Steyn: Great civilizations can survive a lot of things, but not impoverishment of spirit. That's one reason I didn't join in the media sniggers at Donald Trump's new Space Force - because I'd like it to be true. ... Those "Space Age" astronauts were men of boundless courage and determination: they strapped themselves in and stared not just death in the face but death in hideous and unknown ways. Yet they were also ordinary men, who were called upon to do extraordinary things and rose to the challenge. These days we are unmanned in more than merely the sense of that Luna 2 expedition. Glenn and Armstrong are gone, and their surviving comrades are old and stooped and wizened, and yet the only giants we have. Space may still be the final frontier, but today, when we talk about boldly going where no man has gone before, we mean the ladies' bathroom. Progress.

https://tinyurl.com/ybj76hb4 Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at September 10, 2018 10:45 PM (5aX2M) T.F.G. Cicero knows this one: "A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear." Posted by: DR.WTF? at September 10, 2018 10:50 PM (T71PA) 186

The Japanese Honor Code was what made it's warriors among the greatest fighters in the world, even they were not of great physical stature and had few other inherent advantages over other cultures. Believing in Honor means you have something powerful that you believe in more than you believe in your own life - And once you accept that your own life is not the most important thing in the universe, then it becomes much much easier to fight to the death. It even becomes natural to continue fighting to the death even when defeat is assured, because Honor is more important than Life. That's how the Japanese fought.
And men who are willing to fight to the death with no reservations are the hardest warriors of all to face. (compare to Arab fighters, who will fight wildly as long as they are convinced they are winning, but who believe that Allah has fore-ordained a loss if things go badly. Which is why every Arab army for the last 700 years has broken and run the instant the battle begins to turn against them. Arabs have no concept of honor, because Islamic culture does not value honor) Posted by: Tom Servo at September 10, 2018 10:55 PM (V2Yro) 206

She probably will. She's still two levels above anyone else in women's tennis. She loses eveey once in a while but, in general, she can beat the crap out of all of them on a regular basis. She's old for a female tennis player and she's had some medical problems that have taken their toll. It's more likely that she's been taking some sort of steroids and that has been the problem. Personally, I'd like to see them start muzzling ALL the women players who shriek and shout when they hit the ball. For the great majority, they don't do it because of effort but as a sort of cheating to distract the opponent (as they are still shrieking as the ball is being contacted by the opponent) ... or just because they think they're doing "what men do" (which is just not the case).
Monica Seles had a serious neurological issue that caused her to shriek when she hit the ball and the rest of the women picked up on it as if that was what made Seles great ... No, girls ... it was a mental thing. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at September 10, 2018 11:04 PM (w0IWw) 238

She never used to get any, because she's just not good looking, but now a few companies are really pushing her. It's annoying. She's pretty much the last thing I feel like seeing in an ad. And this new thing with making her "super-mom" is just pathetic. But it's funny they are saying how tough it is to play and be a mother (which I don't disagree with) but just 3 months ago they were complaining that women who give birth ought to get special ranking hold treatment - right now they are treated like having injury lay-offs, as to allowing them to have a protected ranking for a certain amount of time and number of tournaments. Palpatine, the Japanese army started out as highly trained and motivated, but with losses and garrisoning requirements they wound up having to expand much faster than they expected.
Unfortunately, the officers and the troops were not up to any fancy movement, toward the end of the war, and often they had to rely on fast movement, elan and mass wave attacks on contact to carry the day. I was happy to see Martina Navratilova staunchly defend the umpire and the enforcement of the rules, which was an implicit criticism of Serena.
Posted by: Margarita DeVille at September 10, 2018 11:15 PM (0jtPF) The umpire had no choice but to take away the point. The coaching violation was a certain class of violation that is cumulative over the match. The racket breaking is that same class (and everyone always gets called for those violations - so much so that some people actually play a point with a damaged racket because if they get a new one they will get the penalty for racket abuse) and the second violation of that class requires a point penalty. The ump had no choice. And Serena was bitching at him about the point penalty, which she was totally wrong about. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at September 10, 2018 11:19 PM (w0IWw) 275

