The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"He deserves the opportunity to stay in this country, he did make a mistake, but it is a mistake that can be paid with a fine," Reynalda Cruz

Quote II

This settlement is a huge win for the Berkeley College Republicans and really all student groups on campus. This is a huge win for the 1st Amendment, and I am proud of the work that the men and women of the Berkeley College Republicans have put in to achieve this victory." Matt Ronnau, President of the Berkeley College Republicans

Quote III

Equality is the chief faux virtue of our time. Our obsession with it brings to mind the great G.K. Chesterton’s observation, “The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of Conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being corrected.” Selwyn Duke

Quote IV

“Even as we witness devastating climate impacts causing havoc across the world, we are still not doing enough, nor moving fast enough, to prevent irreversible and catastrophic climate disruption,U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

Quote V

The left often says it wants to start conversations, but note that here, as always, the result of the conversation is pre-ordained. The left’s idea of a conversation is what the rest of us might call hectoring. John Hinderaker

If a Pro-Life Governor ignored the law. There would be holy hell to pay. Anti-gun governor can ignore the law and nothing happens.

In this country, and at every state level, we have three branches of government: The executive, the legislative, and the judicial.

These three branches are supposed to keep one another in check. There are mechanisms put in place to try to make sure that happens. We call these “checks and balances,” and it’s a big chunk of why our republic has survived as long as it has.

Now, you probably already know all this. You learned it in high school government class, if not before then.

Crickets, crickets and crickets.

Can we just call you Nags? It's shorter and moar descriptive.

I think it’s pronounced woh-mixen.

Or something.

Via Daily Mail.

University students are refusing to use the words ‘woman’ and ‘women’ because they have been deemed ‘offensive’ and include the word ‘man’.

Instead, members of the female sex are being referred to as ‘womxn’ by students at both Goldsmiths, University of London and Kings College London.

At Goldsmiths, the Students Union has ceased to use the words women and woman in its publications, since ‘womxn’ has been deemed more ‘inclusive’ of all students, including those who identify as transgender….

Rejection of the word ‘woman’ dates back to the Seventies when the word ‘womyn’ was adopted by feminists to delete the word ‘man’….

However, ‘womyn’ was controversial because it was seen as being associated with white, cisgender (a person whose gender identity matches their sex at birth) feminism.

Great marketing plan? Or great trolling?

How much would you pay for a pair of Payless shoes?

If you attended the beleaguered retailer’s recent Santa Monica event, the number is $600, according to Adweek.

The discount shoe chain occupied a former Armani store, called it “Palessi” and stocked it with heels, boots and sneakers onto which they slapped inflated price tags ranging from $200 to $640.

Their shoes normally fetch between $20 to $40.

They then invited group of influencers who collectively dropped $3,000 on Palessi shoes within a few hours and crowed about the shoes’ workmanship and style.

In one video, a man said, “I could tell it’s made with high-quality material,” while a female shopper called a heel “elegant and sophisticated.” She is then told that the shoes were actually from Payless. She falls silent for a moment and said, “You’ve got to be kidding.”

Those crazy Italians.

I've never met these "Kids" but I like them.

Stanford University fraternity Sigma Chi had a unique response to an administration official who said their American flag was “offensive, intimidating, aggressive or alienating.”

After receiving said criticism, the fraternity decided to hang a much bigger flag outside their house.

The story emerged from student newspaper “The Stanford Review,” which detailed an administration official — called “Mr. Z” in the report — advising a troubled fraternity last year on how to comply better with university policies

One more set back for Bird.

Bird is being sued for trespass in a class action complaint filed Nov. 30 by a property owner in Santa Monica, Calif.

John Lautemann is suing Bird for trespass and nuisance, alleging the dockless electric scooter company is harming property owners, “as e-scooters are flagrantly left on their property or in an unsafe manner on the sidewalks adjacent to their property.”

Social Media in a positive light. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

When news spread that Stanley C. Stoltz might be buried alone and without family, a crowd of more than 400 people arrived at Omaha National Cemetery.

The rally began with a funeral notice in the local newspaper. Good Shepherd Funeral Home director Mike Hoy said he was initially told that Stoltz had no living family when he died on Nov. 18.

The notice went viral on social media.

