Angela Merkle Supports Macron's Idea to Raise a European Army to Fight The United States

Okay.

Good-bye.

You do you, guys. We're bringing our troops home.

She suggested that the EU needs their own standing army so they can be well defended against possible aggression. She was supporting Macron's recent comments where he said Europe needed protection from, "China, Russia and even the United States of America."

When you've got the Brits standing up and yelling "rubbish" at you, you've really touched a nerve.

12 Ok. If we'd have wanted Europe we could have annexed a huge chunk of 80 or so years ago. They were actually kind of worth something back then.
Now? If we wanted to drag our economy down that much we could just annex Mexico and most of Central America and logistics would be much simpler.
I think this is just them making a wish because they know they've screwed up and are going to need American blood and treasure to bail their worthless asses out. . .again.

100 There is quite a neo-nationalist movement going on in parts of Western Europe.

What Merkel and Macron are saying is political fodder to fight back against "the far right!" that is apparently behind this political upheavel.

So they are trying to appear as Soi-boi tough guys, and pushing back against Trumpenfuhrer and the thugs from Amerikkka.

Regardless, I am personally tired of this weak charade.

We really should pull out of NATO and bring our stuff back to the US. We are just ending a big excercise in the North Atlantic to posture our defense of the Baltic States being annexed again by Uncle Ivan.

It would be too bad, for those people.

But really, I don't care. The rest of Europe doesn't seem to be able to muster the will to resist, so why should we do the heavy lifting?

The best part is tat currently, they can't hope to defend Europe from a direct threat to Europe.

According to macaroon, multiple threats are envisioned. To deal with those requires the ability to project power.

The British realized in 1982 that they had so thoroughly atrophied, that the RN was simply an AWS force; it scrambled together the force that went, with predictable results.

You are wildly off-base. This might be the case fighting against, say, an EU nation that hasn't taken their military preparations seriously for a couple of generations. But China or Russia have the means to wreck us, domestically, without conventional military capability even entering into it. Our infrastructure is absurdly vulnerable.

And China, perhaps alone out of all nations, has the industrial base and production capacity to actually support their military as-fielded for an extended period of time. Sure, we can try giving them the old 8th Air Force treatment, but they can do it right back without dropping a single bomb.
We're what you would term a glass cannon, now. Sweden's military has been gutted over the last 25 years, they couldn't hold any territory if they are attacked. Several years ago Russian planes were flying over Sweden and they couldn't do anything about it because it was after 5pm and Sweden's air force was closed for the day.

What Sweden does is, you guessed it, rely on NATO (see United States) to protect them under the umbrella of "western Europe".

This would be painful for about a year to 18 months but they would return ownership of their country to their countrymen instead of German/Dutch bankers.

The crappy quality of the Chinese industrial base is either made up for by massive quantity, or by the fact that we lack an equivalent capability *at all*.
Shit, look at aircraft production. For several decades our fighter production has relied on a couple of pieces of massive equipment that were built right after WW2. We don't even have the capability of building more of the damn things; if they crap out, we are literally incapable of producing any of our modern fighter aircraft.

The Chinese have equipment that builds equipment that builds equipment that we don't even have, which is used to build shit that builds our equipment. The situation is not funny at all.

They're a paper tiger with a bic lighter, while we've spent 30 years dousing ourselves with gas. We're a lot more vulnerable than they are.

We need and want a world-class conventional capability, but this is veering off into the old "preparing to fight the last war" problem. China doesn't need to project conventional power to attack us.
- We no longer enjoy the benefits of geographical isolation we had during the last world war; we've made our infrastructure vulnerable to remote attack
- We still have a commanding lead in the ability to transport troops and materiel, but it's also at a fraction of our capacity at the height of the cold war. This blunts the threat of us delivering a sustained conventional ground campaign
- We're not even remotely capable of sustaining wartime production like we did in the last world war. This is a massive failure of civilian and military leadership.

406 IIRC, the EU announced the formation of a brigade or two of joint military units in the '90s, after the collapse of the USSR. The idea never went anywhere.

