Where does the word jerk come form anyway?
Posted by: Cannibal Bob at June 21, 2018 09:59 AM (2CQCl) jerk - "tedious and ineffectual person," 1935, American English carnival slang, of uncertain origin. Perhaps from jerkwater "petty, inferior, insignificant" [Barnhart, OED]; alternatively from, or influenced by, verbal phrase jerk off "masturbate" [Rawson]. The lyric in "Big Rock Candy Mountain," sometimes offered as evidence of earlier use, apparently is "Where they hung the Turk [not jerk] that invented work." I'm thinking it was actually derived somehow from the "soda jerk". Some beta thought working at the soda fountain would get him some action. Unfortunately, his glasses, greasy hair, pimples, corduroy pants, Schwinn bicycle at the age of 18, and lack of understanding of the female hindbrain earned him an unfortunate sobriquet. The acting is superior (if you're into that kind of acting). ========= The unmanly cheating is repugnant. Flopping on the ground, writhing in agony, not getting the call, and then jumping up and running full speed after the ball. Replay shows no contact whatsoever. Its as if they have no concept whatsoever of honor, virtue or manliness. Which I would not object to, if they want to live that way fine, but I do object to showing it on tv so kids watch it and are socialized to think that's the way to behave in life. Posted by: bluebell at June 21, 2018 10:14 AM (rhdgT) No offense to teh laydies, but girls soccer is boring as hell, because they put 22 players on the field, and generally between 19 and 21 of them have no actual skills. They could shave the field to... well, about a quarter of its size, double the number of players, and then maybe... MAYBE it could be interesting. Truthfully, having grown up in a soccer crazy town, going to school with guys who won national championships in college, and had successful pro careers, the game was HARD for me when I was that age, and it was a thrill to be on the field... when the big boys let me. Seriously, at one point in my life, I thought I was the king shit of athletics. Until I got to high school, and tried to compete with the guys who mostly looked like ordinary dudes. I was in Sao Paolo a couple years ago. Turned on the morning news as I was getting dressed and they had a story about a match between two Brazilian club teams.
One player got pissed at the ref for what he thought was a bad call and he took a swing at the ref. Ref pulls out a knife and stabs the player to death. Fans swarm the field, mob the ref, cut his head off and mount it on a spike in the middle of the field. They took that one seriously." I got to go to a pro soccer game in Guadalajara once. It was really quite entertaining live, big bands play constantly, there are dancing girls for the beer distributors with very little on always doing stuff in front of the stands while the game is going on, so it really was a lot of fun. Once in a while you look up and see some guys in the field doing stuff, so it was like going to a major league ball game in that respect. I noted something you don't see here - at the start of the game, the referee was escorted to the middle of the field by 4 armed officers with flak jackets and M-16's. At the end of the game, he stood at the center of the field until the 4 guys with M-16's came out to take him back to his dressing room. That's when you know you're sure not in America anymore. And the bigger the teams, the better, since your village always has at least 20 or 30 kids wandering around with nothing to do but cause trouble. Who cares if anyone scores? The only point is to keep the kids busy enough so that they don't go around starting fires and stealing chickens. Every time I read about Justine Damond's murder, the more incensed I get.
11:40pm Justine told her fiance the police are here. The officers had reported in saying they found nothing and were going to another call. They had to wait for a cyclist before leaving. Then like an apparition Justine shows up. Harrity says he had enough time to pull his weapon out of the holster - remember he is seated and the driver. He next reports the sound of a light bulb dropping to the floor and a flash. Noor had fired. And Justine's last words were either "I'm dead" or "I'm dying." 11:41pm the two officers start performing CPR on Justine. She is pronounced dead ten minutes later. Sony Pictures has released a statement on Peter Fonda, the actor who has sent vile, disturbing threats to women and children associated with the Trump administration.