Irish Girl Tries shooting GUNS in AMERICA For the First Time

https://youtu.be/6_vkV53G3Gs

I've been following this cutie-pie for a while. She recently visited Texas. Trying USA fast-food blindfolded was funny. And sad. And funny.

But watching her visiting a shooting range, for her first time touching, much less first time firing, a firearm, is truly hilarious. Those who grew up with gunpowder will find her trepidations amusing, but give her credit, she shoots.

Fluffy fun. She discusses guns & Ireland (during the troubles), but her own circuit of experience is disarmed, even cops.

Her cameraman at the end looks like he enjoyed shooting much more than she did. "An AK? Helz, yeah."

100 Here is an excellent video explaining how the Falcon 9 first stage is supposed to land, and what went wrong today.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMIc4tZPBaA

The stage uses nitrogen gas thrusters for attitude control in space, then grid fins for steering when it reaches the atmosphere. A hydraulic failure rendered the grid fins inoperative, and the stage began spinning when it descended into the denser atmosphere. The thrusters fought the spin all the way down. Finally, the landing legs opened and cancelled out the spin seconds before touchdown, just as a figure skater slows her spin by extending her arms.

The stage landed gently on the ocean surface and toppled over without breaking up or exploding. It's floating now and they have boats around it and will try to tow it to port in the morning.

That was one hell of a good landing for a "failure".

Meanwhile, the Dragon spacecraft was successfully put into orbit and is heading towards the ISS. It's worth emphasizing that mission success is completely independent of first stage landing. SpaceX are the only ones in the world who even try to land the first stage. Everyone else simply discards it after separation.

Since life arose on our lovely rock, every effing Major Extinction Event has been caused by globalcooling from A) an asteroid strike placing shading aeresols into high orbit blocking the sun; or b) super large volcanic eruptions placing placing shading aerosols into high orbit blocking the sun; or c) effed up alignment of continents preventing global ocean circulation.

No evidence ever for an extinction from warming. Nada squat.

But it gets to be a page turner with the action.

He was a good first baseman as well as captain of the Yale baseball team in 1948. A tribute posted on the Yale baseball team's web page:

"In early 2015, as the Bulldogs prepared to celebrate their 150th season, Bush answered some questions about his time playing for Yale. When asked what advice he had for current and future Bulldogs, Bush summed up the philosophy that had served him throughout his remarkable life.

'I am not big on giving free advice for the simple reason that it's usually viewed as being worth what was paid for it,' he said. 'That said, I would encourage each and every young man who might attend Yale and play ball to do the same things my mother (Dorothy) taught me a million years ago: do your best, share credit, focus on the team. It's not fancy, but it worked for me.'"

You may be right, plus even before I heard about that catfight, I was just about ready to call or Tweet NBC on Monday (Tuesday? whatever day they flew him to DC) that someone needed to put a ballgag on Chuck Todd, because he was just ridiculous in his Trump bashing. It was downright distasteful. Andrea Mitchell was, too, but not quite as bad as Todd, my God.

371 We were visiting our daughter and her family in Utah. They live about 30 minutes from Bryce canyon and have lots of tourists pass through their tiny town. We were all at the shooting range when a couple from France pulled in. They watched for a while until my husband went over to talk to them. They wanted to know what we were doing, were amazed that we actually owned these firearms. They thought we were part of the military. He explained that we were private citizens and yes, we owned all of these firearms and enjoyed shooting. They really didn't understand at all.

Leningrad is an actual Russian rock band that has has real, high end directors and production companies make music videos for.

Most notable ones are Zozh (healty lifestyle), Siski (tits) and the most insane one that is shot back to front at a circus with horrible deaths that I can only link since I do neither Russian or cyrillic

383 I would NOT like to see a Lancaster making a pass 'tween the Tower Bridge uprights.

There are not enough of them in airworthy condition to risk the stunt, and the wingspan is long enough as to require an absolutely perfect approach and fly-through.

You might think that it's 270 ft. span would be plenty for the passage, compared to a Lancaster's 102 ft. wingspan.

And that's about a half a wingspan's margin of error on either side...easily devoured by an errant gust of wind.

But a Mosquito making the same pass?

That would be poetry in motion.

Less so a V-1 Buzz Bomb. Kinda an unwelcome memory in the neighborhood, that.