The idea that Merkel could participate in such an announcement with a straight face just screams parody or farce. After all, it was the Bundeswehr that recently had reports about ridiculously low rates of vehicles and equipment that were actually ready for use. The UK is the only one of the major European powers that actually meets its NATO obligations as a percentage of GDP (it's the third highest spender under that requirement; oddly, financially screwed up *Greece* is the second highest after the US). France, which actually has a decent military (it gets used a lot assisting former colonies fighting against "guerillas" from the Religion of Peace in wars that you never hear about in the media), checks in at number 7, at just under 1.8 percent of GDP.

For the curious, the others in the top ten are Estonia at number 4, Poland at number 5, Romania at number 6 (with 1.8, which puts them just a sliver above France; I could have sworn that they used to be a lot lower, which suggests that they've bumped up their spending recently; or alternately, my memory could be bad). France, as mentioned earlier is at 7. Latvia is at 8, Lithuania at 9, and Norway is at 10.

Germany is clear down at 17, with 1.24 percent of GDP.

Of course, Eastern Europe would go berserk if the US pulled out of Europe. And the spending of some of those countries suggests that. Despite their weaker economies, five of the top ten spenders as percentage of GDP are in Eastern Europe (including all three of the Baltic States). Unfortunately, the rest of Eastern Europe appears to be abusing the assistance of the US. Despite the belligerence of the current leader of Hungary, the Hungarians, Czechs, and Slovakians are all pretty low on the list. They're only beating out Iceland (which doesn't have a military), Luxembourg (which is a speed bump, and knows it), Belgium (iirc, they had unionized troops during the Yugoslavia mess), and Spain (which is about as safe as a European country can get). Those three nations need to start acting more like they have a big nasty eastern neighbor that would swallow them up given an opportunity.

Every day, in my town, at 6:30 in the morning (I'm buying my coffee headed to work) a tour bus stops and the Chinese touristas get out, take pictures of the front gate of out local university for a few minutes, get back on and head to Philly. Pretty good laugh to start the day.

I'm not worried at all about Chinese manufacturing capabilities. Taiwan is their source of manufacturing know-how and Hong Kong is their banking source. The Mainland is just a lot of people trying to get work. American manufacturers are leaps and bounds better managed and more productive, just in my limited experience. They have cheap labor and stolen know how.

This leaves out of the equation what brainwashing can do.

European and American middle class parents are glad to have their daughters murdered by shit people, because they've been conditioned to believe that they deserve that. I expect Chinese parents have likewise been conditioned to cheer on the slaughter of their kids as long as it's for a cause they've been indoctrinated to believe. People have very little resilience when it comes to rejecting bogus ideas. See the article on today's EMT about Austria vs Germany (Vienna not waving the EU flag).

469 Had a go-around with a NeverTrump-ish friend some time back about NATO. He was gung-ho on Article V and said we would be required to go to war if Russia invades the Baltic States. He got upset when I explained that what he thinks of as NATO doesn't exist, we don't have the forces in Europe to do a job like that, and that people might turn out to be less than enthusiastic about getting into a shooting war in which nuclear destruction of US cities might be on the table all so we can kick the Russians out of Latvia. No offense to Latvians. I'm sure it's a fine country.

People like my friend don't understand that it's not like it was. There is no more Fifth Corps. There is no more British Army of the Rhine.

The major threat is internal, with these now uber-rich oligarchs intent on importing a "new people" so they can keep using slaves of our enemies for personal profit (as well as the DC pay-to-play systems that bailed out billionaires and kneecapped real productivity and development).

China has massive problems, but have developed their trade infrastructure and are building lines of trade globally, buying mining and other resources around the globe. Our "freeTrade" globalists loved abusing their slaves and being able to pollute freely, in direct competition with American producers that fund clean air, workers comp, and all levels of welfare"

We need to think AmericaFirst ... which the globalists have thwarted since the 80's.

Enough to get through the defensive perimeter, and then to have a few actually hit a moving carrier, and then you have to do enough damage to sink it, which is difficult considering that they're built to remain afloat even while damaged.

