The Saturday Night Joke

December 8 - 6:00 PM

It started to snow.

The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven.

It looked like a Grandma Moses Print.

So romantic we felt like newlyweds again.

I love snow!

December 9

We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape.

What a fantastic sight!

Can there be a lovelier place in the whole world?

Moving here was the best idea I've ever had!

Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again.

I did both our driveway and the sidewalks.

This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again.

What a perfect life!

December 12

The sun has melted all our lovely snow.

Such a disappointment!

My neighbor tells me not to worry- we'll definitely have a white Christmas.

No snow on Christmas would be awful!

John says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again

I don't think that's possible.

John is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14

Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night.

The temperature dropped to -20.

The cold makes everything sparkle so.

The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks.

This is the life!

The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again.

I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way.

I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15

20 inches forecast.

Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer.

Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels.

Stocked the freezer.

The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out.

I think that's silly.

We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16

Ice storm this morning.

Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt.

Hurt like hell.

The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17

Still way below freezing.

Roads are too icy to go anywhere.

Electricity was off for 5 hours.

I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm.

Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her.

Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her.

God I hate it when she's right.

I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20

Electricity's back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night.

More shoveling!

Took all day.

The damn snowplow came by twice.

Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey.

I think they're lying.

Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out.

Might have another shipment in March.

I think they're lying.

John says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me.

I think he's lying.

December 22

John was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white sh-t fell today, and it's so cold, it probably won't melt till August.

Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to go pee.

By the time I got undressed, went to the bathroom and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel.

Tried to hire John who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he's too busy. I think the a--hole is lying.

December 23

Only 2 inches of snow today

And it warmed up to 0.

The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning.

What is she, nuts?!!

Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago?

She says she did but I think she's lying.

December 24

6 inches - Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel.

Thought I was having a heart attack.

If I ever catch the son of a b-tch who drives that snow plow, I'll drag him through the snow and beat him to death with my broken shovel.

I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been!

Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.

Guess what? A second Saturday night joke.

The Xmas Party

FROM: Patty Lewis, Human Resources Director.

TO: All Employees.

DATE: November 1, 2017.

RE: Christmas Party.

I'm happy to inform you that the company Christmas Party will take place on December 23rd, starting at noon in the private function room at the Grill House.

There will be a cash deposit for the bar and plenty of drinks! We'll have a small band playing traditional Christmas Carols, feel free to sing along. And don't be surprised if our CEO shows up dressed as Santa Claus.!

A Christmas tree will be lit at 1:00 PM. Exchanges of gifts among employees can be done at that time; however, no gift should be over $10.00 to make the giving of gifts easy for everyone's pockets.

This gathering is only for employees.!

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Patty.

Company Memo.

FROM: Patty Lewis, Human Resources Director.

TO: All Employees.

DATE: November 2, 2017.

RE: Holiday Party.

In no way was yesterday's memo intended to exclude our Jewish employees. We recognize that Hanukkah is an important holiday, which often coincides with Christmas, though unfortunately not this year.

However, from now on, we're calling it our ‘Holiday Party.’ The same policy applies to any other employees who are not Christians and to those still celebrating Reconciliation Day.

There will be no Christmas tree and no Christmas carols will be sung.

We will have other types of music for your enjoyment.

Are you happy now.?

Happy Holidays to you and your family.

Patty.

Company Memo.

FROM: Patty Lewis, Human Resources Director.

TO: All Employees.

DATE: November 3, 2017.

RE: Holiday Party.

Regarding the note I received from a member of Alcoholics Anonymous requesting a non-drinking table, you didn't sign your name.

I'm happy to accommodate you for this request, but if I put a sign on a table that reads, ‘AA Only,’ you wouldn't be anonymous anymore. So how am I supposed to handle this.?

Somebody.?

And sorry, but forget about the gift exchange, no gifts are allowed since the union members feel that $10.00 is too much money and the executives believe $10.00 is a little stingy.

REMEMBER: NO GIFTS EXCHANGE WILL BE ALLOWED.

Patty.

Company Memo.

FROM: Patty Lewis, Human Resources Director.

To: All Employees.

DATE: November 4, 2017.

