This. Two of my nephews (by two different sisters) went to trade school - one to a culinary school and the other got diesel mechanic training. My sisters both called me the day their sons told them they wouldn't go to college and cried their eyes out. Both have great jobs and are doing really well -- the mechanic understands farming and earth moving engines and is making six figures. After watching the two of them, I would NEVER recommend college, especially for a white kid who's going to get accused of being a horrible raping racist privileged person. Both are really well read, great young men. The funny thing is one sister didn't really come around, I think in her heart of hearts she'd like her son to go back to college. People are just irrational about what college really is right now.

I am hoping to send my boys to some voc. tech. in their summers of the last years of high school. Welding, maintenance, HVAC, etc. Then, if college is in the cards, fine, if it is STEM or other well-defined professional path. Otherwise, they have a marketable skill to fall back on.

Hence my dilemma. I am poor, the kind of poor you read about in books. Not college kid "I can't afford to go to that concert" poor, but I make so little money each year I don't qualify for taxation. The only way I have internet is because I live with a brother who pays for it.
My health is a mess, and I tore up my arm somehow to the point that it feels like its on fire and lit sparklers are being rammed down it when I twist it or exert in any way. I think I tore a tendon or strained it somehow, the really long one that runs the length of your arm.
I cannot go see a doc because I can't afford the $200 an hour plus lab tests.
So do I sign up for obamacare, which I could do and get super coverage because I'm poor as hell and ill, despite thinking that it is literally an immoral program? Or do I just take advantage of the stupid crap that's out there because only a sucker plays by the rules?

I used to teach College Accredited classes in Network Engineering... the EXACT same curriculum as was taught in College.
We did it in 9 weeks, in College it was a TWO YEAR program.
Best part? I actually had a College Professor come and sit through MY classes, because he was going to have to teach it next semester and didn't have time to learn the curriculum on his own...

Yes, the social stigma is part of what bugs my sister -- even though the nephew (this is the culinary school) is making a very good and stable income, far better than any of his buddies who went and got poli sci degrees.
But I don't think it's all up to the trades -- we ourselves need to start changing our attitudes. Mike Rowe has done a lot to help bring respect for hard work. The purpose of a college education is to become more well-rounded, to learn to think more clearly and critically, to understand the world and various ideas better, and to through that be a better man or woman -- a better citizen, a better human being. Through that you can be better at whatever you apply yourself to, but it is not meant to get you a job.
Even if you get a degree like medicine which requires a college education, the purpose of the education is just that: education, not the job. Treating college like its a trade school or a method of getting work is exactly what is wrong with modern education. For about 500 years people understood this, but only in the last 40 or so have people decided its just a jobs program that costs you as much as a house.
People have got to get away from this idea.

But I try to be friendly. I was leaving my lesson the other day and the next professor was walking in so I introduced myself. "Bander, German, you?"
Guy says "International studies". I said cool, because I'm polite, but I had no idea what he meant. So I went home and looked it up in the curriculum.
International Studies is an interdisciplinary program designed to build student expertise in particular world regions and/or about diverse international issues including globalization; global population, migration, and health; international conflict, terrorism, governance, and law; imperialism, decolonization, and development; And the role of gender, race, and class in international contexts.
I do not teach at Yale. This is a mostly commuter college regional state university. It is not elite. But this is what it is everywhere and all the time.

college used to prove/improve the "kid's" discipline -- to think and work. And for many majors, the skills for the actual job were learned on the job.

Yea, even more than poor sales, what I fear most is someone finding a really stupid mistake in my books. I have typos, which I don't like but can live with until I can fix them because mainstream big publishing houses have typos. But a major factual or timing error, that's something I dread. Its humiliating and damages the credibility and immersion of the rest of the story.

Oh, but it is and due to a SCOTUS ruling. Companies that used to use basic reading and math tests back in the day to test for competency can't do that anymore. EEOC found that was biased and had disparate impact on minorities, and came up with horrible regs on job testing that were upheld in (I think) Griggs v. Duke Power Co in the mid 70s. Not wanting to be sued every time they hired somebody, companies then started to use having a college degree as a substitute for basic reading, 'riting and 'rthmatic abilities. That is what started the big rise in folks seeking to get college degrees, it's not that job needed the degrees but companies used the degree as a legal weed-out factor. I don't think you'll ever go back on that, unless we have a second revolution and the EEOC goes into the dustbin of history.

Something else, there are Drs. -- very good Drs. who have decided the current system, where they have to pay a quarter million dollars a year in malpractice insurance while only generating three hundred thousand in revenue doesn't work for them. They've gone the 'voluntary contribution' model.
I think you should ask around about 'free' clinics in your area. I know of many people on the poorer side of the spectrum who get excellent health care and toss what they can afford into the jar. It seems enough to keep the Drs. supplied and satisfied.
Other then that -- AsperCreme applied daily, every couple of hours. Topical application of anti-inflammatory drugs is slow, but ultimately extremely effective.
I just had a bout of bursitis -- ugly baseball sized bump on elbow -- that took a week to go away. Maybe cost me a dollars worth of AsperCreme.

To get a degree at Princeton you used to have to do an oral examination, in front of all the profs in your degree, in Greek, Latin... without advance warning which language it was going to be in. Gaaaah! I hate to say this, but IL DMVs are very good. Considering how parochial Barky is, he might not have experienced anything else. Old Jesse White (Chicago dem pol) somehow really brought order and efficiency to the DMV. If I could ever vote for a (D), Jesse White would be it.

In my area we have 'Urgent Care' facilities, 'Free clinics', and the hospital ER.
'Urgent care' is prolly about 25% of the cost of an ER visit from what I've heard.
'Free' clinic could be free, up to you.
ER is for the wealthy and people who have already blown through their deductible for the year and just don't care.

BTW I have clients who, upon receiving a large sum will express fear that they "will lose their Medicaid." I explain to them that I don't have Medicaid, nor does any rich person. And that, surprise, the BETTER docs prefer private insurance.
But for those raised on the D plantation, they are imprinted with the fear of losing their "benefits" and this fear is ruthlessly exploited to keep them down.

Christopher, I would go with the Obamacare; You need the assistance and it's there for you. My husband and I took it because neither of us had insurance and we also had a son to take care of.
And I hesitate to suggest this because it sounds like you're in a lot of pain right now, but can you go to a walk in clinic, and as as far as paying can the horde do a gofundme or something for you? You are a long time poster and much appreciated contributor and the horde has helped out other people in need. I don't have a lot of money myself, but a found an unscratched lottery ticket on the ground worth $50.00. (Thanks be to God!) I contributed some towards Ace and would be glad to give a little to you. Won't pay all the bills but it might help a little if others contributed.
