Thread before the Gardening Thread, November 3 [KT]

gg-bridge-12-2006.jpg

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

Good morning. Today we are visiting the left coast, mostly. The weather's nice where I am, but we face the horrible choice in the senate race between two Democrats -- Dianne Feinstein, who was blasted by the San Francisco Chronicle for her treatment of "the letter" in the Kavanaugh nomination debacle, and a far left type named Kevin de Leon. He has a "professional" (celebrity?) name. His birth name is Kevin Leon. That's who the Chronicle endorses. Of course. The Los Angeles Times endorses Feinstein in its English language edition, and de Leon in its Spanish language edition. Heh.

Anything interesting going on in an election near you?

Here's a reminder that things have been crazy in California, particularly in San Francisco, for a long time.

San Francisco, Jim Jones and Harvey Milk

Rod Dreher recently wrote a piece on the secret history of Jim Jones and Harvey Milk. The 40th anniversary of Harvey Milk's assassination, as well as the Mass Suicide of Jim Jones' followers, is this month. Dreher's piece is partly in the form of an interview with Daniel Flynn, the author of a new book, Cult City: Jim Jones, Harvey Milk, and 10 Days that Shook San Francisco.

Here is part of the author's final summary on why he wrote the book:

Jim Jones could not have killed 918 people without politicians, journalists, and activists running interference for him. They mistook ideology for ethics, a mistake common to fanatics of all stripes. Rather than learn from this mistake, they compounded it by portraying Jones posthumously as someone he was not to protect their ideology, shield their political skullduggery, and absolve themselves from the journalistic sin of performing PR instead of real reporting.

Cult City is a case study in the worst that can happen when powerful people look away from evil because the evildoer shares their politics. This repeats itself in the Jonestown post mortem, which witnesses a massive attempt to suppress the whole point of Peoples Temple: to promote left-wing politics.

The whole piece is full of things they just don't teach us about these events. I remember learning part of this information earlier, and in fact the author has written about these issues before. Flynn blasted the revisionism of Harvey Milk's history in City Journal, back in 2009. Legislation had been introduced to make Harvey Milk's birthday a state holiday:

Sean Penn's Harvey Milk is as real as Toby Maguire's Spider-Man. Who has time for the sordid details of purportedly staged hate crimes and boosterism of America's most prolific mass murderer when there is a gay Martin Luther King to be mythologized? Even the fervent atheist Milk understood the need for patron saints. When confronted by a jaded supporter over his fabricated tale that the Navy had booted him out because of his sex life, Milk responded: "Symbols. Symbols. Symbols." He understood his movement better than his movement did. When the facts didn't fit the script, both Milk and his present-day admirers adjusted the facts. As the elected sponsors of Harvey Milk Day realize, Californians are more likely to remember the celluloid hero they saw depicted by Sean Penn earlier this year than the obscure city official who walked largely unnoticed in their midst three decades ago.

David Thompson goes on virtual visits to left coast universities

Remember Evergreen State College? David has a photo up contrasting two ongoing opportunities for students.

Understanding and Unlearning Whiteness Skills Group
Every Tuesday 6-8pm

Women of Color Support & Empowerment Group
Every Thursday 1-2pm

There are a bunch of links to discussions of past craziness at this university at the end of the post.

I don't really want to say anything about David's visit to the Body Love Celebration at USC. You'll have to read it yourself. It may not be what you are expecting. And remember that a lot of the good stuff at his site is in the comments.

Video to leave on while you're doing other stuff

OK, Dennis Prager lives in California, but was not in California when this video was shot. He was in Colorado this week. In the video, he is speaking at CSU, where protesters greeted him and those who wanted to listen to him. He starts by inviting them to participate in an exchange of ideas. Remarkably, they do not just start out chanting. They had been personally invited to listen and respond in the Q and A, by young people accompanying Dennis, before the speech started.

The first part of the video, where Dennis dismantles a list of objections to his alleged racism, homophobia, sexism, etc. might help a student you know understand how the left attacks. The topic of the speech is why America need traditional values to thrive.

Hope you get to take a break and do something different this weekend. Got anything planned?

17 CAPE TOWN (Reuters) - South African researchers say they have made bricks using human urine in a natural process involving colonies of bacteria, which could one day help reduce global warming emissions by finding a productive use for the ultimate waste product.

The grey bricks are produced in a lab over eight days using urine, calcium, sand and bacteria. Fertilizers are also produced during the processes. And no, the bricks do not smell.
. . . .
One obstacle preventing mass production: the bricks use huge amounts of pee. To make a single brick requires about 20 liters of urine - a couple of weeks' worth of wee for a typical adult.

