Gun Thread: I Heart This Rifle - [Weasel]

Elmer_Fudd 2.png
E. Fudd and his Favorite Wabbit Wifle

IMG_5449 scaled.jpg
1999 Springfield Armory, Inc. M1A 'Loaded' Model

I have to admit I think this may be my favorite rifle. I just like everything about it. It's well balanced, fun to shoot, fun to look at, sort of fun to clean (not really), and makes it seem like I know what I'm doing on a rifle range. Pointy end downrange, right?

The M1A is the semi-automatic civilian version of the M14. Chambered in .308 Winchester or 7.62x51mm NATO, the fully automatic M14 was introduced as a replacement for the M1 Garand beginning in 1959, and served as the U.S. battle rifle until the arrival of the M16 around 1964. The M14 continues to be used by specialized units to this day.

In 1974, Springfield Armory, Inc., a private corporation headquartered in Genesco, IL., began production of the M1A. Offering several different models with an array of features; the M1A remains popular with competitive shooters, marksmen, hunters and sportsmen alike. The M1A 'Loaded' model pictured above includes as standard a number of match grade components including a National Match barrel, NM front and rear sights and two stage military trigger. Although not standard on the Loaded model, this particular rifle has a custom bedding job and was very clearly someone's well cared for match rifle. Although I haven't done any scientific measuring, with decent ammo off a bench I think this is probably very close to a 1.5 MOA rifle. Did I mention it was fun to shoot?

So do you have a favorite rifle, and if so, why? There are a lot of good reasons, I suppose; favorite caliber, smells good, pleasant hunting or range memory - any number of things. Which rifle would you never consider selling?

Reloading Bench
While very small physical and pressure differences do exist, .308 Winchester and 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition are interchangeable, with the .308 Win developing slightly higher pressure. Over the years, the military has produced M80 Ball, M118 Match and M852 NATO Match ammunition to varying degrees of accuracy. Unfortunately, military loads are often driven by the economics of component cost and availability, with absolute accuracy sometimes becoming a secondary consideration. Whether you're shooting surplus, commercial or handloaded ammunition, to start out look for a bullet weight in the 168 - 175gr range, and a muzzle velocity around 2600 fps. The 168s will perform well inside about 700 yards while the 175s are effective beyond 1000 yds. If you're considerng a custom rifle, most long range .308 competitors are using bullet weights of 200gr and above with very high ballistic coefficients. Bullets weighing less than 168gr are effective at reduced distances.

***This Old Gun***

tactical cup holder scaled.jpg
Finally, Common Sense Cup Control

This week's Old Gun is neither old nor a gun. It's more of an accessory. Actually it is an accessory. And just in time for the holidays!! I suspect the unsigned note and photo is from a tactical bitter clinger who didn't appreciate my derisive comments regarding AR-15 attachments a few weeks ago. This, however, is quite useful and should be on everyone's wish list!

The Tactical Bitter Clinger writes:

I have attached pictures of my AR-15 tacticool quick-detach cup holder. It is mounted on my first AR-15 build a CA-compliant rifle for my daughter who lives there. I am torn between naming it Moonflower (because California) and Diana (it is Cerakoted burnt bronze, similar color as Wonder Woman's armor).

Thanks Tactical Bitter Clinger! I'm a convert to the world of AR-15 accessories!!

Please note the new and improved gmail account MoronGunThread for sending in stories and pictures. Thanks for your patience and please let me know if you have any more trouble (with the email). Again, that's morongunthread at gmail dot com. If you care to share the story of your favorite firearm, send a picture with your nic and tell us what you sadly lost in the tragic canoe accident. That makes sense for 30-06 since the 7.62Nato was intended to near enough replicate the 30-06 ballistics.

25 Dad got a SA M1A years back and on the first range trip, got a case-head sep that required a gunsmith to remove the casing from the chamber. Second time out, the receiver wedged itself shut and couldn't be cycled.

I REALLY want to love that rifle, but I am very hesitant. Did they have a bad run a few years ago or was it just a one-off? FWIW I have never heard of any other issues with it. It was with bog-standard ammo too, I don't remember exactly what but nothing exotic or old or overpowered.

