I didn't get, from the Peterson article, exactly how our "our love for male genius" hurts English and history classes. Exactly what were Shakespeare and Alexander, to name just two. For every Austin or Jeanne D'Arc there must have been twenty of the XY sort. (Admittedly, I didn't take art classes. But somehow I kind of got the impression that Rembrandt and El Greco were, let's just say "toxic".)

Not sure which is the better feel good story of the day. Probably the guy who walked nearly 15 miles to get to his first day of work, but the child molester getting his just desserts is perfectly timed.
In December, a young girl, 3 years old, went "missing" from her mother's trailer a scant 1/2 mile from my house. Law enforcement all around the neighborhood, Marine helicopters from nearby New River Air Station flying low and slow over the house and the whole neighborhood scanning the woods in vain for a tiny, crippled little girl. For a week, the town was in rapt attention of this little drama that played out. For me, it played out in front of me and the family. All day, all night cop cars moving in or out in a hurry, sometimes blaring sirens. By Friday, the Sheriff finally allowed the public to join the search. So there I was, at 0730, mustered up and off to a 7 hour day of beating brush with over 700 other folks, with over 100 turned away because there weren't enough Search and Rescue or Law Enforcement personnel to lead them. It is wrong, but I hope that Earl Kimrey's stay in real PITA prison is as short as the child molester in the links. Hopefully, little Mariah's mom joins her abusive, murderer boyfriend in prison soon also. @65 - I read the Mueller indictment today.
In it, the DoJ revealed that we hacked the Russians. So, when it was released, the Russians knew we hacked them. I don't believe the SC would have released that info just prior to Trump meeting Putin without Trump having been briefed on it. I mean, imagine going in to scold Putin about hacking the US when he would turn right around and say "well you hacked us." There is a lot more going on. Has to be. We did get a visit on that Monday morning, asking if we saw her. A neighbor and I scared up a few deer from the woods behind our homes but no little girl. Cops knew she was dead from Monday, but did a nice job of keeping that quiet until after the public search on Friday. Still cannot fathom why the mother is free. I have a pretty good sized house, well constructed, but if there was somebody getting abused there is no place in the house that it wouldn't be heard. These people lived in a single wide trailer barely 800 square feet. No way she didn't know what was happening and probably took part. On a related subject, I think it should be protocol that law enforcement, if they hear "Allahu akbar" when there is some violent incident, should shoot to kill. If any home owner or proprietor is faced with an assailant, they should not aim to disable, but to kill. There are just certain crimes that given today's culture, are not processed properly via the justice system. They need to be dealt with by up front execution, or in prison execution. And we know a guy that got busted for sneaking in and having sex with a 12 year old girl. He was 19 and she didn't tell him. They were still together, so we heard her side of the story and it sound legit. Of course, he gets to register as a sex offender the rest of his life and she left him after the two of them got busted for some minor traffic stuff. He's been in six months and due to get out in August.
It's a touching like father like son story as his dad was busted for touching a fully clothed 15 year old on the breast when he was 19. It was a misdemeanor and he did community service. He also got to register as a sex offender the rest of his life. We talked to the prosecutor of the case that had no idea that it would screw up his life like that. Some sex offenders deserve hell. Hilarity Alert!
Portland is a very left-wing city. Professional soccer in the US is very left-wing. Put the two together, and you have the Portland Timbers, which is the most overtly left-wing team that I have seen in any professional sport. Fans at Timbers' games regularly unfurl large banners (called "tifos") supporting illegal immigration and other left-wing political causes, and the Timbers have already announced its opposition to a November ballot measure that would repeal Oregon's sanctuary state status. So what did the Timbers do today? The Portland Timbers have filed a formal protest over their 3-2 loss to LAFC in the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles Wednesday. The protest stems from the fact that LAFC appears to have broken U.S. Open Cup rules by fielding six foreign players during the game. That's right - the "US Open cup" has a limit on the number of foreign players, and the Timbers are demanding that the other team prove that a sufficient number of the other team's players are US citizens or have green cards. When it's the Timbers' ox being gored, then asking for proof of immigration status is perfectly OK. Otherwise, "no person is illegal". Posted by: Whatever... at July 19, 2018 09:57 PM (dlwIY) 153

