Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Global Warming Alert: "Mini Ice Age" on the WayWinter is coming.Humanity is facing a long, cold winter which could see temperatures across the planet plunge to depressing lows. That's the warning from a Nasa scientist who fears sunspot activity on the surface of our star has dropped so low that it could herald the arrival of a uniquely grim mini Ice Age. 'We see a cooling trend,' Martin Mlynczak of Nasa's Langley Research Center told Space Weather. 'High above Earth’s surface, near the edge of space, our atmosphere is losing heat energy. 'If current trends continue, it could soon set a Space Age record for cold.'I forget who said it (apologies), but one of the greatest bits of snark ever written on this blog went something like this: "If only there were some... external factor that could account for the variations in global temperature. Such a hypothetical external factor would have to be very large, though -- on the order of magnitude of our own Sun." Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Wasn't this warned about several years ago? We could be in store for some seriously frigid temperatures for the next bunch of years.
Holy shit last winter here was so cold I almost gave up my nightly walking. One night set the all time record for cold (It got down to -20 or -25 in the middle of the night). I went out when it was only around -12. It was like that all winter, not quite that cold but the coldest I could remember. One look at the Vostok Ice Core data (which the Global Warming nuts always loved) is enough to tell you everything you need to know about the Earth and our climate. There is a clear climate period of about 100,000 years and we are currently at the unstable peak of the latest one. The next move is down. WAY DOWN. Over the next thousand(s) of years. I wish Global Warming were true, because we friggin need it!

What I have to ask, though, is how fucking stupid did the left need to be in order to buy in so much to the anthropic global warming scam. And make no mistake, it is a scam - a very calculated, deliberate scam. Dozens of high profile researchers were in on it and cooperated with various lefty orgs to make it into dogma. There was also a major paper claiming that we are underestimating the rise in the oceans by like 70% that got all kinds of press.
Some other scientist read through it and found a major error on the first page. The authors of the paper retracted it (to their credit) but as someone noted, if you said the paper was wrong the day before they retracted, you were a denier. Interestingly, the lefties identified the exact same cause for that as they do for Global Warming - burning fossil fuels. Funny how that works. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at November 16, 2018 04:14 PM (KEr/t) They had the same remedies, too: Higher taxes and more government control of the economy. Posted by: rickl Bingo! I wrote a DEVATSTING post about this: https://pjmedia.com/zombie/2012/01/31/ the-coming-of-the-new-ice-age- end-of-the-global-warming-era/?singlepage=true "I just finished reading a terrifying new book about climate change. I learned this: • Climate change is happening faster than we realize and it will have catastrophic consequences for mankind. • There's very little we can do to stop it at this late stage, but we might be able to save ourselves if we immediately take these necessary and drastic steps: - Increase our reliance on alternative energy sources and stop using so much oil and other carbon-based fuels; - Adopt energy-efficient practices in all aspects of our lives, however inconvenient; - Impose punitive taxes on inefficient or polluting activities to discourage them; - Funnel large sums of money from developed nations like the U.S. to Third World nations; - In general embrace all environmental causes. You of course recognize these as the solutions most often recommended to ameliorate the looming crisis of Global Warming. But there's a little glitch in my narrative. Because although the book I read was indeed about climate change, it wasn't about Global Warming at all; it was instead about "The Coming of the New Ice Age," and it isn't exactly "new" — it was published in 1977. The Solution Remains the Same As many other pundits and analysts have pointed out, in the mid-to-late 1970s we endured a massive "climate change scare" that was the exact opposite of the one we're enduring now. Back then, the media and activists trumpeted the arrival of a new ice age, with the specter of ice sheets and glaciers covering half the northern hemisphere, and brutal winters in the remaining ice-free zones. The fact that the media and popular culture and academia have veered from one panic-inducing disaster scenario to another one which completely contradicts the first one is funny enough in its own right. But reading The Weather Conspiracy: The Coming of the New Ice Age opened my eyes to an even more significant aspect of this serial crisis-mongering: The "solutions" prescribed to solve both Global Warming and the looming Ice Age are exactly the same. In both cases, proponents of the theory-du-jour say that in order to stave off disaster, we must reverse the march of civilization, stop our profligate use of carbon-based fuels, cede power and money from the First World to the Third World, and wherever possible revert to a Luddite pre-industrial lifestyle. I realized: The solution (commit civilizational suicide) always remains the same; all that differs are the wildly divergent purported "crises" proffered up to justify the imposition of the solution." The sequels all sucked since the tension with the BHPD was gone and that wa a driving force in the original. Plus, Lisa Eilbacher was a major cutie. 63 I was told on the news the other day that scientists *just* discovered the ozone layer is "repairing itself" because we stopped using hairspray 30 years ago. They are utterly shameless.
Posted by: ... at November 16, 2018 04:13 PM (uEbPt) Gotta respectfully disagree. That could be entirely legitimate. Ozone depletion from chlorofluorocarbons was entirely plausible scientifically, as the photolysis of CFCs does lead to chlorine atoms in the laboratory, and chlorine atoms do catalyze the decomposition of ozone to oxygen molecules, again in the laboratory. The crucial word in the above sentence is "catalyze." Unlike global warming through the greenhouse effect of CO2, which presumably would be stoichiometric (meaning that a doubling of CO2 partial pressure would double the effect), even a small partial pressure of Cl atoms could have that effect. (Think dropping a lit match into gasoline; there's no point in dropping TWO such matches.) So the science behind concerns about the ozone layer was entirely plausible. Similarly, with the reduction in use of CFCs, if the resultant partial pressure of Cl atoms were low enough, the ozone layer could regenerate faster than its catalytic decomposition (ozone results from UV photolysis of O2 in the upper atmosphere). So I wouldn't ding scientists for this one. Everything they said is plausible and reasonable. Now the question is quantitative: how MUCH effect did CFCs have then, and now, and is it enough to account for the difference? I have no idea. Just go to Wiki and look up "Ice Age".
The natural state of the earth is actually to be in an ice age. For about 20K years we've been in a slightly warmer "interglacial period" in the middle of the 4th great ice age that we know of. Yes, you read that correctly. Technically we are in the middle of one, but just in a slightly warmer period. Not coincidently, this slightly warmer period perfectly tracks the rise of organized civilization, agriculture and language development. Time for a New Space Race to see if we can finally get off this frozen rock before we all freeze our nuts off!! Posted by: Sharkman at November 16, 2018 04:26 PM (BfOXk) 220

