The stories they told were literally unbelievable. Literally. Unbelievable. Kids told them about "The Naked Movie Star Game" where they'd have to undress and strut the cat-walk for guests. In another incident, kids claimed that they were led to a ceremony to engage in Satanic rites. A photo array was put before a kid, and he was asked to circle any faces of the men who took them to the ceremony. The two men identified? An LA attorney and martial arts legend Chuck Norris.
The McMartin preschool trial was a day care sexual abuse case in the 1980s, prosecuted by the Los Angeles District Attorney Ira Reiner.[1] Members of the McMartin family, who operated a preschool in Manhattan Beach, California, were charged with numerous acts of sexual abuse of children in their care. Accusations were made in 1983. Arrests and the pretrial investigation ran from 1984 to 1987, and the trial ran from 1987 to 1990. After six years of criminal trials, no convictions were obtained, and all charges were dropped in 1990. When the trial ended in 1990, it had been the longest and most expensive criminal trial in American history.[2] The case was part of day-care sex-abuse hysteria, a moral panic over alleged Satanic ritual abuse in the 1980s and early 1990s.
This link may not work for long, but this seems to be the full movie. The Chuck Norris part is at 109:30. Of course, that's just the case they made a movie about -- this panic swept up all of America. Commenters remind me that Janet Reno made her reputation (to the extent she has one) riding this wave of insane panic.

Why? This wasn't a "prosecution", it was a Senate committee hearing. If she had done what you wanted that would have given the dems countless hours of free campaign sound bites for November, which is exactly what they were hoping for.
She did her job and didn't get into the theatrics that the dems wanted and gave her report today to the committee which said that ford is a lying biotch.

He spent 18-years in jail. The board of pardons unanimously voted to commute his sentence in 2000, but then-Governor Jane Swift (R) refused to follow-through. Because, reasons.
It's widely accepted that he (and the rest of his family) were convicted for crimes they never committed.

a. The creation of false memories is a really widely and well documented phenomenon, and the factors that play into it are the subject of a pretty well known literature.
b. C Blasey is basically the middle author of a small pile of second rate publications in psychology, and from a brief perusal, she's basically the statistician involved.
c. This means that she's encountered the literature but isn't really deeply into it. She's the local person in the psych dept. that people go to to make sure the statistical methods and conclusions of the paper are OK.
I mean, she's also on papers about autism, depression and velocardial facial syndrome. My bet is she doesn't know that much about any of those either. She's the second-rate departmental stats wonk. Most university psychology depts have at least one.

Out of those 4 - Flake, Murk, Collins ManChin, it's important that 3 vote the same way and not 2/2.
It has to be 51-49 or more to confirm. 50/50 means (depending on how the actual votes are) that one of those 4 could have negated Kav being on the SC. Say it's the three Rs for and ManChin against. There's nothing to be gained by saying had Flake (or either of the two ladies) flipped. It's then 50/50 and Pence casts the tiebreaker.
All 4 are looking for cover. If they all vote party line, it's mute. If they all vote in favor, its mute. If they all vote against, it's mute. Because on "one" single senator either confirmed or negated Kav on the court. They can go to their state and say "Hey, it wouldn't have mattered had I voted the other way. The votes to confirm (not-confirm) were there regardless of how I voted. It's CYA at its worst.
But I think Collins leads that pack. She got what she wanted was "prosecutor" to question Ford. Flake got his one week FBI supplemental. Murk is along for the ride. ManChin also is. I don't think he bucks the other 3.

She's a stats monkey, doing stats monkey work. No offense to stats monkeys. But they are merely consultants to other fields on experimental design, checking the math, and making pretty charts.

I once told an academic friend of mine that in my opinion Economics was nothing more than social psychology but with a useful metric (ie money). He really didn't take kindly to it.
It's possible to do useful psychology and sociology, but I agree with you that much of it is onanistic BS. People are waking up to this fact, and reform will come, but it will be slow. Just look at the mess anthropology was in 30 years ago. There's some good social and physical anthropology now. Still some junk, but it's waaaaay better now.