Mosquito would be the Warbird of my fevered warbird ownership dreams (lottery dreams).

Fast, maneuverable, gorgeous, and able to carry two other friends on board, when configured for co pilot and flight mechanic/rear gunner.

And the bomb-bay can carry pods for everyone's luggage.

Now, let's see. Few HUNDRED gallons of 101 octane avgas at what...eight bucks a gallon?

Merlin engines with oil capacities in gallons, not quarts, and a warm-up oil burn rate that'd do a Cummins Diesel proud.

Not to mention maintenance and overhaul intervals...

Truly, a millionaire's toy, to say the least.

And yes, I'd sully the "authenticity" by having some modern, glass-panel components installed.

No need to grope about blindly, without the benefit of modern electronics to do the groping for you, up there.

407 Oh hell, I should just quote the whole thing:

Heard of a van that is loaded with weapons
Packed up and ready to go
Heard of some grave sites, out by the highway
A place where nobody knows
The sound of gunfire, off in the distance
I'm getting used to it now
Lived in a brownstone, lived in a ghetto
I've lived all over this town

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
This ain't no fooling around
No time for dancing, or lovey dovey
I ain't got time for that now

Transmit the message, to the receiver
Hope for an answer some day
I got three passports, a couple of visas
You don't even know my real name
High on a hillside, the trucks are loading
Everything's ready to roll
I sleep in the daytime, I work in the nighttime
I might not ever get home

This ain't no party, this ain't no disco
This ain't no fooling around
This ain't no Mudd Club, or C. B. G. B.
I ain't got time for that now

Heard about Houston? Heard about Detroit?
Heard about Pittsburgh, P. A.?
You oughta know not to stand by the window
Somebody see you up there
I got some groceries, some peanut butter
To last a couple of days
But I ain't got no speakers, ain't got no headphones
Ain't got no records to play

Why stay in college? Why go to night school?
Gonna be different this time
Can't write a letter, can't send a postcard,
I can't write nothing at all
This ain't no party, this ain't no disco,
This ain't no fooling around
I'd like to kiss you, I'd love you hold you
I ain't got no time for that now

Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock
we blended with the crowd
We got computer, we're tapping phone lines
I know that ain't allowed
We dress like students, we dress like housewives
or in a suit and a tie
I changed my hairstyle, so many times now
I don't know what I look like!
You make me shiver, I feel so tender
We make a pretty good team
Don't get exhausted, I'll do some driving
you ought to get some sleep
Get you instructions, follow directions
Then you should change your address
Maybe tomorrow, maybe the next day
whatever you think is best
Burned all my notebooks, what good are
Notebooks? They won't help me survive
My chest is aching, burns like a furnace
The burning keeps me alive
Try to stay healthy, physical fitness
Don't want to catch no disease
Try to be careful, don't take no chances
You better watch what you say

Hawaii has ultra -strict gun control, and the loophole the gun clubs use is that you 'join' the club with the initiation fee, and pay for training on the 'range' which is a large upstairs room, and the gun is held in a vice-like apparatus which can only be pointed down range at the target.

Barely qualifies as shooting a gun, but compared to Japan, where you never even see guns...

First they release the mess that is Fallout 76.

Then it's found out that their $200 collector's edition which was supposed to include pretty decent canvas bag had it replaced by a cheap nylon bag, without informing the buyers before sending them out and then having a tone deaf response.

Now they've just leaked the personal information including addresses phone numbers and credit card numbers of those purchasers of that collector's edition.

something similar with the citibikes in nyc, everyone was outraged that there were not any racks in the hood. bike company said "no reason just have not got there yet."

hurried and installed lots of bikes and racks and they were all gone shortly there after.

they had something similar to the yellow bike program but they all disappeared. curiously, lots of bikes of the same make and model started showing in different colors.

Posted by: junior at December 06, 2018 12:19 AM (Fp6vo)

I remember in the run up to release, they mentioned that private servers would be available after release and they made sure their own servers were stable.

Considering what I have seen on the state of the game at launch, may be a bit of a wait.

538 Rolling Rock used to be really a drinkable beer when it was brewed in Latrobe, PA. They were sold to Anheiser Busch and moved operations to St. Louis. I bought a 6 pack of it a few years ago and it was horrid. I never finished it. Threw it out. It was like they figured out how to ferment squirrel shit.