Writing a very physically distinct character does make the movie hard to cast. The Monster Hunter books would be very hard to make just from the required special effects needed. The fact that the title charter is a six foot six, three hundred pound mixed race math genius might be a challenge to find. Guess it is a good thing that the author is a 2nd amendment supporter so his books will likely never be made in to movies. Posted by: Big V at November 16, 2018 04:29 PM (CGfsq) 244

When I first got my ham license some years ago I could make 1,000 mile SSB contacts on 6 meters, QRP, with a dipole literally tacked to the ceiling on our second floor. It wasn't an every day thing but not too uncommon. Been a long time since that happened.
Ham radio operators have been talking about lack of sunspots for 20 years and speculating about the Maunder Minimum. But there wasn't grant money for universities in our observations. Posted by: JTB at November 16, 2018 04:34 PM (758Rh) 291

At the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry there's a whole giant exhibit showing how glaciers have melted since the 80s. The whole thing is romanticized... like we're supposed to miss the fucking ice. They actually have a great, giant piece of ice in the exhibit that you can touch and watch it slowly melting.
Anyway: 1) I'm not a glacierologist, but I assume that these things have been melting for 10,000 years. There's nothing special about the state they were in in 1980. Were no adults available to tell this to the children who made the exhibit? 2) And didn't the site of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry used to be under a mile and a half of ice? Why aren't we romanticizing *that* glacier? Posted by: Geronimo Stilton at November 16, 2018 05:05 PM (0JUQP) 529