RE: Generic Holiday Party.

What a diverse group we are.! I had no idea that December 20th begins the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which forbids eating and drinking during daylight hours.

There goes the party.! Seriously, we can appreciate how a luncheon at this time of year does not accommodate our ‘Muslim employees' beliefs. Perhaps the Grill House can hold off on serving your meal until the end of the party or else package everything for you to take it home in little aluminum foil doggy bag. Will that work.?

Meanwhile, I've arranged for members of Weight Watchers to sit farthest from the dessert buffet, and pregnant women will get the table closest to the restrooms.

Gays are allowed to sit with each other. Lesbians do not have to sit with Gay men, and each group will have their own table.

Yes, there will be flower arrangement for the Gay men's table.

To the person asking permission to cross dress, the Grill House asks that no cross-dressing to be allowed, apparently because of concerns about confusion in the restrooms. ‘Sorry.’

We will have booster seats for short people.

Low-fat food will be available for those on a diet.

I am sorry to report that we cannot control the amount of salt used in the food. The Grill House suggests that people with high blood pressure taste a bite first.

There will be fresh ‘low sugar’ fruits as dessert for diabetics, but the restaurant cannot supply ‘no sugar’ desserts. ‘Sorry!’

Did I miss anything.???

Patty.

Company Memo.

FROM: Patty Lewis, Human Resources Director.

TO: All Fucking Employees.

DATE: November 5, 2017.

RE: The Fucking Holiday Party.

I've had it with you vegetarian pricks.! We're going to keep this party at the Grill House whether you assholes like it or not, so you can sit quietly at the table furthest from the ‘grill of death,’ as you so quaintly put it, and you'll get your fucking salad bar, including organic tomatoes.

But do you know that tomatoes have feelings too. They scream when you slice them. I've heard them scream. I'm hearing them scream ‘RIGHT FUCKING NOW!’

The rest of you perishing wierdos can kiss my ass. I hope you all have a rotten holiday.!

Drive drunk and die.

Patty.

Company Memo

FROM: Joan Bishop, Acting Human Resources Director.

DATE: November 6, 2017.

RE: Patty Lewis and Holiday Party.

I'm sure I speak for all of us in wishing Patty Lewis a speedy recovery from her recent nervous breakdown and I'll continue to forward your cards to her at the Hospital.

In the meantime, management has decided to cancel our Holiday Party and give everyone the afternoon of the 23rd off with full pay.

So ‘Fuck the lot of You and Happy Whatever.!’

Joan.

So, what's the story behind our Jewish friends and Chinese food on Christmas? Here is the story.

It's a modern tradition for Jewish people to eat at a Chinese restaurant on Christmas (and then go to the movies). You might have assumed that it's because Chinese restaurants are open on Christmas Day, and are less crowded when Christians are having a traditional meal at home. That's definitely part of it, but the custom has a specific history that goes back to 19th-century immigration patterns in New York City, when Jewish enclaves and Chinese enclaves were next to each other.

By and large, Chinese restaurateurs didn’t discriminate against Jewish customers. Joshua Eli Plaut writes in his book A Kosher Christmas: 'Tis the Season to be Jewish that the Chinese, as non-Christians, didn't perceive any difference between Anglo-Saxon New Yorkers and Jewish immigrants; they accepted all non-Chinese customers with open arms.

The smell of a wood fire and the smell of KFC. KFC scented firelogs.

If you ever wanted your home to smell like delicious fried chicken for the Holidays, and lots of people apparently do, KFC has made your dreams come true with the KFC Firelog. Unfortunately, it's already sold out on their website.

Their description reads: "Imbued with the unmistakable, mouth-watering aroma of Colonel Sanders’ secret recipe, the KFC 11 Herbs & Spices Firelog finally puts to rest the age-old dilemma, 'How can I make this fire a hundred bajillion times better?'"

Andrea Zahumensky, CMO of KFC U.S., said “at KFC, we have always been proud of our role in bringing loved ones together at the dinner table around a bucket of our world-famous fried chicken. Now, this winter we’re bringing all the things we love – family, friends and fried chicken – together around the fire with our scented firelog.”

Midlife crises from varying perspectives.