21 In PA, the state Supreme Court redrew the districts to favor Democrats, so the Republicans will probably lose seats here. I don't know how the Senate race will go, but Lou Barletta was an early Trump supporter, so I hope he wins.

All his campaign signs just say "LOU", so I don't know if LIVs will be able to associate that with "Barletta" in the voting booth. I think that was a mistake.

I saw an article in the WSJ this week that had a chart comparing white women with college degrees and white men without college degrees. The women are +33 Democrat and the men are +42 Republican. They've been tracking this since 1994 and said that gap has never been this wide. It's really opened up in the last two or three years.

(This was in Wednesday's or Thursday's paper. My boss gets the dead tree edition. I couldn't find the article on the website.)

Thank you.

Maybe a heart-to heart-talk?

How she raised you to be the fine self-governed citizen today, with her boosting you to the heights of self awareness.

Now you are sharing your wisdom, and how evil is afoot in America. 147 years of failure needs defeating, with a victory at the polls for that unlikely torch bearer of Trump and even those Republicans. Every vote against manifestly evil keeps the hope for truth, justice and the world winning American way from dying.

Her life, and the lives of you and yours, will be crushed if the Left wins. It takes the votes of all freedom-loving Americans to keep thriving as the greatest country in the world today.

Not voting is to give in to evil. It is that stark of a choice. Embrace truth, not lies.

And Trump has been doing it all his life. Anyone who has lived in or around the NYC area has seen Trump on the tube long before The Apprentice. The media regularly sought him out for interviews because he was rich and opinionated. They loved him when they thought he was liberal.

I don't give a damn what he says or tweets. I care what he does and he has done more to push causes I care about than any president in my lifetime, Reagan included.

Plus, counties that went overwhelmingly for Trump don't have much to data in yet. I assume these folks will show up on election day. Here is how many voted for Trump in some counties:

These three known cranks all have had adverse run-ins with the HOA over the past two years and have made quite a few public comments disparaging HOAs in general using terms like nazis and fascists and unconstitutional and persecution.
I am one of the incumbents. I think it would be very entertaining to have a Town Hall Meet The Candidates open forum and for my allotted time to speak, simply project on a screen all of the vile, nasty, shit-stirring things they have written on NextDoor and other sites.

69 I just went back and reread some of the run-up to the 2016 election threads. Doom and gloom throughout, based on polling mostly, with a liberal admixture of Trump personality disorder, with a couple of notable exceptions in which posters pointed out small glimmers of hope in their particular local election situations.

70 I noticed that Trump is polling 51%. That has to be a first. Maybe those that claim they are objective are starting to detach from the Matrix? Or maybe not. We live in religious times - and that's not a good thing.

I remember vacationing in the Caribbean at all exclusive resorts. A lot of East Coast people because it's a short flight. Anyway, you spend a lot of time in common areas for meals and entertainment. You could always tell the New Yorkers. They clustered and stayed together. I could never stand being around them for long. They were always high key, high strung, kinda rude, and always a little abrasive.

So it doesn't seem unusual that people in other parts of the country see Trump strictly through the lens of his behavior. But like JackStraw just said, it's results that count. Also, getting results. He's hitting AF1 almost every day, working to build a party that can get his agenda accomplished. Perhaps that level of energy requires one to be high key, high strung, kinda rude, and always a little abrasive

It's the herd mentality that can be used so effectively against us. Individuals are instinctively afraid to not follow along with what we are told the herd is doing.

Also that weird "contamination" thing going on. I am not being very coherent or articulate today, but the Left takes a bad thing and associates it with a person and no matter how unrelated the thing and the person are, just the fact that they were associated by the Left makes the person bad.

Like white are bad because slavery.

Men are bad because rape.

I've seen much better examples, but I can't think of them now.

I think it is intentional. Cults use co-dependence and batterers' techniques to keep members in line and from fleeing.
Really radical left groups do also, so there is a reason to avoid teaching how to identify and resist.

Those of us still in Northern Illinois are pretty much shell-shocked, innundated with misinformation, and just hanging on. Somehow the fantastic economic numbers and other cultural changes have not even made a dent in the omnipresent and all-encompassing (D) attitude: if you vote (R), you are a nasty and horrible person.

The gerrymandering in IL over the past 8 years (minimum) is truly astonishing. The collar counties around Cook have become (D) -- where they were always a counterweight. Springfield is similar where capitol city itself is (D), but outer ring used to be (R).

So, Chi-Town Jerry doesn't brother me because even as an (R), there is almost no way to overcome the monoculture.

I've read that the only reason he got in the fray in the first place was because the people who built his buildings told him they were taking a beating and begged him to run.

If you look at 1999 to 2000 when China got permanent most favored trade status, in the next decade 60,000 American factories closed their doors. Not much call for new buildings until those 60,000 once again found tenants.

