Of course Lorenzo is magnificent. He's paying for this. He's probably a badass who slew all those demons.

The one thing I do find surprising is that Vasari took this picture while Lorenzo was rearranging his junk. I mean, we all do it but is that what we want in the picture?

72 I need to learn more about this painting, especially the meanings of the background materials. (And yeah, I thought of a Bob Hope nose right off.)

This is not as brightly colored as many of Giorgio Vasari's works. It would be interesting to learn what his palette was for this one. Also, it feels much more modern than 16th century works with that ethereal and almost grotesque background. Fascinating.

I should translate the Latin, which probably has meaning for the scene.

Quite possible. Nicky was no great fan of the Medici (when they overthrew the Florentine Republic and arrested Machiavelli, they tortured him rather nastily, via the strappado).

A few years later, he wrote The Prince, addressed to Lorenzo, basically as an attempt to get a job. I always thought it was smart of the Medici to decline, as I'm fairly certain that Nicky was still pissed off and looking to get even.

It's also unAmerican.

We're supposed to have citizen politicians, who can go back to living their lives after time in government.

A blanket tax like that goes against the idea of a citizen driven government.

Of course, that's not what we actually have, but any effort to curb people like that would hit the actual citizen politicians hardest and the people like the Obama's the least because they'd find a way around it.

The death occurred when a driver "panicked" and ran over someone after arriving at a blockade for an undeclared protest not far from the city of Lyon, Louis Laugier, the prefect of the Savoie region, said at a news conference.

A further 227 people were injured -- six severely -- in protests across the country, and 73 people were taken into police custody, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. Five police officers suffered slight injuries, and one was severely injured. Another five gendarmes were hurt as well.

I would like to believe it's still not too late and that we aren't permanently overrun yet. I hope the silly lefty white women can be cured of this naive, suicidal belief of "we always need MOAR diversity!" even if that means we are permanently outnumbered and outvoted.

People are so dumb. They watch a few tv commercials or movies promoting diversity and it changes their whole aesthetic and they are too unreflective to be aware of it or to question it. Maybe the reality clue bat will do it.

And touches on issues of pay inequality and racism under a backdrop of a rising Fascist dictator who wrestled control of the government with the help of a foreign power.

He added he would love to talk to the president about what he believes is needed in the AG position.

====
That one is in my collection of Renaissance works. It's good, and JamesMadison's book might make a good companion volume.

At a remove of six centuries the subject matter is distressingly familiar to an up-to-date follower of our national news. The princes of Renaissance Italy, sunken in vice and ambition, turned their homeland into a battlefield for their own pleasure and gratification. Their grandchildren labored for Austria and Spain, and feared the approach of French armies. And the common people of Italy had them as a role model. No wonder malice sharpened Machiavelli's pen as he beheld his home town of Florence stripped of its republican government and made the toy of a dynasty that cared more for its own goals than the welfare of its city.

Example: In Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid has Etta Place at gunpoint, forcing her to strip. We think we're about to watch a rape here. Suddenly Etta whispers, "Just once I wish you'd be on time!" And without any more explanation than that, everything has changed from Rape to Consensual Game-Playing Sex.

He used it in his novels and his screenplays both. Never did he overdo it; the two times he used it in Marathon Man were perfect. But it was a kind of trademark.

I need to go back and reread Boys and Girls Together.

371 I'm a Latin teacher. The top right Latin, VIRTVTVM OMNIVM VAS - 'virtutum omnium vas' in modern spelling - means "the vessel of all the virtues". VAS can mean 'vessel' as in blood vessel or 'vas deferens', i.e. a tube, but mainly means vessel as in jug, vase (etymologically related), pitcher, urn, etc., like the one the Latin is written on.It looks like the tube sticking out of the eye-socket of the mask to the left of the VAS is for pouring virtues into the skull. I'm guessing that means you mostly learn virtues by reading good books. I think there are some philosophical proverbs about how the eye is better than the ear, because reading (the Bible, or the classics, obviously, not porn or politicians' autobiographies) makes you better, while listening to people around you (the only people you can listen to, since the authors of the good books are dead) mostly makes you worse, because, on the average, people are bad and say bad things. The bottom right Latin, VITIA VIRTVTI SVBIACENT - 'vitia virtuti subiacent' in modern spelling - means "the vices lie under virtue". Virtue is singular now, and 'lie under' implies the vices have been beaten down, subdued, crushed. I assume the ugly face between the two inscriptions is one of the vices. Are we to imagine there's a whole box of vices, the rest hidding behind the man?Still plenty of questions about the iconography, but the Latin is clear enough - unless there's some smaller inscription I've missed.

372 Don't know why all my paragraphs were run into one. Should be clear enough anyway.

I have a sincere request. Could you translate "If you're going to be dumb, you've got to be tough" for me, please? I'm making a present for a dear friend and would love to include it somehow.

My joking suggestion (don't actually use this) would be:

Forto ut non intelligam

376 I seem to remember that he was a total cad, as he appears to be in this portrait.

He especially was hostile to either his wife or daughter....I don't remember, I'm sorry to say.

377 Sorry, Warai-otoko, that is not good Latin. This should do: 'Si stultus eris, fortis esse debebis'. Literally, that's "If you will be stupid" of "If you will be a fool" (same form for adjective and noun), "you will ought to be strong/brave/tough". The literal translation sounds awkward because for some reason, "ought" doesn't have a past or future in English, so we say 'you ought to have done x' where a Roman says "you oughted to do x' and we say 'you ought to do x' (present) even if we're talking about a future obligation, where a Roman says 'you will ought to do x'. Be sure to change 'stultus' to 'stulta' if you're addressing a woman. The masculine 'stultus' works for addressing a man or any generic person who may turn out to be of either gender.
