Declassified Congressional Report: Yes, James Clapper Leaked to Jake Tapper About the Russia/Dossier Briefing and Then Lied to Congress About It

Let me add in my own "finding:" Clapper was going to continue lying about this until the specificity of the question -- Did you leak to Jake Tapper, specifically? -- suggested to him that Congress knew and had him in a perjury trap if he continued to lie.

So at that point, he said "Oh right, now that you mention it..."

Are we to believe he'd previously forgotten?

From Sean Davis:

Buried within a newly declassified congressional report on Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. elections is a shocking revelation: former Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper not only leaked information about the infamous Steele dossier and high-level government briefings about it to CNN, he also may have lied to Congress about the matter.

In one of the findings within the 253-page report, the House intelligence committee wrote that Clapper leaked details of a dossier briefing given to then-President-elect Donald Trump to CNN’s Jake Tapper, lied to Congress about the leak, and was rewarded with a CNN contract a few months later.

"Clapper flatly denied 'discussing[ing] the dossier [compiled by Steele] or any other intelligence related to Russia hacking of the 2016 election with journalists,'" the committee found.

When asked directly whether he had ever discussed the dossier with any journalists, Clapper replied that he had not, according to a transcript of the proceedings:

MR. ROONEY: Did you discuss the dossier or any other intelligence related to Russia hacking of the 2016 election with journalists?

MR. CLAPPER: No.

The former DNI later changed his story after he was confronted specifically about his communications with Jake Tapper of CNN.

"Clapper subsequently acknowledged discussing the 'dossier with CNN journalist Jake Tapper,' and admitted that he might have spoken with other journalists about the same topic," the report continued. “Clapper’s discussion with Tapper took place in early January 2017, around the time IC leaders briefed President Obama and President-elect Trump, on 'the Christopher Steele information,' a two-page summary of which was ‘enclosed in’ the highly-classified version of the ICA," or intelligence community assessment.

Clapper was then hired as a CNN national security commentator.

Remember, CNN was looking for a "news hook" -- this is straight from Comey's mouth -- to report on the dossier. Did Tapper mention that to Clapper? Did Clapper then contrive this whole briefing, which he could leak to his future employer, as the exact "news hook" CNN was looking for?

I'm 99% certain that's exactly what happened. And I've been saying so for more than a year.

My only question is whether Brennan and Comey also understood the purpose of this briefing was not to inform the president, but to deliver CNN the news hook it needed to report the fake dossier paid for by Clinton.

Were they co-conspirators, or just Clapper's dupes?

108 Then Lied to Congress About Ir

Ir is generally understood to be an acronym for infrared. The name infrared comes from the Latin word infra, meaning "below", since infrared light has a longer wavelength (i.e. below) that of red light.

Sir William Herschel, an amateur astronomer famous for the discovery
of Uranus in 1781, discovered infrared in the early 19th century.

Yet serendipitous another crossing of AoSHQ memes.

179 It was Clapper and Brennan all along. As Ace and others have pointed out, this has all of the ingredients of an intelligence op. It reeks of tradecraft.

May we all agree that Comey is an idiot? May we all agree that Hillary doesn't care how a thing is done by subordinates, only that it (whatever it might be) is done. Sid Blumenthal was probably her go-between on the Fusion GPS business--either him or that former CIA guy on her payroll whose name escapes me right now.

Obama and Valerie Jarrett have been (and are) extraordinarily careful when it comes to plausible deniability. Obama would never give a direct order to suborn an election or subvert a sitting President to a subordinate--especially someone as devious and double-dealing as Clapper and/or Brennan.

So who'll squeal? I'd bet on McCabe. He's the lowest in the hierarchy in this little cabal. Besides, he looks like a squealer. He's got that John Dean look going on.

I remember when they went full Never Trumper, banned all their commenters, and stopped pretending to be Republicans or Conservatives... someone said "Ed, you're going to lose your job over this decision" on Twitter adn Ed Morrissey had a good laugh about it.

Boy would it be funny if he did lose his job. Especially because going full "never trump" probably wasnt even his decision.

Lawyers like to spread a lot of shade about how "hard" a law degree is to get - honestly, it just takes a diligent work ethic (like everything worthwhile), an ability to memorize text and read quickly, and an ability to perform well on logic puzzles.

A bachelor's degree in any of the STEM fields is much more difficult to earn.

Posted by: Tom Servo

Anything done well is harder than the outsider thinks. Good lawyers are very smart. But, truly, most of them, doing routine stuff, can be replaced by software.