Starting a steampunk band, taking up quad biking or deciding to jump out of a plane—ever since Canadian psychoanalyst Elliott Jaques coined the term "midlife crisis" in 1965, more and more 40-something men have claimed to have had one.
Despite the fact that scientists and economists believe there's little evidence behind it, a quick Google search will deliver hundreds — if not thousands — of think pieces, blog entries and pleading Reddit comment threads about the phenomenon (the same for the quarter-life crisis).

Toe jam and tonight's Genius Award Winner.

The 37-year-old from Zhangzhou, Fujian Province was admitted to the hospital after experiencing chest pains and coughing, the New Straits Times reported. And as it turns out, he was diagnosed with a severe pulmonary fungal infection.

Doctors say that the man, identified as Peng, contracted the infection after inhaling the spores of a fungus that can typically be found growing in footwear. At some point during the medical examination after doctors wondered how this infection was made possible, Peng admitted that he had a habit of smelling his own smelly socks after coming home from work every day (why exactly remains unclear), before ultimately throwing them into the laundry hamper.

Fog lights are the shiznit in blowing snow. Directed low and to the right, so you can see the shoulder and the fog line. You won't be able to drive fast, but you can drive safely at slower speed.

114 Question for those in tech. The lead-up is going to require a bit of background, though.

A particular large company had an IT Solutions company contracted to perform computer refreshes for its employees. It had a different IT Solutions company contracted to provide the rest of its tech support needs. A few months ago, the contract concluded for the company doing the refreshes, and the company providing the rest of the IT support took over the refreshes, as well.

Now while the second company wasn't performing the refreshes before the change, it was in charge of scheduling them. And in the months leading to the change-over, the second company overloaded the schedule with refreshes. In doing so, it essentially took all of the refreshes that would have otherwise happened late in the year (due to the standard schedule of when computers were typically replaced) and moved them to the summer.

Additionally, shortly after the change-over took place, the employees doing the computer deployment work were informed that the new company had screwed up its inventory purchasing, and a lot of the needed computer equipment was backordered as a result and not available for deployment. So this meant that the already light deployment schedule (because most of the refreshes had taken place months early) effectively dropped to almost nothing because items weren't available.

Finally, the company has recently put out an announcement that all non-critical computer deployments were on hold as new computers would only work with Windows 10 or OSX Mojave, and the company images for those OSes aren't ready yet.

Note that last year, new Macs continued to be deployed with OSX Sierra until the High Sierra image became available in the spring. I am aware, though, that many new name brand PC computers aren't compatible with Windows 7.

Now the knee jerk response is gross incompetence by the new company. But then I remembered the fact that the end of year refreshes had been moved to the summer. And it occurred to me that maybe the fact that no new computers are being deployed might have been the plan even back during the summer. But I can't think of why the IT Support company would do that.

So my question is, any idea why they might be doing this intentionally?

118 They don't call them Fog Lights anymore.

They're called Driving Lights.

Posted by: Soothsayer -- Fake Commenter at December 22, 2018 10:32 PM (xLvb0)

Fog lights aren't driving lights, and driving lights aren't fog lights. Foglights should be amber or yellow, and smust be mounted low on the front of the vehicle, and cast a floodlight-style beam low and to the right. Purpose being to illuminate the close-in road surface, and to give you confidence of where you are in your lane, relative to the shoulder, without blinding you from the backscatter (see top picture), or blinding drivers coming toward you in the opposing lane.

Driving lights have high-power bulbs, and are meant to cast a pencil beam a long way ahead of you, beyond the normal reach of high beams, so you stand a chance of seeing a deer (or a child) that is ready to wander into the road a half-mile ahead. They enable you to drive safely at night at reasonable highway speeds in clear conditions. Use them in fog or snow, and the backscatter will be brutal.

Many drivers now don't know jack shit about lighting the road ahead, and they drive everywhere with all lamps lit. They sit in a pool of brilliant light, and think they see everything. Well, everything within that pool of brilliant light. But anything beyond, they cannot see at all, because the pupils of their eyes have contracted to deal with the brilliant pool of light, and any dimly-lit objects beyond that pool have become entirely invisible.

