Donald Trump: I Might Just Shut Down the Government if I Don't Get Funding for the Wall, an End to Catch and Release, an End to Sanctuary Cities, and a Change to Merit-Based Immigration

The obvious first take is that this is dangerous, people who shut down the government always lose in the court of public opinion, etc.

However, this is an interesting little dynamic. Republicans always lose to Democrats on shutdowns.

But what about a Republican president versus a Republican Congress? While Trump names "Democrats" here, it is in fact weak-sister Republicans in the House and especially the Senate who resist these measures while conning their voters into believing they actually support them.

Maybe it's time for this, and see if congressional Republicans can be bullied by the threat of a shutdown by a Republican President just like they always allow themselves to be bullied by the same threat when offered by Democrats.

If Trump has listened to everyone who told him not to do dangerous things, he wouldn't be president. That doesn't mean he shouldn't do crazy stuff, but I suspect he's gamed this out and thinks he can win. He might well be right. This seems like an opportune time to ride the wave he started.

That gets repeated a lot without any evidence, whatsoever. It's like the GOP who were scared that impeaching was a deeath sentence for them and how terrible it was when they impeached Clinton ... they lost a seat or two in the Senate the next midterm - the horror! - and had majorities in the Senate, the House and held the Presidency in the next election.

Trump knows what the real story is with "government shutdowns".

38 Given that every single "government shutdown" in my lifetime has been both:
1) Not a shutdown
2) A nothingburger
I say go for it.

The absurdity of the "shutdown" is so great that my mother added it to the "list of words that must not be uttered in her home" (yes, the list exists - and this phrase is on it because the government doesn't actually shut down). Vital stuff keeps going, the rabble get furloughed. It might be interesting to see one play out over, say, six months. I suspect things would be okay.

Scenario 1: The GOPe in Congress pre-emptively surrenders (shocking, right?) just on Trump's threat.

Either of these makes threatening a shutdown a good gamble. It's called 'preparing the field' before a battle.

++++++++
Maybe. They might pull out the stops this time and close down things people actually like in order to stick a needle into Trump. In a city here in CO (Colorado Springs, I think), they decided to suspend garbage collection during a budget/tax dispute. There are a ton of things they could have suspended and no one would care, but that didn't fit their objectives.
This time, in the absence of Official Opposition (there is only real opposition now), I think they'll pull out the real knives and attack things people care about.

Interesting tactic.

Posted by: antisocial justice beatnik at July 30, 2018 05:50 PM (NL6wI)

The only thing about signing that CR that makes any sense was him setting up the Dems on immigration right before the election. His EO ending the family separations supports that theory. The Dems never expected him to do that and it kneecapped their only political ploy.

Posted by: Brian in New Orleans at July 30, 2018 05:52 PM (UBzPO)

101 Scenario 2: The Dems' hair bursts into flames and they run around
shrieking like lunatics (shocking, right?) just on Trump's threat. This
galvanizes Trump's base, and amps GOTV efforts for the midterm.

You have to wonder, though, whether we're approaching an asymptote on the Dem crazy? I mean, if someone hasn't concluded they're bugf*** nuts by now, it's unlikely they will. Still, I suppose maintenance and reinforcement of the lesson is a good idea.

This is not the culmination of his entire life, this is what he did because he thought he could do good for the country. Legacy schmegacy.

206 I mentioned on a previous thread that when the government shuts down, the funds are not available for guaranteeing or insuring FHA or VA loans. Some lenders stick their necks out and close anyway, but a lot do not. If the government does shut down, it would be great to make provisions for this ahead of time because needless to say people get very angry when they cannot close of their homes. It would be good to find a way to take that out of the government shutdown equation.

238 I don't buy the "conventional wisdom" that Republicans always lose public opinion on government shutdowns. The GOP "gained" seats in a mid-term after the last one. The media and the GOPe want to pretend that the shutdown played bad for Ted Cruz and others, but the reality is that most people don't care one way or the other and the majority of people who do care were in favor of the shutdown. The only people who didn't like the shutdown were the DC types who began to realize that they matter a lot less than they thought.

Shut. It. Down.

258 Don Q,
having been in the mortgage business for 35 years, I am positive that when there are no funds to guarantee the VA loans, lenders are afraid to close. Only recently in the last few years lenders have stuck their necks out and closed loans, but would not continue for a long period of time. Once the loan closes, if it cannot be guaranteed and the borrower goes delinquent, the lender is stuck with the loan and no VA guarantee

266 Moreover... the Republicans are, in a way worse than the Democrats.

No, they don't share the *most* evil goals of the Dems. But the majority of goals *are* shared, and their pretty danged evil - mainly the maintenance of the status quo, where they enjoy wealth, power, and privilege without regard to, and at the expense of the voters they "serve."

Where they cross the line into being uniquely horrible is this: both factions of the Party of know that we don't want this shit. We don't want their new Mexican demographic, or their entitlement state, or their stupendous spending, and on and on.

So, the Republicans play the "face" to the Democrat "heel" in this kayfabe, and simply pretend to oppose those things during elections, so the peasants don't get too restless as we're inevitably, once again, fucked blind by the Party.

They're using our better angels against us.

306 There comes a time where the issue is so important that the gubmint needs to be shut down. Enforcement of our borders and tightening immigration is that issue. I have no problem 'shutting down' the government for at least two reasons:
1) Most of the 'essential services' will still run. I forget the percentage from last time, but it is ridiculously high. I hope PDT shuts shuts down more departments, actually.
2) As someone mentioned above, most of the services do not affect everyday Americans.

The biggest screaming will probably come from those receiving transfer payments, like welfare, social security (if that is actually delayed), etc. In the long term, what would probably be a temporary, scary disruption to these people might be beneficial, IF the following lesson would be learned: WHAT THE GOVERNMENT GIVES, THE GOVERNMENT CAN TAKE AWAY. I would hope that that is the message that is received.

Serious question: Soros is a foreign national. He is using a huge amount of money to alter US and local elections. Why is this POS not arrested and brought to America for trial?

Soros is doing a hundred times what Russia is doing to mess with our elections. Jail the bastard.

IIRC, Soros is now an American citizen. Having said that, as a Nazi collaborator, why isn't he stripped of his citizenship and sent back to Hungary to face the music?

325 It's interesting that Stacey Abrams, the Great Black Hope for GA gov. (vagina--extra points) wants to ban the use of law enforcement to aid ICE.

Atlanta is ground zero for human trafficking and MS-13 gangs and drugs.

She's got Soros money funding her and The Beast's support.

The irony of a black woman promoting human trafficking is staggering.

But, OTOH, if the Beast supports her, she's in trouble. If Obongo supports her, she's definitely toast.

326 I say shut it down and see if anyone notices.
