What? You people didn't think I'd get around to Inspector Callahan sooner or later?

Another Day at the Office

A couple of things about the movie stand out. First, Clint used a 6 1/2" Smith & Wesson Model 29 in the movie (above), while promotional posters and other marketing material featured a 8 3/8" Model 29 for added effect (below). Secondly, the bad guy in the first movie had an extremely punchable face.

The Smith & Wesson Model 29 was introduced in 1956 but was not widely known to the shooting public until Clint Eastwood lost count of the rounds he'd fired in 1971. Designed by Elmer Keith, the .44 Magnum was developed through experimentation with the .44 Special cartridge. Keith was looking for more performance and a single cartridge suitable for hunting large North American game. The logical successor to the .357 Magnum, at the time the .44 Magnum probably was the most powerful production handgun in the world. It's a distinction since held by the 454 Casull, .460 and .500 S&W Magnums, and others. Thanks to the Dirty Harry movie franchise, the Model 29 was in high demand and because shooters were not accustomed to the big gun's recoil, many purchasers became almost immediate sellers of very lightly used revolvers. When the coveted Smith and Wesson Model 29 was unavailable, buyers looked to offerings in .44 Magnum by Colt and Ruger.

Reloading Bench
As with other straight walled cartridges, the .44 Magnum is popular with reloaders. With a bullet diameter of .429" or 10.9mm, .44" is the approximate diameter of loaded cartridge. Attesting to it's versatility, a remarkable performance range exists in published reloading data for the cartridge. Bullet weights are from 180gr up to 355gr, and muzzle velocities are from 1000 fps to nearly 2000 fps. For powders, I like H110 and Alliant 2400, although other good choices exist including Bullseye, Universal, and many more. For general plinking, I typically use a 240gr jacketed bullet and try to keep velocities around 1450 fps or less. Entirely different data exists when the round is used in rifles and carbines.

The 'ettes always go straight to the front of the line on the Gun Thread! This week's old gun comes to us from phoenixgirl after a visit to Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West. Through extensive research, Gun Thread Staff has learned this is a Palm Pistol in 32 caliber extra short rimfire, nickel plated, blue finish, hard rubber grips; marked on the side plates "The Protector" and made by the Chicago Fire Arms Co, Illinois c. 1900. It's a classic hide-away gun that concealed easily in one's palm.

18 For a long time I believe the title of the world's most powerful *repeating* pistol was held by the Colt 1847 Walker. Not sure when it was dethroned but I do believe it was well after the introduction of smokeless powder possibly when the .357 magnum was introduced.

There were some VERY big single-shot pistols made, mostly as backup weapons for tiger hunters, the so-called howdah pistols.

I have a S&W model 28 Highway Patrolman edition with a 6" barrel. Visually, it looks just like the model 29, only in .357 mag instead of .44.

For .44s, I have a Ruger Vaquero. The spade grips really help tame the recoil. I can't imagine the discomfort that would come from shooting the model 29.

32 I've only had one Model 29 in my life, 8 3/8 barrel. It was as described above, lightly used by somebody who didn't appreciate the recoil. I shot it a little with .44 special reloads and it was very comfortable to shoot. Ended up selling it to a guy who was heading to Alaska to try his hand at being a bush pilot.

34 Range visit with a talented and attractive 'ette was very good. While she was shooting the hell out of the center of her target, I was having a pretty good range day with my XD9.

That thing will put rounds right next to each other, so long as I can focus. It had a bit of a high bore axis, ala SIGs, but I'm so used to it, I hardly notice or care.

Mozambique drills at 5 yards were really good, only one miss on the head shot.

A good day at the range.

The Duke turned it down because he thought the movie was too violent, and the cop was too dirty.

...Then it became a massive hit.

...Then Wayne said, "Get me a movie just like that!"

And what we got was "McQ."

This is not to make Wayne look like a hypocrite or a dope. HE WAS AWESOME. He just made one of those famous "oops" choices that all actors have done. And we got a cool movie out of it. (I love "McQ.")

39 Picked up a Ruger 10/22 Compact on sale for $199 from PSA, because I only had one 10/22, and that was just wrong.

Light as a feather, 16" barrel, feels sweet. I'm putting this in an underfolder stock because... well, because I don't have an underfolder-stocked rifle. And every gun nut needs a shoulder thing that goes up.

