Congressmen Pretend to be Fed Up With Mark Zuckerberg's Serial Misrepresentations to Congress

Lot of posing for the cameras, but nothing will happen. Democrats want FaceBook and Google to keep on Colluding to Interfere in US Elections, and Republicans want the bribes they get from the industry.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is in hot water with Congress following new revelations about his company's data-sharing practices, with some senators saying he may have misled Congress when he testified this year about protecting the privacy of users.

"Mr. Zuckerberg told us that this kind of nonsense would end and it didn’t," Sen. John Neely Kennedy (R-La.) said Wednesday. "Now the first time, you can argue it’s a mistake, but the second time, it’s a choice."


"Squaring his comments with the facts is very hard," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.).

In his congressional testimony in April, Zuckerberg assured lawmakers that "we don't sell data to anyone." But The New York Times reported Tuesday night that Facebook has long had financially beneficial agreements with companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Netflix and Spotify that allowed it to gain access to people’s timelines, friend lists, private messages and other data -- at times without the users' knowledge or expressed consent.

Lawmakers didn't say whether the CEO should face consequences. Instead, Democrats and Republicans talked up the need for privacy legislation to regulate how Facebook and other companies collect, store and share consumer data -- even though the two parties have yet to coalesce around a single legislative proposal or set of principles.

Outgoing Senate Commerce Chairman John Thune (R-S.D.) said the details of Facebook's data-sharing arrangements provide "even more ammunition for doing a privacy bill early next year." Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), his replacement, told POLITICO to "count on hearings."

"When companies repeatedly lie to Congress and the American people about what they do with our messages, location, likes and everything else, Congress has a duty to do something about it," Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) said in a statement.

No one's talking about breaking up the monopoly, though.

Everyone's getting something out of this, except citizens and consumers.

We can't go after FB for breach of contract (even if you win, the limitation of liability clause limits your damages to less than the filing fee for the lawsuit) or reliably or uniformly for violation of Federal and State data privacy and security regs, but under a false advertising theory, you could say that the legal terms of service, VIEWED AS AN ADVERTISEMENT, are false, misleading and fail to adequately inform the user about the dangers of using their service....

That's not how this works. The problem generally isn't what you post, it's everything else they grab.

If you are using FB via a smartphone, they know basically every damn thing about you; where you are, where you go, who you associate with and their contact info, what other apps you use and what you do with them. They know almost everything you do on and with the phone, FB related or not, and can infer many other things indirectly.
If you use it on some other platform (destop, laptop, tablet), they still know a lot of that info.
Now lets say you actually do post personal stuff - throw facial recognition and other various bits and bobs into the mix, and now they can infer and confirm a shit-ton more about you from other sources.

I have knowledge of a project that was using deep social media access to determine if a person is a bot or real. This was used, among other cases, for dating services where many people who sign up are not real.

In order to test the algorithms to determine a score for the participant, many known FB profiles were analyzed and connection graphs, analysis of postings and other participation events were scored for determining authenticity.

Several things came out from this: We are an amazingly boring and plain people. There are plenty of dead-ends in the data.

But what appealed to me the most is that the algorithms always considered me a 'bot.

Once you are at the boot screen it is easy. The only difficult part is if your boot loader fails and you are left with a black screen and blinking cursor. Linux itself can be a Windows like as you want, or as console like as you want. The choice of either or anything in between is very nice. The biggest problem is the new UEFI boot standard and the Windows secure boot enabled on most every machine by default. Both make it difficult, and mostly because of the later. Personally I don't even try dual booting, just buy the box with Windows on it, nuke it, and install a real operating system.

I thought the Shuttle Orbiters didn't have that problem any more after TDRS was in place, though they did have the antennas positioned specifically to communicate through the weak spot in the ionization envelope and the Soyuz descent module might not have anything like that.

No, Willow, Linux is free. There are any number of "distros" that can be downloaded for free and installed on your existing computer. I went with Mint, because the Mint desktop works almost like the Win7 desktop. Double-click on an icon to launch a program. Comes with Firefox as the default browser, but you can change that.

And you get LibreOffice, which emulates all the crap in MS Office pretty well, and enables you to open and edit MS Word docs, or Excel spreadsheets. And there are good video and photo suites, too.

I did it all by my lonesome, and I am no way a computer guru. The download sites have some pretty damned detailed instructions.

If you can read a cookbook, and follow the instructions therein, you can install Linux, and any programs into it.

We're on a new thread so you might not see this, but I'll try anyway. Most Linux CD's you download and burn yourself, no cost except for the blank CD. You need to make sure your machine will boot from CD, that is the tricky step with the new boot standard and Windows secure boot. Assuming it does boot most will allow you to run a "live" system from the CD where there are absolutely no changes made to your hard drive. Only when you are happy with it do you then try to install. Many people never install and just boot and run from the live CD if they don't need any sort of permanent storage on the hard drive for their stuff. It has been many years since I've been at the entry stage but I'm pretty sure Ubuntu or the derivative Mint are most recommended for absolute beginners.

You don't buy it. It's free. You download it, and you can put it on a CD, DVD, or thumb drive. And run it from there, without changing your computer in any way. And if you like well enough, you can then tell it to install itself on your hard drive in a new partition, or to wipe the HD, and install new.