The second company was shafting the first company on scheduling by freezing them out of doing refreshes so they would not have to worry about the first company making mistakes in how they were doing refreshes.

AND since the second company had the whole thing sewn up, they weren't worried about blowing everything while focusing on how smart they were in taking over they entire show, and in focusing on how clever they were, and important things like arguing over who got the office closest to the boss in the re-org of priorities, they forgot to do their actual contracted job.

150 @125 The second company was shafting the first company on scheduling by freezing them out of doing refreshes so they would not have to worry about the first company making mistakes in how they were doing refreshes.
-----------------------

I think there's some confusion. The refreshes were shifted from winter - when the scheduling company would have been responsible for performing them - to summer, when the first company was still doing the work.

Posted by: junior at December 22, 2018 10:58 PM (cSguU)

151 114 Question for those in tech. The lead-up is going to require a bit of background, though. ....

....Now the knee jerk response is gross incompetence by the new company.

Better Nate than lever!

153 I generally do not care much for C&W stylings when applied to traditional songs of any sort.

And while it's certainly not my favorite recording, Jennifer Nettles has quite a set of pipes and does a good job of 'O Come, O Come Emmanuel'. Not what one would expect from Sugarland:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vatvUREAPY0

O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Anyone interested in my saga of getting a UEFI shell to run on my new system. I did. Turned out it was a really stupid error. The binary was in a Github folder tree. I right clicked on the file I wanted and saved it, which I thought was the EFI shell binary.

'Twasn't. Twas a link to some HTML that would actually get the actual file. So, I was trying to run a text HTML file instead of a proper .efi binary.

I discovered that only after I downloaded the whole EDK source tree, and then installed the necessary tool chains to compile and build EFI binaries.

All I needed to do was click instead of right click and I would've had my shell.

Basically, UEFI is the successor to the BIOS -- much more complex and capable firmware. Booting and OS is very different. The standard calls for a EFI system partition, which contains boot files and configuration data.

They can all still do a regular BIOS style legacy boot, if enabled.

Anyway, at startup before OS boot, you've got a pretty sophisticated firmware environment. It provides a low level API under which ".efi" boot programs run. The OS boot managers and loaders are just .efi programs that run under the UEFI system.

The EFI shell is just a command prompt that runs in that environment and allows you to do all sorts of low-level tinkering and configuration shit. You can get at shit the regular UEFI setup doesn't expose in the user interface.

The UEFI firmware has built-in FAT file system drivers as well a network stack. You've got TCP/IP functionality right in the pre-boot environment and other goodies.

218 Traditionally in Paris, up until the Commune of Paris, the decision on who wins in Paris in the struggle between the people and the government came down to which side the National Guard was on, and since Paris is where everything important was, that is how the country went.

During the Commune period, the government relocated to Versailles, and sent in the regular Army to crush the revolt and the National Guard. Which is why Louis Napoleon III built up the army, after all.

And seems those "demonstrators" are ...... probably mostly the trouble-makers/seekers now familiar the world over. The masks. The aggressiveness. The yellow vest people were, based on what I saw, fairly normal. March, shout - no violence, even when abused in some cases by the fuzz.

Just about all modern hardware is UEFI now. It's been that way for several years, and I'm just now having to get up to speed on it.

The big controversy with it is "secure boot", where the firmware will only load properly signed boot loaders and OS kernel images. The Linux people were mad at that.

But just about every system provides a way to disable it. It came disabled on this new mo/bo stock out of the factory. It can be enabled, of course.

Linus Torvalds threw one of his famous shit fits over this, IIRC. Some of the Linux distro people, sort of piggybacked on Microsoft's certificates and signing thing to make it easier, and that pissed Linus off. He doesn't want Linux fellating MS.

238 When I was a kid we'd go to Disneyland twice a year, once being the Saturday before Christmas - because it was uncrowded. Also, the special Christmas stuff.

Last two times I went, it really wasn't the same - just swamped, too crowded. Sort of killed the whole feeling. And luckily I did the express ticket thing or whatever it's called to avoid long lines for the big rides. Not anxious to go again. A friend lucked out, his long-planned birthday visit coincided with the big rain storm 2 weeks ago - he said they just walked right onto the big rides, nobody there.

