Bill Maher: I'm Rooting for a Recession Which Hurts Americans

I hope he fails.

Didn't Rush Limbaugh get boycotted for that remark? And chastised by the media, of course?

Why doesn't Bill Maher?

Maybe living well will be the best revenge. The host of Showtime's "The Circus," Mark McKinnon, observed:

McKinnon tweeted that rhetoric like this -- along with controversial statements from liberal celebrities like Robert De Niro and Samantha Bee -- "plays right into Trump's playbook" and will "help ensure four more years."

By the way, Bill Maher's nasty little wish seems unlikely: Matt Vespa notes that this quarter's GDP growth rate is projected to be 3.8% to 4.6%, which would be the highest quarterly growth rate since George W. Bush, who managed one (and only one) big quarter of something like 4.8% growth.

Obama's average quarterly growth rate (not the same as a single quarter number) was... 1.5%, putting him dead last of all presidents since WW2.

Vespa writes a bit more about the "unstoppable" economy, which is CNBC's word for it, by the way.

Friday's data provided convincing evidence that domestic growth remains intact even if other developed economies are slowing. A better-than-expected nonfarm payrolls report coupled with a convincing uptick in manufacturing and construction activity showed that the second half approaches with a tail wind blowing.

"The fundamentals all look very solid right now," said Gus Faucher, chief economist at PNC. "You've got job growth and wage gains that are supporting consumer spending, and tax cuts as well. There's a little bit of a drag from higher energy prices, but the positives far outweigh that. Business incentives are in good shape."

The day started off with the payrolls report showing a gain of 223,000 in May, well above market expectations of 188,000, and the unemployment rate hitting an 18-year low of 3.8 percent.

Then, the ISM manufacturing index registered a 58.7 reading -- representing the percentage of businesses that report expanding conditions -- that also topped Wall Street estimates. Finally, the construction spending report showed a monthly gain of 1.8 percent, a full point higher than expectations.

...

The most recent slate of widely followed barometers could see economists ratchet up growth expectations.

Already, the Atlanta Fe''s GDPNow tracker sees the second quarter rising by 4.8 percent. While the measure also was strongly optimistic on the first quarter as well, at one point estimating 5.4 percent growth, other gauges are positive as well. CNBC's Rapid Update, for instance, puts the April-to-June period at 3.6 percent.

...

Andrew Hunter, U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said the ISM number alone is consistent with GDP growth of better than 4 percent, though he thinks the second quarter will be in the 3 percent to 3.5 percent range.

67 A part of me wants to point out that

a) there are a lot more moving pieces in the world economy than who the US president is. As we said repeatedly under Obama when the media correlated every piece of decent economic news as the direct result of whatever obama policy they were pushing that day.

and

b) when the feds decide the economy is "too hot," they're going to raise interest rates in an effort to stop the growth. Interest rates DO need to go up, but centrally planning these kinds of things are very tricky. This is something we repeatedly warned could be a huge problem in the decade plus we had near-zero percent interest rates from the feds.

...Not to be a Debbie Downer, but the Federal Reserve can crash Trumps party whenever they want. And they really have a legitimate excuse to do so (we can't keep interest rates this low forever)

103 Not to be a Debbie Downer, but the Federal Reserve can crash Trumps party whenever they want. And they really have a legitimate excuse to do so (we can't keep interest rates this low forever)

And they are easing the interest rates up slowly, but even they know if they jack them up 5 points the world economy craters to lower than depression era times.

THIS.

The full context of the quote was "knowing who Obama is and what he wants to do to this country, I hope he fails."

Bill Maher personally hates PDT and wants America and Americans to suffer - directly suffer - just because he hates this man.

And the illogic of that is radiant since like him or not personally, PDT is truly doing miracles for the economy and American interests in general.

Sick man, that Maher.

I will say I do worry what the Fed does with interest rates as they absolutely can cause a recession or crash the stock market. I wonder if the Deep State decides to rear its head there.

This goes way back. Jimmy Carter was a nuclear engineer, JFK was "brilliant"--I can't remember if LBJ was. And even thought Adlai Stevenson was a real-world doorpost, he earned the "intellectual" label in the press.

Compare with the treatment that classicist Calvin Coolidge received as a guy who read classic plays in the original Greek and Latin, and actually wrote original critiques. He was called "anti-intellectual".

