This is what is now to be expected from these folks.
We've come a long way from the time when a corporation's highest and best purpose was to manufacture a product that the buying public wants, and to return a profit to its shareholders. Now that the progressives have succeeded in using terms like Corporate Social Responsibility to force them to act like real flesh-and-blood citizens and not just legal ones, we'll get more and more of this.
What's worse, these tech giants are performing many of the functions in the public square that were once only the purview of governments, and they use their private corporation status to evade First Amendment requirements - unless they themselves want to speak, of course.
It's going to get worse.

Yeah, I'm pretty locked into the Apple ecosystem (used Apple products since 1984), but there are still things you can do.
For example, I am in the prime income/nerd demographic to buy an Apple Watch - won't do it, because of Apple's policies.
I don't replace Apple gear unless it breaks, and I no longer get the top-of-the-line stuff. Don't use Apple Pay, Apple Music, etc. Bottom line - Apple gets probably half the revenue per year from me that it used to.

Actually, it is a Mach BSD kernel that Apple freely borrowed from-and unlike linux, the BSD folks are perfectly fine with that. FYI-Linux is a whole different kernel architecture.

I first got involved in the Mac world around the beige G3 time. The particular model I have straddles the new and old worlds, so no one has ever figured out how to reliably boot a non-MacOS operating system on them. When I had Linux running on it, I had to boot into MacOS and from there into Linux.
I have a Mac Mini that I dearly love, which replaced my old Mac Mini that the world left behind. The old Mac Mini is the model that has a 64-bit processor, but 32-bit UEFI, so you have to play all kinds of non-obvious games to get Linux installed on it. Haven't yet bothered to figure out the magic (I have three Raspberry Pis of various vintages lying around, you see...).

They did it by clever marketing and being willing to take huge losses. They gave away apple products to schools and Movie/TV guys. Free. Just handed them Apples. And then they had a really clever CEO who while not being innovative, was great at deciding what people would consider "cool" and want to be associated with, and he pushed the company toward those products.
He also had an eye for what would NOT be cool and avoided those, like the watch which was blocked until Jobs died.
However, since he's been gone the company has gotten dumber and dumber, and without his guidance as to what is cool, they're just busy making their products... thinner.

Check out the "The rEFInd Boot Manager" . I used it to boot linux on an older Mac-Mini (2010 vintage). It might be what you need for your older machines.

Completely and totally unreported on - they have pretty much susended Prime right now. Since the week before Thanksgiving I have been getting delivery dates 4-11 days out.
5 years ago I was able to order mid-December and get a 2 day Prime Order within 24 hours.

Ubuntu linux or Linux mint is probably a good option for beginners. The command line is available but not emphasized in those distributions. PC-BSD was the equivalent for the BSD world.

I've been using Apple products since I worked for a Bay Area company many moons ago that standardized on them. They work great, never had a virus and it save me the crazy Microsoft "improvements".

My biggest issue with the new iPhones is not Tim Cook's political views, it's that you just don't get THAT MUCH for the price.
The Pixel 3 just blows the iPhone X out of the water, spec wise for a slightly lower price. Even the Pixel 2, at a much lower price, seems like a better phone.
And Android has come a long way since my last Android tablet. So... I might switch over. At least for now.

Yeah, early 90s it was clear that Apple lost the PC war to Microsoft. Apple's management pre-Jobs wasn't willing to concede though. So I do admire Jobs for being willing to admit the obvious, that Wintel was what won the day and continued frontal attacks were going to ruin Apple.
Instead Jobs changed the rules. I don't know how much stock he placed in Moore's Law, but I do think he took Gates' "computer on every desk" and likely foresaw that it could turn into "computer in every pocket" and invented a new category of devices, namely the iPod. That really turned Apple around and started the halo effect that introduced people to Apple products, I think. Combined with the new iMac that had color in the case, this changed the game and left Microsoft floundering. In fact, I don't think Microsoft ever really had a vision that extended past where they were in the 90s.
Jobs did a good job turning Apple around and reinventing the company as well as the market. I don't see Cook with the same kind of vision execution chops that Jobs had.