Sadly I think this is now inevitable, and will increasingly be universal. Last month in Japan, Kyoto was just packed. To the point it complicated almost everything. Trains to/from nearby centers of interest were hard to get on. Streets were Shanghai at lunch-time.

252 114 Question for those in tech. The lead-up is going to require a bit of background, though.

Posted by: junior at December 22, 2018 10:43 PM (cSguU)

One thing left out of your discussion is that all Windows 7 computers must be replaced by Windows 10 by the end of 2019 (actually, 14 January 2020) - that is the end of the support period for the Windows 7 OS. There is a lot of related planning going on for corporate IT types and it looks really strange from the outside. There is also the possibility that somebody typed the wrong year for the Windows 7 retirement in a contract and it got moved up to the NLT end of this year for whoever was scheduling the refresh.

It's actually a lot more relevant to putting together a homebuilt PC than to software development. If you're used to buying a mainboard, CPU, RAM, disk, PSU, and all that and stuffing it in a case and then hitting DEL at startup to set up your new computer, UEFI is a very significant shift in how all that gets configured. Especially if you're installing Linux or dual-booting.

One thing I would like to see done by government, and it would throw a bit of a fuck into Silicon Valley, would be to require that builders of legacy operating systems, and of legacy software, continue to offer useful support to the users of legacy versions, as long as they are selling successors. Or else move the legacy products into the public domain, including the source code. A or B. take your choice.

See Hogmartin's post. Any new motherboard or prebuilt system you get now is going to be UEFI, not the old BIOS style, and if you like building your own systems, installing multiple OSes, and general tinkering, you've got to get up to speed on the new ways.

For example, secure boot can be a bitch if you want to run Linux. It can disabled on most systems, but it's something you need to know about if you're into tinkering like that.

Now there's an idea. Make old software public domain after its end of life. I like it.

For the binaries at least. I'd have to think about making the source code public domain as well. But I'd tend to go with it at first blush.

The details would have to be hashed out, but basically, if it's "abandonware", then everything should be public domain, binaries and source code and everything.

One of Polliwog/IC's Warcraft buddies is a trucker who joins in from the laptop over phone wifi. With voice chat and everything. It kind of blew my mind the first time he said he'd have to log out because someone had showed up to open the gate to let him drop the trailer because I didn't realize that you could get that kind of gaming-quality bandwidth and latency out of a data tethering plan.

Are you on wireless in a sleeper cab or something? How does that work?
Posted by: hogmartin at December 23, 2018 12:11 AM (t+qrx)

Overthinking is me. All day every day. And losing track of where I'm supposed to aim the fucking thing. I'm pulling the last of my fucking hair out and I'm desperate to make this career work.

Anywho...

So I've only been with this company for two weeks and it's all training right now. We've done two trips to the same place in Washington State and we're about to do the same trip for a third time in a row. But yes, we sleep in the truck. It's set up as a team drive. So my trainer does a couple of hours of observation...well...whenever he feels like it...and sleeps while I drive and I sleep while he drives. (It's actually a bunk so we don't have to spoon if we were to sleep at the same time.).

Posted by: hogmartin at December 23, 2018 12:13 AM (t+qrx)

Well truck stops are really the only place you can shower and also offer thighs like laundry services so that's totally cool.

Lot lizards are, from what I hear, friendly lasses what offer certain services to lonesome truckers for a small fee. Fuck that! I got my Hulu subscription, among others, so I'm covered.

311 A story related to the top picture...

Back in the late 80's I was riding a 1980 Yamaha XS 850 Special, Ruby Red. It was in mid January near as I can remember and I drove out to my best friends trailer to visit and drink a few beers.

It was cold so I wore my Carharts, unheated snow gloves and as always my full face helmet with a neck glove to keep the wind out.

Did I mention it was cold, and January?

So anyhow, weatherman had suggested it might snow but this being Alabama the odds of him getting it right were pretty close to 0. I ride out to my friends place with a 12 pack strapped to the rack on back to keep it cool. We proceed to have a good time and around 11ish I figure its probably a good time to head out as my friend, his wife and I had consumed the beer.