Posted by: hogmartin at November 04, 2018 07:08 PM (mS+Df)

I have no love for the AR-15, so those can go. The various Remington 700s with bull barrels chambered in anything starting with a '3', there are better rifles now. The AR-10T... yep, too heavy and fires the outdated 7.62. Even better bullpups than the Tavor X95. (e.g. Desertech MDR). Even the SOCOM II dressed up as a Juggernaught bullpup.

I'm not really sure if a space would make much difference. I'm really only guessing though. I think single bales were used as backstops at the farm where I used to train, but they were all well beyond 1000yds from the firing point.

I have a couple ARs but only got em when they were trying to outlaw them. Really don't care for them much and prefer 7.62's

73 we were at the local over-priced/rip off toy store (they cheat people on used gun values, telling them collector's items are junk, then sell for top dollar) when i saw a loaded SA M1A.

they wanted ~$1600 for it, IIRC.

next to it was another M1A type, in some funky "Hollywood" type camo stock.

MFG was "AR Sales South El Monte CA"

i literally groveled on the floor to get Resident Evil to buy it, earning me many disdaining looks from the yutes and their GFs, until she said "Oh get up!"

i then looked at them and said "hey, i get the rifle." as we walked off to do the transaction. yes: when it comes to firearms acquisition i AM shameless.

turns out there were only a very few made, and we paid dirt for it.

went into the *good* toy store after picking it up, and they looked at it, said "wow, what did you pay for this?"

upon being told, the response was "i hate you"

99 The M16, after adjustments for Nam early failures, is a reliable weapon for both close in and long range.

Whaaa ...? Long range? No way. Our guys are getting peppered in Stan and Iraq cause a 7.62×54mmR will *accurately* reach 1000 yds. It's a standard deployment. To get that range outta M4 you've got to tilt it up mortar style, and then it's sub-lethal as well as subsonic. (slight exaggeration alert!)

The platform's OK, especially as it's so common and lots of folks are used to it. But there are much, much better munitions.

I was showing it at a gun show and another seller asked if it was for sale. I told him stupid money would take it. He offered stupid money ++. I threw it at him before he could change his mind. No regrets.

Short answer: no.

Understand the entire methodology of the Left. They do not accept your views as valid if they disagree. Instead of listening to our opinions, they tell you where you are wrong, and what you will think instead.

Compare today's Left with the Liberals of a generation ago. Liberals would disagree with you, but still support a conversation about issues. With the Left, you and I are either Lemmings who follow what they say without question, or we are evil and must be silenced. There is no middle ground with them.

there has been a call for a conversion to 270 since the 1930's. I am not sure why, but the Garand, and the FN-FAL and a British rifle were supposed to be brought out in that caliber. Ya know, before WWII loomed.

MacArthur nixed the conversion for the Garand, the others I am not sure of.

The 6.5 Creedmore is supposed to be a lovely cartridge with both long range accuracy and low kick that fits in an AR platform.

Florida 2016 Early voting stats

Dems 1,580,000

Repubs 1,425,000

Democrats out voted republicans by 155,000 or repubs down 2.1% in early voting

Trump won the state on election day.

Florida early voting 2018 as of Nov 4, 2018

988,0000 republicans

1,025,000 democrats

Democrats so far 37,000 ahead or repubs down 2.0% or down less than 2016 in early voting.

So far, that's close BUT .10% BETTER than 2016 when Patriots won Florida for our GPOTUSE.

121 I have two rifles I will never sell. One is a Garand that came from CMP with NOS stock and barrel. It is essentially a new rifle. Wish I could shoot well enough to wring out all its accuracy. I will keep trying to be worthy.

The top, though, is a custom 50 caliber flintlock made to fit me: 42 inch swamped barrel, LOP for my height, top of the line lock, full length stock, and designed to look like it was made in 1790. It has my preferred flat butt stock and balances like a dream. It was a retirement gift from Mrs. JTB.

129 Quibble with the post for safety. The 7.62 chamber, being full-auto and designed to use a variety of NATO country ammo of differing manufacture tolerances, is cut for higher tolerance. The 7.62 brass is thicker to account for this. 308 uses thinner wall brass and combined with a 7.62 chamber on the large end can be trouble. I believe all us milspec chambers are cut to .308 spec; however my beater m14SA has a 7.62 chamber that just swallows a 308 field. I only feed that one 7.62.