"From the glass-lined tanks of Old Latrobe we tender this beer to you..."

I went to a school where it was nigh on madatory to know three or four theories for why the number 33 was on the label. It was a fine, fine beer.

There was a bar where you could buy a case of ponies (7 oz. bottles) for $5. Renting an opener was 50 cents extra.

The swill from Anheuser-Busch is an abomination.

Never like Miller High Life. Always thought Michelob was overpriced. I've had Molson Export in Montreal, which was quite good. Alexander Keith's India Pale in Scotia was really good. Quilmes in Buenos Aires wasn't bad, either. Both Molson and Quilmes came in either a regular 12-oz. bottle or one of those 22-oz. 'Grande' bottles. Now, when I have a beer at home it's only Beck's Dark. Out and about, I'll have a pint of Guinness; can't stand Guinness in the bottle or the (oil) can.

587 Don't actually follow it in the "news", but the bikes and scooters (electrified) thing seems to be leading, finally, to backlash/limits/changes in SoCal.

In a country and culture smothered under so many idiotic restrictions and regulations because of the Shakedown Industry (the liability industry), it amazed/amazes me to see this stuff.

Nephew was very lucky to just have major cuts and bruises to one side of his face after doing an almost "over the handlebars" thing when he hit a hole in the street just before T-giving (at night). Several other direct personal stories of major injuries on scooters.

Kind of obvious. Standing on these things is like standing on the hood of a car, if something goes wrong. Oops. You fly into the pavement/obstacles at your present speed. Duh. Since even in America's least obese city, half the people seem fat, and very unathletic, and quite stupid in a practical sense, it's a miracle there haven't been many deaths. But I still don't understand how the pernicious Shakedown Industry hasn't shut down the scooters, if not the bikes.

626 539 And my understanding is that unlike many of the other survival genre games, you *have* to play Fallout 76 on the official servers.
Posted by: junior at December 06, 2018 12:19 AM (Fp6vo)

I remember in the run up to release, they mentioned that private servers would be available after release and they made sure their own servers were stable.

Considering what I have seen on the state of the game at launch, may be a bit of a wait.

I have loved every Fallout property for 20 years, and they managed to make me go 'Ehhh, I am going to wait on the reviews...'

Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at December 06, 2018 12:26 AM (pfCu1)

That is what you call a lie. They are holding off on private servers for at least a year so if you want extra stuff beyond the base you have to buy it through their in game store through microtransactions, you know rather than through people creating them in mods.

I saw the another comment about the non-encrypted connection. I saw a couple things on that when it was first brought up but there doesn't seem to be much of an issue there and it may have been a case of someone having a little information and thinking it was a lot. If that was an issue there would be "Don't buy this game because you could get hacked," instead of the "Don't buy this game because it's crap."

yes and no.

first off, in the desert, at night, with no moon or artificial light, you can start seeing that sort of thing pretty quick.

secondly, back before the DOD *finally* s*bered up and started buying fixed head spaced and timed 50 cals, changing the barrel on one was a time consuming PITA, and might get you killed IRL, if you were hard pressed.

hence the practice of pouring 30 weight oil on the barrel, and other "one neat tricks"

So you ended up being the problem.

At that time I was heavily involved in the banking consulting industry, mainly helping out Savings & Loans. Typically, a consultant would approach an S&L exec and say "For $8M we can get you $12M" so that is like $4M from home, and we were printing money. Worked 80 hour weeks but had more money than God.

And then the tax hikes killed the mortgage industry and 41 set up the RTC which issued out a statement such as "If anyone uses a banking consultant we will consider that a confession that you are on the brink of insolvency and we will shut you down".

Our business literally ended overnight.

So Bush père killed the S&L industry.

Self-Identifying can come in handy.

We were visiting a relative in the hospital the other day.
Two person limit for guests, and as two groups of visitors overlapped, we had five folk there when the nurse showed up.

When the Nurse commented about how small the room was for the number of people there, I told her that I self-identified as 'not there'.

She actually laughed, in a good natured way, and went on about what she was doing, with no other comments, and the two of us leaving shortly after that.