43 Using the NRA procedure for testing center fire rifle accuracy: 5 each 5 shot groups at 100 yards and backing it up by measuring CEP with 25 shot groups at the same range, I find that my Marlin XT-22 using CCI 40 grain Mini-Mags is a 2.5 moa rifle. That is pretty good for a .22lr that only cost $179.

The non-shifty eyes answer is to have her ship it to a gun store near you. You will likely have to pay a transfer fee but that should be all you need to do.

I'm not a lawyer, and I don't play one on the Internet. But as far as I know:

1) Your Mom can legally gift you that gun provided you're legally able to own a gun.

2) Long guns can be purchased across state lines without an FFL transfer, so one assumes a gift works the same way.

3) UPS (not the Post Office) will ship rifles.

Just call your local ATF field office. They will tell you if this is correct. They're not as scary as people make them out to be. I'm sure you'll get a polite answer.

72 Took my boy to the range this weekend. First time he has been shooting, and he's 17. My bad. As a scout he shot a pellet gun. Hell when I was Cub Scout we shot .22s, I expect better!

Well, not entirely my fault he hasn't been shooting before - he is "on the spectrum" as they say - just a bit Aspergersy. Loud noises used to REALLY bother him. I had tried to get him to go before, but he wouldn't. But he's grown up. He wants to get an ROTC scholarship! So we went to the range.

We went to the range at NRA-HQ since it is close, and inexpensive for members.

I just took along the Henry Survival Rifle, you may know it as an AR-7. I figured first time out, .22LR would be the right way to go.

His first shots were high - way high, hit the metal plate over the target. The range officer was pleased that we did some remedial training on sighting after that first round.

After that, he did pretty well.

He was pleased that we went, and wants to go again.

Next time, we will take the AR.

75 Dear grammie winger, cold and grey: This is one of those "private transfers" that people are referring to when they use the term "gun show loop hole." Basically, she needs to go to a FFL (Federal Firearms Licensed) dealer. This is typically found at a reputable range. That range must arrange the transfer to another FFL (licensed range) where you live. The transaction must be documented on both ends. The ranges should be able to help out both parties with the appropriate paperwork. It's not really complicated, just a pile of paperwork and forms that need to be filled out, and the transfer must be between the two FFL's. After that, your mom must register with the proper authorities in AZ that she has sold the gun, and you must register with the ones in WI that you bought it. I hope this helps.

She will ship it to a gun shop in your state, where you'll pick it up. You'll probably pay a transfer fee to the dealer.

Find a local gun shop and ask them about how to arrange a transfer from out of state. You might also have to do a little dance for the WI folks, for example, in Michigan you would need to register a handgun with the local PD.

Well, write it down step by step for her. In most states, you don't need an FFL to ship a gun to a gunstore. So she should be able to use FedEX. Make sure she brings it in unloaded, in a box.

go to your local toy store, and tell them that you'd like to do a family interstate transfer.

have your Mom locate a local toy store that will do the same.

the stores trade FFL info, you and/or mom pay for the fees and shipping at both ends (insure the package) and, when the rifle comes in, you fill out the required red tape for the ATF and whomever else your local laws require.

or, you could have brought it home on your return from the trip, even if you were flying, as long as you followed the rules for transporting a firearm that way.

Yep, the only ones I know of where you can do that is if it comes directly from CMP or it's a C & R. But if it's a C & R, it IS an FFL transfer, just FFL03 instead of 01.

If you do bring it back via airline you will need a hars shell case that can be locked with TSA approved locks. Those are actually pretty cheap.
Tell the airline in advance, they will check it through, TSA will probably inspect. No ammunition, must be unloaded.
I bought my AR from my sister in Florida, I live in WA state, one of my nephews brought it back with his checked luggage.
He is military so shipped free of extra charges.

I have read elsewhere that both 6 1/2 and 8 3/8 versions were used when filming Dirty Harry. But no one ever says which was used in what scenes, so it may not be so.

One of these days I'll play the DVD with my calipers at hand, take measurements, try to work out the scaling, and make my own estimate of whether an 8 3/8 model was used in any scenes that made it to the final cut.