In the last few years, a number of industries have gone through highly publicized outbreaks of SJW bat-shit insanity, only to have the witch hunt fall apart.
What the public sees is the initial uproar, maybe a bit of the downward spiral, then the media tosses it all down the memory hole.
What they *don't* see are the internal purges associated with businesses that have decided that - for example - some female employees may pose an existential threat to their livelihoods.
It's also pretty rough watching a bunch of young women who haven't done anything have to pay for the grandstanding of a bunch of older harpies, as their job apps get thrown in the circular file. Many of them had no idea it was happening.
It's taken years for things to get back to normal in some fields, but now the effects of this are going to be felt across the board. This circus is a whole new level of fucked-up.

The nice thing about looking at econmics that way is you can then ask (for instance) when people do act like homo economicus, and when they don't, and then you can explore (quanitatively) the strength of the motives for acting non-rationally. With regular sociology you just babble about paradigms and hermaneutics and cultural blah blah shit and you can't predict squat.

Yep. Its disturbing and troubling for me to watch the culture and medical science move more and more to define anyone not extroverted and strongly sexualized as mentally damaged.
I see this all the time with some of the moms..sure their kids are quirky but pretty well functioning, academically on par but they fight tooth and nails for the school to stick a label and provide services.
Yeah I'm seeing that up close, with a woman who had some learning issues in school insisting her kids are somehow damaged or autistic too. They're both REALLY bright and somewhat odd, and I think its some sort of ego thing to force them into a box like she was so she can feel less weird or something.
Sadly, she was abused by various foster parents over her life (almost certainly the source of her learning issues) and she works really hard to prevent her daughters from looking or acting like girls for fear of what will happen to them.

There's another big factor involved: if you get "diagnosed" as "being on the spectrum" or having any form of other so-called "learning disabilities" or "cognitive differences," then you BY LAW (at least in California) get special help and special treatment at school -- AND the school gets extra $$$ to "care for" you.
So botht eh mother and the schools have a motivation to get the kid diagnosed - -the koms think it will help the kids get a leg-up academically, and the school wants that $$$$.
One of my sisters-in-law is a "Special Ed" teachert and she rants about this constantly. She has hundreds of student in her "special ed" classes, and she says less than 5% of the them are actually retarded or seriously weird. The rest are either false diagnosed, or are just teen criminals who get dumped in the classes too.

Grassley could have had the Sargent at Arms remove those dumbass protesters and enforced some decorum. He could have called Senator Spartacus out for his histrionics. He could have told Feinscrunt to produce the letter she had after she leveled the charges against Cavanuagh and grilled her on it. He could have taken the opportunity to remind Senator Hirono that no one is compelled to just shut up, and he could have denied Ford the opportunity to speak after her uncooperative response and her silly demands. Grassley had every chance to control his committee to minimize the buffoonery that is the democrats.
And as far as Chinless Mitch is concerned, at the end of the day the results speak for themselves.

And this is the key. I'm gonna keep saying this, because its a source of deep frustration for me. What she accuses him of doing isn't even serious assault.
It depends a lot on the mood and the attitude of the people involved. Its like watching a scene with different kinds of music behind it. Was it silly fun music with laughing, covering her mouth and saying "shh don't be so loud" or was it creepy with tears and gritted determined teeth, covering her mouth as she stares in terror?
The problem with the scary interpretation is how the hell does she get away from two older, stronger, bigger boys set on raping her out of a locked room? And why the hell did she go into a back room with two boys while everyone was drunk in the first place, did she figure they'd discuss the Homoousios Clause? Did they go in there to search for her lost keys? You don't go into a back room with boys at a drinking party for innocent reasons to begin with.

Decisions made in that committee have ramifications far beyond the optics that may or may not detrimentally affect the Dems in the next election. The discussion should have been as serious and somber as the subject and it's downstream effects. To allow a man like Kavanaugh to be denigrated and impugned, and the committee and the process reduced to a clown show is the epitome of poor leadership. It should have been expected and nipped in the bud. Ruthlessly.