It's all based on the narrative that progressives are the smart people, and other people who don't get progressive politics are the dummies.

And it goes back a long way. Google Daniel J. Flynn on Coolidge.

191 When his show premiered on ABC "Politically Incorrect" he actually was pretty libertarianish that threw a bone to both sides, but he knows at HBO they want an arch-liberal so he gives it to them.

I read a great theory as to why he changed.

Politically Incorrect was filmed in New York City. He'd leave his studio and go to the local cafe, meet the doorman, take a taxi to his apartment, etc. He was meeting and dealing with regular blue collar working class people so they helped balance his lefty ideas and show biz influences.

He moved to LA to start this new show and now he's chauffeured from the air conditioned studio to a hip club or a party of show biz types and never has any contact any more with regular folks. So he gets crazier and crazier lefty, and his coastal audience claps like a seal to approve of and reward that perspective.

He still once in a while says somewhat libertarian stuff, but its rare. Mostly he throws stupid red meat out there and I suspect he believes maybe... half of it? But he knows where his paycheck comes from.

192 I agree the stock market (Dow Jones) appears to be a bubble, except....

about every thirty years or so the stock market experiences a step change of an order of magnitude. The step itself lasts about 7 years.

Around early 60's the market went from value in the low hundreds to the low thousands. In the late eighties it went from thousands to the ten thousands where it was sitting to about 2014. Since then it has begun its rise almost like clockwork.

Scandinavia isn't all that socialist anymore, before Trump's tax cut , these countries had had about half the corporate tax rate the US did. They've moved away from a lot of state-owned industries real socialism, but are still like a really blue state.

And places like Norway have offshore drilling that basically pays for all their social services and a population smaller than Arizona. It's pretty hard to mess that up.

258 I'd like to know how you think SS is tied to welfare.

It could be but not the way you've said.

for the lower stipend recipients it is. If SS is reduced for them they will have to sign up for welfare or other programs as they don't have enough money/income to live otherwise.

Two things would keep SS solvent:

Put a cap on the income of those who receive SS. Right now it's fairly high. Way higher than what's needed for a decent living. If those payments were not made those getting them would not suffer as they already have enough retirement income to live well.

Second is to begin some in depth investigation into all the disability claims. many are fraudulent. whole groups composed of lawyers doctors and accountants have made getting disability so easy. Many are career government workers who know how to game the system.

Medicare has always been a loser and should be reformed into some sort of national minimal plan but not mandatory.

275 2% growth of a $20 trillion economy is $400 billion.
4% growth of a $20 trillion economy is $800 billion.

Let that sink in a minute.

Over 8 years, Obama's growth rate of 1.5% would yield and economy of $22.5 trillion. Trump's growth rate would yield $27.3 trillion. Overall we would be $20 trillion richer.

So ask yourself, is liberal horse shit worth $20 trillion? all the rules, regulations, taxes, etc? That is the real cost of all of this, and it can't be repeated enough.

When you have a mouthpiece speaking for you, you can, if necessary, distance yourself from what exactly he said.

298 In the 80's, my girlfriend worked in a boutique retail clothes store in Manhattan run by some designer called Janet Russo. Working with her was an 18 year old black girl by the name of Petal who was trying to become a model, and they became close friends.

Evidently, being a young black model in 1980's New York meant having to deal with Robert DeNiro. He would have people scouting the agencies for him, offering the promising black girls employment with "Bobby" in various assistant roles... always only the black girls, always only teenagers. What model/actress hopeful in New York would turn down a gig with "Bobby."

The girl told us (and we believed her - she did work for him and she was a religious and completely straight person) how he hit on her... getting her alone, late, walking in, dropping his pants and telling her, "suck it, Petal. Suck it." He didn't physically force her, and he eventually let her out of his loft, but she was a little freaked out.

He's one romantic motherfucker, and the perfect liberal hypocrite. Of course he is.

Limbaugh made his comment reluctantly, when the economy was still

reluctant, he relishes the thought. With a perfunctory apology for "the
little people".

300 Social Security would be pretty easy to fix, it's just a political stalemate that Democrats are never going to "not" use against Republicans .

And truthfully, Republicans would probably be politically stupid to do anything unless they had full control of everything.

But if they raised eligibility to like 2 years and maybe had a little more scrutiny with disability claims, that would probably fix it for everyone here to retire.