I will admit that it was probably not the smartest to hop on a bike even mildly inebriated but hey, I'd done worse and even made it past a sobriety check point so sloshed that I dropped my wallet when trying to hand it to the cop who picked it up, glanced at my DL, handed it back and waved me through. Anyways, so I bundle up, say goodbye and walk out to my bike and hopped on. Plopped right over to the left and trapped me on the ground when I tried to kick it over. I honked on the horn till my buddy came out and freed me, yes, he pointed and laughed, so did his wife. I got it fired up, he went back inside and I rolled off heading to the highway.

Once on the highway it started snowing and when I accelerated it looked just like I was jumping to light speed just like it did in Star Wars. I was the only thing on the road so I would slow down to a crawl and then accelerate, repeatedly. It was a lot of fun for a while till I decided that driving on two wheels on snow might not be such a good idea and cautiously drove the next 15 miles home.

So yes, it really does look that damn cool, just do it in a vehicle with four wheels and heat.

328 @252 One thing left out of your discussion is that all Windows 7 computers must be replaced by Windows 10 by the end of 2019 (actually, 14 January 2020) - that is the end of the support period for the Windows 7 OS. There is a lot of related planning going on for corporate IT types and it looks really strange from the outside. There is also the possibility that somebody typed the wrong year for the Windows 7 retirement in a contract and it got moved up to the NLT end of this year for whoever was scheduling the refresh.
------------------

The Windows thing doesn't really surprise me. I've heard that the brand of PC computer that the company is using now only sells computers that don't support Windows 7. I've encountered that in the past. For instance, I saw new Dells back in mid-2017 that wouldn't accept a Windows 7 image.

But the excuse that they can't deploy Macs until they have a Mojave image ready doesn't hold water. Mojave just came out in September of this year. Sierra was still being used on images for around six months after High Sierra was released at the same time last year. And three months to get a new image ready and all the way through testing would be an absurdly fast turn around time for many of the bigger enterprise installs, based on what I've seen.

That's at 600 S. Idaho Road in Apache Junction, AZ. I have driven past it dozens of times.

The trailer is worth practically nothing. Sad, but true. Some parks will grandfather in old trailers, but if a trailer is sold, it has to be moved out. It's their way of keeping the RV resorts looking attractive. And lot rent goes on, year in, year out, so for snowbirds, that expense can be onerous.

And there are restrictive covenants on a lot of things one might like to do. No kids, no pets (in many parks). Work on your car? uh-uh. Plant a garden, other than few cactus and flowers? Nope.

It works for some people, not me.

An actual "trailer", with it's own pivoting front axle and tongue connected by pintle-hitch to the towing vehicle, is old-tech for a reason. 'Cause that's one tough SOB to back up, period.

The tandem rigs, where the fifth-wheel attached semi-trailer is then pulling a "mule", which is a front axle equipped with it's own fifth-wheel, on which to mount a 2nd semi-trailer?

Yeah, back that one up, Chief.

And up in Montana and the Dakotas, at least in the '70s n' '80s, even "triples" were allowed on the roads.

Shades of Aussie "Road Trains", but without enough trafficless desolation to make that a safely considerable option.

The modern 53' semi-trailer carries damn near the total load of the "doubles", but is far, far safer, and actually easier to back down than a shorter rig, altogether.

But no way would I want to sign up for the Over The Road gig. I salute and seriously respect you guys n' gals who do.

I really need to be home more often than that, for all kinds of reasons.

Which is why for my "retirement" job, I'm aiming at a Class B CDL with Passenger n' Air Brakes endorsement.

Tour bus gigs. Local stuff. Airport shuttles, etc.

A 55 passenger Prevost or VanHool is damn near as easy to drive as an F-250 longbed. Just a LOT more mass involved.

Bonus. Passengers tend to offer tips. Cargo, doesn't.

No, the total annual income won't compare. But the quality of life will suffice.

No, he's right about the paying rent. It is a costly lifestyle for those on a fixed income. And you don't build equity; quite the opposite. That nifty new double-wide you bought new for $12,000 in 1988 is now worth $5000 or so, if you can find a buyer. Most parks will not allow you to move a trailer that old into them. Even insuring one that old can be hard. Trailers depreciate.

