Politico: Why the Smart Move for NeverTrumpers Is to Become Democrats

Replace "smart" with "inevitable" and you've got something.

There's a new debate inside the #NeverTrump movement about how to respond to a president they loathe and the Republican Party that loves him.

And a party they loathe, let's admit. They're not hiding that anymore. They've always loathed Republican voters, but saw them as useful idiots, easy dupes for advancing themselves.

But now the Revolting are revolting, and suddenly, the NeverTrump rump doesn't seem to like Republican Deplorables as much as they used to barely pretend to.

Some #NeverTrump conservatives, like the New York Times columnist David Brooks and former Bush White House aide Reed Galen, are talking about creating a new third party. Others, like George Will and Max Boot, have become registered independents and are urging voters to put Democrats in charge of Congress this November, as a kind of temporary stopgap measure until the Republicans return to their senses. But according to speculation reported by POLITICO, former McCain 2008 chief strategist Steve Schmidt may go one step further: He’s reportedly thinking about signing up with a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, possibly former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz.

No doubt Schmidt would get attacked for being an opportunist. But if you are a conservative, #NeverTrump, pro-immigrant, free-trading, anti-Putin defender of the post-World War II international order, the only principled and practical move left is to join the Democratic Party.

The moment for temporarily endorsing the Democrats to block President Donald Trump was the presidential election of 2016, not the midterms of 2018. Had more Republicans endorsed Hillary Clinton two years ago--

The Courageous Ones were and are cowards, and merely hinted the living shit out of their endorsement of Hillary.

Not quite courageous enough to tell their audience the truth about their positions.

But super-courageous otherwise -- believe them.

--movement conservatives would likely be giddily anticipating the return of one of their own to the Oval Office in two years, as an obstructionist GOP Congress blocked the Democratic president’s every move. Instead, they're facing a potential 2020 campaign that will be even more unpalatable to them than the choice they were presented with in 2016. Instead of Trump vs. Clinton, they could get Trump vs. Elizabeth Warren, or even Bernie Sanders.

...

Once #NeverTrump conservatives accept that they have completely lost the core debates about the direction and purpose of the Republican Party, they can open their eyes to the possibility of winning some debates inside the Democratic Party. By playing a direct role in electing delegates to the 2020 Democratic National Convention, #NeverTrump conservatives might even prevent what horrifies them most: a democratic socialist president.

...

Join the Democratic Party? That’s the "slightly less bad" option, wrote Galen, where conservatives would be "disliked and distrusted, pushed to the margins." But wait, how is that different from the space #NeverTrump conservatives occupy in today's Republican Party?

...

There is no perfect political home for the #NeverTrumpers. So it's time for them to choose the place where they can do the most good, for themselves and for the country.

This all makes sense, and I endorse their official migration as soon as possible. It's clear many have already made the unofficial switch to being loyal footsoldiers of the Democrat Party.

The trouble is, as Sean Davis points out, is that they have greater earnings potential and perpetually-alienated The Republican Party Left Me fake Republicans than honest Democrats.

Declared Democrats are a dime-a-dozen. Not enough opportunities for graft. Plus, the NeverTrump rump has the disadvantage of being unfashionably white, older, and mostly male -- not exactly the demographic the Party of the Future is looking for.

NeverTrump will just continue pretending to be Republicans who just happen to spend all their time attacking Republicans -- a much more valuable commodity to the Democrat party than a bunch of pasty white old white men with sagging asses.

Speaking of which: The Weekly Standard. The Weekly Standard is "transitioning" itself, trying to become a conservative-side-of-the-liberal-wing sort of publication, a sort of new (old) New Republic.

Now, they're one of the few magazines asked to "partner" with FaceBook (what's that mean? Does FaceBook pay them?) to do fact-checking. They're the only nominally conservative magazine doing this service for FaceBook.

