The Many Fabrications of CNN's 2014 Journalist of the Year

Now that Der Spiegel's fabulist has admitted to 14 fabrications among the 70 articles he wrote (though, as in the case of Steven Glass, that number may rise with further evidence), people -- though not the mainstream media (except for Der Spiegel itself) --are beginning to point out his specific fabrications.

John Sexton documents some of those.

One story Relotius wrote last year was about a small town in Minnesota called Fergus Falls. If you're guessing that this was a Gorillas In the Mist style feature designed to make middle-America look bad, you are exactly correct. Michele Anderson, who lives in Fergus Falls, remembers meeting Relotius last February when he came to live in the area for three weeks to supposedly get a clear view of small-town America...

Sexton then quotes a woman who in this town who immediately smelled a German Rat, and who compiled a list of huge fabrications from just this single article at Medium.

Sexton has quotes from that, or you can read the original.

This is the most amusing one Sexton quotes. Not the most important, but the most amusing -- because... it can so obviously be checked and disproven, but no one bothered doing so, and this fabulist knew damn well his editors wouldn't bother checking the "facts" that confirmed their worldview.

Note that he wrote his article in 2017.

There is also a cinema outside of town, where fast food stores are lit up. In this cinema, a flat, rectangular building, there are two films on a Friday evening. The one, "La La Land", running in empty rows, is a musical, a romance about artists in Los Angeles. The other, "American Sniper", a war film by Clint Eastwood, is sold out. The film is actually already two years old, almost 40 million Americans have seen it, but it still runs in Fergus Falls."

This anecdote that supported Relotius' exaggerated story of an immigrant-fearing, gun obsessed small town one was the easiest to fact check and yet the strangest, most random lie for him to craft. American Sniper definitely has not played in Fergus Falls since its first and only run in 2015. To be sure, we even reached out to Isaac Wunderlich, the manager of Westridge Theatre.

Sexton adds:

And sure enough, they reproduce a message from the theater manager who says American Sniper hasn’t played there since Feb. 2015, two years before Relotius visited. The films that were actually showing at the time he visited were: Lego Batman, Fifty Shades Darker, La La Land, Split, Dog's Purpose, Hidden Figures, and Rings. But those films wouldn’t serve to paint Americans as a bunch of culturally insulated gun nuts.

I can only imagine what he invented for his piece on Colin Kaepernick.

Question: Will CNN be withdrawing its award to Relotius as 2014's Journalist of the Year or will it permit it to stand, as the Pulitzer Committee and the New York Times as well did with paid Soviet fabricator Walter Duranty?

Maybe some of our cucks who are furiously leaking to CNN can ask them, given that they have them on speed-dial and all. Maybe they can do some actual reportage.

Or nah.

CNN is not interested in the slightest in being accurate or truthful. Not only will they permit the award to stand, they'll prolly give him another award just to rub our noses in it some more.
I really wish that PDT would pull their WH press credentials. He has more than enough reasons to do so, this debacle is just the most recent one. And he could justify it very easily to the country: "In light of this, how is anyone able to trust what they say? American need truthful information if they are to govern their own country, and CNN has continued to prove they're not up to the job."

69 Understand that he wrote what his publishers wanted to see.

It appears that his goal was to get more assignments where he could live for weeks on an expense account, traveling, getting drunk, and sleeping with locals. So he wrote the kind of article that the editors wanted.

So sure, he was bad, but I am sure he could have worked a little harder and found a town or situation where the stereotypes were true. It is not hard to find the extremes and make them seem typical to the uninformed.

He got caught for lying, but the editors are also to blame for this. They are biased and this is just evidence of their bias. They will continue with that, happily reporting how honest they are, and how they purged the guy at the first sign of bias or deceit.

This needs to be seen as further proof that the whole industry is rotten.

In Greek office mythology, Relotius is the god of staplers. An undergod of Cubicles (pronounced "cube-e-klees," the god of paperwork) he is in charge until Cubicles gets back from vacation on Mount Minolta.

Can anyone explain to me how "snipe hunt" came to be the outdoorsy version of sending someone into an auto parts store for "blinker fluid"?

Snipes exist. They're common all over North America.

The whole thing would make more sense if the animal you're "hunting" didn't exist. Why don't we take clueless city folk on Jackalope hunts?

111 here is the willowed link to experts from Mercury Marine on the myths people spew on ethanol, blaming it for all their engine problems. Its ability to absorb moisture is a bonus, not a detriment. Because it will pass a little water on through, instead of gas without ethanol, which leaves the water to accumulate in the tank.

Many other interesting points ... but yes, cars deal with ethanol just fine, but it will result in 3% lower mileage (some claim more loss for their vehicle, it might depend on the compression of the engine) Ethanol can help fix some problems, like that knocking/pinging thing ...

------------

There has always been a debate about Mattis. Everyone knows the good parts, but when Bill Kristol is a big supporter of Mattis you have to do a double take.

Example - I remember a interview where Mattis said he thought we needed more leaders like Tony Blair in the world. You know it is stuff like that causes you to pause and wonder how invested is Mattis in being a citizen of the United States vs. being a Citizen of the World.

The reality is Syria is not a strategically important part of the world for the United States, no matter what people say, neither is Central Asia. The risks of long term involvement outweigh the benefits of the same. So it better be a real critical life and death situation for the United States that would force us to remove the Syrian government and keep a significant military force there. I just don't see that at this time, Russia or no Russia.

The South China Sea is because that is a dispute over the meaning of international waters where a lot of our ships pass - private and military, and so is the potential threat from China itself. Yet the same people who go wild about massive interventions into places like Syria go wild against anyone who even suggests a trade war with China, much less any other kind of real war with China over potential Chinese aggression.

So you can see why I am more than a little suspicious of Neo-Cons and military officers who go on about being good global citizens.

Knowing a bit of ground truth on the Syrian situation I can say:

b) The 2000 troops are mostly intel weenies (luv ya guys!) or FID/COIN trainers who universally detest the only slightly less scummy scum bags on 'our side' and would gladly see the whole place scoured to bedrock; and
c) No overt troops on the ground leaves various assets and allies waaay freer to expose said bedrock.

I think he actually said Microsoft, I could tell it was a scam call in about 1.3 seconds. But I think he said MS. I love messing with them sometimes.

In this case, I'd allow the use of "Austrian", because I needed it translated into German for me.

Because they also want to get awards. They just haven't fabricated the right story yet.

But we are told daily the walls are closing in on Trump.

Ok then.

I hadn't thought of that before. If true, she's really stupid. Putin is way better at arkanciding his opponents, or whatever they call it over there.

He's good at sending emails to you if you contribute. the first update told us that GoFundMe tried to make it hard for people to find the page, but for some reason they put it back on the trending list.

Maybe when it hit half a million. . . .

200 The bigotry against small towns is amazing.

I grew up in a small town, population about 200 where Fergus Falls would have been the nearby city. Close to the same size as Escanaba. I never did understand the idea that we were hicks. Yes, we did not have some of the stuff available in big cities, but we still had books, TV, radio, telephone, traveled the USA, and internet when it became available. How many of the big city kids learned to harvest trees, help bale hay, play in the gravel pits, run snowmobiles and ATVs, harvest deer, fish the local streams, and have a great high school shop class.

I'm a physicist working on semi-conductor processing and my best friend from high school designed the water treatment recycling on the International Space Station. I think it's the big city kids who had limited opportunities.

In the pre-industrial world, rural people were uneducated and backwards compared to urban people, but that's not the case today with modern communications and transportation.
