Trust Your Betters: The Expert Tom Nichols Says That Rewarding Democrats with Congress Will Make Them More Moderate; David French Says There's a "Huge Knowledge Gap" Between Trump Supporters and His Fellow Liberals

Tom Nichols*, an "expert" of the sort who offers his expertise for free on Twitter, as one does, now expands his infinitely-expansive expertise to cover political game theory, and claims that handing Democrats both houses of Congress will force them to become more moderate.

Because, you see, once they have full political power, they will not take that as a signal to become even more leftwing, but will be forced to moderate in order to keep their seats.

I guess this was NeverTrump's reasoning for trying to gift Hillary Clinton with the presidency -- if you deliver her the presidency, she'll have to be super-moderate to get reelected.

Hey, it worked perfectly with Barack Obama, so let's give it another try!

Update: A commenter asks of The Expert Tom Nichols: if giving Democrats further power will cause them to moderate, why should it not be the case that voting more Republicans into Congress will cause them to moderate as well?

I guess my commenters are actually More Experty Experts than The Expert himself.

Or maybe Tom Nichols is just another one of those partisan liberal Democrats pretending to be a rock-ribbed Republican on Twitter in order to better subvert Republicans.

And now for David French, the Only True Conservative on That Stage (which is MSNBC, by the way):

* Tom Nichols is one of the #SalonHot25 who wrote a book, much publicized by the left and NeverTrumpers (but I repeat myself), called "The Death of Expertise," which argues that people must not speak outside their areas of credentialed expertise and must always defer to "experts." Because conservatives refuse to subordinate themselves to self-declared "experts," Nichols says they're anti-learning and anti-thinking.

Notably, though Tom Nichols himself only has a narrow field of expertise -- if that -- specifically, Russia and Russia policy, he routinely opines on what he incorrectly believes the law to be, what he incorrectly believes political strategy to be, etc., etc., etc.

For a guy who's chief claim of to expertise is penning a book claiming that no man should speak out except in his narrow area of credential expertise -- well, Nichols sure the hell does ignore his own thesis and awful lot. Almost as if his thesis is not really "defer to experts in their field of expertise" but "defer to people who claim to be smarter than you are," which is a group of people of some billions.

And many of these people are on twitter, once again offering their "expertise" without asking for payment for it -- as experts do.

Oh, one more interesting thing about Tom Nichols --

while he pretends to be anti-conspiracy theory, he is Thirsty to be on TV, and appears on the Science Channel's NASA's Unexplained Files, which credits him as a "National Security Analyst," presumably an Expert, which I'm sure gets his ego hard.

The show is basically an In Search Of... style show which frequently promotes UFO conspiracy theories. It does feature real science and real NASA history too, but...

...Yeah, it also features a lot of alien-baiting.

It plays at "balance," offering "both sides" of the UFO debate. But they definitely make sure they cover the UFOs Are Totally Real side of the "debate" with a fair amount of I-Want-to-Believe sympathy.

They're not saying it's aliens, but, as a wise man once said: It's aliens.

Now, The Expert himself doesn't say things are due to aliens. He is there to provide a veneer of "expertise" so that the next couple of guys can claim it's aliens while seeming to be part of a Real Documentary.

Like, The Expert will offer a very brief Wikipedia run-down on, just making up an example here, the Cuban Missile Crisis to set up a UFO conspiracist to ask, "Was Lee Harvey Oswald actually a Grey?"

In my opinion, he's lending his Expert credibility -- such as it may be -- to a show that also wants to imply that aliens are totes real.

Dramatization: What if Amelia Earhardt didn't disappear over the ocean at all?

The following clip provides a funny example of the show's style and POV. Tom Nichols was not on the show at this time -- he signed up to appear on this alien-baiting show for four seasons, but after this season -- but you can see the show's fair-and-balanced take on UFOs here.

The clip is about the so-called "Dragon's Triangle," or "Pacific Bermuda Triangle," where, the narrator informs us, many mysterious apparitions have been reported. The narrator then tells us that in less-sophisticated times, sailors attributed these apparitions to "dragons and demons."

But now the author of "The Dragon's Triangle" can dispel that superstitious tomfoolery -- because now we can say with a high level of confidence that the apparitions are actually sightings of alien UFOs.

So, you know, I haven't kept up with the show, but this is the show that the TV-Thirsty, Wannabe-Famous Tryhard Tom Nichols signed up to pose as an "expert" on.

AlexTheChick Confirms:

Unexplained Files is what I watch while I am in between Ancient Aliens episodes. It's full on UFOs are real dudes. I mean, it's tons of fun and it has information buried under the we're not saying it was aliens but it was aliens but it's complete brain candy.

Bonus Expertise from Rob Crawford:

French's "knowledge gap" is an appeal to secret knowledge. Basically, he's shoveling a conspiracy theory.

Yes, these guys do seem to "know" a lot of things not reflected in the public record.

