The Romney/Establishment Attack on Trump Is All About Open Borders, and Always Has Been

I've wanted to write about this myself for a long while.

Dave Reaboi makes different points than I have in mind, but he makes the basic point: all this shrieking about "character" by the neocons, liberal Republicans, and Establishment types is just some ideological camouflage to disguise the real objection to Trump, that is, that it's racist to oppose Open Borders.

They don't want to say that -- they believe it intensely, but they don't want to admit they share yet another key ideological premise with their close cousins on the globalist hard left -- so they pretend this is all about a rather small difference in free trade and the tactics to achieve actual free trade and, of course, about "character."

It's not. It's just that these people have such low character -- they are inveterate liars and are long practiced in misrepresenting their believes and their intentions to the voters they con into voting them into power -- that they lie without a thought about it.

They will go on lying about it. Bill Kristol, Mitt Romney, Jonah Goldberg, almost all of National Review, etc., will continue playing hide-the-ball regarding their real views on immigration -- which are open borders in all but name, just keep doing what we're doing, which is virtually nothing (which is why the open borders people endorse our current #FakeNews immigration enforcement) -- acting as perfect cowards in refusing to clearly announce their actual beliefs and preferences and pretending this is all merely a dispute about "character."

Well it is -- in a way. They believe that anyone who opposes their de facto open borders position is a racist and therefore has bad "character."

They just won't say so. They've grown accustomed to lying to their readers, constituents, and voters about just how monstrously racist and evil they believe them to be. They only gain the courage to state these beliefs forthrightly when, like Max Boot, they officially defect to the liberal Democrat camp.

But your character is bad.

Their character -- all lies and cowardice and self-dealing -- is sterling.

And super-Christian.

We've got now a significant minority in the country--and a powerful majority in elite institutions like media and academia--that believes we don't have a right to restrict immigration into the US at all, because it's racist.

This loud minority is amplified on social media, sure--but conservatives understand that these are the people who’re teaching their children and creating the intellectual environment for them. They see, correctly, that it's only a matter of time.
When Trump says "if we don’t have borders, we don't have a country," that aphorism resonates because it’s *more essentially true* than anything in GOP orthodoxy you'd read about in any conservative media pre-Trump.

The Trump/Romney argument on the Right, at this point, is utterly boring. It's the same conflict, like the Eternal Recurrence, between people who know what time it is, and people who don't. It's rancorous precisely because it's a conflict about perception of the threat.
It's also a battle that’s been won by the Trump side--even if the folks cheering Romney today don’t realize it.
The status quo GOP candidates were totally routed in 2016; both Trump and Cruz resonated with the GOP electorate because they're "America is in Crisis" candidates.
Marco Rubio was the quintessential status quo GOP candidate. It's like he was weaned on Weekly Standard and WSJ op/eds.
His message of optimism was rejected by people who knew what time it was--people who understand that America had changed significantly since Reagan and Bush.
If you know what time it is, and understand that we’re losing not just our common culture American identity--that's pretty much gone--but now, the concept of national sovereignty full-stop, you are legitimately furious at would-be allies who are knifing you in the back.
If you believe this massive cultural & philosophical conflict will be won without "tribalism," you do not know enough about this to be of much use going forward.
Many of the pro-Trump people you hate understand this, and that's why they're frustrated AF with you.
A final thought: Rubio voter types seem to believe that taking in any amount of any kind of immigrants would not change the character or politics of America in any real way, certainly not negative.
For people in the real world, however--people who know what time it is--this insane belief is proof you're so ideologically blinded on something so basic, you can't be trusted.
It's not that these people are stupid or evil; they just believe a bunch of things that manifestly are not true in order to reach what they believe is the only conclusion that's possible given these assumptions.
I'll have to do another Universal Values Delusion thread, because it's worth repeating. It's a misunderstanding of American principles that’s so tightly held, it's become a dogma that’s crowded-out even self-evident, plainly observable truths.

That comes way before raiding capital rich companies and modernizing them with all sorts of "efficiencies". Moving to China to use slaves, freely pollute, avoid US taxes for military and the overhead of our heavy welfare state ... is really not about efficiency, is it?

Restructuring can happen without selling the American Made company to globalists, who then haul it off to their chop shop and move pieces overseas. (or leave it here and demand Americans train their H1B replacements).

But I'd support a wholesale restructuring of the bloated federal bureaucracy, which has voted in constant increases, and never needs to balance a budget, because the feds tax and spend, then spend trillions beyond the taxes. And they will raid your own house (or your lawyer's house if you get in their way).

When did Mitt ever suggest making BigGov more efficient by downsizing and "restructuring". If he had anything to bring to the table, it would have been the lesson he "taught" those workers he put out of a job. "I'm just streamlining" .... but never with government. Mitt is just another commie.

