Possible Terror Attack in Strasbourg, France Christmas Market; Two Reported Killed, 11 Wounded, 2 Critically; Suspect "Identified" and Being Chased

A man has opened fire in Strasbourg's town center, hitting several people. He is currently at large.

Update: There are more updates below, but an important one is this: Police have "identified" the gunman and are currently chasing him.

Update: New report says two dead, 11 wounded, two of those in critical condition.

Shocker: Officials now speaking of a terrorist attack. Officially, the authorities have begun to evaluate if it was/is a terrorist attack. Unofficially they are confirming their belief that it was/is.

"Serious public security event happening in Strasbourg. Residents are asked to remain in their homes. More information to come, following word from authorities."

"Avoid the area around the police headquarters."

This is obviously all fake. France has punishing gun laws so this is of course impossible.

This must all be staged by RUSSIANS

Most recent claims are one person killed, and either six, nine, or ten injured.

No one has said the shooter has been caught yet.

Live Feed from Strasbourg:

This guy, a European Minister of Parliament, says he's right in the thick of it, on the floor at a restaurant:

Sounds of gunfire in the streets of Strasbourg

Panic in the main street

Everyone is laying down in the restaurant

Pistol?

Police with submachineguns running down the street

A commenter points out the submachineguns referred to might be H&K MP5's.

Now police have "identified" the gunman and are chasing him.

New report says two dead, 11 wounded, two of those in critical condition.

Officials say they're evaluating if this was a terrorist attack; unofficially, they say there was a terrorist motive.

More video, this time of troops flooding the streets:

103 Well shit I thought Strasbourg was in Germany.

If it's any comfort, a lot of citizens of Strasbourg have said the same thing in alternating decades for the last two hundred years. The Alsace-Lorraine has been passed around like a drunk blonde at a frat party, every time there's a war in Europe.

Posted by: Qoheleth at December 11, 2018 03:49 PM (fD23g)

104 Ace, "Submachine gun" would indicate something on the lines of an Heckler and Koch MP5, in that it fires a pistol cartridge instead of a rifle cartridge, so the literal translation is probably correct. In this case, it's likely that they are in fact carrying MP5s chambered in 9mm.

Posted by: Bert G

Yep. MP5 is nearly ubiquitous in Euro CT outfits, GIGN included, though actual assault rifles aren't outside the possible.

My guess for "why" is that with 24x7 news and a broadcast every police chase mentality, there is now 'active' coverage of mass shootings --- they're on the scene before the event is (possibly) over, or at minimum on air and providing a play0by-play to viewers as it goes down.

248 Amazon Prime TV has a funny series called "Patriot," and in the new season, episode 2 or 3, there's a hilarious sequence on what it takes to get a gun in France. A black African shopkeeper keeps getting beaten and robbed by French thugs, each beating worse than the last. The joke is that by law, you need to live through 13 such beatings before you can apply for gun ownership.

On the occasion of his 13th, the almost-unconscious guy is on the floor in a puddle of his own blood, but with a grin on his face.

251 From the Telegraph:

The attack has prompted security warnings to tourists planning to visit markets this December.

Just days earlier, a 12-year-old boy was detained in Germany on suspicion of an attempted nail bomb attack at a traditional Christmas market on the orders of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil).

Reports suggested he had twice attempted to detonate a crude homemade bomb in his hometown of Ludwigshafen, in western Germany, planting the device at a Christmas market in a backpack.

When it failed to go off, prosecutors said he tried again a week later, planting the backpack outside the town hall. A passerby reported it and inside, police found a glass jar packed with nails and explosives.