Having said that, a park model trailer is a good way to get one's feet wet in the resort community experience, and if one really likes it, then you can move on to a real stick-built house in the same community, in some instances. many parks are trying to up-market themselves into gated communities of stick-built homes and high-end park models.

No. They're out for weeks and months at time. The high-end covered car carriers, many have double-condo "sleepers" on 'em... mini RV's on the semi chassis.

Local "three car" carriers, which are often pulled by F-350 class trucks, haul from auctions to dealers n' back. Hard labor, that. Any car-hauler is hard labor at pick up and delivery.

The bus gig's hard labor is some overweight luggage, now n' then.

In this local market, the "overnights" are runs to n' from the Louisiana casinos. Coveted runs, those.

OTOH, a mobile home on land you own makes good sense. You can have comfortable, if not luxurious accommodations set up very quickly, and as the home depreciates, hopefully the land gains value, and after X number of years, you can sell out at a profit.

If i were to sell my present house in AJ, I would sure consider buying a larger patch of land a touch more rural, and then buy one of those soon-to-be orphaned park models, and set it up on my land.

The biggest RV's going don't have as much room in them as even a single-wide mobile, most of which are 50 feet long. And none of that interior space is eaten up by engine and power train.

RV's a great, and some are quite roomy, but they are not houses. A single-wide mobile is a very small house, but it is a house, for some values of "house". And a double-wide is to all intents and purposes, a real house, save for the depreciation factor. At least it "lives" like a house, as far as your use of it goes.

455 Obama wanted to deliberately harm the tourism industry as it hurt people he deemed to be against his Commie shit. Tourists were held at gunpoint in some cases. I was camp hosting on a BLM site just outside Moab and they forced me to shut down my camp. I have enough tools to choke a standard 20 ft. shipping container.

So, I'll buy a 40 footer, configured as a shop.

The rent I'll have to pay is for where I'll park and stow the thing.

But even if I were to move a boat from Galveston to Pensacola, moving the container is but a trucking-contract away from fruition.

The gardening though? I've seen yachtsmen with containerized growth on their docks n' decks. And at my last marina, the un-developed land there made one yachtsman a mighty fine small veggie patch, which the local wildlife found to be quite delicious.

470 Actually, Mike H., I think the NP people who went along, who didn't at least do a "blue flu" or other obstructionist stunt, back in 2013, should be whipped and deported. Not that I'd spent much time thinking about the NP Service, but my view of them instantly dropped to below zero. Especially the vermin who went to the effort to block WWII vets from Honor Flights, probably their only chance to see their memorial, from visiting it on the Mall (an open, unstaffed area specially blockaded, with rented barriers).

Sounds ridiculous, but to me that was a key milestone moment in my assessment of the country, and how it had transformed. There was zero political cost to that outrageous vandalism, that just 10 years earlier, probably, would have been a political disaster.

A big data point for those who use more than inertia and sentimentality in assessing the country where they happen to live at the moment.

482 Moab has extrordinary recreational activities, about 55 good to excellent restaurants, a library that has been named best small town library in America, a pretty decent community hospital. It does NOT have a WalMart due to them being told to butt out and few if any chain restaurants such as Olive Garden, Red Lobster, TGIF etc., mostly just real ones and almost every cuisine covered, as for example three or four Thai places, an excellent sushi place (and I have spent time in Japan so I know good sushi) and so forth. Housing is expensive though. Lots of folks want to live here.

528 RE Snow plow joke. That is exactly how I felt when I lived in Saratoga Springs, NY. Except for the Christmas morning when I left work 10 miles outside of town and the snow plows had to run the highways yet. I had to plow the road with my car guessing where the road was using those poles with the balls on top.

As for the Christmas parties at work. The company shit-canned ours (and all of the company parties) because of liability concerns for DUI.

And we used to have an annual "pig pickin'/camping get together in the woods next to the lake every year after it turned cold. That was not organized by "the company" even though it had some members of management involved. But alas only males were invited due to concerns by employee's wives. That ended when two new hire scrunts complained of sex discrimination.