Heh! moment this evening. Went to a saloon in Apache Junction for a couple of beers and a sammich. There was an old but very shiny Volvo 245 wagon in the parking lot, with a hot pink cardboard "scream" in the back window that read (in a shaky hand) "Trump = traitor = impeach".
So I go into the bar, and sit down, order a beer and meal, and wonder who the owner of the scream is. There is a big woman in a baggy outfit, wearing a sort of Rosie-the-riveter do-rag, sitting a couple seats down from me. I mostly ignored her until my sammich was gone, and then she asked the bartender about an address that would be in East Mesa. I asked her what she was looking for in that area, and she said a do-it-yourself car wash. I told her, "You don't have to go that far, there is a good one at Ironwood and Superstition." She then developed a raging case of hiccups. I suggested to the bartender that the lady might like a glass of ice water, and she poo-poohed the notion, but he brought it to her anyway, and it did end her hiccups. She thanked me for the help, and left. About ten minutes later, I left myself, and the Volvo with the pink scream was gone. I drive by the aforementioned car wash, and there it is, in a bay, with the large gal waving the wash wand over it. Suspicion status: confirmed. On one end, there was a little slat of flat wood, pivoted on a nail, so it could spin like a propeller. You held it in your hand, and used your free hand to rattle another short round stick of wood up and down the row of notches. The "propeller" would spin merrily. After being awarded the Purple Heart as part of the 82nd Airborne Division in Bastogne, Howard Anlugen returned to the US to play linebacker with the NFL's Boston Yanks during the 1947 and 1948 seasons. On his 95th birthday earlier this year, he was asked what he thought of today's NFL players taking a knee during the National Anthem. "I don't like it at all," Anlugen said. "It does not reflect well on today's players or the league. "In my day, if you were going to take a cheap shot at one of the other team's players, we at least waited until the opening kickoff." Apparently "taking a knee" had a different meaning while Anlugen was in the league. Posted by: tankdemon at September 10, 2018 11:38 PM (nNjeG) 334

So I'm around the house this evening about 7 my kids tell me they heard a gunshot followed by a scream. I was inside and didn't hear anything but they were sure it wasn't fireworks so we go for a walk to investigate.
About two blocks from my house we came upon a chaotic scene with police, ambulance, neigborhood, sobbing lady, kid on a stretcher and a bloody, dead dog. Seems the dog attacked the kid and was shot but by who is not clear, but I think the police. Lady crying I think was owner of the dog but maybe also mother of kid who I have never seen. Oddly I heard no sirens. Did the police come in response to m the dog attack and then killed it? Police weren't talking and and none of the neigbors seemd to know either, or weren't talking about it. Posted by: Kindltot at September 11, 2018 12:28 AM (2K6fY) I don't think we have grand juries in Canada. A Coroner's Court might handle cases where it is uncertain who what to who. This one seems cut and dried, and likely a Crown Prosecutor (similar to DA) would simply enter a charge of manslaughter (or muder, if there was evidence of intent). Door locks.
Buy commercial locksets from your local locksmith. Install supplemental steel reinforcement plates in the door frames, and door reinforcement plates behind the door-locksets. Drive 6" or longer screws every six inches through the doorframe, and into the house's framing which forms the door opening. Make sure those screws are sunk below the wood surface. Putty, sand, paint. Make 'em disappear. NO ONE will kick in your door. And that Police type swinging battering ram? Gonna take more than a dozen strikes, and that's by their BIG GUY. Wanna make it tougher still? Blind dead-bolts, top and bottom corners of the door. Visible only from inside the house. Oh, and all of this predicates a steel door, first. You don't have a steel door? No? Then you have but a slightly delayed entry system. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX You'll pay dearly. Posted by: Jim at September 11, 2018 12:47 AM (QzJWU) 528
Clubbing with an AR-15 would depend on the furniture involved I would guess. The more substantial butt stocks would hold up. A drive down to the ground would be safer. Swinging like a baseball bat might get a broken stock (buffer tube). (shear force at the rear of the lower receiver is limited).