I told my son this story before the election, and he was impressed. He asked why he never read about it in the press. Which started me on a tirade against the media, as you can imagine.

It was held at the Wynwood Ice Palace, which from what I gather is a fancy meeting/convention/ reception venue. So depending on the size of the space, maybe a few thousand, tops.

I took note that the Miami Herald made a bigger deal of him stopping into a local place for tacos and of the related hoopla than of the rally.

153 In 2016, I wasn't confident, but I felt pretty good about Trump's chances. My main worry was whether he would be able to overcome the margin of fraud.

Either he did, or else the Democrats got cocky and failed to bring their A-game, fraud-wise.

I have no idea what's going to happen this Tuesday. Objectively speaking, the Republicans should run the table. Surely people can see that the Democrats are dangerously mentally ill and are motivated by pure seething hate, and should not be allowed anywhere near the levers of power.

But factor in the incessant media disinformation and redoubled vote fraud, and anything could happen. Like I said, I have no idea.

$10k just happens to be the amount of cash you need to declare on the blue form before you go through customs.

Papadopolous left the $10k with his lawyer in Greece.

FBI agents were waiting to arrest Papadopolous at the airport prior to customs, thinking he would have the cash.

He didn't, but they arrested him anyway.

161 As I said, I wasn't crazy about Trump at first. He made no attempt to appeal to me as a voter, but if he had, he would have lost the election. My viewpoints are representative of less than 10% of the electorate.

But I observed the ridiculous level of hatred spewed against him and knew it was ridiculous. It was obvious that some people simply wanted to hate him even though he didn't deserve it.

Anyway, now that I understand Trump better and see how he negotiates, I believe he truly loves America and Americans. Whenever he says something that worries me (like tariffs) I find out he has a goal in mind that I do agree with. I think we will see the same thing with 15% ethanol he was talking about recently. He'll keep his promise to corn-growers and make it available and when people don't want to buy it, he'll say, "Well, we tried, but people just don't want this product" and let 15% ethanol fail in the marketplace.

Anyway, now I love Trump. I voted for not-Hillary (Trump) last time and next time I will vote for TRUMP.

I think that the more people associate the GOP with Trump, the better we will do overall. There are so many states and districts where he performed well that OUGHT to go GOP --- IF the election is presented as a referendum on Trumps policies.

Ok, a little confusing here. FL election board says FINAL day of early voting is Nov 3rd, today. That would mean no "souls to the polls" rush tomorrow. Someone else said it was a county by county call. Anyone have the definitive on this please?

Looks like supervisors of elections in Florida get the same # of days to early vote, but the last day to early vote can be no later than the second day before election day - i.e. the Sunday before election day in Florida, as Tuesdays are normally election days.

That law should be called the "Souls to the Polls" law.

They banned hydraulic mining in the 1800's because the silt in the rivers would mess up the fisheries.

Then they dammed ALL BUT ONE of the rivers which totally destroyed the fisheries and now, because of the silt would plug up the dams, they can't hydraulic mine.

They're not just stupid out here, they're fvcking stupid.

Nurse ratched, is he behind on his child support payments? Could you go to your AG to force him to pay up? I'm so sorry that you are going through this. My best friend's husband left her with a terminal illness and a small child to fend for herself. She beat back the disease, raised that child to a decent adult, and did okay. She never said a bad thing about the daughter's father to her, but the daughter picked up on it all by herself. Things like dad getting Christmas presents for his girlfriend's kid, but not her. She adores her mother, by the way. Dad? Not so much.

I saw a bit of a panel discussion on C-Span the other day about Democratic Socialism and one of the panelists was complaining about how awful Manchin is because he has voted with Trump 61% of the time. The guy pretty much argued Manchin didn't belong in the Democrat party. Four out of the 5 panelists were radio talk show hosts; and the 5th a former NC state representative (and currently an official in the state Dem party). The latter was the only one who attempted to argue that in politics, sometimes you have to get stuff done and you're not going to get everything you want. He was often dismissed by the others and those dismissals would bring applause from the crowd. Nope, Republicans are wrong, bad, and you shouldn't work with them.

Yeah, is it just a calculation based on bills he has signed into law? If she voted in favor of passage of the bill, then she's voted with him? What about bills that get passed without a roll call vote? Are nominations included, and her voting yes is counted as voting with Trump? These stats can be manipulated all sorts of ways.

288 Those of us still in Northern Illinois are pretty
much shell-shocked, innundated with misinformation, and just hanging on.
Somehow the fantastic economic numbers and other cultural changes have
not even made a dent in the omnipresent and all-encompassing (D)
attitude: if you vote (R), you are a nasty and horrible person.

