Charles Krauthammer, RIP

He was 68.

Charles Krauthammer, a longtime Fox News contributor, Pulitzer Prize winner, Harvard-trained psychiatrist and best-selling author who came to be known as the dean of conservative commentators, has died. He was 68.

His death had been expected after he wrote a heartbreaking letter to colleagues, friends and viewers on June 8 that said in part "I have been uncharacteristically silent these past ten months. I had thought that silence would soon be coming to an end, but I'm afraid I must tell you now that fate has decided on a different course for me...

"Recent tests have revealed that the cancer has returned. There was no sign of it as recently as a month ago, which means it is aggressive and spreading rapidly. My doctors tell me their best estimate is that I have only a few weeks left to live. This is the final verdict. My fight is over."

Tucker Carlson was on Fox, praising Krauthammer's spirit. He thought that because Charles Krauthammer faced his own death early in his life -- lying at the bottom of a pool, knowing immediately that he had severed his spine and would drown unless promptly rescued by someone else -- he was liberated from the sort of anger and frustration that consume many other people.

24 I like the Doctor. Did not always agree with him but I liked him. Seemed a good person to hold a conversation with.

I think his earlier profession helped with that. Unlike most of the pundit class he would listen to you say your piece before taking your argument apart.

25 We've all been saying goodbye in the last thread. He was special.

What I'm learning from the retrospective on Fox is how much use he had of his right hand. It seems he managed to control the universe from there.

I like the fact that I didn't know that until now. He was so cool about not letting on.

37 Nothing but good to say about Dr. Krauthammer, especially when I disagreed with him because he wasn't a disagreeable person. As astonishingly minor as it was and is, when Krauthammer became somewhat unhinged during the last Republican primary I wrote a comment to the effect he had lost all perspective for the first time since I've read him but it didn't negate his work. He actually read that comment aloud later on Fox and said it was true. Felt good.

Very interesting, eloquent man. Died that way as well.

Requiem
By Robert Louis Stevenson

Under a wide and starry sky
Dig this grave and let me lie
Gladly did I live
And Gladly die
And I lay be down with a will

These be the words you grave for me
Here he lies where he longed to be
Home is the sailor, home from the sea
And the hunter home from the hill

104 >> I don't know about Krauthammer and Cy Youn

He was big baseball fan -- went to the Nationals games all the time.

They told about he taught he young son, Daniel, how to play baseball. From his wheelchair. He trained his dog to fetch, and had the landscapers cut a diamond in his yard and set up the bases.

Kraut had limited use of his right hand, and, with the aide of this little "flipper" thing, could toss a ball across the plate. So, he taught his little son how to swing. When he'd hit the ball, the dog would fetch it back to Kraut in his chair.

Did Krauthammer and George Will have baseball debates? That would have been interesting.

When Will was hired by Fox to be on the same panel as CK, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. My two heroes on one stage for an intellectual feast! Unfortunately, for some reason it just never seemed to gel. Will became.....erratic, and now CK is gone. Sigh.

110 I remember him talking about his recovery. He would lay in bed and read. The books were placed above him somehow so he could look up and see them. He put up multiple books at once and would read a page from each one before somebody would come and turn the page of every book for him. It's hard enough for me to remember what I read in one book at a time.

116 He was big baseball fan -- went to the Nationals games all the time.

117 you know the old joke about how Alger Hiss gets to the Pearly Gates and is directed to go through that door? So he opens the door and a sudden powerful wind blows him through.
Hiss suddenly finds himself up to his chin in excrement. He wanders around for a while in a daze, finally sees someone else, realizes it's Dean Acheson.
"Dean!" "Hello, Alger," Acheson sadly replies. "This is horrible" Hiss says and Acheson replies, "you think it's bad now, wait till Joe McCarthy comes by in his speedboat!"
We should hope to be able to deal with approaching death as graciously as Dr K did.

Most others were just impostors. Men of the Left posing as men of the old Right for a paycheck.