107 357 is it for me. I find every cartridge above it too much for me when practicing rapid fire. If something requires more than what the 357 can deliver, there is always a 12 gauge for close encounters, and various rifle rounds for when you need out to touch something more than 20 yards away.

Revolvers are not meant to rest on the side, on hard flat surfaces. It may scratch the cylinder, and may cause harm to internal bearing surfaces. Bad idea for salable or museum quality pieces. A shell or pencil lifs the frame off the hard surface. For single action pieces especially! Otherwise, unlatch the cylinder of a double action and lay it on a soft cloth with the cylinder swung open on it's crane.

124 Had a good day at a swap meet. Picked up a couple thousand 148 wadcutter bullets. I shoot more of those than any other center fire round.

Also got a Pietta 1858 Remington Navy, 36 caliber, with the conversion cylinder for less than the cost of a new pistol alone. The owner said he only shot it once and I believe him. The thing is pristine. Can't wait to try it at the range. I'm used to the 8 inch barrels on most cap and ball revolvers but the shorter barrel on the Navy version balances really well.

129 Also, the EDC holster saga doesn't end. I had purchased an elastic shoulder holster for "deep concealment." I found it met the requirements for concealment, comfort, and security. Only problem is that it was black, and it showed through my dress shirts.

So I ordered one in white. Different seller, as the folks who I bought the black one from did not have them in white.

The white one is the same design and same size - BUT - in actuality it is about an inch or two less long - it is very tight and it fails on the comfort front. Let me tell you, I have sympathy for the ettes wuth those bra things - I get it why the relief when you whip them out at the end of the day.

Sitting against a tree, I can manage a 2" group @ 100 yds, after a few practice sessions, since I don't shoot it at that range regularly.

I've had no issues with the load on whitetails. Usually use a rifle, but some spots are close terrain and then I opt for the Ruger.

Well, it's a SIG. So you're going to pay a lot vs another model.

Does it fit well in your hand? Can you reach the controls without shifting grip? If so and if the price doesn't scare you off, go for it.

Most people who like SIGs really like them.

I have shied away from any revolver barrel length over 4". Passed on a few decently priced Colt Troopers in good condition due to their 6" barrels. Not sure why. Obviously the longer barrel gives the potential for better accuracy (sight radius).

Maybe some day I'll expand to the longer barrels, for now, all 4" or snubs.

166 Just got back from a range.

Hit the target OK with my new to me Sig-Saur 1911 in 22LR.

Had some FTF, so needs more lube and faster shells. Ironically, Thunderbolt shells did better than some of my other supposedly better ammo.

Did not hit the target at all with a semi-auto .223 Tabor at 80 yds. Iron sights, firing a right-handed gun left handed, and as usual, a terrible shot without a 127 mm gun and a MK 86 fire control system.

The ejector rod doesn't have a return spring. You see a lot of Sentinels with a little bit of scratching on the left side from people trying to close the cylinder and the ejector star is still out.

173 NaCly Dog, semi-auto .22s are notoriously and inherently finicky with ammo, right? Due to the low energy involved, springs, etc. My only .22 semi is the M and P 22 (got it just before it fell off the idiotic CA "roster"). So far it's functioned fine with 4 - 5 flavors of ammo. Occsional stove-pipe, but I figure that's the price of doing business with such a platform. Very fun for plinking/metal target pinging at the range.

Thanks. Not easy at all and it gets harder every season. I do use a 2x scope. The spots where I take it hunting, the line of sight is typically 30 yds or so. I'll shoot 100 rds or so getting myself dialed in.

Unfortunately I find lots of match formats very boring. Just a matter of personal taste. Static, bulls-eye matches - not for me.

Whether handgun or rifle, I want movement, use of cover, practical targets (steel, man-sized profile steel, etc.), change of positions.

Sadly the main organizer passed away, and before that the range had jacked up the costs so much I stopped going, but a range 90 minutes away used to have a steels match that included "get out bed and shoot" (in a little hut, with a bunk, set up for cowboy-action shooting).

