After Iranian Military Launches Missiles at Israel From Positions in Golan Heights, Israel Destroys "Nearly All" of Iran's Military Infrastructure in Syria

Israeli Warplanes Hit Dozens of Iranian Targets in Syria

Hours later, Israel responded. By Thursday morning, the country's air force had destroyed "nearly all" of Iran's military infrastructure in Syria, according to Israel's defense minister, Avigdor Lieberman.

"If there is rain on our side, there will be a flood on their side," Mr. Lieberman said in remarks broadcast from a policy conference in Herzliya, near Tel Aviv. He added, "I hope we have finished with this round and that everybody understood."

In all, at least 23 people were killed in the strikes, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group. The Syrian Army, by contrast, said that three people had died.

...

The White House condemned the missile attack on Israel, saying in a statement that it strongly supported "Israel's right to act in self-defense," and called on Iran "to take no further provocative steps."

What do you think President SportsCenter would have said?

Waiting for Jen Rubin to condemn Israel now.

The Independent says Israel and Iran are on "the brink of war."

I don't think that would work out well for Iran.

The Independent offers a few more details and yet a third translation of the "rain" threat, this one my favorite:

The blistering Israeli response targeted what officials said was almost all of Iran’s military infrastructure inside Syria, including dozens of weapons storage sites and intelligence centres used by elite Iranian forces, as well as Syrian air defence systems. The Syrian systems did not damage any Israeli planes.

"They need to remember the saying that if it rains on us, it'll storm on them," Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman told media on Thursday. "I hope we finished this chapter and everyone got the message."

According to the Russian military, Israel fired more than 70 missiles during the attack.

Netanyahu also said Iran "crossed a red line."

While the Europeans are "concerned" about the Israeli counter-attack and will likely condemn them -- Europeans have a tradition of conducting Jews to their deaths -- the Arab state Bahrain supports Israel.

The once-secret alliance of Israel and several Arab states is no longer secret at all, especially now that Obama has scared hell out of them by giving Iran the bomb.

In an extremely rare expression of support for an Israeli military operation, the foreign minister of Bahrain on Thursday said Israel's overnight attack on Iranian targets in Syria was legitimate in light of Tehran’s increasing aggression.

"As long as Iran continues the current status quo of its forces and rockets operating in the region, any country -- including Israel -- has the right to defend itself by eliminating the source of danger," Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa posted on his Twitter account, writing in Arabic.

BTW, I just found CNN with yet a fourth translation of the rain threat:

"Israel has hit almost all of Iran's infrastructure in Syria," Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said Thursday morning. "If it will rain in Israel, there will be a biblical flood on the other side."

I'm staring to think what this guy really said was the Hebrew word for "deluge" but editors don't trust Current Year Americans to know what that word means and have to keep looking for other words for it.

Suggests that they weren't too happy about the missiles fired at Israel and this was letting the Iranians know that if they eat one bean, they gotta eat the whole burrito by themselves.

They don't matter. To anyone. So they stick their concern where the sun don't shine.

Pro tip: this is the result of not having a functional military, and the balls to use it if necessary. In that case, all you can is write flowery letters expressing your "concern," and the recipients of those letters wipe their asses with the letters.

Don't really trust our clown car press to get stuff right. But whatever the truth is, it was a great quote.

138 I don't think they would do that, and I'm sure Israel is prepared, and if Iran was that stupid to try, then we'd be in it too."

From putting together all the events and statements of the last few days, I have the strong impression that Israel is stating publicly that they are ready for this war, and also that they don't believe that Iran is ready for it all yet. Not war with Israel.

If you believe that War, real War is inevitable, then it's far better to start the war at a time of your own choosing, rather than at a time of your enemies choosing. (the huge mistake made by England and France in the late 30's)

Now, with this large scale attack, Iran has the very uncomfortable choice to either Go Big or Go Home. And it's looking like they're not ready to Go Big yet. And yes, they can stage a strategic withdrawal, but they are working hard to give all of their underlings this aura of Power and Invulnerability, and to be forced into backing down by despised Israel is going to be particularly humiliating for the Ayatollah's.

The worst thing of all would be for Iran to do nothing at all, and try to pretend that this didn't happen, because then Israel can just sit back and blow stuff of theirs up every couple of days, and all Iran will be able to do about it is sit back and say "THANK YOU SIR MAY I HAVE ANOTHER???"

177 BTW, I just found CNN with yet a fourth translation of the rain threat:

"Israel has hit almost all of Iran's infrastructure in Syria," Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said Thursday morning. "If it will rain in Israel, there will be a biblical flood on the other side."