NeverTrumpers see themselves doing the housecleaning. They don't understand that they're the trash.

When the GOP suffers electoral defeat (whether it's in two months, two years, six years, or more), there will be a reckoning. Some groups will be in and some groups will be out. The small group of NeverTrumpers, who are actively helping the Democrats, think that the rest of the party will come crawling back to them, begging for their leadership. I mean, stranger things have happened, but the smart money is on the party tossing the traitors out... or the traitors leaving on their own to join the Democrats, who will be back in power.

Of course, Reagan lacked tools Trump tenuously grasps, and that long gone society required far more concessions to the ruling elite. Now, the -actual- American people are in rebellion, and the authorities are cracking down. It is not time for a genteel Reagan, but a vengeful Trump.

If more power makes a party become cautious and moderate to retain power, why didn't that work in 2002, or 2006, or 2016? Why didn't the total control of both houses of congress and the presidency cause the Democrats to restrain themselves instead of going full bore hard core extremist radical left?

What he really means is "we can finally rid ourselves of this troublesome President and I'm willing to pay any price whatsoever to that end." But he can't come out and be honest.

252 I think Nichols' idea is that in order to pass any legislation, they'll have to moderate actual legislation from their rhetoric. Which is true.

The problem, though, is that they won't be able to pass anything of any significance because Trump won't sign it, which means they'll probably just continue on their road of screaming for two years until they scream loudly enough that the American people give them the presidency as well.

And then they'll have won two national elections based on screaming insanity, which means that's how they'll govern.

So, yeah. Nichols is really really wrong.

This is the perfect opportunity to mention this. The other night, someone was wondering about the alien implant doctor.

I couldn't remember the name, but Art Bell used to have him on all the time.

Roger Leir was his name. He was podiatrist and he did a lot of "implant removal" surgeries. Google him and you'll find some of the videos of him going after supposed to alien implants.

He's dead now, Jim. "They" got him, I guess.

Impeachment is definitely a political act. Go back and read about Johnson's.

Congress searched and searched for some reason, any reason, to impeach. No matter how unpopular Johnson was, they still needed to have something that resembled law breaking to hang him up on, so Stanton gave them what they wanted when he refused to walk away from a job he had been fired from.

Trump, to me, -- go away no one cares what you think micky -- has something in limited availability. Common sense.

How many true businessmen have been president? One or two.
Now, what of the 'budget'? Is everyone on a committee and busy doing committee things and/or is anyone at all working on an actual budget? No?

Perjury would have been a high crime, if the nation was actually Christian, but no matter. Even if Senate Republicans took enough bribes to cuck, Trump will simply crush them. They can have a million traitor parties for their dead traitor buddies, but sternly telling Donald Trump that he isn't President? A "misdemeanor" is "a minor wrongdoing". The opposite of a high crime, in other words. The Constitution's phrasing basically means "the President can be impeached for any reason". The surrounding language, defining the process, limits that to what Congress can get away with.

High Crimes and misdemeanors according to common law would encompass the following....

No, they really don't. As people keep saying, impeachment is a political process not a legal one. Sure they dress it up with some nice language but the truth is if enough House Reps come up with something they can get enough to agree is a High Crime.

They would pay a high price if it was purely political without some sort of actual crime underpinning it but they could still impeach him.

It's kind of academic though. I don't expect the Dems to take the House and there is no way that 2/3 of the Senate is going to vote to remove unless there is a real, substantial crime.

I was just reading a little history on the adoption of the phrase "High crimes and misdemeanors". It was the result of several committees and compromises.

Impeaching judges wasn't too controversial, but impeaching executive branch officials was. One argument was, hey an election every 4 years is enough of a check. The other was, no, it might be so bad some process is needed to get the guy out right then.

And so they debated it. The original proposal was "treason, bribery, and corruption". Another group wanted to drop "corruption" and add "maladministration".

Madison thought that latter was too broad, so "High Crimes and Misdemeanors" was the final compromise wording. It had meaning from English law tradition of removing Crown officials.

The "political price" is ultimately not losing votes, or losing influence, but the general populace rising up against the government and saying, en masse, "No More".

The Constitution does not define those terms but they do have common meanings (and had common meanings at the time the Constitution was written). There have to be actual crimes committed. Being mean to the press and people on Twitter does not count. "We don't like him" does not count, either.

The threat of an aroused populace that is well armed is why the founding fathers didn't feel the need to spell out the exact rules for impeachment

Here's a paragraph from a discussion of this on the Constitutional Rights Foundation:

--------------------------------

Since 1386, the English parliament had used "high crimes and misdemeanors" as one of the grounds to impeach officials of the crown. Officials accused of "high crimes and misdemeanors" were accused of offenses as varied as misappropriating government funds, appointing unfit subordinates, not prosecuting cases, not spending money allocated by Parliament, promoting themselves ahead of more deserving candidates, threatening a grand jury, disobeying an order from Parliament, arresting a man to keep him from running for Parliament, losing a ship by neglecting to moor it, helping "suppress petitions to the King to call a Parliament," granting warrants without cause, and bribery. Some of these charges were crimes. Others were not. The one common denominator in all these accusations was that the official had somehow abused the power of his office and was unfit to serve.