The America hating shit show which is the NFL continues on and on...
NFL, NFLPA Issue Statement On National Anthem July 19th, 2018 at 8:48pm CST by Dallas Robinson This is breaking news. https://bit.ly/2JEuX7M The NFL and the NFL Players Association have issued a joint statement indicating THE LEAGUE WILL NO LONGER ENFORCE THE NATIONAL ANTHEM PROTEST POLICY INTRODUCED IN MAY. WHICH REQUIRED ALL LEAGUE PERSONNEL TO "STAND AND SHOW RESPECT FOR THE FLAG AND THE ANTHEM." "The NFL and NFLPA, through recent discussions, have been working on a resolution to the anthem issue. In order to allow this constructive dialogue to continue, we have come to a standstill on the NFLPA's grievance and on the NFL's anthem policy. No new rules relating to the anthem will be issued or enforced for the next several weeks while the confidential discussions are ongoing." #BoycottNFL Posted by: Trigger Warning at July 19, 2018 10:15 PM (YRXy3) 194

If I'm wrong and Mueller is giving the Podestas a pass for the exact same crimes Manafort is being prosecuted over, it might give President Trump ammo to dissolve the entire judiciary. I thought I was "good" once. Wife, family, career, house ...
All the things that make for "goodness". But then I learned. No, I was taught. In TSOHK. All the "good ones". Despite their personal marketing campaigns. The "loving ones". The "faithful ones". The "devoted" ones. The "pious" ones. All were bad. All the "I love yous" in the world add up to exactly nothing. All had a price. A remarkably low price. And the loudest proclaimers of "goodness" were the worst. The "I will pray for yous" and the "God loves you anyways". The. Worst. All of "good" humanity are one failure, one betrayal, one crushing disappointment, one incident, one missed chance from being totally evil. Corrupted to the bone. The honest ones admit it. The dishonest lecture the remainder. The resulting hate is a powerful drug. And even inspirational in it's own way. And frankly, strangely enjoyable, when you quit fighting the truth of it. And, Jim, if you are out there, today I sawed a board with my rescued-from-the-dump Rockwell Beaver nine-inch table saw. Spent the last few days building a stand for it, and equipping the stand with wheels and handles so it could be trundled around easily.
Today I welded up a motor bracket, and hung a 1.5 horse electric motor on it (thought I was getting a half-horse, oh, weeell). Hooked up a power cord to the motor, and the blade ran backwards. Fortunately, it's a reversible motor, and works on either 120 or 240 volts, so I swapped the wires, and it ran forward. Got it running, and made a short diagonal cut through the end of a 2X4. First sawdust! With a dull, old blade at that. I do have new one to install. I am going to have get a shorter belt. Current one, which was best pick from my stock of used ones, is a tad long. Also, I am going to wire it for 240 circuit. Motor is rated at 14 amps on 120 volts, and that is too close to 15 amps standard breaker for comfort. OK not sure if the "I'm filled with hate now" thing is true or satire or just poop stirring but...
The entire story and point of Christianity is that we're all sinners in the hands of an angry God, a loathsome spider suspended over eternal damnation by a thread. That we're innately sinful by nature, that we're as awful as God will let us get away with, and if we are totally honest, admit that even in our best moments, we're bad people at the same time. Its a constant struggle against our sinful nature, one which some of us never even engage in, reveling in our sin and filth. Sometimes, all of us let go like that for at least a short time. I know I have, to my eternal shame and despair. Most days I live knojwing God is real the Bible is true, and Jesus' salvation is there, but I won't make it. I feel I'll be turned away at the door. Remember this? When you said "f*ck God, I'm doing this instead?" You burn. The problem is we look around us and people seem to be outwardly decent "he's a good man" because of following certain rules or doing certain things the 'right' way. But we're not. We're all lost and hopeless, all hellbound, all steeped in sin. Finding out that people really honestly are like that isn't some proof faith is a lie and goodness is fake. Its proof we need a saviour. The whole Bible is about that. Remember King David? The man after God's own heart? Who fell in lust with that hot wife of a man, send the guy to die, and took her into his house? Remember Peter, the rock on whom the church is built? Who denied Christ over and over again? Remember Paul, the greatest apostle, the theologian and philosopher, who murdered Christians and spent all his efforts persecuting them? We're all deep down lost and an honest look in the mirror ends up with us admitting we have it coming. It is only by the grace of God, the doing and dying of Jesus Christ, and the work of the Holy Spirit to apply His perfection in our place that we have any hope at all. Yeah, people are jerks, people are hypocrites, people are awful, people are sinners. People betray us, hurt us, laugh at our pain. The people we should be able to trust most, let us down. We know this in life. God... never does. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at July 19, 2018 11:49 PM (39g3+) 434