Sony Pictures Classics, which will be releasing a movie co-starring Fonda in a matter of days, said in a statement sent to The Daily Caller that Fonda's comments were "abhorrent, reckless and dangerous" and that "we condemn them completely." The statement goes on to explain that Fonda has only a "minor role" in the film and the studio will not be pulling it in fairness to the other actors in the ensemble cast. Sony's full statement: "Peter Fonda's comments are abhorrent, reckless and dangerous, and we condemn them completely. It is important to note that Mr. Fonda plays a very minor role in the film. To pull or alter this film at this point would unfairly penalize the filmmaker Shana Feste's accomplishment, the many actors, crew members and other creative talent that worked hard on the project. We plan to open the film as scheduled this weekend, in a limited release of five theaters." - Well, I think I speak for the majority when I say fvck you, Sony, and the industry you rode in on. One more thing about soccer that appeals to leftists. In pro soccer around the world, teams have found that winning is easier if you make the other team fail than if you practice and improve your own level of play. So that means that if your fans mob the opposing team and put a few of their stars in the hospital (or morgue), it helps the home team immensely. I'm conflicted on the sales tax issue - I can't deny that I do most of my shopping online these days. And yet, if I get everything tax free, thus cutting sales tax results, it's going to push States into funding their operations by relying ever more heavily on property taxes and use fees. I live in Texas so thankfully we don't have any State income tax, but that means we lean heavily on Sales Taxes. No Sales Tax, the state has a problem.
And, doing away with the local stores by giving Amazon a tax advantage is much the same thing as killing US employment by giving low cost Chinese factories free access with no tarrifs. It may benefit us in one way, by slightly cheaper prices, but does it really help us if it gets rid of so much of the local employment base? She's doing a fantastic job, along with the SS, with keeping Barron out of the spotlight, while I'm sure he is getting to participate in either summer school events, or other events we don't know about. These things get translated incorrectly as they go down the phone line, like the phone game we played as kids. I would like to know if Fonda actually did receive a visit from SS. Personally, I would have like to have seen charges brought. He was publicly inciting violence against a child and there should be more of a penalty than a crabby statement from his movie producers. A movie from which he will still receive residuals. Posted by: Jen the original at June 21, 2018 11:19 AM (OdLH1) 515

But now, they are domestic traitors, not just appeasing hostile foreign powers, but importing hostile races (and training those races to BE hostile) and destroying us from within."
It may not be much comfort, but realize that they've always been here, and they've always been this bad, and they have always been working towards these ends. It's just that before now they were very good at keeping themselves hidden. Now they've grown confident enough to come out in public and put themselves on full display - just as in the current brouhaha, all of the Dems are now out admitting that they really want completely open borders with no enforcement at all. They used to lie about that, now they are proud of it. It hurts to see, but the fact that we can all now see who they are is what we needed. And if you doubt that this has been going on for a long time - have no doubt that the Barack Obama Presidency was the result of a 40 year long operation to place some of their top operatives at the pinnacle of American power, with the goal of completely destroying this country as an international power. Don't fear the worst - the worst thing that has ever happened to this country already happened, 10 years ago, and somehow we lived through it. Never think of the Obama presidency as being anything other than a treasonous plot intentionally meant to destroy this country. They think they won, that's why they think they can let their masks slip now. But they haven't won, and now we're fighting back. Fighting back is hard. It's always hard. It tears you down and wears you out. It wouldn't be a fight if it didn't - but it's worth it. Posted by: Tom Servo at June 21, 2018 11:28 AM (k1TUh) 557

536 Big decision in Lucia v SEC. SEC administrative law
judges are officers of the United States for the purposes of appointments. That means they have to be appointed by the president and confirmed by the senate. Trump just got a crap-ton of additional judicial appointments to make. I would also say that this calls into question every ALJ in the federal regulatory state, which means that Trump has a SMOD's worth of additional appointments to make. 480 I'm conflicted on the sales tax issue - I can't deny that I do most of my shopping online these days.
I've looked at sales free internet purchases as a fun party that was going to have to come to an end, for the good of all of us. Posted by: Tom Servo at June 21, 2018 11:12 AM (k1TUh) I concur. What was the basis for the SC ruling on sales taxes? There used to be a federal law that prevented this - did Court declare this law unconsitutitonal?
