+ years I have heard very, very few reports of malfeasance. In fact our Sheriff was one of the many CO sheriffs to say FU to Hippielooper regarding the stupid gun laws he enacted.

I have a much bigger beef with the City gubmint, what with traffic ticket drones and "Code Enforcement" thugs tooling around in their little electric cars collecting revenue for not shoveling your front walk in a timely manner, or being five minutes late in a timed parking spot. Hate those little fookers.

The sooner people figure out that the police CANNOT protect anyone, and people stop farming out their responsibilities to government, the better off we will be as a nation. I don't care if they wear guns and badges and blue uniforms, a cop is still Sir Isaac Newton's bitch (as are we all).

That's not to slam the police, that's the reality. Look out for your OWN safety. America is better off with a more heavily armed population that takes that seriously, and if that's the case, soon we can have fewer police officers.