Does anyone think the dreary, tired, failing, no-one-reads-it, zero-influence Weekly Standard would have been asked by FaceBook to do some "fact-checking" duties if it had just been another admitted liberal magazine, another Vox For Boomers, let's say?

No. Pretending to be "conservative" got an aging, fading barely-was-and-isn't-no-more magazine the small amount of prestige and, who knows, favorable FaceBook links that they never would have gotten if they were just another dreary leftwing webzine.

And they're more valuable to the Democrat cause in pretending to still be "conservative." Consider: A big cover story on how Devon Nunes is a big fat liar and how the FISA process was perfect in all ways would not have roused any interest if published in Salon.

Especially if that article were actually written by a Democrat staffer for the Senate Intelligence Committee.

But publish it in the dying Weekly Standard, and it's a "conservative" magazine saying so! Huzzah!

There's a little evidence that the Weekly Standard is deliberately, knowingly playing the Democrats-pretending-to-be-Republicans-to-Better-Hurt-Republicans game, too.

Remember when I mentioned that the author of that cover piece for the Weekly Standard was a Democrat staffer?

You know who didn't mention that fact? The author herself -- and neither did the Weekly Standard.

In the author's tag to her story Doss describes herself in part as former "senior minority counsel for the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence." In relevant part this is the same tag she used to describe herself in the Atlantic version of her piece.

Without more, we wouldn’t know whether she served as the Democrats' or Republicans' counsel. One has to go to her current law firm bio to determine that she served as Democratic counsel, of course, and that her efforts included (my italics) "all facets of the SSCI investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 U.S. elections." Why so shy?

I think it is indicative of her lack of candor in the crux of her cover story. Doss is dishonest by the omission of relevant factual context in the same manner as she is in her own author's identification.

Powerline blames the author of the piece for this clear dishonesty there. But he doesn't blame the Weekly Standard which, he confesses, he has (or had) a longstanding admiration for, having written there 25 times or more.

But let's ask the question: Why did the Weekly Standard's editors permit this dishonesty? Why didn't they suggest she clearly identify her partisan affiliation, surely a relevant piece of information a reader would find useful in evaluating her claims?

Why didn't they insist on it? Why didn't they add it in themselves?

The question more or less answers itself. The Weekly Standard didn't identify the Democrat affiliation of its new cover story writer for the same reason it doesn't honestly identify its own "evolving" affiliation: Because partisan attacks have more impact when they're perceived as coming from one's own side.

10 Will and Brooks supported obama.

Maybe they denied that, (while wiping their chins of cum and giggling girlishly,) but it was pretty clear at the time.

They claimed it was all about "healing" from all the "oppression". And the trousers. And maybe the cock in their mouths.

12 If you were an anti-Semite, pointing out that The Weekly Standard and Ben Shapiro are held up as the Arbiters of Conservatism would be a fantastic way to start "asking questions."

This is not a new debate, and was in fact raging during the election. I have grudging, small respect for Moe Lane when he burned his entire political career rather than be a fake. But why is this tiny fringe being held out as True Conservatism, even as Deep State censors get to work on Twitter, Youtube, and Facebook?

Some really awful people are going to become very persuasive to less aware people if this keeps up.

I know they claim to oppose Trump "on principle," but what are the ostensible principles here that have been abandoned by Trump Republicans that they are so jealously guarding.

I know they're hollow, core-less men, but where's the fig leaf that allows them to deny it?

Shredded. There's a reason secular New York elites don't try to couch this as conservative thinking, not when the President has either delivered in spades or discarded the flawed logic. The only policy question I would hit him on is the omnibus, but even that should be properly called a Congressional scan.

Even the Judeo-Christianity some conservatives cling to is pure fakery: President Trump has aided Israel above and beyond any President but particularly the Dogeater. So it's hardly some Jewish conspiracy. What, then, accounts for this hatred? And please, Bill Clinton was a hamburger scarfing rapist perjurer, so don't say "tone."