What made Seinfeld unique?
Audry Spade, Writer Answered 9h ago I grew up watching Seinfeld, and to this day my favorite episode is the one where Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer wander around a multi-level parking garage outside of a shopping mall in search of Kramer’s car for the whole episode. That's literally the entire premise - four friends grow increasingly stressed out as they search for their car in a parking garage in New Jersey. What makes the episode great is that each character has something stupid going on simultaneously that becomes disastrously inconvenient due to their collective inability to remember where they parked. Kramer is lugging around the new air conditioner he just bought, which is the whole reason the four of them are even at the shopping mall to begin with. Jerry has to pee really bad, but refuses to just go ahead and do so outside because he is a neat freak/germaphobe. George is supposed to be meeting his parents for dinner at 6:15 and is afraid he will be late. Meanwhile, Elaine is carrying a goldfish around in a clear plastic bag, mildly concerned that it might die in the tiny airtight space before she is able to get it home. As the episode wears on, Kramer grows exhausted from hefting the air conditioner around, so he decides to abandon it behind a random car and just memorize the parking space number instead so he can come back for it later. Elaine is begging strangers going by in cars to give them a ride around the building so they can find their car and finally go home, but no one seems interested or has sympathy for the goldfish. Meanwhile, Kramer is busy trying to talk Jerry into peeing in a dark corner where no one can see him, which Jerry eventually does only to be caught by a security guard who doesn't believe his cover story that he suffers from a fictional medical condition called "uromysitisis." While Jerry is in the security guard's office, Elaine, George, and Kramer wonder if he got lost after peeing since he still hasn't returned, a plot twist which George says in annoyance is "like a science fiction story." Elaine decides to branch off on her own to search for Jerry, leaving Kramer and George together with George now having to pee. Kramer also convinces George to pee in a corner, and George gets caught in the act by the same security guard that busted Jerry. After being fined and released, Jerry and George meet back up with Elaine in the parking garage, and Jerry persuades George to ask an attractive woman for a ride around the building. The woman quickly agrees, only to kick all of them back out of her car seconds later in response to something George says that makes her mad. The exact thing George said to the woman is never directly revealed to the audience, but we know it involves L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology. Fortunately, the woman drops them off right beside Kramer's car. Unfortunately, Kramer is still lost, having become completely separated from everybody else when George got arrested for urinating in public. Kramer has the car keys on him, wherever he is inside the enormous parking garage at this point. Consequently, Jerry, George, and Elaine are forced to spend the next few hours waiting at the locked car for Kramer to turn back up. By the end of the episode, when at last they are all back in Kramer's car, Jerry and George both have citations for urinating in public, George has completely missed his parents’ anniversary dinner, Elaine's goldfish is dead, and Kramer can't remember where he left the air conditioner they came to the mall for, thus defeating the purpose for the whole trip. To top it all off - and this is really where the episode closely parallels my own life with my shit lousy luck - just as they're finally leaving, Kramer's car won't start. Seinfeld first aired in 1989, and unlike many of the sitcoms of its time, it wasn't centered around family life and didn't include children in any capacity. The thing that was great about Seinfeld was its rich lack of political correctness, emotional sway, and connected plot. Disasters repeatedly befall the four friends, but to us they are only funny, never tragic, and by the next episode we’ve moved on. To quote Larry David, there was "no hugging and no learning" in Seinfeld. The characters, though friends, are never mushy-gushy towards one another. Unlike primetime TV's colossal smash hit Friends, which was more like a soap opera with humorous elements, the characters in Seinfeld appear almost sociopathic, often senselessly jilting one another and unerringly succumbing to the worst in themselves. Though Jerry and Elaine make repeated references throughout the series to a past romance they once shared, their history doesn't necessarily add anything to any of the episodes. In fact, both Jerry and Elaine often mention their past relationship when mutually meeting someone for the first time, but the person they're meeting either doesn't care at all or feels mildly uncomfortable and put off by the irrelevance of the information. No other show was doing anything like this in the early 90s. Where the other sitcoms of the day unerringly seemed to employ vomit-inducing morality lessons and cheap plot twists to keep viewers (small children?) tuning in week after week, Seinfeld alone managed to circumvent all that hoity-toity, scrubbed-clean happy horseshit. This, in turn, only served to endear the show's (adult) audiences - and me, growing up. Posted by: qdpsteve at July 19, 2018 11:59 PM (km8m2) 467