Since it's Halloween, reminds me, best match ever, this guy had a night shoot at the same range at Halloween time about 6 years ago. He had borrowed an Anaheim PD cruiser for the occasion - so in one stage, you started in the police car, colored lights going headlights on, and at the starting buzzer you jumped out of the car, trained the car's spotlight on the target array, then picked up your loaded pistol off the top of a barrel and blazed away. Also, a stage where you trained a swiveling search-light on top of a hut at various target arrays, then engaged.

More my taste than static shooting.

Here in OH, handguns used for whitetail have to have 5" barrels or longer. So, Redhawk 6.5". Blackhawks in .41 and .357, both 6.5". Blackhawk in .45 Colt, 5.5". Really like how that handles!

Shortest revolver is the M28, 4". Love the heft of the N frame and the shorter barrel.

No snubbies. Hmmmm....

195 I have a 629 Classic in 8 3/8ths. The extra couple inches of barrel do tame a rather stout recoil a bit. Its fun to shoot, but I wouldn't be putting a hundred rounds through it in one trip unless I wanted a numb hand.

But my M-1 carbines already sort of fill that spot. They're essentially pistol-caliber carbines (in terms of ballistics), and originally mean to replace a pistol, it's just that the caliber was invented for the platform.

I don't know anyone who hunts with it as such, but it's quite popular with hunters here in Alaska as a backup carry piece in case Mr. Brown Bear shows up for dinner while you're field dressing your moose or caribou.

Yeah, you'd be much better off shooting the bear with the rifle. The point is that the pistol always is on your hip while you're dealing with the parts of the ex-moose, while the rifle may be some distance away.

208 I have fired thousands of shots from my Marlin XT and never had a .22lr fail to fire in it. The Marlin 795 autoloader on the other hand has suffered a fair amount of failures to fire. The XT has a much heavier spring for the firing pin.

I run my 45 Blackhawk at 44 mag pressures. usually a 250 gr XTP over H110. More comfortable to shoot than the Redhawk, actually.

I have a Rossi M92 in 357 and it's a lot of fun. Been debating between a 45 LC vs 45-70 for my next lever gun.

Who am I kidding? I'll end up with one of each.

Wikipedia says he made it into the International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame, making him one of the very few people to be in the Halls of Fame for more than one professional sport (the others being Jim Brown, Cumberland Posey, and Cal Hubbard).

He was also fond of shooting pigeons in Fenway Park (not during games :-).

Well, that is awful. Especially with hip surgeries and other such that elderly often have.

I knew a woman in her 80s who was real sharp & active. Then she started having issues. It started after she slipped in her garage...her dog pulled suddenly on his leash and she fell and slammed her head on concrete.

There was no Alzheimers in her family...none of her 4 siblings had it.

It turns out a major slam to the head can also trigger it. Of course, slamming your head on concrete at any age is not good for the brain.

Turns out even toward the end she would ask about me. "That girl" is how I became known...her children told me. I was very touched that she would remember me. Ack. Getting misty now.

Only reason I have one. Mine is really designed to piss them off; I have the 4-14 Primary Arms 5.56 HUD scope, and a bipod, on it, turning it into a DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle - a poor man's MK-12). Its good out to about 600 yards firing MK-262 77 gr. ammo.

Speaking of which, I have (pauses to think) 3 .357mag revolvers, but I have never reloaded a full-house .357 round. I use .357 brass on my snub ammo to avoid the carbon ring build-up in the cylinder. But I have no use for full-house loads, don't hunt, can't use mag round at matches, etc., plus, most of all, see no reason to put that much wear/tear on the guns for no reason.

Yeah, unless you need to shoot through cars or at big animals, the magnum is overkill. .38+p will get you most of what you want.

I'm far from a revolver expert, but that's been my experience with them.

Series 70 1911. Lent it to step dad as his piece he kept on the bench. He got lunged at one time when he sentenced a bad guy. Another escaped prison and said he was coming for him. Started out near Cinti and picked up near Columbus.

Browning BDA. Rebadged Sig P220 in 9mm. My personal backup piece when I was a young Ranger.

Colt Sauer in 300 Win Mag. Just a beaut of a rifle.

Needed money at some point and sold all 3 to a fellow squad leader in my company when I was at Ft Ord. At least, I know they went to a fine home.