I'd say fully half would support deplatforming everyone to the right of the Jeff Flake, and the other half would offer token resistance to the idea but still end up going along with it because they see the benefits outweighing the negatives.

Plus when I got my first iPhone it was that or another blackberry. And I had nothing but issues with blackberrys and their stupid tracking balls.
But I'm not married to iPhones. A lot of the advantages and innovations are pretty much gone now, Android is a more robust operating system, and there are some great Android phones out there.

I had one. Clunky, hard to use, and it sucked. My iPod was much better, both design wise and ease of use. Not at all complicated, just the click wheel, and it was trivial to get stuff on there.
It really was a big deal. Microsoft thought otherwise and tried to catch up with the Zune, but quickly learned that they were missing the boat on the new normal.

You know, I had an issue like this with Prime last spring, the last time I made a major purchase that I needed by a certain deadline. My then-girlfriend was going to a baby shower and ordered the gift for it on Monday. Shower was on Saturday.
Thing didn't show up by Friday night, I got on the phone and got super pissy, they ended up giving me a free year of Prime and a $10 credit on my account (the cost difference to buy the thing at the store, IIRC.)
I was really surprised. I've had my Amazon account since high school -- maybe 2004 or so. Pre-prime.
Never had an issue like that until now. And the Amazon customer service people were wayyy shittier then they were in 2012 or so when I had a package stolen from my door. Instead of some nice Pacific Northwestern chick who was all "oh my god, I can totally help you with that! I'm so sorry! Let me overnight you a replacement!" I got some indian dude who was reading from a script.

Zune was actually a better product (more features) but it wasn't cool, it wasn't packaged right. It felt like a Microsoft product. And they gave up on it too soon, like if it didn't crush Apple it sucked and had to be ended.

Completely and totally unreported on - they have pretty much
susended Prime right now. Since the week before Thanksgiving I have
been getting delivery dates 4-11 days out.
5 years ago I was able to order mid-December and get a 2 day Prime Order within 24 hours.

I had one Amazon delivery, that I chose their "free" option they offered, said 4-5 days to deliver, and it got here in 8 days. Second order did get here the next day, no Prime, but I also know their giant warehouse is about 7 miles away from me and the second order was processed there.
Amazon is trying to be America's infrastructure for capitalism. A single, non-binary supplier. Without any competition, because they can operate at a loss until the competition is bankrupt (see: BOOKS).

The Apple Store keeps a list of all the music you have bought. When you get a new device, just log in to the apple store with that username/password and all of your music library is immediately available to you on your new device.

But I'm not married to iPhones. A lot of the advantages and

There used to be some solid custom ROMs that you could load onto your Android and get away from Google. You had to unlock your phone and could risk bricking it. I ran one for a while and loved it.

There are various GUI system config things, but the command line is still there and fully functional. Indeed, boot the thing to the non-GUI run level, and you've got full character mode. Nothing but terminals.
And, with the virtual terminals (Alt-Fkeys, you can switch out of the GUI and go to an independent terminal).

I just looked it up. "Info" is GNU's baby -- they started in the '90s as a man replacement. But every system is a mishmash of man and info stuff, apparently.
Info used Texinfo, while man uses the traditional Troff. That's why info formatted shit doesn't work in man. Well, it can be readable sometimes, but a lot of stuff is missing.

was amazing. It just worked with everything. It put everything on my PC, and vice versa. It talked with my iPad. It talked with my car, and I could voice to text on it. Can you believe in 2018 the iPhone can't talk to text on Bluetooth (or have the car read your text to you)? In-fucking-credible. iTunes is right out of the stone age. If I have a photo I took on my camera and it's on the PC, I need to email it to myself and then save it. Same going the other way. Apple hates the OneDrive.

I hate touchscreens with a passion. They're fine for small devices where you aren't going to be using a mouse or keyboard, but on larger devices touchscreens are awful crap. I can't tell you how many times I just tried pointing at something on a screen only to have everything go to shit because it was a "touch".
I've never owned one so I don't know if the owners just refused to turn off the touch part when it was unneeded but having a computer that reacts to both touch and has a mouse/keyboard at the same time is just idiotic.

