Muh Private Monopolistic Overlords: Google Schemed To Block Breitbart from Making Money on Ads

Hey, maybe those guys at AEI being paid off by Google can type us up a reason we shouldn't fear an ultrarich, ultraleft Monster Tech company which has made the American Political System its next target for acquisition.

"THE GOOD CENSOR"

An internal company briefing produced by Google and leaked exclusively to Breitbart News argues that due to a variety of factors, including the election of President Trump, the "American tradition" of free speech on the internet is no longer viable.

Despite leaked video footage showing top executives declaring their intention to ensure that the rise of Trump and the populist movement is just a “blip” in history, Google has repeatedly denied that the political bias of its employees filter into its products.

But the 85-page briefing, titled "The Good Censor," admits that Google and other tech platforms now "control the majority of online conversations" and have undertaken a "shift towards censorship" in response to unwelcome political events around the world.

...

Responding to the leak, an official Google source said the document should be considered internal research, and not an official company position.

The briefing labels the ideal of unfettered free speech on the internet a "utopian narrative" that has been "undermined" by recent global events as well as "bad behavior" on the part of users. It can be read in full below.

It acknowledges that major tech platforms, including Google, Facebook and Twitter initially promised free speech to consumers. "This free speech ideal was instilled in the DNA of the Silicon Valley startups that now control the majority of our online conversations," says the document.

The briefing argues that Google, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are caught between two incompatible positions, the "unmediated marketplace of ideas" vs. "well-ordered spaces for safety and civility."

The first approach is described as a product of the "American tradition" which "prioritizes free speech for democracy, not civility." The second is described as a product of the "European tradition," which "favors dignity over liberty and civility over freedom." The briefing claims that all tech platforms are now moving toward the European tradition.

The briefing associates Google’s new role as the guarantor of "civility" with the categories of "editor" and "publisher." This is significant, given that Google, YouTube, and other tech giants publicly claim they are not publishers but rather neutral platforms-- a categorization that grants them special legal immunities under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Elsewhere in the document, Google admits that Section 230 was designed to ensure they can remain neutral platforms for free expression.

More excerpts from The Good Censor, more admissions that Google and other tech companies have become full-on media companies making peddling their own editorial line and should not have special immunity that other media companies do not, and a link to the document itself at the link.

Gee, I wonder why so few "conservative" sites are discussing this.

I'm sure Pierre Omidyar's most recent website The Bulwark will have a post on this.

AEI's blog, too. And CEI.

I really can't recommend The Creepy Line enough. It's free on Amazon Prime, or a couple of bucks to rent on Amazon if you don't have prime.

If you want a free preview, the psychologist who proved the power of Google's search-function manipulation talked to The Federalist yesterday or the day before. I haven't listened yet so I don't know if he gets into the vote manipulation study or just Google's creepy surveillance empire.

42 They also serve as major gatekeepers, of course. If they don't like what you say, they won't let you post it. If they do, they'll deindex and demonetize it. Ultimate stiflers.

They also strangle innovation in many ways. A shocking amount of venture capital and startup funding go to the big tech companies for their infrastructure. A lot of the VC and startup business is also a money laundry for big tech, and allows them to pull the plug on anyone they don't like.

None of this matters, though. They are also either a monopoly or an oligopoly depending on context, and the oligopoly openly colludes in restraint of trade. Time for FTC to break these guys up.

And yes, I know that something like this has never been done before - it isn't like breaking up a manufacturer or other typical businesses - but we need to figure out how it's done. If that means that evildoers get crushed in the process of figuring it out, then that is a risk I am willing to take.

Brave is a browser (like Chrome or Firefox), not a search engine (like Google or Bing). For search, I usually use DuckDuckGo. They have a couple of backends (including Google), but they anonymize and do their own ranking and sorting from various inputs. It works reasonably well for most things in my experience. For purely technical searching, Google is still superior in my opinion.

Therefore, since contrary to the bullshit spewed by it and their allies in the Democrat-Leftist movement, they are actively and aggressively biased against the enemies/opponents of that movement, it must be broken up. Abortion was ruled upon mostly based on the right to privacy. So how come we don't have a right to privacy when it comes to the information that we generate? I never approved of companies using my information for profit, especially when I'm not compensated in any way. To me, that's the rough equivalent of me doing business in another company's name, which is illegal.
All of this harvesting of everyone's personal data should've been "opt-in" from day one. And if we had a government that truly protected our rights, it would've been.
I have the right to my privacy. I have the right to not be under constant surveillance. I have the right to determine whom I share my information with all the time and under all circumstances. I have the right to be free from advertising if I choose.