306 I bought a model 29 after I saw Dirty Harry. I still have it. I used in the Moron shooting contest we had a while back.

I'm older now so mostly when I practice I shoot 44 spl out of it and load it with magnums for home defense. I always liked the 357s and 44 magnums because you can shoot the 38 and 44 spls out of them. Its like having 2 guns in 1. '

My M-1 Garand (Winchester) in 308 arrived from CMP. I also picked up a FN 49 in 7.62 x 51mm (that came in this week also).

I'm getting ready to re-load up some of that 6.5 mm wooden bullet practice ammo (got it for 5 cents a round) for the Swedish Mausers. Not a bad price for primed brass. I save the powder I dump out of the practice ammo and use that to reload pistol calibers.

I've mentioned it before, but I bought a Uberti SAA clone about 15 years ago that was probably $200 out the door, and it outshoots a friend's $1200 Colt. Looking down the site showing the models it's the Hombre.

I don't know if quality varies wildly and I got a ringer, but I can't recommend them highly enough if you're not worried about prestige or are buying something to shoot and wear and try to wear out.

I am a bit late to this, but setting up a transfer between two gun shops (FFL holders) might be less hassle than bringing it home in checked airline luggage.
Set up the transfer before you go, take the 10/22 to the sending gun shop there and have them send it to your gun shop. You can pick it up when you get home.
It might be more expensive because you are paying transfer fees at both ends and the shipping cost.
Just this moron's two cents.

I've had problems with light-to-moderate loads in 45LC, because the powder load doesn't come close to filling the case. Very noticeable difference in recoil and measured velocity depending on whether the muzzle is tipped up or down before firing. I'm still trying different powders, to find one I like.

I load light 38 Special loads with Bullseye or HP38, where the case is less than 1/4 full, and I don't notice any position dependent difference in recoil.

341 Moron Robbie, I buy to shoot. My prestige (generally) is already secured via my numerous accomplishments of global importance, and my near-universal popularity.

And last week on my range day I had the chance to shoot an Uberti .357/38 lever gun. Wood and case-hardening on the thing were gorgeous. Of course it shot 38 like it was .22, thanks to the weight. Not sure of exact model no. or vintage - the guy who was very friendly and also let me shoot his PC9 carbine was jumpy and sketchy, first customer I can recall where we put a constant watch on the guy. Just to make sure. So I don't think even he knew the details of the rifle.

Anyway, I've also seen very nice Rossi (now go under the label BrazArms, I think?) lever guns at the range.

Even if the oil well comes in, more likely I'll be looking at Rossi and Uberti than at Colt and Winchester, when it comes time to buy. Though first, I always set up my long-term surveillance for under-priced private used sales. I've seen many, and scooped up a few, in several years of gun nuttery.

REALLY like it... most natural point and shoot gun I've ever shot.

Took a couple of quick draw lessons from a guy who has been doing competition for many years... under 15 ft you REALLY don't want to draw down on me.... /smile

I missed out on the carbines when CMP had them. I had one of each manufacturer for the GArands except for winchester. I missed out when they had them from the phillipines and Turkey (no funds at the time) so I got that .308 rebuild as a placeholder (new barrel, rebuild WWII winchester recvr) when I finally got some money. heh.

He missed the entire 1943-1945 seasons, and most of 1952-1953, when he was in the prime of his career.

When he came back from Korea in late 1953, he batted .407 with 13 HRs and 34 RBIs in only 91 at-bats.

There is every reason to believe that he would have broken Babe Ruth's career home run record if he had not missed all that time.

Pick up an Opinel as a stocking stuffer. You can probably find a #8 at almost any outdoors store or possibly hardware store. Heck, maybe even walmart. It will probably be under $10, too. I think the number corresponds to rough overall length IIRC.

It's one of the most simple and elegant - when you see the blade and locking mechanism you'll understand - knives he'll ever have, and you'll look very clever for having found it for him.

384 Walking Dude, I've long thought my next CMP buy, if there were one, would be a service grade special (30-06). One thing that raises questions for me is the pitting in the receivers.

I seem to recall, a few years back, that there was no such advisory on the grade description for specials - is that my memory fail, or does that sound right?