Posted by: Captain Josepha Sabin -- formerly Deplorable Lady with Only Two Deplorable Cats at July 20, 2018 12:06 AM (luqzw) Back when Mad was just one of the EC Comics, it wasn't doing too well initially and most publishers would have axed it after the first issue to two. Bill Gaines, OTOH, took the position that just as long as the company overall made a profit, that he'd publish stuff that he liked even if that individual title didn't do so well. Mad was also, for the longest time, the only publication aside from Consumer Review that never had (actual) advertisements in order to be free to lampoon anyone and everyone they wanted. We also have to thank them for being the foremost 1st Amendment advocates of their day. They did a parody of "Sing Along With Mad" where they printed parody lyrics and mentioned that they were set to the tune of an actual song. A copyright lawsuit (Irving Berlin et al. v. E.C. Publications, Inc.) was filed against them, and Mad mostly prevailed; however, the other side pushed it to the the Circuit Court where they completely sided with Mad, thus establishing once and for all that parody was fully protected under the 1st Amendment since SCOTUS turned down the appeal. Please do not think the following is any kind of life style lecture. I believe I pulled out so quickly and easily because I go to the Y three or four times a week and do about a one hour deep water aquatic routine. I drove the rehab people nuts because I refused to slow down. Finally, they would just tell me what to do, then go catch up with their paper work. As I was doing my rehab exercises, I'd look around and realize how very lucky I was. I wasn't coming back from a knee or hip surgery, and I was the youngest patient there. (I was 66 at the time.) All I really needed to do was remind my body what it was supposed to do, not teach it something entirely new. Seinfeld is a sort of comedic philosopher, he thinks about what makes things funny and why and how to craft that and what works and how to take that apart and make sense of it all. Forgot to add, made a real nice score at "the mall" today. Two yuuuge pressure gauges, each 0 - 300 psi, with ten-inch dials. In black Bakelite housings meant for surface mount on a wall. Both brand new in box; still have a little patch of foam under the butt ends of the pointers to protect the movement during shipping.