I am in Savannah on vacation, so no range trip this week.

BUT I did buy a new (to me) Gen 3 Glock 17. Now I can swap slides and lowers between it and my Glock 19's to my heart's content. Eat your heart out, 19x and G45. Plus it's Tennifer-coated as all Glocks should be.

Favorite rifle may be a bit surprising, it's my Kel-Tec SU-16 C. I own several (ahem) AR 15s of various sizes and calibers. But the SU-16 is the lightest and more than accurate at ranges I will be shooting. Did I mention it's lightweight? It is. It's my designated 'wife' gun, along with my M1 carbine.

Point taken, but I've personally never seen pressure signs resulting from the mix. I think as a practical matter most people are using them interchangeably, but a really, really loose chamber could cause pressure signs with a stout 308 load.

156 Will never sell my JM Marlin 1894 cowboy spec 357/38.
Accurate as f***.
20 inch barrel in heavy/octogan balances perfectly, very handy, but maintains just enough weight forward to be very naturally steady. Negligible recoil and could drop a deer or BG quite effectively.

Was sighting in its 30-30 bigger brother today at a God-awful range in my suburban locale, run by the County. Basically wait in line like the DMV for 2-3 rounds of administration until you get the Golden Ticket to go down to the range, where they herd you into groups, wait, wait, wait for the civil servant to change the targets, then an hour of BENCH SHOOTING ONLY.

Necessary evil to be able to sight in a rifle (Skinner Express peep with a custom front that is actually a POS that I will replace with a factory fine bead). Chased groups by adjusting the rear peep windage. Since its all the way down I can't really do anything about shooting high except different ammo choices and accepting a six o'clock hold.

Sort of ultimately to get groups slightly right-hand sided within the black (4-5" circle) with 170 grain Federal (100 yards).

My favorite shooting remains offhand with the 357 carbine (yeeha!) at around 50 yards for practical accuracy. That is what I do (with everything else) at my paradise range in the Adirondacks. There, you can show up with whatever, so long as it's not alcohol on the premises, and have at it outdoors up to 200 yards, hang your own targets etc.

A) Ejector replaced, no other issues.

B) Replaced trigger safety and trigger spring, adjusted slide. No other problems found.

C) Replaced extractor, extractor spring, rear sight, rear sight screw, trigger bar, trigger safety, ejector, firing pin, sear.

Guess the problem child, now practically a new gun.

183 BTW law enforcement can dring the anti-2A as deeply as anyone. Do not trust them to disobey confiscatory laws.

At the Crap County range today a range officer (LE badged) was complaining to a bunch of young dudes asking about pistol permits about how "The New County Executive" (Democrat) no longer gives "Sportsmen's permits" (slightly less restrictive about carry away from the range) because some guys who got them "ruined it for everyone else" because they got Sportsmen's permits but didn't really hunt or hike.

Young dudes were nodding their heads: "Yeah, some guys ruin it for everyone else!"

I wanted to ask him whether some fat cop who sits behind a desk all day eating donuts and filling out forms but has a Glock strapped to his hip is also "ruining it for everyone else" but I just wanted to go shooting.

Is that ever a great question! There is a lot more going on in DA, and the tendency is to anticipate the shot. I know that I still find myself doing it sometimes. Lots and lots of shooting is one answer, but I will tell you that I mentally rehearse the shot first and COMMAND myself not to anticipate the shot which seems to help me a little.

232 205 195 So i need a little coaching here.

Got my S&W .357 a couple weeks ago. Ran a couple hundred rounds of .38 through and seems to do well. Single action better than double of course.

Then I tried a few rounds of .357. Once again, single action accurate and controlled. Double action, however was a bit overwhelming.

I want to be solid and confident. How do I train more for the .357 double action other than just shooting a shitload of rounds? Any specific muscle memory drills?

Is that ever a great question! There is a lot more going on in DA, and the tendency is to anticipate the shot. I know that I still find myself doing it sometimes. Lots and lots of shooting is one answer, but I will tell you that I mentally rehearse the shot first and COMMAND myself not to anticipate the shot which seems to help me a little.