I am out of tolerance. I'll take the under on this one. Those in positions of power or influence (real or perceived) trumpeting the line that unchecked mass immigration has zero consequences on the polity or culture is deliberately lying to you. They may not like it but are willing to pay that price for increased power and influence (which makes them evil), or they may love it due to self-loathing (which makes them evil) or they may love it because of some weird left-wing pathological altruism (which makes them evil), but they know it is a damn lie and they hold the line anyway.

The seeming desire for "cheap labor" for tasks better suited to mechanization has always puzzled me. As a young'n of 29 or so, I still met grizzled ol' timers who didn't "trust" tools or mechanized ag devices.

But we don't live in a libertarian country. If we had no welfare, very low taxes, and the cost of labor was not artificially inflated with taxes, insurance, and compliance fees, then the "eh, if there's a shortage of labor, letting in more people will smooth that out, if there's a surplus of labor, people will leave" economic argument would make more sense to me.

In our current state of affairs, it just sounds fucking nuts.

Of course, that's not even the argument that's being made here. Not really. The argument is two-fold:
1) We aren't having enough kids to support our ever ballooning welfare state, especially social security / medicare / medicaid.
and
2) Only racists would be against letting people "who look differently than them" move in to the country.

#2 is offensive and not even worth arguing about it. #1, sure -- we can talk about it. My solution isn't to bring a whole new level of dupes in to the Pyramid Scheme though, my solution would be to try to begin dismantling and unraveling the entire thing. But if you begin to have any conversations about that, the left and open border types pivot back to #2.

GOP leaders are, and have been for years, lazy as fuck when it comes to raising money for GOP elections. It's far easier to raise large $ from small pool of donors than to raise large $ from individual donors. Bottomline: Immigration issue won't get solved on GOP side until GOP leadership determines that maintaining status quo on fundraising strategy won't result in getting re-elected.

With Obama's defeat of Romney, this issue stayed alive, it was the #1 issue that got Trump elected, and we're still in the fight, even it still losing it.

You graduate only to find out that you're now competing against very nice people from India who got a medical degree for almost free, allegedly with the same rigorous standards (despite India being one of the most corrupt countries on the planet), and they can absolutely afford to work for much cheaper than you can.

The Philippines has the largest (legal) migrant work-force on earth. With 9% of their population overseas, the Philippines sends its' best to work as maids, nanny's doctors and nurses, entertainers and laborers.

In return they get a metric shit-ton of money in remittances, that the government gets a chunk of to fuel the endless graft.

I have said over and again if America needs laborers they can take in people with a two-year contract and then they return home. But of course this is not about filling a labor shortage, it is about open borders and destroying America sovereignty.

If you try to do your own thing, the malpractice insurance is ludicrously high, and your staffing costs for trying to stay compliant with all kinds of laws and insurance company nonsense will mean you're on razor thin margins."

He went in to IT instead.

But it is unfixable.

Let me put it this way: social security started paying out on day 1. To people who had never paid in a cent.

It was always about current working generation paying for retired generation. It required an exponential growth in the workforce to maintain itself, which is obviously unreasonable to assume.

You can tweak payouts, retirement ages, eligibility, whatever -- but at the end of the day, it always required an exponentially growing amount of new money coming in to fund the benefits for the people who were collecting.

It's really a classic pyramid scheme.

Let me put it this way: social security started paying out on day 1. To people who had never paid in a cent.

It was always about current working generation paying for retired generation. It required an exponential growth in the workforce to maintain itself, which is obviously unreasonable to assume.

You can tweak payouts, retirement ages, eligibility, whatever -- but at the end of the day, it always required an exponentially growing amount of new money coming in to fund the benefits for the people who were collecting.

It's really a classic pyramid scheme.

Legal profession has changed radically since I graduated law school 20 years ago. Average wage for lawyers continues to steadily climb, but unbeknownst to most civilians is that that there are two humps in the wage distribution for lawyers. One hump in the low-wage side, and another hump on the high-wage side. Thus, on average, lawyers are either earning a relatively low wage that does not suffice to effectively pay-off debt to improve lifestyle, or a really high wage. There aren't a lot of lawyers that earn income in the middle range.

+ Legal profession is changing (at least on the transactional law side). Big firm practice is in decline because technology is finally leveling the playing field coupled with business clients that no longer want to pay $25,000 for a contract negotiation that should cost $5,000. Lawyers are now competing on efficiency, and that is changing things away from hourly billing to fixed fee billing, and away from Partner + 2-3 associates + 1 paralegal + 2-3 secretaries working on a transaction to 1 "partner" level attorney doing all the work in less time for lower cost to client.

Equals: Even as more lawyers graduate each year, demand for more lawyers is decreasing, further reducing legal salaries. Getting more competitive as between lawyers. NOT the go-to profession it once was, given the ever-rising cost (and debt load) required to graduate from law school.

(I've been closing transactions for 20 years, and now work exclusively for 3 Fortune 500 companies you've heard of...., but do so as part of a team of only 15 lawyers, we don't have an office, and there is no such things as a "partner" or "associate". I'm lucky to be on the high end of the income distribution curve.)