And remember that you still have to locate the carrier, set up your launch site, and launch, while avoiding US drones and aircraft and surface craft hunting for you.

519 As a general rule a country doesn't field more than 5% of its population as a standing army, let alone in one place. 10% is a high end for a settled country.

Regarding arab troop quality, if you define warriors as bandits and raiders, yes they have a warrior culture that makes their fighting capabilities weak. If by warrior you mean a lifelong career soldiery in the fashion of knights and early aristocracy for some countries, then no. Seasonal raiding cultures tend to make for poor soldiers.

The chinese, if sensible are not hoping to reach us. They merely hope to field a strong enough airforce and navy to prevent the US from wrecking their infrastructure, which is disproportionately coastal. China has difficulty feeding its population and bombing their road networks would rapidly lead to mass starvation. If they are secure from us, they can invade their neighbors.

529 @519 Seasonal raiding cultures tend to make for poor soldiers.
-------------------

With one notable series of exceptions. The raiders that used to periodically emerge from central Asia were downright scary. The Mongolians were the last, but they weren't the first.

530 Sounds like calls for a European Army are mostly a dodge to get out of their commitments to pay their part for NATO.

531 One thing most people leave out of their calculations is the ability of populations to absorb losses. Asian countries are fatalistic and able to look past huge casualties as just part of life. Europe does too but to a much smaller degree.

Our country is unable to do so today. There were howls of outrage at compartively small casualty rates in Iraq and Afghanistan.

So our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines can fight perfectly, our equipment perform magnificently, and yet our weak point is the home front. And that is a massive flaw in a large scale war.

532 @520 A Chinese sub would have to get close enough to fire torpedoes or missiles, and that's a long-shot at best.
------------------

Several years ago I remember reading stories about belated discoveries of Chinese subs in spots that they weren't supposed to be in, and where we definitely didn't expect that they could get (in relation to our carrier groups).

you are thinking of asian cultures of old, none of the big three, especially, china have that perspective on the loss of their sons anymore.

That's what I'm trying to say.
China - 1.3 billion people. Lose 300 million people that still leaves them with 1 billion people with, now, 300 million LESS mouths to feed.

Do you really think China cares? These are the people that will shoot you in the head and bill your family for the bullet.

Talk about "how many" you want to, but you have to think about how well the crew is, especially with damage control. US carriers are heavily armored in the areas that matter, also.

536 The Germans, fiendish bastards that they are, should invade France by marching in backwards. The French will believe they're leaving and go back to eating cheese and drinking wine and whatever else they do when they're not stabbing America in the back.

Doubt we'll see a continent full of Tiger Woods. Chinese men are not going to co-mingle with black women in a family structure sense.

Far more likely to see the return of slavery.

I haven't looked lately but I think Polish GDP per person is something like 3x Russian. Are you sure about living standards?

Beyond
living standards, Russians have plenty of other problems too,
population decline, too much territory for coherent government,
alcoholism beyond imagination.

The Poles, by contrast are doing very well socially and economically.

Posted by: Huck Follywood, AntiDemfa (anti-Demofascist) at November 14, 2018 02:31 PM (LISuA)
Polish GDP per capita is less than 2x higher than Russia's now (and the gap should be even smaller, since the ruble is currently undervalued by around 15% due to sanctions). Adjusted for PPP, they are about the same.
Poland's demographic problems are much worse than Russia's. The Russian fertility rate is currently about 1.7 children per woman (up from less than 1.2 in 1999), while Poland's is about 1.3. And alcoholism has declined enormously in Russia, part of the reason that since 2005, Russian life expectancy has increased from 65 to an all-time high of 72.

543 This story is not unlike the one below about Soros-funded faux conservative hos: the Euros are our faux allies as long as we fund them. The Germans literally teach kids the American bases are social welfare programs.

Cut them off. Russia has just as much to fear from Europe as they from it. Let those mothers sort it out.

I said they are on their way to colonizing, not that they have.

They are doing their best to do so though:

So, up to the life expectancy of a Englishman in 1960. Well done. I applaud their advancement from the Somalia like numbers at the turn of the century.