259 WA has a ballot measure that while doesn't ban AR-15 makes it a lot harder to get one. And also classifies all semi-auto rifles as "assault weapons". Among the things the ballot measure will do
- have to be 21 to buy
- 10 day wait period
- must take a safety course prior to buying
- $25 tax

This applies only to "assault weapons". And then for all guns, if you have a minor in the house, guns have to be locked up. If the minor gets access to a gun, the parent/guardian will be liable for any crimes committed by he minor with the gun.

And it will pass easily, probably get 65% of the vote.

I am by no means an expert but I have to be slow and deliberate when firing DA. Part of that is I have big hands and have to concentrate on trigger finger placement. Then really take my time applying pressure. Gradually, I build up speed.

Two things I've found. I have to repeat the process often to retain whatever skills I've developed. Mine don't last forever. Also, I had to learn that I can't fire powerful rounds as quickly, with accuracy, as milder loads. I'm faster with 38 or 44 specials compared to 357 or 44 magnums.

308 For urban rabbit hunting, I found a good air rifle option. Many jurisdictions let you shoot air rifles inside city limits as it is not a "firearm." My city adds a "can't display any scary black replica gun where visible to the street" type rule that applies even to pellet guns.

I use a Gammo Swarm Maxxim, which is manual break barrel powered, with a 10 shot revolving cartridge for .22 pellets, with enough power to drop a rabbit in one shot. It's suppressed so it won't annoy neighbors. Plus the 10 shot option ensures you can get multiple rabbits in one go, with follow up execution shots as quickly and humanely as possible. They also have a stronger Magnum variant, for $300 versus $180.

The NRA sued to keep this measure off the

supremes would overturn 2+2=4 if a Democrat asked them to.

So I wouldn't be too hard to the NRA on this one. They tried.

321 I don't think I've ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of my daughter as I just did a moment ago.

I sat down with her on the sofa and (as calmly as I could) tried to explain to her why trolls think it's okay to micturate down their own legs in Weasel's lovely gun thread. I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult - the rage and feelings of helplessness were just too much. She could tell something was wrong. I found myself at such a loss for words - nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, "I just don't know - I don't know what's going on in this country anymore..."

When I finished her lower lip started to tremble and her eyes began to fill with tears, "Mommy" she said, "why are trolls doing this to the thread?" Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. I just fell into her arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes. She had to comfort me and get me back on my feet. Sometimes I just think it's too much, but seeing the strength in my daughter's voice helped me to get through.

I'm late with this, and I hope you're still around.

A great aid for this is snap caps. Put one in the cylinder with 5 live rounds. Spin it, and close it up without looking. (You probably already know this, but don't flick your wrist to flip the cylinder closed like in the movies. It's really bad for the crane.)
Anyway, shoot the cylinder. At some point, you'll land on the snap cap. This will point out if you are anticipating too much, plus it will really get you used to the trigger.

Remember, this is a very fungible skill. DA revolver shooting takes a lot of practice. I'm still not worth a shit like I should be.

**you can also do 2 or 3 snap caps, if you're a masochist like that....

Posted by: LGoPs at November 04, 2018 08:36 PM (ziurx)
-----
I think perhaps what Grump was referring to was the point of impact if the bullet path did not arc, but continued on a straight line from the muzzle. Depending on the load, 38 MOA is in the right neighborhood for .308 elevation at 1000 yds.
Posted by: Weasel at November 04, 2018 08:43 PM (MVjcR)

IIRC, most commercial ballistic firing table data is shown with a 100 yd zero. Bullet drop is distance below point of aim at various ranges.

Military firing tables have a ton more data. Basically, it is set up with various superelevation angles (bore axis angle with respect to horizontal. You get max ordinate, range to impact, angle of drop, and height above horizontal at various ranges.

Had to use those to calculate impact area when crews shot outside range limits a few times. To get superelevation angle, you have to measure it on the barrel with a quadrant sight. Ballistic ded reckoning.

The fun part was going out to see if you could actually find the impact point.

Maybe ... I don't think it's that though. At least not exclusively. I think RCP averages polls then stares and chicken entrails (endorsements, which campaign manager can convince them that "momentum is on their side," ad spending, etc.) to make their determination.