Hearing thunder around now, and lightning static on the computer speakers. I just unplugged the wire leading from the speaker jack to the stereo in the shop. I fixed a machine today that was less than a year old.---
Not the same exactly. But a machine we use daily failed and a replacement machine would take 4 months to be delivered. I took ours apart. Replaced a bearing with the wrong type to get us by because of cost. I kinda felt bad doing it since I knew the "right way to fix it". But for the company it made more sense. A thrust bearing cost 5 times what a normal bearing would which would limp it through until the new machine showed up. Posted by: X-ray at July 20, 2018 01:24 AM (YdakM) 605

Does your dad's room have a window to the yard? If so, get a few bird feeders with a few types of feed & set them up in the yard. Give your dad a pair of binoculars (just small ones, easier to handle) & a field guide to the local birds. See who drops by.

Just found this at Quora too:
Why do you eat meat without remorse? by Chris Bast Answered 30m ago Oh, I don't just eat meat without remorse. I eat it with glee. I looove me some meat. If animals didn't want to be eaten they shouldn't have evolved to be so delicious. It's their own fault, really. Seriously though, why the fuck should I feel remorse? I am a predator from a predator species. I am biologically programmed to desire meat. Do you ask the lion why it eats meat without remorse? Or the wolf? Or the bear? Or the other great apes around the world that also eat meat, just like humans do? No, of course you don't. Only humans have to put up with this self-righteous bullshit argument that we should feel bad about killing and eating other animals. Posted by: qdpsteve at July 20, 2018 01:53 AM (km8m2) 627

When my brother was in hospice at my dad's house (a few hours away), my son lent him his stereo system (high end, diy-built pre-amp, power amp, and speakers). My brother really enjoyed blasting his music... annoyed my sister, though (TS). So if you have a good system, or know someone who does, set it up for your dad (though he might lean more towards Sinatra or Glenn Miller rather than Pink Floyd).

Sucks being 6 hours ahead of EST so I'm late on commenting. Anyway, this observation is very accurate. If you like to torture yourself watching smug lefty webshows (I'm think Sam Seder's "Majority Report" in particular), they attack Peterson all the time. They try to hit him as a faux-intellectual, or that his audience is a bunch of morons enraptured by his simple, racist/sexist/mysogenistic pied-piper call. OK, up there someone mentioned shooting aluminum cans for practice. With a nerf gun. Well, today that can I put on the berm at 50 meters jumped and danced beautifully to the music of the M1 carbine, easily the most fun gun to shoot in my limited experience.
Peep sights, early war style (reproduction AO rifle, my reloads). In two shots, both I and the other RO were hitting 4-inch steel plates at 50 meters. Point being, what a fantastic weapon in the early 1940s. Light (ammo is light, too), completely natural to shoot accurately (esp. for practical accuracy, the only kind that matters in action). -Posted by: The Thankful Hat at July 20, 2018 02:08 AM (itfg0) I'm not quite "white-knuckling" it, but when one can't talk and the other can't listen/remember, you get the frustration of dealing with their interactions. I say, "It's going to be okay" about a hundred times a day. Leaving for work is stressful. I'm going to need someone else here if Mom doesn't improve, but she seems to be able to use more words and a bit more motor skill on a daily basis, so I'm hopeful. Watching their frustration is the most painful thing of all. They were such Capable Americans and never needed outside help. On top of that, the freaking County stopped by for a 'wellness check', a.k.a. "Sticking Their Nose In"-visit. Now... I could charm the pants off a shark, but I am wary of The State even being involved. ...because they're here to help. I've got broad shoulders, but we'll see how far I can carry this. I may need to call for help, eventually. I certainly hope I don't. My Brother stopped by yesterday and today, which gave me a break from cooking, cleaning, etc. God bless him for taking the time he's taking from an hour away. He's a hotel manager and his hours are long and screwy. I got twelve hours of sleep last night and I obviously needed them. I am coordinating with my Bro, so he knows the medications, treatments, exercises, etc. We've also gone over Dad's files and his finances. I think my Brother will have Power of Attorney, as he's smarter than me. Don't get me wrong, I'm no dummy, but he's as practical as me and doesn't have my medical issues. I know he would do a good job. Since they are living with me, I'll take those duties should he say so. The versatility of this plant is unparalleled given how it can be used in so many different ways for survival. If I had to choose only one kind of tree to grow in my backyard this would be it. What is Moringa? The Tree That Every Prepper Should Grow In His Backyard Moringa is a tree that loves arid conditions, and many countries with such climates have been utilizing it for centuries, with great success. It has over 90 nutrients, including 8 essential amino acids that our bodies need but cannot produce on their own. It's like vitamins are growing on this tree - B, B1, B2, B3, D, and E are all represented in large amounts. The Moringa has three times as much iron as spinach, four times the calcium of milk, four times the vitamin A found in carrots and is even higher in vitamin C than oranges! It also contains large amounts of magnesium and phosphorus. Being a powerful superfood, it has now made its way into the lives of many in the northern part of the globe as well. The U.S.A is no exception and the Moringa can be grown outdoors in many southern and western states. For the cooler states a greenhouse in your backyard will do just fine. Or you can grow it indoors. An added benefit you'll probably love about this tree is that pests do not attack it, making it easy to grow year-round with very little expense. --SNIP-- Posted by: RickZ at July 20, 2018 05:21 AM (8lsuS) 689