Posted by: SH at June 21, 2018 11:28 AM (VkOIy) Legal Insurrection has a quick take on it. The federal law required that a retailer had to have a presence in the state for the state to enforce it's sales tax requirement by requiring the retailer to collect tax and send it to the state. This ruling eliminates that presence requirement. States have always had the power to collect a sales tax on out of state sales,( Michigan asks you to declare on your Income Tax form if you have bought anything out of state that would ordinarily be subject to the states sales tax if it was bought in state). Now they can legally compel an internet company to charge the tax, collect it, and send the tax to the state treasurer. Posted by: Jen the original at June 21, 2018 11:36 AM (OdLH1) 597

Absolutely - Lucia vs SEC really deserves it's own thread. It's kind of "inside baseball" for legal types, but this is going to go down as one of the most significant decision of this entire session. Short version - the President just got a whole lot more power over the Bureaucracy, and the Bureaucracy just lost a lot of power they had granted to themselves. This has been one of Gorsuch's biggest goals, he has written on it, and even though Kagan authored the opinion, it is full of ideas that Gorsuch has been behind for years. You would have figured conservatives would be AGAINST such taxes and liberals FOR such taxes, instead we got a flip, with each side getting a defector. I'm really sad about Thomas. HE KNOWS such decsicions chip away against liberty. The power to tax is the power to destroy and WE HAD a tax free zone to operate in. This is a very BIG FUCKING DEAL. I wish I could have argued this case. Maybe some day. They overturned their own precedent....which means they were wrong for the last 50 years. Nothing new about USSC being wrong...see Plessy v Ferguson or Dred Scott. Buy anywho, this is a YUGE tax grab by the cash strapped states and it's the sheeple getting fleeced. So now the sheeple have LESS money in their pockets to buy stuff and stimulate more economic activity. Government has MORE cash to waste on useless economically draining activities like spending millions on needles for drug addicts, or enforceing a new boating operators license "tax" in Commiefornia. Boy, I'm going back and forth on this Sales Tax Ruling. Kennedy's opinion delves way too much into policy decisions that it makes me think he is wrong. Ultimately, methinks that if you choose as a seller to sell into a state, then that state has the power to require you collect sales tax - though not necessarily the power to compel collection per se - how would it ever gain personal jurisdiction.

State where you live? State where you BOUGHT? State its shipped from? State where Internet Site resides? ----- The rule on local taxes is "where did the consumer take delivery of the merchandise". I used to run lumberyards for a living and made deliveries in a two state city with multiple municipal tax jurisdictions. No easy feat to be in compliance and make all the correct filings. Government has MORE cash to waste on useless economically draining activities like spending millions on needles for drug addicts, or enforceing a new boating operators license "tax" in Commiefornia. "
The answer to that is electing local governments that don't do shit like that. I'm actually pretty satisfied with the way my city, county, and state spend the money they raise, but then again I live in Texas, and it's a well run place. If you don't live in a well run place, consider leaving. and whatever any state does not raise through sales taxes, they will raise through either property, income, or use taxes. I rather prefer sales tax to be at least a part of the mix. I have sympathy for small business owners, something will have to evolve to make the situation less onerous on them. Those who said that from the start were right. I'm the same way. Secret courts? Not finding anything in the Constitution that says that's OK. That was an unnecessary move IMO. There are better ways to prevent terrorism, one of them should be to ban CAIR and any other radical muslim-supremacist groups from operating here. Another would be banning the construction of mosques. If W had been genuinely interested in stopping terrorism, he would've nuked Medina the day after 9/11 and announced that another terrorist attack on American soil would result in the nuking of Mecca next time. Posted by: Trigger Warning at June 21, 2018 11:43 AM (YRXy3) The ruling doesn't force businesses to collect sales tax. It removes the physical presence requirement in order for a state to require the online retailer to collect the tax. Which also removes the disincentive to open a retail location in a different state. Every online seller already has to collect state sales tax in the state they are organized in if they are selling in state. It's not like there is some huge new burden coming, there will be software available immediately for a business to plug into that will provide accounting for individual sales tax.