I've got two beautiful HRA service grades that I couldn't improve in any way, for my taste - beautiful metal, perfect GI wood stocks with character and appropriate DAS stamps, etc. Plus of course excellent function and accuracy.

Pick up an Opinel as a stocking stuffer. You can probably find a #8 at almost any outdoors store or possibly hardware store. Heck, maybe even walmart. It will probably be under $10, too. I think the number corresponds to rough overall length IIRC.

It's one of the most simple and elegant - when you see the blade and locking mechanism you'll understand - knives he'll ever have, and you'll look very clever for having found it for him.

I'm going to kind of recommend against that. Not the Opinel in particular, but the buying of a special interest item as a gift. Seems to me that if someone has taken up something as a hobby or interest, he (or she) is developing his own tastes and preferences. Saying "I know you like X, so I bought you this X" may be assuming things that the giftee would rather you not assume. Or maybe I just a lousy person to shop for; Mrs. the Bilderberg has said as much.

428 Iowa Bob, I think Trail Boss was developed specifically for what were originally black powder calibers, like 45LC, thus the huge case fill (I love the "max load" guidelines - whatever you can fit in the case, without compressing it, is the max load for any given caliber). That's why I mentioned it - there would be no position considerations with medium to max loads (which are still light in terms of energy).

And most powders are dirty at lower level loads, in my experience. With lead, though, the vaporized lube seems to be, by far, the major source of filth, in my experience.

For leading considerations, I generally follow the formula for optimum alloy hardness/chamber pressure found in the "Technical" tab at Missouri Bullets' website. Others may know if that formula is valid, but it seems to work for me.

So far I'm not impressed with Red Dot, it goes "bang", seems to give decent accuracy, but it's dirtier than Bullseye or HP38. I doubt I'll buy more after I finish the pound I'm using now.

I'll report back on the Universal, I'll probably try it first in .40 S&W, as I have a bunch of brass cleaned, sized and ready to load.

I used up a whole 5-lb jug of a Universal-equivalent from the main Spanish ammo producer, powder called CS-B in North American distribution (got it during the Great Component Shortage, I believe following the Second Great Obama Gun Panic, in 2013).

Have an 8-lb jug of Universal as my strategic reserve powder, for when/if another panic (or, allah forbid, even more CA firearms oppression) occur.

Yep, you are correct, they didn't used to have that warning.

I think maybe that is because alot of their stock now is returns from the philippines and the humid unforgiving climate not good for long term weapons storage.

I had a SA , HRA and a IHC in 30-06 and I got a field grade IHC rebuild in .308 and it mentioned considerable pitting. I was a little worried but it had 1 little dot (pit) on the recvr.

The Service grade .308 Winchester had none.

The Service grade IHC (ordered earlier this year) had none also.

I have heard the same story on the CMP forums (the pitting warning is there but generally it is very little to no pitting on the service grades and also on the specials).

I've never been much of a baseball fan, but I got interested in the claim that MLB is getting more and more boring. I read some long articles last night on the subject.

According to that, the pitchers are just getting too good for the batters, and there's less "action". Home runs and very little "hustle" with running and base action.

The conclusion was, as they're getting better and better, more scientific, the rules as is just favor "boring", and that rules changes are needed to shift the strategy to more hustle and action.

Yeah, lower pressure == dirty has been my experience as well, although some powders seem worse than other, even between similar burn rate powders.

I'll have to check out the technical information at Mo Bullet. I recently ordered from them (my mailman hates me now), but I haven't looked around at the technical information. I do like their bullets. My general rule is to keep cast bullets under 1000-1100 FPS to minimize leading. Not a problem for 38 or 45ACP but something to watch with 9mm, 40 or 357.