In other words: Not fucking science.

I dunno, anyhing is possible. For Reps to keep the house it has ot be about D3 or lower. So D8 to D3....that's a lot of polling real estate to overcome.

And before anyone says yeah but look at Trump polls in 2016...I don't think any state Trump won had him losing by more than 5 points, 2 days before election day.

377 My prediction is which ever side wins the house, the margin of victory will be less than 10. It's going to be a 220-215ish house.

Posted by: Lurking Lurker at November 04, 2018 09:19 PM (suxaw)

378 364 3 generic polls today are D7, D8, D9. That's pretty fucking high. In 2016 polls narrowed to basically a tie by the weekend before election day. Can polls really be THAT off? I dunno, anyhing is possible. For Reps to keep the house it has ot be about D3 or lower. So D8 to D3....that's a lot of polling real estate to overcome.

And before anyone says yeah but look at Trump polls in 2016...I don't think any state Trump won had him losing by more than 5 points, 2 days before election day.
Posted by: Lurking Lurker at November 04, 2018 09:15 PM (suxaw)

a) nationwide polls dont matter for individual house races

b) yes -- the polls are almost always uniformly inaccurate. The biggest voodoo in the polling word is adjustments for demographics, and guesses on turn out models. All polls are assuming a higher D turnout in the midterms than usual since the D base is so pumped up and the R base is not. That may or may not end up being true. But if their assumptions are off by a 1 or 2 percentage points (or more) in turn out (which they will be), then their numbers in every close race get thrown way off.

Look at 2012 -- not a single polling outfit was correct in their turn out models. No one (and I mean no one) thought black turn out in 2012 would be higher than it was in 2008.

Thus every poll was wrong. Some got lucky and still guessed a sort of correct outcome.

409 Rassmussen, D=+3 today. There is something called the ecological fallacy--that what is true for one level of analysis is true for a lower level of analysis. E.g. National and district. Sometimes this is true, sometimes not. Generally bad economic times or wars move things but neither is present.

Second, early voting in many states dampens trends in those states.

For predicting House races, with scanty polls in many, people like RCP are trying to use the past to predict the future. A lot of people are assuming that the sheer amount of money that ACT Blue showered on Dems will win those close races.

Third, believe it or not rain on election day in some places does tend to hinder Democrat turnout.

Last, people keep forgetting about independents. I don't think that too many nationwide polling folks have a great grip on who will vote on Tuesday in specific states and districts. Samples of 300-500 in a CD is basically garbage in close races as the error margin is too large.

What it depends upon is the GOTV for the remaining votes in early voting states and imperative in states that do not have it. GOTV is worth about 5 pct points on average for a candidate.

The funny thing is that "rifle" is actually a contraction of "rifle-barreled gun." That is what you will find in old documents. I think that "rifle" is etmologically linked to "ripple" and "riffle," so technically a "rifle" should indicate one of the grooves making up the rifling in the barrel.

So, despite what the Corp may think, they are both guns....

___

Having taken enough stats myself I kinda agree.

My beef is finding people to poll. Area code portability has made the phone poll model unworkable. Which is why (and I know I'm a broken record with this) national polls in 2016 were on the money, but state polls weren't. Ask 1000 people in the US randomly who will you vote for and you can derive the overall national vote.

But try finding 1000 people in PA or MI. Do you call 1000 Michigan area codes? Good luck since 250 of them live out of Michigan. And then laughably try polling a CD in an urban area that has 5 area codes in the CD and each area code is part of 5 other CDs. It's literally imposible to get a good sample of people. And then on top of that the response rate for polls is about 1%.

So call 10,000 to get 100 people to answer out of which maybe 50 are people you need to talk to. Good luck with that.

Posted by: Infidel at November 04, 2018 09:41 PM (2na8x)

461 Rain does that and there is some research out there about it.

Prior to about 2006-8, polling was pretty accurate for some outfits. However, the whole cord cutting, call screening, etc. was already causing some pollsters to tear their hair out. At the same time, costs of telecom due to VOIP and computers making calls near free resulted in a lot of crappy pollsters springing up.