My guess is though any solution will first need a crisis and both sides will have to give up something. So I expect a tax increase to make it solvent at a minimum.

341 SS won't get fixed until checks stop.

Then the GOPe and Jackasses will have cover to make changes that they can't get done now because of too much political fallout.

It will be a national mess. Probably be some emergency spending bills for a while to keep the checks going and then a different program for recipients to transfer to.

And if the economy gets going, that will save SS and Medicare for a few more years.

Ironic isn't it?

In the 80's, my girlfriend worked in a boutique retail clothes store in
Manhattan run by some designer called Janet Russo. Working with her was
an 18 year old black girl by the name of Petal who was trying to become a
model, and they became close friends.

Evidently, being a young black model in 1980's New York meant having
to deal with Robert DeNiro. He would have people scouting the agencies
for him, offering the promising black girls employment with "Bobby" in
various assistant roles... always only the black girls, always only
teenagers. What model/actress hopeful in New York would turn down a gig
with "Bobby."

The girl told us (and we believed her - she did work for him and she
was a religious and completely straight person) how he hit on her...
getting her alone, late, walking in, dropping his pants and telling her,
"suck it, Petal. Suck it." He didn't physically force her, and he
eventually let her out of his loft, but she was a little freaked out.

He's one romantic motherfucker, and the perfect liberal hypocrite. Of course he is.

-------------------------------

There are cities/neighborhoods within cities, that are essentially no-go zones right here in the USA.

It's too dangerous to do business there, and the larger supermarket chains have for the most part closed any stores they might have had there, for the simple reason the stores are robbed through both the front and back doors.

That gives newly arrived immigrants a possible entrepreneur opportunity - open a mini mart in a neighborhood lacking one. But these are mini marts not supermarkets. They sell food but not a lot of it. And it's extremely dangerous for the proprietors. Think of the roof top Koreans back in the LA riots in the '90's.

Food desert. Who came up with this asinine notion?

Posted by: Fritz at June 11, 2018 07:35 PM (J7XgW)

-------------------------------

There are cities/neighborhoods within cities, that are essentially no-go zones right here in the USA.

It's too dangerous to do business there, and the larger supermarket
chains have for the most part closed any stores they might have had
there, for the simple reason the stores are robbed through both the
front and back doors.

That gives newly arrived immigrants a possible entrepreneur
opportunity - open a mini mart in a neighborhood lacking one. But these
are mini marts not supermarkets. They sell food but not a lot of it.
And it's extremely dangerous for the proprietors. Think of the roof top
Koreans back in the LA riots in the '90's.

Posted by: Boots at June 11, 2018 07:46 PM (blfUS)

Actually, food deserts are created when racist evil whites and Joos conspire to deny all of the poor people fresh vegetables so they will eventually be the size of North Koreans.
Instead they are forced to eat Doritos (except no Cool Ranch flavor - those are reserved for the rich white kids) and Mountain Dew.

I thought everyone knew that already.

I think we realize, deep down, that the billions, nay ...trillions collected have been spent and squandered.

It's always been "pay as you go" with Social Security for the last few decades. The paper bonds put away as a "trust fund" are worth whatever the government thinks they are worth.
I've been paying in for over 45 years, early just a tiny bit of course, but who really knows if there is going to be anything there at all. The promises from the government are worth about as much as a roll of used toilet paper.

452 Yea, Bush only had a short improvement on the economy. But, of course he dealt with the dotcom bubble bursting in early 2001 which hurt the economy. Then 9/11, anthrax scare, the Indonesia tsunami. Katrina and the housing bubble burst which caused a recession. Also, he dealt with the left turning on him followed by the independents and then some on the right. I still don't care for Trump personally, but think he is doing a good job as President and would vote for him again. However, neither he nor Obama have dealt with the things Bush did.

454 Bill Mayer can hope for failure and American's to suffer, he can afford to, a Rich, Privileged, white who lives in a gated upscale community in a Mansion with armed guards he won't feel any pain.
The same goes for De Niro, A washed up, old white man who is rich and too old to get a new gig, living in a Mansion, probably the same gated guarded community Maher lives in, full of privileged entitled who thinks he can stay relevant by preaching to the Choir filled with the same rich, white entitled and privileged democrat voting people.
Look at who these are and what they are when they get struck with Trump derangement and loose mouth syndrome.