In many ways the laws are good. Their are some restrictions that Merkins may find hard to handle but if you use the car/gun licence analogy not too bad. As we are a small country we have the national law (think federal law) only to deal with, not State laws . The over arcing legislation is the Arms Act and the individual is licenced as a " fit and proper " person to own various firearms by the NZ Police. The are different category of licence , eg
A Cat equals standard rifles, shotguns, small mag semi auto rifle, etc. No registration of these, shoot anywhere with them ( within reason)
B Cat equals pistols, where you must join a pistol club and shoot only there and jump thru hoops to, to get the licence. pistols are not really liked by the politicians and you cannot hunt with one.
C Cat is for collectible items, pistols, sub machine guns, machines guns. We can still import these into NZ and while we can own you cannot fire, unless you are one of the lucky few.
D is dealers, similar to FFL Class III
E is for mil spec large mag rifles AR15, scar, fn, ect. Higher security and registration and more paperwork.
In general the laws work, but the lefties in charge and also the top brass of the cops are anti gun and are always trying to shit on us. We do have a strongish pro gun lobby and a NZ outdoor/shooting /hunting culture.

I have not used it, but think I recall hearing the same thing. When powder supplies get tight, guys end up using alternatives. Most competitive shooters buy in large quantities of the same lot for the next year to avoid having to develop new loads mid-season. Or running out.

475 Speaking of TAC, I got some to use in reloading my Garand 30-06 ammo, to get more precise powder throws (it's sort of a flattened ball powder, like most pistol powders, not stick, like most rifle).

I use the Lee Auto Drum (which is ridiculously consistent with my handgun reloading - I've changed my QA checks on powder to every 20-25 rounds instead of every 10, as was my long-standing practice, it's so reliable).

With 4064 (stick powder), I was getting noticeable variations in throws; with TAC just about exactly dead-on consistent (as with handgun powders). I'm assuming it's the powder shape that enables this.

For my needs and style of shooting, not all that important, but definitely a more consistent charge with TAC. When I finally build my AR(s), I assume the same will apply with the .223 reloads (for which I already have the dies and components ..... yes, advanced stage of the disease - tools/components before any actual platform in the caliber).

And last week on my range day I had the chance to shoot an Uberti .357/38 lever gun. Wood and case-hardening on the thing were gorgeous. Of course it shot 38 like it was .22, thanks to the weight. Not sure of exact model no. or vintage - the guy who was very friendly and also let me shoot his PC9 carbine was jumpy and sketchy, first customer I can recall where we put a constant watch on the guy. Just to make sure. So I don't think even he knew the details of the rifle.

Anyway, I've also seen very nice Rossi (now go under the label BrazArms, I think?) lever guns at the range.

Even if the oil well comes in, more likely I'll be looking at Rossi and Uberti than at Colt and Winchester, when it comes time to buy. Though first, I always set up my long-term surveillance for under-priced private used sales. I've seen many, and scooped up a few, in several years of gun nuttery.

I am happy with my Rossi. I did some work on it (DIY Action Job Kit from Steve's Gunz). Removed the rear sight from the barrel and mounted a rail. Steel mag follower and better mag spring. Smoothed the trigger. Replaced the bolt safety with a peep. Usually go with a pistol scope on the rail when hunting. Peep when plinking.

There was a slight constriction under the roll mark in the barrel that I lapped out. I often shoot cast 140 gr SWC (SAECO #383) or 180 gr SWC (358429) and was having a bit of leading until I lapped the constriction out.

Kind of a kit gun, but fun to set up.

FWIW, I got a CMP Service Grade last December and it has no pitting at all. It's in very nice condition, receiver was made in Sep '44, the barrel has a 1966 date. I'm guessing it was never issued after the barrel was installed.

Oh man, I'm sorry.

This kind of thing is sadly common with the cut down 1911. I think SIG has one that works reliably. the Colt's never will. I've seen guys dump hundreds into gunsmithing and it still doesn't work reliably.

Hell, Kel Tec's are better

Honestly, sell it. Get a CZ 83 or a Springfield or Smith and Wesson or Kahr 380. Even the Kel Tecs are better.

I would try different mags or a new recoil spring. I have an old, blue Mustang. One time I had similar problems. Took it apart and found the recoil spring all twisted out of shape like a fouled up Slinky. Replaced the spring and plastic guide rod with an aftermarket all-steel unit.

492 Spankmeister, many, many 1911 problems come down to - magazines. With that platform, not so easy or cheap to experiment with different mags, and not sure there are any after-market mags.

Other than that - worth getting to a stop gunsmith. Especially if it's a carry piece.

Haven't kept up completely, but I thought there was some chaos at Colt, including the Custom Shop, related to their endless financial problems (I was lucky to get a connection and a fix for a collectible revolver just before the latest spate of problems developed).