Here are some hypotheticals about impeachment of a president, used commonly in class discussions about the meaning of the phrase:

Hypothetical Case #1
The president, after a long feud, has killed a political opponent. The state in which the killing occurred has indicted the president for murder.

Hypothetical Case #2
The president has committed bigamy. His previous wife left him 30 years ago, but he failed to get a proper divorce before remarrying. He made false statements on the forms he filled out to get a marriage license.

Hypothetical Case #3
The president has secretly sent assassins to kill a hostile foreign leader. This violates U.S. law.

Hypothetical Case #4
The president has just pardoned five high-ranking members of his administration who had been convicted and sentenced to five years in prison for bribery. The president had nothing to do with the bribery scandal.

And with his first miracle raised marriage to a special sanctity, which occurred through the intercession of his Mother, by which she herself in one of her few recorded statements in the bible said: "do whatever he tells you to do".

And you could spend a lot of time thinking about what the master of ceremonies told the groom . . . "you have saved the best til the end" . . . and how many iterations of meaning there are in that exchange.

555 And with his first miracle raised marriage to a special sanctity, which occurred through the intercession of his Mother, by which she herself in one of her few recorded statements in the bible said: "do whatever he tells you to do".

And you could spend a lot of time thinking about what the master of ceremonies told the groom . . . "you have saved the best til the end" . . . and how many iterations of meaning there are in that exchange.

559 Oh - by the way - that "Mac and Me" clip is the subject of one of the funniest practical jokes ever done on TV. Paul Rudd ( Antman and the Wasp was great, btw - see it) - would play that clip every time he went on Conan to plug whatever movie he was in at the time - instead of playing a clip form the movie. As it was a repeated joke - over a number of years) he had to get clever about getting Conan to believe that this time, really, for real, he was going to play a clip form his recent movie. One clip even starts with some of his latest movie and then goes into this clip - it's pure comedy gold!

The other involved an older Jesus horseplaying with a buddy when the boy falls from the roof and breaks his neck. Jesus is accused of pushing the boy to his death and so in desperation, he raise the child from the dead and demands that he tell everyone that he didn't do it.

585 The Miracle at Cana is a stunning revelation of God's love and his expression of Reason through His Son, Jesus Christ. The context of the Miracle involves the Commandment of Honor thy father and thy mother - in this case, Christ's mother, Mary. She knew that her Son was divine, and yet she demonstrated her authority over her Son in requesting Him to transform the water into wine. No other religion up to that moment ever described an incident where a woman compelled a divine being to perform a miracle by right of law and custom. Yet Jesus obeyed His mother.

586 The quality stuff too because the best wine was served early and the cheaper stuff brought out later when the guests were drunker and wouldn't appreciate the drop in quality. Thus the steward's statement.

Hmmm....if #3 is an executive order, then yeah, no grounds for impeachment. However, as stated ("violation of US law"), then there would be grounds.
With respect to #1, I think it's a bit fuzzy, since it is a State law. The President can always be tried for murder after he leaves office.

591 I never understood Jesus turning water into wine as his first miracle. I mean, I can't do it, but it seemed
more like a parlor trick - level event than anything else.

When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, 'They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it."

I think there's a lot here.

First, Jesus' mother obviously knows what she's asking of him, at least she does once he points it out. "My time is not yet come." obviously doesn't mean, "I don't have $300 to go to the store and buy wine for a wedding party."

Second, Jesus submitted himself to his mother's authority. He didn't just say, "no". There are volumes to be said about our Savior's condescension to live among man and be subject to the environment here.

Third, as "parlor-trick" as this may seem, changing the fundamental nature of basic elements is a big fucking deal, to quote a retard. Sure, faking something like that is small potatoes, but actually doing it is a whole different thing.

Fourth, God is subtle. God doesn't grab you by the throat and scream at you to believe, He gently invites you to do so. Starting off with an undeniable miracle isn't His style.

602 It goes back to how many right-wing people view leftists as idealistic but misguided, while left-wing people view their opponents as evil fascists.

Therefore every effort should be made to persuade leftists of the error of their ways. but your right-wing enemies just deserve to be shot.

Why do people buy into this so much? Part of it is the example set during WWII, where the alliance with the USSR required certain compromises. Another big part of it is that is that left-wing propaganda is pervasive and works.

Finally, leftists are by definition people who believe they are pure and their motives are pure and the world is unjust and out to get them. This is their position. Were they to entertain any doubt about their righteousness, they wouldn't be leftists in the first place. So it's never their fault.
