No sales tax going to the state, dispensaries allowed near schools, you can legally drive while under the effects of weed if you have a doctor's note. Actually, that's one place I could almost see Trump bending. He's not remotely a budget hawk, he's politically smart enough to know that his base is scared by health insurance/healthcare costs.
The whole thing with healthcare is whose ox are you going to gore? Our current structure is just about the worst of all possible worlds, but fixing it involves moving the flow of money around, and telling anesthesiologists to give up their third vacation house and taking away pharma's right to plunder the US market while selling in the rest of the world for peanuts is difficult.

Trump is scattering booby-traps around for the democrats to step on. He's talking about bipartisan negotiations and working together knowing that the democrats can't stop hating and trashing him and the country. He'll provoke them into temper tantrums while appearing to be reasonable.
It's why the press is so hostile. They know what he is doing. One of the worst insults you can say about a politician in public is to call him 'your best friend' in front of the cameras when the two of you are engaged in a blood feud.
That's why Trump is saying how reasonable and responsible Pelosi is and how she was just saying last night how they could work together in a bipartisan fashion. Trump knows she doesn't mean it, and Pelosi knows Trump knows she doesn't mean it, so when Trump stands there in front of the camera and tells the press corp how he and Nancy can work together to find solutions to these problems, for the good of the country, it drives the press and the democrats crazy. They can't help themselves.

Don't know where you get your info but Pharma doesn't "plunder the US market". The US market happens to have the most ridiculous rules regarding Approval and studies that spikes costs here. I know, I work in that business. Fix the FDA approval process and you will see lower costs.

I agree in principle, and I'd argue for a broader acceptance of approvals issued by other countries with decent rigor.
However, if the US opened up reimportation and set US reimbursement prices at world levels, you'd see massive pressure by pharma to level prices. It would not be a perfect result, but it would be a cleaner situation than what we have now.

Party out of power almost always picks up seats in mid-terms. GOP retired 40-45 incumbents, losing major incumbency advantage. GOP was defending 19 districts that Killary won. Very tough House map.
Sean Davis put it best: NeverTrump GOP voters knifed NeverTrump GOP politicians.
Ace, was right on that call. But the margins in so many districts were much tighter than I thought. Although I was hopeful based on early vote that GOP would keep the house. Dems had to win 23 for majority. They got 26. Much closer and certainly no fucking "wave" nonsense.
Bottom result: Senate majority cemented pretty hard (come on MT!!!) and the cucks have been purged in large part. House can wail and go crazy, as is their wont, whilst Cocaine Mitch is now hand and glove with Trump and will ram through any cabinet member he wants and all judges. THE SENATE WAS THE BALLGAME FOLKS and with a +4, or hopefully +5 result, whilst not the very best scenario we were all hoping for, that is still very very good.

That is the problem. Other countries - almost all of which have socialized medicine - tell the pharmas "this is the price you get, and if you don't agree then we'll break your patents and produce it ourselves." That is a big problem, and the US has done nothing about it. Intellectual property is real, and while I do want to see the reimportation ban lifted, you make a good point on the nature of price-controlled other countries. The way they accomplish those controls is often flatly illegal and we should be using our trade policies to counter it. If a country violates our intellectual property then they should be embargoed.

The problem is that a number of countries buy drugs through their national agencies, and do so on essentially a cost-plus basis. Their leverage is that if pharma doesn't play ball with them, in extremis they can revoke patent coverage in that country, and make the stuff themselves. (As e.g., India has done.)
For this reason, the U.S. is half of the world pharmaceutical market in terms of returns, which is why they fight for market share here. Essentially the other wealthy countries are free riders on sick Americans for their pharmaceuticals (much like their approach to defense).

The US still leads the world in new drug research. I work on projects all across the globe and while there's plenty going on in APAC and the EU... it still pales in comparison to the research being done at US Investigational Sites (doctor's offices).
Essentially the US market pays for the capital to invest into new drug development and research. It's a shitty deal, but its one that has been granted upon us by the rest of the world.

Always has been. US coal (depending on region) is pretty high in thorium and it gets chucked into the air as exhaust because it doesn't burn. My dad was doing a minor nuclear cleanup about 25 years ago and figuring out how successful they were was a real bitch because there was a coal-fired plant about a mile away - really screwed up their radiation readings depending on prevailing wind. We should be putting pressure on those countries for those price controls. They are shifting costs they should be sharing, as they benefit the same as any other consumer, solely onto Americans.
Allowing imports from those markets does indirectly pressure those countries as the manufacturers would start lobbying to ease those controls.

This is something I am not very clear on, so maybe a moron can help me out. Who owns the press conference? Is it a press event or a White House event? I think it is a WH event, which means that the White House gets to call the shots, right? It's their party? If so, then when a question gets rejected or conversation ended, isn't it done on the White House's prerogative?
If my understanding is correct, the Acosta was out of bounds for not surrendering the microphone when he was told to and when the White House staffer tried to retrieve it to move on to a different "journalist."
If it were my party, he'd have been bounced.

There is, as I see it, three key points:
a) What person A doesn't pay, person B does. This is true in all kinds of corners of healthcare, whether it's the Brit NHS subsidized by US pharma buyers, or the Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance game in the US of large group plan members vs Medicare/federal vs the uninsured, etc.
b) Big Health plays all kinds of games in their pricing, I'd love to see an audit of some major hospital chain over their 'rack rates' and how much they write down for uninsured/underinsured and how much of that shows up as a bad-debt tax loss.
c) If you want to take money out of the system, you are going to be hurting some people and they are going to scream. 1- Refuse to answer or even acknowledge their continued comments or questions.
2- Notify them that they will not be called on or acknowledged for as many following press meetings commensurate to the number of comments or questions they asked after the POTUS had moved on to another person.
3- Anyone who refuses to surrender the microphone will not be allowed to hold or touch the microphone in the next press meeting and will be seated at the back of the room for any future meetings.
4- Anyone who touches or disparages a WH worker will be expelled immediately by security and charges considered.
Any continued breaches of decorum will result in being blocked from all future press meetings.