It all goes back to a Pope delegating authority to ecumenical councils and a latter Pope rescinding this authority without calling a ecumenical council to do so. it honestly strikes me as less of a theological fight and more of a political one. The Catholic Church would have similar struggles with multiple claimants, and the Ecumenical Patriarch today is having trouble because he recognized an independent Ukrainian church. Russia is the center of Orthodoxy and has been for a good while, which is why the other autocephalous patriarchates are backing them. The two churches differ but more so in rites than practice. There are actually eastern rite churches in communion with Rome on that note.

My takeaway from that was I think Jobs both had a freakish degree of OCD about things that we touch, but that it served him very, very well in product design.
Like maybe there was something a little broken in Jobs that made him hyper about the interface, but that was in large part his genius.

Another Linux this I'm enjoying playing with is "WSL", Windows Subsystem for Linux, introduced with Windows 10. The put a subsytem in that can run native Linux ELF binaries.
You've to Ubuntu, Suse, and some others. They keep promising Fedora for WSL, but no joy yet -- some dispute.
On the downside, though, I'm suspicious that MS is trying to take over Linux.

Along with many long-gone brands like Sol, I mainly considered two.
One was Radio Shack, a simple system from a solid company that was packaged kind-of commercially.
The other was some hackeronious system named after a fruit, the only advantage of which seemed to be graphics, which weren't of much interest to me in that low-res era.
The fruit, of course, is now one of the major companies while Shack scuttled every pre-PC advantage they had and disappeared.
However, having chosen in that day to go with TRS-DOS, I was set on a course that led to MS-DOS, and Windows, and until now that's been my choice.
Never regretted the fruity path not taken. Well, sometimes those years when I couldn't get video to work on Windows. But, mostly, not.

al the reviews have been lukewarm - better in some regards (screen and battery), worse in others (keyboard). but my beef is they but in a fan. the reason i liked the "air" is because it's solid state and silent.
so i don't know what to do. apple's computers and laptops were the industry leaders but no more. computers only comprise some 10% of apple's business today, so maybe it's not the priority it once was.

I had an mp3 player AFTER the iPod came out, because a) I hated the Apple hype machine, and b) my dvd player with anti-skip still worked and the early iPods were hard drives and there was a questions as to whether they could handle jogging.
I got one of the early flash-drive MP3s. It was great.
Then I got the iPod Nano: The iPod was revolutionary at the time.
The design, OS, and iTunes were amazing... at the time. In 2004. Unfortunately, outside of the psychotic need to repeat the Apple closed-system loopiness of the late 80s and 90s, not much has changed.
Their laptops are great, but holding China's feet to the fire is gonna burn their bottom line.
I love Apple products, but this has been a long time coming. They should have invested in products instead of DC favors and Chinese slave labor.
AAPL is trading at a 14 P/E for crying out loud. That's practically utility territory. If revenues start to slip - they are in big heap trouble.

It was over priced and quirky but that seemed to endear it to their customers who turned it into a hate campaign against the PC. These days it's super easy, barely an inconvenience to install. I recommend Linux Mint MATE edition. Search for a tutorial on how to download and install that... The installer auto detexts your hardware and just does the right thing.
You can customize Mint to work as you like but out of the box it works similar to Windows XP with some elements borrowed from Mac OS X. You can customize it and make it look fancy if you want.
If you are buying a new laptop I recommend any Lenovo ThinkPad. Especially a T-series. A T-series with Linux Mint MATE will be similar to a MacBook... easy to use and you own it. Neither Apple nor Microsoft will be able to push any software onto your laptop.
A few years ago the idea that Microsoft might push software onto your computer that spies on you would have been tinfoil hat laughable, but no more. Microsoft has Windows phone home with anonymous (I hope) data on what you do. So far I don't think they have done anything really evil with this capability but they have it. Why let them have it?
