Wealthy White New York City Liberals Scream and Shriek About Plan to Desegregate Their Lily-White Schools and Reserve Space In Their School for Underperforming Students

I've mentioned the controversies in this school district before. Archprogressive Samantha Bee's husband Jason Jones -- also a one-time Daily Show "correspondent" -- was one of the most outspoken opponents of the plan to bring some diversity to their Alt-White neighborhood school.

The plan was to switch some schools around in order to change the demographics of this rich white school (which is over three-quarters white or Asian, and in which only 13% of students are poor enough to receive federal lunch vouchers).

The new school, to which their rich white kids would be sent, was somewhat close to a housing project.

Egads! Actually mixing with poor minorities, instead of just gassing about how you'd be hypoethetically open to the theoretical possibility of it!

He, of course, claimed that his opposition to the plan mix black, Latino, and underprivileged students with his Alt-Reich brood has nothing at all to do -- nothing! -- with "racism" or "classism."

The outraged wealthy white liberals said that they just didn't want schools to play "musical chairs" with students or something.

He also told his other Rich White Parents not to talk to the press, lest they portray these rich white ultraprogs as racial hypocrites or something.

Jones has three children with former "Daily Show" correspondent Samantha Bee. He went on to complain about what he called "rhetoric" from some parents that, he thought, suggested those opposing the move are "terrified" of having their school relocate to a building near a housing project. He called that characterization, "dishonest at best and slanderous at worst."
"So I urge you A, to stop talking to the press," he continued. "This is a private matter, I think, from our community. This story doesn't exist without your quotes."

BTW, moving schools here and there, and moving students from school to school, is precisely how segregated schools are desegregated.

How else does he imagine this is accomplished?

If he and his fellow liberals didn't buy that "we're just against moving the schools or busing the students" argument from poor Southerners or poor working-class white Bostonians, why, I wonder, does the argument seem so richly compelling to them now?

Now a new plan is proposed. Instead of moving schools around, which is what the white liberal racists claim is the only thing they objected to, each school will remain in place, and just be required to set aside 25% of its slots for area students who underperform on tests for their grade level.

That is, mostly poor black and Latino kids who've been taught at the failing schools White Liberals allow to continue failing to appease their political allies, the teachers unions.

So -- the school isn't moving. And their white kids don't have to go to another school.

The only change is that some underperforming black and Latino students will be brought to their school.

Since their initial objection was definitely not "racist or classist," as Jason Jones alleged, but only about playing "musical chairs" with schools -- they should all support this new plan, right?

If you believe that, you haven't been paying much attention.

In fact, they're furious.

The new objection is that bringing in these minority kids will cause the school to reduce its standards and not give the rich white and Asian kids already at the school the same high level of education they'd come to expect.

White parents in Manhattan reacted with furious anger in response to a new plan for desegregating public schools on New York City's Upper West Side--one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Manhattan.
Local media outlet Spectrum News NY 1 posted a video showing multiple parents at Public School 199 extremely upset about the new plan. One visibly angry parent shouts:

You're talking about an 11-year-old, you worked your butt off, and you didn't get that, what you needed or wanted. You're telling them that you're not going to go to a school that's going to educate them the same way you've been educated. Life sucks! Is that what the DOE wants to say?
The newly-devised plan requires all local middle schools to reserve 25 percent of their seats for students who score below their respective grade level on standardized English and Math exams administered by the State of New York's Department of Education.

Wow, it's your kids being subject to Department of Education desegregation mandates now and suddenly the DOE is a disruptive, intrusive tyranny imposing cruel demands on your local arrangements, huh?

Who could have guessed it.

I don't know if Jason Jones or Samantha Bee have weighed in on this new plan -- but then, Jason Jones ordered his fellow wealthy white liberals to not talk to the press in order to make democracy die in darkness. So I'm not sure we'll be hearing from them.

Those are the most used methods. Let me hop on my hobby horse to advocate a better method. School choice by two methods. First, the best known, vouchers. Let those unhappy in the public schools take their vouchers and use them in the schools that best serve their kids needs in the private sector.

The other is the public choice method used at least at one point in time in Minnesota (it might still be, don't know). In that situation, parents can enroll their kids in any public school in the state. The kids won't be bussed, but if the parents are willing to transport them to a particular school, the kids can go.

Let competition into where kids go to school, and you will find schools looking to better themselves to get those lids, and dollars, into their schools. The desegregation will flow from that naturally.

Load it down with underperforming students... ie students who are already behind... don't speak English... or don't care due to 'culture'.

Because Teachers then spend all their time on those students... vice teaching the ones they already have... and are forced to dumb down the curriculum for those students (so they can pass).

Thus, shortchanging the Average student...

Which soon makes the whole system degrade.

My kids public school has "open enrollment".

Honestly, I don't like it. Half the kids in the school don't live in the district. The principal tries to "recruit" more kids outside the district so they get more money.

It's one of those "sounds good" proposals. Maybe it could be tweaked but my local taxes are funding a huge swath of people that don't live there and I'd rather see that money go to other things.

The best way to fix schools is your first example, vouchers. I personally would like to see a federal voucher system because states will never have enough money to really do it right.

107 I just found out this week that in northern virginia the school rankings have been changed to reflect "diversity" and "equity" scores (how well the worst students do compared to the rest). Previous good schools are downgraded and bad ones upgraded affecting housing prices---although the real estate agents know so maybe a meh.