Having followed this somewhat closely, I've been sideswiped at times because I didn't realize that many (if not MOST) people have the impression that Ford's is a rape accusation. To anyone following AT ALL, it should go without saying that hers is an ATTEMPTED rape charge (and a dubious on at that, if you pay attention to the details).
Just recently, I had a couple of people pipe up with the classic "I know someone who was a victim, and they say..." I asked, "Now, your victim you speak of is a rape victim, right? So it's an almost completely different thing, since even the allegation here is only of ATTEMPTED rape." All I got in response - even from the Kavanaugh supporter - was crickets. I assume that means that no, they did not realize that EXTREMELY important point.
I assume that a lot of this has to do with how it is framed as an accusation of "sexual assault". Technically, it actually IS, but normally when the general public hears that term it's a euphemism for "rape". This is on purpose, of course - it's propaganda - and it's one of those cases where even Fox is as guilty as the rest of them.
To go further with your "= He didn't rape me." theme, I would observe that the vary idea that what she described was an attempted rape (even if it happened at all, which I very much doubt) is a matter of opinion. By her own account there was absolutely NO success in getting ANY of ANYBODY'S clothes off - not so much as a button popped off, or a torn sleeve. Not so much as a belt buckle undone. If this drunken scumbag really wanted to rape her, why did he simply leave her alone after she escaped to the bathroom across the hall? Makes no sense.
But to answer your later question, she said she was pushed into an upstairs room from behind, supposedly being unaware there was anybody behind her. There is no explanation for why she would wander upstairs away from the group - when this is supposedly a social gathering. Of course, there's also no explanation for why she would be part of this small gathering of friends, when she wasn't friends with any except one (who says under oath it didn't happen).

The worst and most insidious thing about the Satanic Day-Care panic was how parents who were peripherally-involved just by having their kids in the suspect daycare centers and who were properly skeptical about the absurd claims - wound up being threatened as well. "Oh, yeah? If you don't go along with these claims? What are you trying to hide ... comrade?"
There was a particularly ugly case in (IIRC) the Pacific Northwest where families who very publicly doubted the Satanic abuse accusations, and spoke out in defense of the accused -- got accused themselves in turn.

I put a comment out on FB about how, while the Dems claim it's not a campaign to smear the Judge, that you literally has Sen Whitehouse paging through Kavanaugh's High School yearbook, on national TV in a Congressional hearing, looking to make hay from the careless 35+ year-old ramblings of teenagers. That it devolved to talking about farts.
I got crickets. I think the people who might have read it are mostly liberals, or maybe didn't know me - or the subject - well enough to even believe it.
Normal people who saw that have to be asking themselves, "Geez - what could somebody make of it, if they went through MY high school yearbook."
Do they notice "this is ridiculous, bring high school into this"? Maybe some yes, some no.
Now the Leftists - and Judge Napolitano, but I repeat myself - are salivating over the possibility of the FBI going after Kavanaugh, claiming perjury if anyone can be found to dispute his characterization of his 35 years past drinking habits.

That does a bit better as to why this is supposedly a big deal. I see: "... hypnosis could be used to improve rapport in the therapeutic relationship, to assist in the retrieval of important memories, and create artificial situations that would permit the client to express ego-dystonic emotions in a safe manner."
I don't know exactly what this means, but that sounds closer to what I guess the assumed conclusion is, that they were intentionally planting delusional memories.
It also gets into something Judge Jeanine got into on her show: 'The authors noted that hypnosis as a means of recovering traumatic memories could also lead to the "contamination" of those memories.'
So that's "old news" to me.
Judge Jeanine speculates that her therapist notes likely show that this recovered memory of hers is probably from hypnosis, and that it's well known that such memories are very unreliable. So that would be one reason not to release the notes.
I'VE noted that the only person she even claims to have given Kavanaugh's actual name to is her hsuband, and he has neither testified nor made a statement under oath. Maybe everybody just accepts that his testimony is basically worthless anyway.