It just shows you, you never can keep something good for having fun in this day and age.

530 For the early Horde: Prayers, please.

Mom is awaiting a transfer to a hospital bed from the Urgent Care where they made a preliminary diagnosis of severe anemia. So they need to find out where it's coming from.

And I am The Worst Daughter Ever, for calling her malingering bluff, refusing her an extra oxy, telling her I'd see her in the morning. So she called 911 on her own, and I met the ambulance drivers in her living room.

I came home to shower, sleep, and reach out to the empty halls of the ONT.

A complete Milankovitch axial tilt cycle is 41,000 years. The earths axis tilts between 22.1° and 24.5° degrees. Progressively in one direction for about 20,500 years, then gradually over the next 20,500 years returning to the starting point. We're midpoint in the direction of progressively less winter sunlight on the Northern Hemisphere. In about 10,000 years that will begin to reverse.

We all need to get used to progressively colder winters, unless Global Warming provides us some relief.

If the guy who got a D- in his college Earth Sciences class is to believed, yeah.

The cool thing about Milankovitch cycles is that there are three of them. When all three coordinate in the worst way possible, the planet slips into an Ice Age. Right now we're only hitting two out of the three.

Al Gore doesn't take a single one of the three cycles into account for the planets constantly changing climate. He's happy with a single variable, carbon dioxide. Which is certainly the absurd work of a D- student.

Posted by: Vic at December 23, 2018 05:43 AM (mpXpK)

Some of use are old enough to remember when our teachers in the 1970s told us of the impending Ice Age. They also told us that the US was now metric so get used to it. A year or so later they stopped talking about metric an the "next ice age". But like normals, and unlike now, they did not try to force global warming on us either, they let it die.

Maybe global warming is a thing, the issue has become so politicized that it is almost impossible to hear any proponent without a lot of skepticism. These people politicized the issue and marginalized themselves. If man is truly causing a catostrophe, I would think some smart people with no agenda would be proving this to all.

I think it was Rush who first brought up the idea of watermelons. Watermelons are leftists who are green on the outside and red on the inside. The idea is that when the Soviet Union fell, pinko Americans who hated capitalism needed a new schtick. They were reds, but they cloaked their anti capitalism in green. If the Commies could not take down America, the greenies could by saying capitalism is destroying the earth.

I am open to proof that global warming is real and man is causing it by building things. But the issue needs to be de politicized, the fake news has to end and people need to bring verifiable facts to the table without other agendas.

All the "fact" they have brought to the table so far have turned out to be lies. I would not trust a single thing that any liberal says about globull warming. Especially since my own measurements show we have been cooling since I began keeping records.

And that is backed up by the raw numbers measured by reputable sources that haven't been "normalized by NOAA or NASA.

Your science is better than mine I am sure. I am very sceptical about the whole thing but it is clear they have convinced a crap load around the world. Hell, in the UK, when it rains they blame "climate change". Funny, because I thought when it went from not raining to raining, that is kinda the definition of climate change.

Again, I blame the politicization by the left. They politicized it, they cried wolf over and over, and now they are mad when we don't believe them. Again, provide proof and we can discuss this. But turning out all the lights and moving into caves is a non starter. And I don't want to fund your hair brained green start up with Uncle Sam's money either.

Posted by: Quint at December 23, 2018 06:16 AM (n13/j)

577 This trucker knows the view shown in the top picture all to well. As for CAGW? It's a failed hypothesis.
The physics the models are based on demands that a persistent "hot spot" be present in the upper troposphere over the equatorial band. Nothing of the sort has appeared and thus the hypothesis has been falsified.

Not a single metric of weather we are and have been experiencing falls outside the parameters of natural variability according to what we know of the climate history of this planet. And the temperature has been much lower at times in the past when the level of CO2 was much higher.

The issue cannot be "de-politicized" because it was a fabrication created for political/social change/financial change objectives in the first place! It should always be remembered that the UN is a political body concerned with expanding it's power and authority more than anything else and the IPCC is it's creation. Every word of the periodic reports from climate change reports they create is parsed by politicians before they are published.