27 And here we see a pod of Cuckservatives, very rare to see them in the wild. As a species threatened by encroachment upon their natural habitat of bars, restaurants, think-tanks, foundations, and television studios, by the more prolific Leftwingers, or Moonbatus Barkus, they become fewer with each year. Soon their distinctive, plaintive wail of 'But Trump!' and 'Muh Principles!' will only be heard in recordings. Sad fate, but nature is a cruelly neutral mother when it comes to the survival of her offspring.

We tried with the Tea Party, we've tried with Trump, and though he's fighting the good fight and putting up a Herculean effort, their are too many forces arrayed against him and we the people.

Even if we got some miracle and Trump serves 8 years, there is simply no one on the scene that can pick up the mantle.

72 When I read these stories I picture a sole individual feverishly loading bullets into the revolver and trying to point it in their face a quickly as possible.
The more factions the left has, the much better off the country will be.
As the mid-terms fast approach, Mueller completely empty handed, Judge Ellis presiding over the "collusion" case (to which he has already ripped the prosecutors a new asshole a month ago about knowing exactly what they are doing to Manafort and why), Trump seemingly knowing every move to make, and the left holding up a giant neon sign that reads: "We are violent, crazy assholes!" along with the media now 100% sans mask, it is very clear to me that barring any catastrophic revelation of this "collusion", 2018 and 2020 will bring nothing but more pain and suffering to the left.

It is no accident that he hasn't declassified the FISA pages. Team Mueller understand that Trump knows more than they do, has more power than they do and completely grasps the fact that Muellers job is to somehow take him down without exposing the deep state plan. This plan of course (RE insurance policy) was not supposed to be this difficult for the deep state. I would be willing to bet that after being entrenched in such an elitist world of untouchables, some very careless mistakes were made in this attempted coup.

PDT wasn't supposed to happen.

Now Mueller has to navigate his own minefield. Not knowing if PDT knows the whole picture which makes it excruciatingly tough to actually declare anything. Hence the begging for an interview, stromy daniels, "indictments" of Russian military members (LOL).. Not a single solid FACT is on his side. All he is now is a magician on stage that was supposed to wrap his act up and running out of rabbits.

Another lie. #NeverTrump would be perfectly fine with a democratic socialist or, to hearken to their historic origins, an outright Trotskyite as long as that president left the borders wide open and engaged in needless, profitable warfare that didn't benefit the United States.

They are frauds, they are powerless and they are no longer even dangerous. Their communist overlords will kick them to the curb quite soon. In the meantime, they can play the role of the Social Revolutionaries as the loyal and symbolic opposition to the Communist Party. That got boring soon enough in the Soviet Union, too.

I have to disagree about opportunities being squandered at this stage. Trump has 6.5 more years he can be in office. The way I see it, he has already changed politics for quite some time, and he has a long political time to continue changing it, especially as to how much influence the MFM has.

I don't see another Billionaire self funding Conservative on the horizon yet either, but I'd be willing to bet that the Trump family's influence on politics will not come to an abrupt end when he leaves office, including financing the right candidates.

Think about it. If someone said you're a drug dealer, or a child pornographer, would you say "I don't want to talk about it?" WTF? Who would do that, except as a subterfuge?

Whenever someone says he's a "democratic socialist," put the truth to him: "So you're a Communist, then?"

When he cavils - which he will - ask him how he differs in his policy proposals from, say, the revolutionary communists.

Answer: he doesn't. He believes in exactly the same policies, just putatively implement by the ballot box, not by terror.

OK. Sure. If I were a communist, I'd be embarrassed too.

131 I get why you're so upset with the Weekly Standard. I am, too. I used to like a lot of their content, especially that of Philip Terzian. I am also alarmed at Bill Kristol's tone the last 2+ years, and Jonathan Last is just a tool.