356 And what you REALLY can't test for is whether someone is going to take things seriously and consistently study hard, or whether they're going to figure this is a great time to hit the bars every night. I surmise that we're all experienced enough to know that someone who has a bit of talent but who works diligently will always outperform someone who has a lot of talent but just glides through, trying to do the bare minimum possible.

although at least one person who took that approach made it all the way to the Presidency.

There's a racket with these books where attendees to a political event have to buy the book as part of admission and/or the hosts agree to buy X books and give them out to attendees. IIRC, they also have had political organizations buy up a lot of these books when they first come out to push up sales numbers.

There are many scams that ensure that the publisher doesn't lose money, and are essentially being reimbursed for the big advances paid out.

What we have to break is the two pronged tool they use to feed it:

The lie that you have to get a college education to make it in this world

The lie that college is the next step after high school, that
everyone should go there and its just a continuing process. Once you
graduation from HS, you're done. You can choose to go to college, but
that's up to you, like choosing to join the military or choosing to put
your testicles into a food processor.

479 Often time old legends capture distant memories of extreme things that have happened in the past. The Norse myths speak of a "Fimbulwinter", a period of 3 years of solid snow and ice with no warming, in which most of humanity perishes. Many suspect that this is a distant memory of something that happened in the 6th century, specifically around 535 - 536 AD.

Not only did the Mediterranean world mostly collapse at that time, but a few surviving written records from Ireland speak of great starvation, and across the world peoples were on the move everywhere and nations that had existed for thousands of years simply vanished. Something big happened, and no one is really sure what.

There's a theory that there was a previous explosion near Krakatoa, that may have been 10 times as large, at about that time.

saw one piece once on why the island explosion are so huge - it has to do with the way volcanoes have a large magma chamber under the surface supplying them. The volcano blows all the magma out, the chamber is emptied, the weight of the ocean water and overburden collapses it, and instantly a cubic mile or so of seawater becomes superheated steam, resulting in an explosion about the size of the Tsar Bomba, or bigger.

529 By the way - I happened to catch the anti trump made up furor of the day yesterday ( or maybe the day before, they all blend) that Trumps "earlier denial" of not staying overnight in Moscow during pee pee gate was contradicted by "flight records which showed he did, indeed, stay overnight for one night" !!! Eleventy. Hookers peeing on beds fest ahoy!

I though to myself two things when I read this:

1. I do not recall Trump denying he was overnight in Moscow. Reading into the story this was a statement made up by Comey in one of his "memos" of his meetings with the President where Trump said "his head barely hit the pillow" when he was in Moscow. Well - reading further, the story confirms that the flight and other records records show he left New York on Thursday, arrived mid to late morning Moscow time on Friday - did a full day's work, went to his room, left his room the next morning (Saturday), spent the day and evening working on the Miss Universe Pageant, attended, briefly the after party that (Saturday Night) then got on a plane at 4:00AM in the morning that overnight to get back to New York. So, in other words, his head barely hit the pillow. He was in Moscow just barely over about 40 hours. Not exactly time to coordinator a multiple hooker pee fest in his hotel, certainly not realistically, even assuming he was so inclined to do something so completely out of character ( Women let me grab them by the pussy, cause I'm rich) and work the Miss Universe Pageant, along with all his other work. The I also thought:

2. Trump flew 11 to 12 hours, landed late Friday morning in Moscow, arranged a full blown hooker party in his room for that day/eve, complete with golden showers etc. ( in advance because he skillfully arranged to do all this in Obama's room) then undertook the production and hosting/oversight of the Miss Universe Pageant the next day, blew off the doors at the rocking after party and still made his flight back to New York City out of Moscow Airport at 4:00am Saturday overnight? My God, I thought to myself, if that is what happened this guy Trump is one hell of a badass!

564 Obama clearly screened his top hires along the lines of his own himself: looking for those who could be superficially unassuming and "conventional" as the best cover for their actual, seething hatred of America-as-founded.

Clapper and Brennan are of this model. Guys who look natural in suits and ties, with seemingly conventional credentials and histories, but who somewhere along the way (before and as condition of being hired by Obama) turned onto the leftist path. Both turned out to be spies and saboteurs for the Obama left.