I think the climatologists have proved one thing scientifically:
that climate is too complex a phenomenon for them to analyze with any degree of certainty. They are like a bunch of monkeys trying to reverse engineer an operating system by typing randomly on the keyboard. The backpedaling they do is amazing. Admit nothing. Always double down. - first the icecaps would be gone within a few years. Then, after getting their ships stuck in the ice a few times, they admit the icecaps are expanding, but because the melting ice caused elevations to collapse, thus broadening the area. - then ... within a few years we will have NO winters. Then end of snow. Then they admit, well yes, winters ARE getting colder, but that's because it's getting so warm at the poles that it weakened the polar vortex and allowed the cold air to escape, mumble, mumble... - lately they've been making all sorts of vague, usually incorrect claims and insinuating it leads to global warming. Worldwide decreases in insects and vertebrates by 40%(!), loss of crops, hurricanes, tornadoes, sunken Hawaiian atolls, flooding in Venice, etc. Most of it chicken little nonsense. At the end of the article, an astronomer says that even if we have a mini ice age, it won't stop global warming. Funny how that works, eh? Posted by: CATMguy at November 16, 2018 05:49 PM (VGhw8) 666
The ratio of natural forces vs the effect of human activity is enormous. I'm not a climate change denier. Climate has been changing ever since the earth was a slightly higher density region in the swirling dust cloud around our proto-sun. The magnitude of the signal of natural forces pretty much makes the noise of human action almost entirely invisible.
And, if you're talking about dealing with global warming, global cooling, or any other modestly gradual change, capitalism is the best. I mean, the amount of money it would take for the government to make the temperature go up or down by 1 degree would be far, far more than what it would take for individuals to move 1 mile inland because flooding has become a bit too common. Best of all, you don't need to raise taxes for people to seek more favorable environments for themselves. Usually these things are caused by Indonesian
volcanos erupting. Tambora, Krakatoa, etc. -- every few hundred years, one of the those Indonesian motherfuckers blows its top and sends upmty-ump gazillion gigatons of ash into the atmosphere, and blocks to sun's ray around the world for a year or two, caused global starvation. Standard operating procedure historically. I'm quite sure some Indonesian volcano erupted in 571, with no one around to "document" it. Posted by: zombie at November 16, 2018 04:40 PM (c+2jX) Saw a documentary years ago about the Krakatoa eruption circa 500-600 A.D.. It made the 1800 one look like a popped pimple. "If only there were some... external factor that could account for the variations in global temperature. Such a hypothetical external factor would have to be very large, though -- on the order of magnitude of our own Sun."
And in order to warm the Earth throughout the year, it would have to be located somewhere very near the center of the Solar system. But 97% of Hollywood astrologers point out the flaw in this right-wing conspiracy theory: that this is where the Sun is already located, so it would be impossible for such an influence to be located there, you knuckle-draggers! If you look on wattsupwiththat, the worlds largest climate website, you will see multiple threads about this sort of thing. On those threads, an actual solar scientist has shown (multiple times) that the sun has repeatedly gone through extended quiet and active phases, and the Earths temperatures have not changed in phase, or even near in phase, with that. The Earth seems to ignore what the sunspots are doing.
If the sunspots caused temperature difference, we would see regular swings in temperature every 11 years, when the sun increases or decreases activity, at the very least. We do not. The only possible place where there might be any correlation was during the "mini ice age", when the sun was quiet multiple times and at length, as in over 100 years all told, or more. So, wait 100 years, maybe something will happen. Meanwhile, about actual ice ages, which DO happen, it depends on the Earths "progression" around the sun, how it is tilted relative to the sun. It is now tilted for cooling and ice age, expected any time in the next 3000 years. So, we need to avoid this, drive a bigger car. Posted by: SanityClause at November 16, 2018 09:54 PM (CwACU) 678

Overlay a graph of the sun's output and surface temps. They map.
I liken it to early spring temps. In the sun you take your jacket off. Step into the shade and it's burr. Kinda like solar energy...... Posted by: H1 at November 19, 2018 11:17 AM (C1s0h) Processing 0.07, elapsed 0.0789 seconds. |