Posted by: yankeefifth at September 11, 2018 12:45 AM (MTjB1) I think it might depend upon one's clubbing style. If you were to grab the forearm like a baseball bat, and swing the rifle to club a miscreant, it might upset the bedding of the action in the stock. I guess you're specifically talking about what would happen to a cop shooting like the Dallas one in Canada.
In general the cops investigate a crime and arrest the suspect; then the Crown Prosecutor [the D.A.] decides whether to press charges. There isn't a Grand Jury but usually a Provincial Judge reviews the Crown's evidence [like the "People" bring a case in the U.S. to a Grand Jury] and decides whether there's enough prima facie evidence to accept the charges. If yes, then it moves onto the full trial, and any subsequent appeal(s) if any by the losing side. In some cases there is no preliminary hearing and it goes right to trial. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Criminal_law_of_Canada #Preliminary_inquiry I don't know the systems in other provinces but if a cop in Ontario is involved in a crime or during the performance of his duties e.g. shoots a suspect (or a bystander!), gets in a car accident etc. there is an investigation made by the non-police, civilian Special Investigations Unit instead of the cops investigating themselves. Before the SIU was set up, cops from a different jurisdiction would investigate the situation like having the Ontario Provincial Police [Ontario's "state troopers"] investigate Toronto's Metropolitan Police but that was thought too subject to an appearance of a lack of impartiality even when it was a different force investigating the alleged transgression. Goofs Kate Mulgrew was born April 29, 1955 and hadn't yet turned 24, by the time the show made its debut in 1979. The character of Mrs. Columbo had been referenced since Lieutenant Columbo's first appearance in 1968, when Mulgrew would've been 13 years old. Hmm, isn't the piston system recessed into the stock ? Posted by: weft cut-loop at September 11, 2018 01:01 AM (c07y/) Piston System ARs, vs. Direct Impingement ARs... the piston system resides (generally) under and to the rear of the front sight. With the remainder of the system extending aft, in the space normally occupied by the gas-tube of the D-I systems. What you're describing is the Recoil Buffer, which resides within a stout tube, which doubles as the "chassis" over which the buttstock-of-choise, is installed. Short version. The part you'll want to research is the "Buffer Tube", and there is a Civilian Version and a Mil-Spec version. Always buy the Mil-Spec. The "Gas Piston" is the primary motive power to operate the rifle's action. The "Recoil Buffer" is the spring powered, weighted buffer (which looks like a piston), that RETURNS the Bolt Carrier Assembly to Battery, after the Gas Piston slammed the whole damn thing to the rear. In the Direct Impingement System, nothing but the burning combustion gasses power the bolt carrier itself, as a "pseudo piston" into the Recoil Buffer. Both are AR pattern rifles. Lower and upper receivers are identical. As are the Recoil Buffers, buttstocks, pistol grips and most marketed fore ends. But the gas front sight block, gas tube OR Piston Sight Block, captive piston and operating rod, as well as the complete Bolt Carrier Group, vary wildly between the two divergent platforms. They're nearly identical, except for where they're not. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at September 11, 2018 01:17 AM (QzJWU) 609

I was doing tech support for Lockheed Martin on the overnight shift. I was close to being done when word went around the help desk that an aircraft had crashed into the World Trade Center. Everyone was asking how that kind of an accident could happen and I remembered that a B-24 had crashed into the Empire State Building during WWII, but conditions were really bad.
I went into the break room when my shift was over and was talking to my supervisor Will W. who was a retired USN bubblehead. We got along well both of us being Navy. We were watching the tv when the second plane hit the other tower. I looked at him and said, That was no accident and that it was an act of war. Will said yeah, but what country has just attacked us and where do we fight back. I said all of them. Turn every country from Pakistan to Syria into a glass parking lot. I have never forgotten and I will never forgive. The best thing we can do is go all medieval on all their asses. If they want to play medieval, we can play it better. Sadly, from George Bush to the media to all the PC SJW pukes, we cannot call the enemy the enemy. What amazes me is the everyone -- and I mean EVERYONE -- is missing the point about the Serena Williams meltdown brouhaha.
It's not about sexism. It's not about racism. It's not about entitled celebrities. No, what this incident proves finally in front of the whole world, is that Serena Williams is taking steroids. What she exhibited on center court is classic " 'roid rage" behavior, seen in boybuilders and athletes who take steroids. It's for some reason taboo to note that Serena Williams' body underwent a huge transformation about 10 or 15 years ago, when she went from normal tennis-player-body to Incredible Hulkette massive Crushinator body. How can it be that NO other female tennis players have developed a body like hers? Even though they work out and practice and play just as much as she does? The only way any woman can get a body like that is by taking real or artificial male hormones, aka "steroids." I don't know why this isn't discussed more. Oh wait, now I do -- she has a magic shield of protection around because of her race and gender. But this latest rage explosion is conclusive evidence for me that she is on the 'roids.
Jim Posted by: Jim Ah, thx for the clarification. I know there are 2 systems for the AR but not certain on the version that use the stock as an element. So, this ultimately would mean that using an AR as a club is a bad idea? And, after a story about getting kicked out of Disneyland when he was caught smoking in the Magic Kingdom after a concert as a teenager, Obama issued an impassioned critique of Trump and the state of American democracy and encouraged the crowd to back the candidates he came to support."