I'm staring to think what this guy really said was the Hebrew word for "deluge" but editors don't trust Current Year Americans to know what that word means and have to keep looking for other words for it.

I'm not so sure that's it. CNN used the most inflammatory interpretation of "biblical flood", while the NYT subtly hinted at it with "flood"and the Independent used the almost-neutral but more secularly inflammatory "storm".

They're doing their usual emotional manipulation, attempting to get the reader to think about it the way they want instead of just reporting it.

And Russian Arms sales to Iran have not really been that large. S-300 missiles (not their best)... in small numbers...

And a possible deal to either build, or get delivery, of SU-30 Fighter Jets... a deal which was on the table, but I can find no evidence it was consummated...

Much like the story of the Deal between Iran and China, where Iran would get 24 Fighter Jets for giving China control of an oil field... which apparently never happened.

Iran makes most of its own weapons... including rockets and missiles... they just can't do modern avionics..

This is between Sunni and the Shia. The Saudis and the Iranians. Israel has sided with the Saudis. OK. They gotta do what they gotta do, unlike the US they have to actually worry about Iranian attacks, obviously.

I'd prefer it there was a way for Iran and Saudi Arabia to just drestroy each other without anyone else getting involved. Israel being involved guarantees a Saudi victory. Even Russia couldn't stop those two working together.

I'm conflicted because as good as it is for Iran to lose and Israel to win. I don't want to Saudis to win either.

328 Iranian backed militias were also openly flying their colors during recent ops to drive out Daesh from both Iraq and Syria. So yes, some of them walked through Iraq. It is suspected that's how some IRG got across the Syrian border.

329 Iranian military/intel presence in Syria (and Lebanon, especially the Ba'aka Valley) loooong predates the 2003 elimination of the Ba'athist regime in Baghdad.

And of course Iran has serious traction and action in Iraq. Not just neighbors - co-religionists make up the majority of Iraq's populace. Pre-mature return of sovereignty, effing up the SOFA, and most of all idiotic abandonment of the field under Bambi made fighting Iran there much more difficult.

But when Iran butts up against Israel, for real, as in this case - there won't be any screwing around.

343 OT This is kinda long but I'm asking for some horde wisdom about an incident that I'm still pissed off about.
Somebody help me with this please.

The short version-

Found a wallet today with no phone number in it. Drivers license and various normal crap including a debit card from a local very small bank. And a grand total of $3 so not some kinda rock star money.

Called my office and had them call the bank. Call the guy if they have a number and give him my number and he can get his wallet.

Blah blah blah and he calls me. Yes I've got your wallet. I'm parked about five minutes away, come get it. He's the passenger in a pick up that pulls up where I'm parked.

I get out of my vehicle and walk up to them and hand the guy his wallet through the driver's window. I stick out my hand to shake his and send them on their way.

What does he do? he never even looks up. He looks down at the wallet and literally said "as long as the debit card's there". And never even acknowledges my extended hand. Then they drive away.

WTAF IS THAT? I almost called him back and cussed his sorry ass out. I almost chased the sorry mfer down and beat his freaking ass but I couldn't do either because of my job.

Can somebody explain this to me? I still freaking pissed off an hour later and typing this is making it worse.

I need some horde wisdom please.

I don't think any Air Defense can stop air power... they can only make the strike costly...

Because Air Defense systems have limited ammunition, mobility, and range.

So they can defend a location... but unless they have 40 or 50 missiles ready (like modern ships do)... they can only stop a few attacking missiles, or aircraft.

So why waste your ammunition, defending someone else...

405 The late German keyboardist Florian Fricke, leader of the prog-rock/krautrock/proto-new age collective Popol Vuh, was a very spiritual man who announced in the early 70s that God had spoken to him and told him to give up electronic keyboards and play only acoustic keyboard instruments.

So he sold his Moog to electronic music pioneer Klaus Schulze, who went on to make all kinds of classic albums with it.

But by the 1980s, God apparently told Fricke it was OK to play electronic keyboards again.

Apropos of nothing, but the Cat Stephens thing made me think of it.

Most of that is true - but as to the person who annoyed him, I'm reminded of what me dear, sweet, departed Southern born and bred mother-in-law would say: That's the difference between being well bred, and just being poor white trash.

We live in a nation of trash now and no one even remembers what being well bred used to mean, but one of the things was that you go way out of your way to thank people who help you and to acknowledge them, whether you feel like it or not. You need to be trained to act like you're supposed to act, not just to act like you feel.