Debating whether to drop a dime on neighbor with an out of control aggressive dog. I have witnessed it charge and follow a school bus, my car, another neighbors car, a neighbor on bicycle (she has now stopped riding her bike past their house -- something she always did). Yesterday it charged after a brand new 16 year old driver in a Jeep. It also confronts me -- on my own freaking property. It leaves its own property and I have seen it stray at least 500 feet away. Last winter I saw it drop a deuce on my front walkway, 20 feet from my house and 300 feet away from their house. We have a leash law in this town and we are supposed to call, email, or write the SPCA to handle complaints. I keep thinking these people will get a fvcking clue but they don't seem very bright. Dogs that chase are not necessarily dogs that bite/maim/maul.
If the behavior is allowed to persist, however, the hunt becomes the behavior that allows them to go to that next level. Irresponsible owners a problem. People who excite the dogs are also a problem. Not many know, but petting your dog to "calm it down" is the WORST thing you can do. You are reinforcing the behavior, as the dog wants to own the owner. YOU are the owner, master and King of your establishment. A calm dog is a happy dog. There are many mistakes that are commonly made by dog owners. Pampered pooches aren't necessarily bad, but "Baby Voice" and coddling during an out-lash are the worst things you can do for your dog, should they act in a manner you disapprove of. Rewarding a dog for bad behavior in any fashion reinforces the dog's bad behavior.
You were right to stand your ground as most dogs 'display' aggression without actually wanting to attack. Unchecked, this 'display' becomes 'confidence' and the dog will eventually bite someone. I'd be willing to bet a dollar to a donut that they 'roughhouse' with the dog and instigate its behavior. While the dog understands who is King of the Castle inside the house, they think they are doing a good thing by charging or chasing people on a territorial level. This is why I chide people for shit-talking Pit-Bulls, Rottweilers and any other species of dog as inherently 'bad'.
It is NOT the dog. It is the Owner whose ignorance of behavior leads to the dog's eventual actions. Knowing how to play with the dog and making sure it knows who is the Pack Leader is 99% of training. It has nothing to do with "sit", "stay", etc. It is fun to get the dog excited and watch it run around the house. I do this with my dog(s). What people need to know is the proper way to calm the dog down before any other activity begins. When the dog is at a "Level-Ten" excitement is no time to introduce it to other people, not the "Outside World". The dog must reach multiple stages of calm before it is ready to deal with others; including other dogs. This can take up to one-half hour and people don't want to dedicate the time to it. Training a dog is time-intensive and a discipline in patience.