Oh, ye Morons, I am sick at the heart. My step-grandson, who was slated to go into the Navy as a nuclear engineer, has been denied any position in that service. This, because his crazy (objectively so) mother had him committed when he was 14 for being depressed and suicidal. He was discharged a day later because he wasn't depressed and suicidal. Nevertheless, it's on his record, and the Navy now will not accept him in any capacity. And this, of a young man who any of our armed services would be lucky to get. Please, those of you who pray, have him in your thoughts during this trying time.

Appearing on stage with Moore at the Toronto International Film Festival, Hogg spoke to the Canadian crowd about saving America and turning their "shame" into "votes."
"I have a question for you guys: Who's ready to save America? Who's ready to make America the country we say it is on paper and make it the actual country that it wants to be?," Hogg asked the Canadian crowd. "I think the most important thing to realize, however, is the problems we face as a country, whether it be water in Flint, Michigan or the amount of mass incarceration of people of color that can't vote." Hogg continued by suggesting that Canadians can donate money to political campaigns in the United States, which is a felony. After making the embarrassing remarks, Moore took the microphone away from Hogg. Posted by: SMH - Future proprietress of Bartertown at September 11, 2018 03:06 AM (z3nSX) 684

Today is my 'Day of Rage'. I still have a white hot rage about that day. I saw the Towers fall while standing in the middle of 5th Ave. Almost slugged a proggie who was telling everyone 'it's our fault'. My fists were bunched ready to swing when I heard a fireman (from a stationhouse around the corner) whisper in my ear, 'I heard what he said. I have your back'. First time I heard that proggie 'it was America's fault' bullshit.
That that day has been so thoroughly whitewashed by the media pisses me of to no end. And I cannot fathom schools who think remembering 9/11 is detrimental to some snowflake's mental state. Can't wait, actually I can, to hear what PC bullshit deBolshevik spews out of his worthless piehole. If all gun owners are responsible for some crazy ass shooting up a joint, then all muzzies are guilty of 9/11. 9/11 changed my life. I lost an across-the-street neighbor in the crash into the Pentagon. Sorta knew two of the USN officers in the message center. I was a mile away. An unforgettable day.
But I can look on the personal positives. I walked 2 miles to help a woman get home, against the flow of refugees from Reagan Airport. She left 5 minutes before I got there. She got stuck in the grid-locked traffic, and was on the road 6 hours. I was in my near-by house 4 hours earlier. I went to her door to wait for her. She is now my wife. An on another note, viewing of the Miss America pageant went down 36%. I guess turning it into
a scholarship pageant based on the most PC correct things said-and removing the swimsuit portion was a bit of a problem, eh? Posted by: FenelonSpoke at September 11, 2018 07:24 AM (AllCR) 764

I would think that removing portions of their swimsuits would have increased viewership. Posted by: Bruce at September 11, 2018 07:25 AM (8ikIW) 765
oh this day, it changed my perception of reality. i'd just been a normal soccer mom until I watched that horror, I didn't shut off the news for one year , I watched as we went from a majority of americans in sync from wanting to doevrything we could to save lives, to wanting justice to 'it's our fault'.
and than Benghazi..we'd changed so much that we arrest an obscure video guy to take the rap for mismanaged arms dealing for ___ ? and the possibility that (Hillary private server? outted the plan?) terrorist were not actually blamed but We citizens because of free speech. and the day becomes a day of service, and to forget and forgive the deaths of all those innocents and all those that died trying to stop the threats of islam. anyway, may their names all be remembered, and that our cause was just in fighting back. The wife told me they still have some version of the swimsuit contest, it's just no longer televised. They win some points in preliminary round, which I suppose can eliminate them from further competition. So what's the point? Reduce viewership? Make men less rapey? Posted by: clutch at September 11, 2018 07:29 AM (4y+4X) Is that a good thing? ;^) For decades women have gotten into the Miss America pageant knowing there was a swimsuit component. I assume that they have worked out to look pretty in a bathing suit, but all the sudden we're going to pretend that nobody cares about womens looks or that nobody judges people on that basis? Why not just have them answer a question, "What is the biggest problem facing America". So silly and politically correct. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at September 11, 2018 07:37 AM (AllCR) 780

I have a friend who describes himself as a liberal. He and I disagree on a number of things. However, he voted for Trump because he didn't trust or like Hillary Clinton, but he doesn't like Trump or agree with all his decisions, is leery of Evangelicals although he's a Christian, and he is enraged by the shutting down of conservative websites, He believes in free speech. He was a Democrat voter for more than 50 years. I can't say that he won't be a Democrat voter again depending on who they put up, but if the Democrats think everybody who describes themselves as a liberal is on board with the crazy leftward turn of the party, they're wrong. The guy who started walk away is planning for a National March in D.C. The week before the election