But seriously, real college life ain't no picnic. Oh, maybe to Trust Fund activists and legacy placements, it can be Animal House. For the vast majority of students it's a pretty taxing time. Trump simple pulled a page out of the Ronald Reagan book. In the height of the cod war, Reagan used to order the B-52's to line up on the runway, one after the other. Possibly while the Soviet satellites were passing directly overhead.

He wanted the Soviets to shit their pants.

What did Trump do? How many nuke carriers off the coast? How many B-2 flights directly pointed at the Norks? He told them, in effect, you want war? We'll give you war.

From a biographical sketch of Henry Gilman, chemistry professor at Iowa State:

"The complaints of Gilman's students of those days center on three specific aspects of his behavior. First the unremitting pressure on them to work all and every day, and to produce results each day; second the low stipends he paid them; and third, and the most important, the length of time, and the uncertainty of its duration, that they were normally required to stay before receiving their Ph.D. degrees.

"The students certainly had no opportunity to slack. Gilman went around his laboratories three times each day, in the morning, afternoon and evening, questioning each student in turn about what he had done since his last visit, what he was now doing, and what he intended to do next. When a project was at an especially interesting stage the student concerned would be questioned on all three visits. Gilman remembered exactly what he had been told on the previous visit and so the hours in between had to be accounted for. The initial questioning usually took the form 'What's new?' and the answer was followed by the question 'What else is new?' and the answer to that by the further question 'And what else?'. One of his students from those days has written: 'Always we would begin to think that we had done very little. The cunning ones soon realized that you should keep some results up your sleeve to report next week in order to make your achievements seem more impressive.'

"He did not visit the laboratory every Sunday, but did so sufficiently often that the students could not risk being absent that day. At all times students in the laboratory were expected to be giving their full attention to experiments in progress, and those caught seizing an opportunity to study for graduate course or preliminary examinations were sharply reprimanded. They had some chance to get away with such study, however, because throughout his research career he tried to avoid coming upon embarrassing situations by shuffling his feet loudly outside the laboratory to give warning of his arrival. Gilman himself frequently stayed in the building until after 10 p.m. and then went home to work until after midnight reading or writing. During the whole of his career, except at the time of his eye operation, he was rarely, if ever, away from Ames for more than a week or so at a time, and when he did go away he told no one, not even his secretary, when he would be back, so that his students could not risk taking a day off.

"As for the stipends he paid, he fixed the amounts by working out carefully exactly the minimum sum on which each student could manage. This had the secondary advantage of leaving them little to spend on leisure activities which might have kept them away from the laboratory. Someone who worked for him as postdoctoral fellow in the 1940s has told of how, in fixing his salary, Gilman asked him whether soap was provided free in his lodgings, and made an appropriate allowance when told that it was not.

"The majority of the graduate students took 5-7 years to get their degrees, at a time when in other universities three years was still usual. Some were required to stay even longer; at least one is known to have taken ten years (and he, tragically, was killed in a fall from a ladder before leaving Ames) and some abandoned the attempt after a lengthy stay."

Well in that case you have the clearest example of perjury and should be a layup to find a reasonable prosecutor.

If given the option of telling the truth or not the truth and you tell the not truth and then admit that what you said was not true then open and shut case. Frog marched of to FPMITAP.

But the trick is to...

A. Have the DOJ file charges.
B. Find a reasonable prosecutor.

Which seems a infreaking surmountable challange these days.

Where did people get the idea that the word "journalist" denotes something so special. It's just someone who writes in a journal, whether it's your 8 yr old daughter writing in her diary or a paid writer for a journal, i.e., magazine or newsrag.
By extension it is given to TV and radio (and internet) peeps.

Tapper is a journalist, a mendacious, biased, and corrupt one, but still a journalist.

What he is not is a reporter. To "report" implies a certain objectivity and subservience to facts.

639 This is why we should all be for smaller government and the dismantling of the Deep State.

Not just because of the scheming and lying and being above the law and all the chicanery, but because of their sheer incompetence.

Talk about an uncontested layup. They had all of the Deep State apparatchik at their disposal, including FBI, CIA, NSA, IRS, Justice Dept., ClintonCo., etc. and all they had to do was come up with something halfway feasible to turn public sentiment against Trump. Which shouldn't be hard. At all.

But instead, they cook up this scheme to forge an "intelligence report", and then use high-level bureaucrats to leak it to the press. And they fuck it up and are petardedly-hoist by their own staggering ineptitude.

Wow. You had one job and unlimited resources to do it. And you failed. Exhibit A through ZZZZ for deep-sixing the Deep State and the leviathan government that feeds it.