But mags/springs are worth a look, first. Have you checked the Coltforum and asked around? Pretty amazing info and expertise one can tap, on occasion, on the forums.

509 I shot my Colt Officers Model Special in 38 Special today at the range. It was fun but not very accurate. I think the crown could use some work. Next week I'll take my single action only Smith and Wesson K38 ( 14-4) to range and see if the accuracy is any better. Shooting 148 gr HBWC flush seated over 2.7 gr Alliant Bullseye.

513 make sure your 1911 mags have the little raised dot on the front end of the follower: it's there for a reason because G*d put it there to begin with.

during the recoil cycle, rounds in the mag, unsurprisingly, are exposed to movement. the dot was added to make sure the next round was in the proper position to cycle into the chamber.

other makers, not knowing/caring about this, left it out, to shorten/cheapen the manufacturing process.

throating and ramping can usually address any issues not solved by this one simple trick.

527 471 I have a stainless steel Colt Mustang PocketLite 380 that I bought for EDC in 2015. (It's a "baby" 1911 action). The damn thing will only fire two to four rounds before I get either a failure to fire, or failure to eject that ties up the reload process. I have tried at least four types of ammo and get the same results. It really pisses me off since I paid ~$700 for the "Colt" name. Please let me know if you have any ideas how to fix this abomination. I'm about to send it back to Colt... but I am looking for simple ideas that I may have overlooked. Thanks in advance.

529 Thanks to all for the comments/help. I have the two original magazines and two additional mags I bought and tried. (all "Colt Approved" suppliers). To be honest, I have not yet checked the mag springs for proper orientation and/or strength. I WILL try that.
I really like this pistol because when it fires - I can hit what I'm aiming at. But I refuse to carry a POS that won't reliably fire when required. I just wondered if there was anything I had overlooked.

569 507 Spankmeister, can endorse the CZ-83 (assume the weight is no more than your Colt, but dunno), and I think the Springfield EMP in 9mm (also a mini-1911 format) is reliable. But mags/springs are worth a look, first. Have you checked the Coltforum and asked around? Pretty amazing info and expertise one can tap, on occasion, on the forums.

572 Does the Desert Eagle chambered in .44 Magnum count ? The recoil is heavier yet not as crisp as 1911 chambered in 10mm. Probably due to the weight.

I was also a very early adopter of a laser sight which I attached to the scope mounts on the pistol. For reasons that are not clear, the manufacturer had the 9v transistor radio battery mounted on the back of the sight and held in place by a cheap plastic cover.

I think it was two 240gr rounds later where i got whacked in head from the ejected battery as it broke loose from the laser sight.

OK, so you're looking at either a timing problem (presentation of the round for the slide to strip it off) or a ramp geometry issue.

You original description of the FTF is when you are partway through the magazine. IMO, that bubbles the timing to the top.

So, this is about the recoil and magazine spring being in tune with one another. Yes, check mag spring orientation. DIY things to try would be replacing recoil and mag springs. Wolff has these and the mag springs are +5%.

FWIW, I replace recoil springs when I buy a used piece and the owner can't give me a round count in 1000s. I tend to buy new mags upon acquisition and replace the used mag springs if problematic (new recoil spring, new mags work, used mags don't - replace mag springs).

I've not had to do any ramp geometry work to solve any problems.

I have a Sig P238. No issues.

580 My first .44 Mag is a Ruger Super Blackhawk w/t 7.5" barrel. It is without doubt the most accurate pistol I own with iron sights. One of my brother in law's sold it to me after he decided it was to much, I absolutely love it.

My second .44 is a Super Redhawk w/t a 7.5" barrel and a 7-20 ss scope. Its as much fun as my SB. Both produce fireballs bigger than my Mosin's.

Sadly the local indoor ranges seem to think both are "To loud" to shoot indoors and I've been asked not to bring them even though I was shooting factory ammo I purchased from the range. They also didn't care for my reduced power target loads.

Thanks for commenting, but I'm pretty certain it's S&W Model 29 - 6 as stamped on the inside of the crane. The serial number indicates a 1996 manufacture and its laser engraved 29 Classic.
