Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis to Retire at End of February

Is this about Syria?

It does in fact seem to be about Syria.

By the way, there's a speculation that goes around that I think may be true about Trump's relationship with Mattis, McMasters, etc.

The idea is that they try to Option C him.

That's where you know what the President wants, so you write up three options for him. One is his preferred option. But instead of presenting a reasonable plan for accomplishing his preference, you write it up as Option A, which is planned to be abrupt, sudden, destabilizing, and catastrophic as possible, so that no one would actually pick it, even if they were pre-inclined to.

They you present another Option which is an exaggerated, catastrophic version of what you actually want him to do. This is Option B.

Then you present to him Option C, which is a reasonable sounding version of what you want to do.

So you present him these three options. One's what he wants, but in an unacceptable form. One is a grotesque parody of what you want, which is presented to make the version of what you want, Option C, seem much more reasonable and wise.

It's pretty much a forced choice because you've arranged it so that no one would pick anything except Option C.

The Simpsons Movie did a more primitive version of this.

Anyway, what people speculate is that whenever Trump wants something, they present it in the distorted, catastrophic form of Option A-- the option written up as severely as possible to dissuade him from picking it.

And the further speculation is that he has figured out they're doing this and just says, "Yeah, good -- give me Option A."

Mattis loses his Zod "Trump's Indian Tales" name, which was (it pains me to type) "Rock-Face."

He put his hand on the shoulder of his son. "Much you can tell about a man from the way he comes to you, Barron," he said. "More can you tell by the way he leaves you."

Then a wolf howled, and then others, and moon rose.

Gatwick is a major international airport in England. Apparently some people have managed to shut down the entire airport by flying drones in their airspace. They disappear for a while, the officials call all clear and prepare to reroute flights to Gatwick, then the drones show up again.

After many hours of this shit, they are just now considering shooting the drones down.

I would agree, basically the opposite of what the military is all about.

If a soldier doesn't like the orders, he doesn't just quit or even worse, disobey them and try to force his will. You can't really run a war with that sort of independence.

At least Matthis had the class to step out gracefully.

But we really need a movement in this country to stop the interventionism. It's infected every square inch of our government that somehow the US needs to be involved in every dumb conflict, including fighting for ISIS against Bashar.

Trump early on was too much of a sucker for military brass.
Don't forget that PDT (like a certain commentor that we all know and love and who made the Wall of Shame last week without intending to) attended a private military academy in his youth. I have "My American Journey" on the shelf, and one thing I remember from the book was an incident of inter-service rivalry in Grenada and Powell's Commanding Officer gave Powell an order to get some troops in to pick up the students everyone was trying to rescue. Powell being a Staff Officer. Powell discovered that Marine Helicopters were available, Army troops were available, and the CO of the Helicopter company refused to load Army troops because Marines were on the way.

Powell threw his rank around and got the Army troops loaded on the Marine Helicopters, got them to their destination, and raised some eyebrows doing it, including the eyebrows of his [Powell's] CO.

211 There has always been a debate about Mattis, including on this blog. Everyone knows the good stuff, but when Bill Kristol is a big supporter of Mattis you have to do a double take.

Example - I remember a interview where Mattis said he thought we needed more leaders like Tony Blair in the world. What does that say about what Mattis? His real feelings about foreign policy?

We seem to have a lot of military officers in the upper tiers of command who seem to think Global citizen > American citizen.

Why? We have had twelve years of Bush, eight years of Clinton, and eight years of Obama since 1989. What kind of officers get rewarded and promoted?

Note: I don't think Syria is a strategically critical part of the world for the United State to become seriously (key word - seriously) invested in. Obviously not everyone agrees...some think the U.S. should have our military in little fire bases all over earth waiting to be put under siege so people like the former Senator from Arizona can justify a massive invasion of the place. The objective - to make them good global citizens and love each other after centuries of hatred.

219 If they were indeed trying to "Option C" Trump, that is basically insubordination, if not treason. Right?

Commander in Chief knows all the political goals he is trying to accomplish, the generals are not supposed to countermand his directives, neither directly nor by stealth and deceit.

But the Pentagon became politicized, and now even Kerry goes over and tells Iran not to worry, just wait out Trump.

Some are saying no way Gitmo would be used ... military tribunals have nothing to do with all the ongoing sedition. Yet there seems to be a shadow government acting with foreign agents, against the actions of POTUS.

Are we at "war"? (which was the example of Linsay Graham when he questioned Kavanaugh about military tribunals. He referred to those in America conspiring with Nazis, and they were executed). Well we seem to be at war ... aside from the military actions, there are internal military actions coordinated with ??? DeepState globalists. Maybe military tribunals can be shoehorned in there ... since our civilian courts are packed with leftists ...

246 Wow, in the sidebar Ace really has a rage-boner about the new Doctor Who. Which is understandable: Doctor Who has always been stupid and cringeworthy, but now it's stupid and cringeworthy AND a bunch of SJW gobbledygook. However -- lower down in the sidebar, Ace admits to recommending an unrelated video simply because he thought the British girl in it was attractive. So that got me wondering: The BBC chose Jodie Whittaker to be the new token-female Doctor Who because she was thought to be super-attractive and thus get fanbois to watch it and be brainwashed by the show's commie propaganda, pinioned to the screen by her beauty. But Ace seems to be immune to her purported charms, and thus ranks on Doctor Who in a way he refused to rank on the previously mention British video with the more-attractive girl.