The
gerrymandering in IL over the past 8 years (minimum) is truly
astonishing. The collar counties around Cook have become (D) -- where
they were always a counterweight. Springfield is similar where capitol
city itself is (D), but outer ring used to be (R).

So, Chi-Town Jerry doesn't brother me because even as an (R), there is almost no way to overcome the monoculture.

I like them as comparison to the girl from Columbine, Cassie, who the legend is that those psychos put the gun to her head and asked if she believed in God and they shot her when she said "yes". The media was very intent on finding the truth on that and making sure it was known that did not actually happen. As opposed to the methhead everyone knows was killed in a bad drug deal not because he was gay. They don't like covering that.

293 About "suburban women" ---- eh.
Trump won the MARRIED women's vote, albeit more narrowly than most GOP candidates. Many (most?) married women in the US are suburban.

I'll concede that Trump managed that, not because these women liked Trump, but because Hillary is so odious.
Still,.....

It depends on the suburbs, I think. There's obviously a big difference between upscale neighborhoods full of professionals and more middle-middle burbs. The demo for "suburban" is too broad to be useful.

But even if they have, the historians will probably still go for the glitzy show that they can just sit and watch.

This goes for a whole lot of stuff that the Leftist media has redone over the years in both Cinema and TV so as to blur the line between truth and the leftist wish casting.

And a hundred years from now, how will they be able to tell.

That along with the possibility that due to some glitch or an SMOD will wipe all our history away within seconds since we've stored in on perishable media.

I've wondered sometimes if a previous civilization grew and reached a pinnacle beyond us but they did the same thing so when they were wiped out there was no trace left of them.

The "Children of God" were real big around here (Houston area) back in the 1970s. In those days I was working for a X-ray service company and one day made a call at a local chiropractor's office. He had a notice, with a photo of a young girl, which said she (the girl) was mixed up with the Children of God cult, her father was looking for her, etc. Made it sound like she was an underage runaway. I had seen this girl many times out panhandling for that group, most recently a week or so before. I told the doctor in that office that I'd seen her and she was in the area.

By the time I got back to the office, my boss had already talked to this girl's father and wanted me to call him and tell him what I knew. The boss also told me this girl was 18, which meant she was free to hang out with whatever group she wanted to, as she was considered an adult in Texas.

I called her father, told him what I'd seen and also told him that if she was 18 there was really nothing anyone could do, as she was an adult. He sure didn't like hearing that.

Interestingly, I never saw that girl ever again after that.

By the time I got back to the office,

He's been to AZ. Twice to MT. I believe he was in NV a while back.

I think it's not as much as he's given up on the left coast as there aren't *that* many competitive races on the left coast and in the places there are his presence may not be wanted or indeed would be counterproductive. But there are also some states elsewhere with competitive races and he's been avoiding them too for the same reason.

351 IIRC SCOTUS gave a short stay and has now decided that the Ninth Circuit has to deal with the Childrens Climate Lawsuit first, before SCOTUS deals with it.

It's entirely procedural.

355 Speaking of Michael Mann. You'll recall that when Obama came into office he and the Ds spent $800 billion supposedly to kick start the economy. It was touted as going to shovel ready state construction projects. But then Pelosi said she didn't want jobs for burly men (her words) and it morphed into a bailout of state governments and funding for pet projects --

Yeah. Honestly there is a little kernel of truth in Obama having some credit for Trump's economic victories. Just not in the way he wants to claim it to be. Some of this recovery could have actually happened under Obama, but businesses all saw how he was acting and didn't want to start anything new or that expansive with someone like Obama in power. Why take the chance of getting a bigger hit when you could instead just hold off and wait to see if the next guy will actually let you do what you need.

364 it started out as "/s" to "end sarcasm", to be parallel to a closing HTML formatting command (e.g., /b, /i), but without the brackets.

It then morphed to just "/".

I would suspect that "///" means that the commenter was being very sarcastic.

366 There were a lot of factors that were discouraging hiring, and driving hiring overseas. e.g., Obamacare was a job killer. Net net it made new employees liabilities, not assets.

One of the best things you can do for someone is to give them a job.

370 So Obama was in Katakana campaigning for Abram yesterday More of his usual BS no doubt. One of the main guests was tatted-up rapper 2 Chainz. Never heard of him but a a quick search confirmed he is the ypical vile, thuggish filth typical of this type of "music"

373 Wife and I voted "absentee" this a.m. (MO doesn't have "early voting," just absentee*.) Took 1 hr., 45 minutes to get through.
*They actually ask you why you're voting absentee . The guy ahead of my wife in line gave his reason; the poll worker said "There are 6 valid reasons for absentee voting, that isn't one of them." The guy then said something else, and he got his ballot.

I noticed Obama was very low energy at his rally in Miami and the crowd seemed like it was trying to fake the excitment of a Trump rally.