But I think the implication that Powerline is not to be taken seriously because they only condemned Doss and not the Weekly Standard is unfair. Powerline is three lawyers and a college professor, and by my estimation, the only one displaying true cuckishness is Paul Mirengoff, and his pearl-clutching appeals to movement conservatives are generally met with scorn. Hayward at least has an open mind and despises the Dems. John Hinderaker is pro-Trump, and Scott Johnson is too, in a more muted and careful way. I think he's getting used to the new normal.

They're lawyers, and they've made their money. I don't think they're worried about cutting ties with the Standard over future earnings; I think they want to speak to conservatives like me, who will still read an article on that site, while giving no time to Kristol or Last. Powerline is still the site it was when it took down Dan Rather. See their articles about Ellison and Illhan Omar for proof.

But even if the GOP does throw the House election, and they would love to, I am certain the President will not shrug and meekly accept impeachment.

Do they honestly believe that Trump's supporters, both the long-term ones and the once-reluctant latecomers who are now really impressed to see actual results for once, will just bow their heads and meekly get back in line to vote for more of that ineffectual fake-conservative Failure Theatre?

Coincidence? I'm kinda thinking not.

Anyway! The long-term result of the #NeverTrumpers taking back the GOP would more likely be an empty shell of a party that suddenly starts losing everything at every level, because too many Trump supporters will just straight-up stop supporting it in any way, and thus ceases to be of any use to the Democrats and their mouthpieces in the Fake News Media.

189 Re Derbyshire, from Gawker (I won't link):

Yesterday political web magazine Taki's Magazine published a stunning work of overt racism by John Derbyshire, a man so racist (and sexist) that even his colleagues at the National Review think he sucks. In Taki, Derbyshire offers the "nonblack version" of "the talk" that some black parents say they give to their children, warning them how to survive in a racist world.

Derbyshire's "talk" is a bullet-point list of every racist thought he's ever had about how dumb and dangerous black people are. Come, bear witness to the hideous monstrosity that is John Derbyshire's deeply racist mind:

How much would I love to transport the entire staff of Gawker to Compton on a hot Friday night, preferably right after the EBT cards were topped up, and to drop them off there for a crash course in racial relations?

190 Liberalism is entirely predicated on superciliousness; on the notion that THEY are better at running your life - your finances, your charitable giving, everything - than you are. Whenever I come across elitist rhetoric, I always think that they are a Donkey-in-Waiting, if not already an admitted Ass.

When Barnes and Cap'n Bill (before he got that snazzy whistle from a Cracker Jack box), used to be on Brit's show, Kristol started giving me the heebie-geebies with the way he would present his point; the slight tilt up and to the side as he spoke, the practiced cadence, as if he was speaking to a 5th grader about something of great import - and I wondered whether he was a Republican of convenience. As Ace points out, there are pesos in being the enemy (or in his case, enema) within.

The 'come to their senses' thing makes me want to beat Boot, Kristol, Rubin and the rest of them with frozen hotdogs until THEY come to their senses. Do they actually THINK we believe that's what they care about?! That their energetic embracing of illegal immigration, authoritarianism and persecution of PDT come from some shining principle that we are not fit to polish?
Abso-fucking-lutely not. Their motivations are entirely self serving and hubris bloating. Fuck them and their superior nonsense, as if they OWN the party and direction, merely because they sit in a chair and get pancake makeup before going in front of a camera. Ace, Schlichter, Ramirez have more integrity and common fucking sense than Cap'n Bill's entire cabana boy battalion combined.

Didn't Jordan want to be Speaker after Boehner announced he was stepping down? I swear I recall that. But once McCarthy bowed out for whatever reason, they basically refused to allow a vote for the new Speaker even though their were people willing to do the job until the GOPe turds could have Ryan.

Shultz strikes me as an almost central-casting clueless well-meaning unworldly business guy who had success. His company's hilariously ridiculous crap strongly suggests this ("talk about race" and before that "create magical jobs somehow during the O-recession" and then their bumbling idiocy with the stupid Phila "racial" thing).