So then big question is:

Is Ace's low opinion of Jodie Whittaker valid? Or is the show worth watching just as fap material?

Post all opinions about Jodie Whittaker's looks here.

283 I want to say that this technique goes back decades. I think someone wrote a book about the goldilocks principal about this, but not sure.

This is how "managing your manager" is talked about by people who either never worked in a competitive industry, or who never worked for a real (aggressive) manager. It used to be called the goldilocks option, and I have seen it done many times, (not to me, or by me, but in departments where I worked) and the manager generally gets pissed and explains that if the person can't get with the program maybe he is too thick to understand how to do the job right.

So i am skeptical, but Ace is spot on that DJT would just pick option A. People who are competent (and not suck up politicians) know what they want, and do not back down based on hysteria and smoke.

Yeah, and they're all valedictorians and soon-to-be brain surgeons, physicists, astronauts, etc.

Anyway, the $26 billion dollar estimate is not mine, it comes from the Congressional Budget Office, which routinely under-estimates the real cost of government programs. The actual cost of it will probably be over $100 billion.

But hey, it's just money, right? It's not like we're $22 trillion in debt already, with trillion-dollar+ yearly deficits, a shitload of nearly-insolvent entitlement programs, and several states (CA, IL, etc.) and territories (PR) which are functionally bankrupt and waiting for their multi-billion-dollar bailouts from Uncle Sugar. And it's also not like we already have 3/4 of CA's "immigrant" population (both legal and illegal) living on welfare, and over 60% of immigrants nationally on welfare.

We obviously have money to burn!

An open disagreement is one thing, but a staff can't (ethically/legally?) be deceitful and manipulative in order to achieve their preferred outcome.

Sure it happens a lot, but at that level, it is redirecting national policy and military actions on behalf of some shadow government, or globalist oligarchs.

If Mattis only quit because his deceit was found out, then that is less honorable than quitting (on principle) before the deceit games began.

Agree, except one correction. B. Too late. They are already in the stone age. Hence their logic. Levin was, as were a lot of people here, IIRC. But Trump has indeed proven to be more of a stalwart than all too many "Conservatives" we all once admired.

Levin gets a little too agitated and frenzied-panic-set-your-head-on-fire, like Ann Coulter does, but both are great writers for the most part.

419 Looks like Jodie Whittaker is the Doctor Who equivalent of Barack Obama.

I thought that since Obama was a "historic first", he'd try to mitigate that by being a moderate. Instead, he weaponized his historic firstnest so as to justify his ultraprog agenda.

Whittaker likewise a "historic first" instead of just settling for being a historic first wants to shit all over the series and rub it in peoples' faces (and according to the yellowflash vid, it seems this is in part the result of an active effort of hers, not just the result of her producers and writers).

May she be rotisseried on a spit by the Daleks as they exterminate her with their lasers. And then raped by Sontarans.

That's your difference - you're not talking about people in Venezuela who had spent a couple of decades fighting alongside us.

Knowing a bit of ground truth on the Syrian situation I can say:

a) Humint is now established;
b) The 2000 troops are mostly intel weenies (luv ya guys!) or FID/COIN trainers who universally detest the only slightly less scummy scum bags on 'our side' and would gladly see the whole place scoured to bedrock; and
c) No overt troops on the ground leaves various assets and allies waaay freer to expose said bedrock.

450 We need an American version of the British early 80's sitcom "Yes, Minister". Far too many folks here in the USA think that politicians and cabinet secretaries are actually in charge of their departments. Sure it's a bit different here, but the Deep State had a light shown at it 40 years ago and we all forgot (it never really caught on here, but Thatcher had a field day blaming the British Civil Service).

From "A Victory for Democracy" (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5t4iz6)

"So we avoid discussion of foreign affairs. Or rather we keep all discussion inside the Foreign Office then we produce one policy for the Foreign Secretary, which represents our considered view, and he can act upon it."

"No options?" "None." "No alternatives?" "None."

"What if he's not satisfied?" "If pressed, we look at it again."

"And come up with a different view?" "Of course not! We come up with the same view."

"But What if he demands options?" "Well It's obvious. The Foreign Office will happily present him with three options, two of which are, on close inspection, exactly the same. "Plus the the third which is totally unacceptable." "Like bombing Warsaw or invading France." "We occasionally encourage the Foreign Secretary to produce his own policy, then we tell him it will inevitably lead to World War Three, perhaps within 48 hours."

Posted by: HowPunny at December 20, 2018 07:18 PM (cjJLs)

451 Well, I guess competition has made goFme reform at least on pricing. A quick web search turned up something from 2017 when they still charged 7.9% plus the .30 and now they are equal to plumfund at the 2.9% plus .30 per transaction. (for personal and charity campaigns) How the wall campaign would be categorized and what that fee structure would be is not findable on their front page.

So if they are no longer ripping off as badly in amount they skim, only my hatred for their dropping legal funds for folks beset by the gay marriage law fare remains as reason to boycott them.