Saw this in the military.

There was an international incident where a couple of Officers were clearly in the wrong... but both had connections.

Case got shot up to Inspector General, where it languished for YEARS. But it allowed them to answer every question with, its under investigation by the IG.

Then of course, nothing was ever found... years later it had been forgotten, and the Officers Absolved because, well, they were investigated.

It's a bit more complex than that. She doesn't shy from acknowledging some of the wreckage that goes hand in gland with it but refuses to engage in revisionist history and pretend it hasn't always existed on the margins of western society.

I mean is it worth having a few more more business rules that effect like 5 companies in order to have a more open political dialogue where conservatives can actually use their 1st Amendment rights in the United States?

Or for some conservative whores (beyond those actually being paid Hushola money), is this all about their FAANG stocks not taking a hit from government regulation?

This news is beyond significant. It is the future of mankind. THIS is the battle-line that has been drawn.

They just admitted that every single "conspiracy theory" believed by conservatives is actually true. We were, in irrefutable fact, right all along.

But "being right" doesn't win us the war. What we were right about is that we are controlled, lock stock and barrel, by totalitarian overlords who view themselves a beneficent nanny-state gods, and this have no shame and no remorse for their actions.

They just admitted that were there to be a free discussion, a fair exchange of ideas in society, that the Left would Lose the Argument. So the only way for them to Win the game - -which they fully intend to do -- is the changes the rules of the game entirely, by simply muzzling their opponents, and not allowing them to speak at all.

This is it. This is our hill to die on.

Suburban residents are encouraged to evacuate to rural encampments where you will be training in small arms and basic military tactics. Since our government appears to be populated with imbeciles, it might be good to present this issue in a language even they can understand, maybe.

We all have the right to free speech. If there's anything you don't like on that Intarwebz thingy, nobody's forcing you to read or hear it: you have the right to block them, and only them. You don't have the right to block me when I haven't said or done anything. I can say whatever I like just as you can. Turn it around on them, maybe they'll get the argument then.

Make it individualistic, since that's what their big deal is all about. Recall all those videos shot on kollidge campii where the students were asked if they'd give up a few of their GPA points to other students? All of them said, "Um, no. That's not fair to me. I studied hard to get my grade."

292 It's so tiresome watching the people who rant and scream and denigrate others the most then endlessly claim to value "civility."

Posted by: Brewdog at December 13, 2018 01:45 PM (oNFAg)

293 I read through the presentation. I found it to be relatively reasonable considering how unbelievably left wing the corporate culture is at Google. It's true they talk out of both sides of their mouths about whether they are publishers or platforms and there's no question they're leaning hard on conservative content creators (we all know what they mean by "civility").

If you assume for a second that the management team wants to continue as a profitable corporation, free of regulation (not a nest of left wing loons) this could be "life threatening" for them and they need to be looking at it seriously.

Google (Facebook, Twitter) have a big problem on their hands going forward, to wit: being the "moral arbiters" of the internet. No way in hades their going to be able to please everyone. I don't think they ever considered this problem as they were becoming internet leviathans. Their big mistake was casting their lot with one side of the political spectrum over the other in the first place. The left thinks they own them (they may be right), and the right increasingly distrusts them (with good reason).

They are having major problems with the EU lately regarding privacy, the "right to be forgotten", news snippets in search results etc. with the potential for huge fines being levied. The last thing they want is for the US govt. to start sniffing around with regulation (not sure we really want that either what with the Dems taking over the house next year). They desperately want to be in China (that's where the growth is) but they know that's a stink bug for them to even mention and they know they'd be making a deal with the devil.

In my humble opinion, like minded people don't need any of these well known tech giants to get heard. Word has a way of getting around the internet whether they like it or not. The real threat to freedom is when the CDNs and ISPs like Cloudflare, can effectively "dissappear" websites from the internet (see GAB) and companies like Visa, Master Card, Patreon refusing to allow monetary exchange because of "unpalatable" opinions.

294 This is where their 'rules' on trans, guns, etc. are leading. It will be like free speech on universities - non-existent. If you don't think kids should start transitioning before they can tie their shoes, you'll be permanently banned. They can't defend their positions, so they're just going to eliminate any opposing voices and declare victory. They've done it in education, most of the media, and entertainment. And I don't see anything stopping them.
