My boss and his wife were robbed when they were leaving the Paris airport in a taxi. Thugs came up, smashed the rear passenger window. Instinct was to protect your eyes from the glass. Depends on the state.
In VA I certainly am legally permitted to drive on a public street, pull over, get out, and so on. If I'm threatened while being legal, I have no duty to retreat. That's been the situation in VA since forever.
If I do get angry and shout, but then make clear that I don't want to continue the confrontation and the other party ignores me, then I can again say self defense.
States are different, so the duty to retreat isn't universal but it does persist in some area.

First time someone broke a swiss army knife blade off in the side of my beadlocks. I guess the idiots who tried to slash my 38" tires with a toothpick didn't realize that the hummer has a tire inflation system onboard.
Second time my truck was keyed - but a surveillance camera in the parking lot caught the dumb bitch and I pressed charges.

I used to have to walk blocks around City Hall in Philly because of the mess of the Occupoopers, there. The only reason they eventually had to leave was because City Hall was having major work done on it. Without that, the Mayor and cops were happy to let the scumbags make a third-world of City Hall ... which only made the outside look match the inside operations, I guess.

A foul mouthed young man did the same to me yesterday at a silent vigil at the local abortion clinic. About a half an hour in he came screaming down the street for us to "get the f#% off the sidewalk and get the f^%$ off my planet". When he got to us, he kept trying to grab and rip our signs while he went through the standard SJW repertoire of insults. He seemed to get stuck on how white we were (ignoring the black folks in our crowd). Dude was white as snow and when I pointed that out he got in my face and yelled "I'M JEWISH YOU ANTI-SEMITE PIECE OF GARBAGE".
I almost asked him if he kissed his mother with that mouth but decided against it as he was already physically threatening to the older people in the crowd and I didn't want to scare them further.

There is a reasonable expectation that the cops at least *try* to break up a riot and then send in big guns from the National Guard if they can't. No, you probably won't be saved by a cop during a riot because it's a damn riot. But that isn't the case here.
The cops (via their mayor) are doing *nothing* and effectively condoning this behavior. If they were to deputize the rioters, I would not be shocked.

These people have nothing so are not afraid of conflict. They know their opponents are outnumbered, and have lives, families, property, jobs, and reputations to defend.
The people in the cars have to go around and have a minor inconvenience so their min-max equation is easy. (minimize maximum loss) but it is wrong. What they have to lose is civil order. Once that is gone, we are all fucked. So they turn defense of civil order into a commons that they can abuse and expect someone else to take care of. Someone like Bernie Geotz -- a true American hero.

Its like Louder with Crowder, he has people on but they're just an excuse for him to talk loudly at them on whatever he wanted to without regard to the topic or what they are interested in. His interview style is 90% talking over people and 10% waiting for them to take a breath so he can talk some more.

Mr. Trump CAN nationalize the Guard and put them under his authority. But that is EXTREMELY rare. Last time that happened IIRC was in 1970 when the Guard was mobilized due to the Post Office strike.