He will say things that appeal only to similar suburban airheads (on public policy and society), pretty much the old "soccer mom" demo. He'd get nowhere in a primary season for either party.

And Schmidt still owes me a cigar, though I don't plan to collect.

IQ isn't everything, and it doesn't diminish their worth as people. But it's still something that any rational person in today's world needs to be able to take into account.

That tells me how fractured the Republicans were back then, and how dispiriting it was for many of them to face Obama and his MSM lackeys.

If they have a real fire-eater eager for the job who can get the votes, then that tells me that Trump has changed the morale of the place in ways none of us actually expected.

If we are merely one more animal among animals, what right have we to assign ourselves any more worth than the apes, or the mice? What right has Charlie Gordon to think himself more valuable than Algernon, if he can't even solve Algernon's maze?

Bio-"ethicist" Peter Singer says "None." We have no such right. This is why, he tells us, you will not find his signature on "The Humanist Manifesto." Despite their scientific pretensions, he writes, humanists prove themselves still infected by this most central of Christian dogmas: speciesism.

It is not logic that moves us to say we would rescue one child over 500 pigs in a burning building, if our noble aim is to minimize the suffering of conscious beings. It is the pure animal instinct to preserve our own, an instinct that should be overridden for the greater good, if necessary.

294 I see five worst-case scenarios.

Least worst: The NeverTrumpers succeed in denying Trump re-election. This results in the hollowing of the GOP nationwide, and very likely the rise of a third party--one whose values are not quite as pleasant as we would prefer. I have warned of this in the past.

Next worst: Attempted impeachment (failure). An emboldened and angered Trump will proceed to clean house and retaliate, accelerating the current political disintegration.

Middle worst: A successful impeachment, or an outright open coup (not the current slow-motion one). The nation splits down the middle on legitimacy. This is the result most likely to divide the country two ways a la People's Republic.

Next to worst: Failed assassination attempt, especially one that harms his family. Trump's (and his supporters') vengeance will know no bounds; I cannot expect the result would be desirable.

Worst: Successful assassination. This would mark the beginning of the American Troubles, and the dissolution of America a la Yugoslavia.

Entering or staying in the country illegally is not immigration. Period.

Legal immigration is currently completely divorced from common sense, national needs, AND national values. Trump favors fixing all of these problems.

Well, all but "national needs". The undeniable reality is the US doesn't "need" even a single immigrant. It might "choose" to have some, but "need" has nothing to do with it.

The current Dems in their madness now vigorously support destroying the rule of law (at all levels, apparently, given their jaw-dropping indifference to the mega-scandals of the Obama crew), destroying freedom, including economic freedom. A Dem US would be one far fewer immigrants would want to join. So, joining the Dems is not "pro-immigrant" in any serious sense of the term.

You watch, he'll run...but not in a primary, but rather in the general so he can really fuck over the Republicans and then promote himself as the guy to rebuild us from the ashes....which was his hope in 2016, that Trump would so thoroughly damage the brand, and that people would see conservatives like Cruz as unable to win that we'd welcome him as savior.

366 free trade scum always had the money not the votes. they bought nomination dole, dubya, mccain and romney. and thought they could buy it for jeb. however trump was no underfunded buchanan or ron paul. democrat party donor class clintonistas vs base sandernistas. donor class wants democrats to act like moderate republicans so moderate republicans are attracted to it. the blacks and browns will decide if they want clinton clone or sanders clone. this is already happening in marland governors race. and alexandra ocasio-cortez obama in waiting.

371 The only way to reaaaallllyyy get Trump back is to return back to the home party of Reagan... the socialists party!

I'll give them this - the Nevertrumpers would fit right in with the stupidity that oozes from these people... but as Sean Davis said - you don't get on TV as "democrat" when you want to lie about Trump... it's much better to be "concerned republican" when they bring you on to talk about why tax cuts are a bad thing when Trump does it.