I also found out that the public schools grade inflation here is so epic that an 80 in a "hard" course can be an A. That at least explains to me why the local public school kids get into some of the better schools and wash out compared to their private school competition. They didn't really get a great education, they were awarded it and it shows up later.

So these libs don't care about their diversity and equity scores? LOL

My state (AZ) actually has a really good voucher system, probably the best in the US.

You get a dollar for dollar state tax credit up to like $2,000. And you can "give" it to a friend or family member.

198 I was a victim of busing back the 80's in Louisville KY. My parents bought our house based on the school district it was in. Then the super smart local government and the teachers union decided that an underperforming school in a shitty neighborhood needed some white kids to bring the test scores up. So I got the (white) privilege of riding a bus across town for about 3 hours per day (1-1/2 hours each way). It was about 15 miles from our house, but 15 miles in rush hour traffic takes a long time. The school we thought I was going to go to was about a mile away and I was going to walk.

The most ridiculous part was how they picked who got bused. I don't know the system, but my sister went to a different high school than me and my brother...at the same time!

The bus drove past 2 other high schools on the way to ours.

My parents wouldn't allow me to participate in any extracurricular activities because if I missed the activity bus, I would likely be murdered in that neighborhood.

Louisville Teachers Unions agree.

Jefferson County Public Schools followed a court-ordered desegregation mandate ... what we call "bussing" ... back in 1975. Kids in the outer parts of Jefferson County got to do a few years downtown. Downtown kids went to the county.

You know who didn't go ... curiously enough ? A shit pot of sons and daughters of School Employees. "Magnet Schools" were what they were called at first. Now they're "Charter Schools".

But ... more than ten miles away from me. We left for Indiana. Most of the Jefferson County Tax Base went to Oldham, Shelby, and now Bullitt Counties instead.

And you can't find a bigger friend of the Bussing Policy than the Catholic School System.

Get this ... my two go to Public Schools in Western Floyd County, Indiana. Here's hoping Child Protective Services don't find out.

Fact is any parent who wants the best school for their kids will when moving look for the most expensive school district they can afford. These would also have the smallest free lunch crowd.

If not looking directly at real estate cost you could also look up first time aptitude test pass rates. This is what I did last time I moved to a large market with several high schools in the commuting area. For shits and giggles I also looked at the free lunch rate. First time pass rate and free lunch rate were inversely proportional. In fact it wouldn't be far off to say "first time pass" + "free lunch" = 1.

Keeping slots open in good schools for underperfoming students is smoke and mirrors - sending away the worse students would not make marginal students better, but would raise the pass rates the school they were expelled from.

There was a museum in Berkeley that had a "free day" with free admission for everyone, and they advertised free "kids' activities" at the museum during the day, to encourage people to bring children to the museum.

I had an out-of-town guest, so we went, because free.

In the auditorium there was load music and noises, so we peeked int to check it out. It was a"music performance" for the kids and their parents. About 300 people were in the audience.

On the stage were four performers: A white lady who did twerky hip-hop dances; an Hispanic guy who was a "DJ" doing electronic noises; a black guy who was a rapper; and a very very young (six years old?) black girl who was the "audience participation" dancer -- the kids in the audience were supposed to imitate her.

The first "song" -- if you can call it that -- was a tuneless rap about self-esteem. "Everyone is wonderful! You are all beautiful! Don't never let no one put you down! Don't never wear a frown!" Etc.

The music and sounds were grating, abrasive, atonal, and the lyrics were nearly impossible to decipher. But all the toddlers in the audience -- mostly between the ages of 2 and 5 -- were encouraged to get up and "dance" along with the two female performers, in a grotesquely sexualized twerking kind of gyration.

The parents clapped and cheered.

Annoying and ineffective, but it quickly went WAYYYY downhill.

For the next song, the DJ stepped up and started "freestyling" about immigration. He was barking loudly into the microphone such that it took extreme effort to understand what he was saying, but the gist of it was, "We don't want no walls! Tear down the White House instead! No person es ilegale, mi amigo! Don't be afraid of strangers, we your brothers!" Etc.

The parents -- liberals all -- cheered and clapped.

The next song was by the white twerker, and was about "Getting Woke." I'm quite sure that NONE of the toddlers knew what "woke" meant in this political context, but the song was aimed at the parents, frankly, in guise of being aimed at their kids: "Get woke! Open y'all minds! Woke ain't no joke! Stop being blind! Hate gonna kill us, until we stop the haters!" etc. etc.

The little white and Asian toddlers stood at the foot of the stage, confused and pained expressions on their faces, trying their best to emulate the sexualized humping of the six-year-old performer girl, as the white mommies jumped up in the seats and screamed in joyous approval and tried to dance along too.

This went on for half an hour.

Mothers were cheering for their own children to be brainwashed. It was literally one of the most sickening things I've ever witnessed.

I saw basically the same happen in a progressive city where I once lived. In a tony, mostly white enclave, black and Hispanic students were zoned to attend the public school and all hell broke loose. The editor of the de rigueur left-wing alt-weekly newspaper blamed the uproar on "class" rather than race. When it emerged his daughter attended school there all hell broke loose. From what I gather, the school is almost all black and Hispanic now.

343 I never liked the whole desegregation thing. I was in school when that stuff was going on. Busing had to be the worst of it.
All this was and is the Government socially experimenting with the masses. (for our own good, of course)