Thus, non-response bias is a big problem when you are trying to poll a congressional district--it gets worse with cell phones of young cord cutters often not reflecting the CD of where they are living.

There is also an increase in people lying about voting or being likely to vote. It has darn near made the old National Election Survey data useless with 20 percent over reporting of voting when they did not--the last that I checked. The only remedy is to actually pull voting records to eliminate the over reporting.

BTW, there is also a well known weekend effect that Dems do better on election polling during weekends than Reps. Reps do better during week days.

A wildcard is how much does Trump's rallies move the population--usually figure about 5-10 people per attendee hearing about the event--thus a 15000 person turnout could potentially affect 75000 to 150000. It would be interesting to see if this mobilized casual voters, particularly those that tend to vote in the general and not in the midterms.

The Dems have been spending money like water on campaign flyers and TV ads but I am not so sure that in a TV system that allows almost infinite choices that the TV ads are that effective, overuse of campaign flyers also turns voters off just like constant phone calls.

491 Commercial .308 ammo can slap-fire in an M-14.

My understanding is that the M-14/M-1A have a firing pin that is loose in the bolt, not held in place by a spring, and this is part of the original design of the M-14.

Mil-spec 7.62x51 mm has thick metal on the primers to resist accidental discharge. Commercial
primers have thinner metal for reliable ignition with commercial-type firing systems.

When the M-14 bolt chambers a round, the firing pin bounces off the primer. Commercial ammo has a small but real chance of igniting.

503 Folks,

I have worked in elections at the local, state, and national level in the past. I then went to grad school, done published research regarding voting, etc. I can tell you all sorts of historical examples of elections, realignment, recall all kinds of research on elections such as the rain effect above, etc. I used to be an election junkie even when I changed fields. I am not so much anymore.

The polling is getting increasingly problematic at the local and state levels. A number of crappy firms have entered the field with little track record and who knows is doing their interviews (some have apparently been outsourced overseas). Some have toyed with all kinds of models to overcome problems but we are not there yet.

But, without decent polls in a specific race over time, reliable information on what the early voting numbers mean, without knowing all of the particulars--candidate quality, news coverage, demographic shifts in voters, ad strategies, incumbency, GOTV, etc. I would be reluctant to call a single House race within the margin of error.

The news media should really do the same as most of them suffer from making wishes on the basis of Team Blue. Few years ago, you could actually get some rational information from the news; those days are gone.

Senate races are a bit easier and Repubs will make some gains--how much depends on who flips those very close races.

Dems seem to be on track to gain some gubernatorial seats but these are idiosyncratic based on state by state particulars.

In the House, the Dems will gain some seats at the minimum 10-12 seats with a max probably around 30. I would not be surprised by any result between 10 and 30. Call the middle projection of 15 seats for the Dems as my wag.

You will know if east coast races start showing Dem flips but it will take longer to call House races than President or Senate races. In my day, I knew the bellweather precincts in the counties and what the normal vote would be from those. As a result, I could usually call a race 1-2 hours before the media got around to it by using something like the AOS decision desk via calls to county clerks or pre stationed folks who got me the counts asap. Nowadays, I simply tune it out.

As for me, going to bed is the best rather than listening to blather from the media and has-been campaign consultants like Rove.

505 Nurse Ratched,

Re the .357 problem--one is to handload or buy boutique ammo (expensive). The other is to use a heavier revolver or resort to porting your barrel (which creates new issues). The physics of the matter will make recovery from firing a .357 far different than from a .38+p. You will have greater muzzle rise, you will have more muzzle flash and recoil, and you will have a bit longer time to get back on the sights. Padded shooting gloves and good recoil absorbing grips can help especially in increasing the length of your practice sessions.

I use Titegroup to load .357s to something like .38 +P+ at around 1200-1250 fps for a 125 gr. XTP bullet. More than enough to do what you need to and without the blast that the full bore 125 gr HP at 1400 have.

Another is to go with 100-110 grain bullets--I found laser like accuracy with the old Powrball @100 grains or Corbons 110 gr. HP. I haven't personally used them but others report that Hornady 140 XTPs aren't bad to fire in this caliber either.

If you are hunting, then the 158 gr. SWC can be pretty good medicine and lighter recoiling if you use lead bullets with loads to match it.
