Barbara Bush Dead at 92

RIP.

This follows swiftly upon her decision to forgo additional treatment for her illnesses and instead only receive comfort care.

7 Maybe the doctors told her there's nothing else that can be done.

It's not a bad thing when they say it. At least you know and can move on to the next thing...which is unpleasant but was inevitable anyway.

82 My mother died last December, aged 86. She died the day after my parents' 60th wedding anniversary. Mom was in hospice care and when I read that Mrs. Bush was having that I knew what it meant. (My dad's sister died this year a couple of months back, also in hospice - I know what "comfort care means. Aunt Margaret was 89, and the sweetest most Christian soul you should have ever met.)

Let us just avoid the scene from yesterday morning where our fire-eaters were saying very unkind things about Mrs. Bush, and just let her pass, mourned by her family and loved ones. I think the Horde can show more class than the usual fever swamps over on the Left side.

85 The story about her refusing treatment reminds me of my great-grandma, who I was really close to. She had colon cancer at 89 and after some efforts to treat it (which clearly weren't going anywhere) said she was just going to let the good Lord take her when He was ready. Died two months later. It was the right decision in retrospect, but at the time it was so, so hard for me to accept. God be with her loved ones.

Posted by: T at April 17, 2018 08:42 PM (MmeCn)

86 Agree with her or not, think of the political dynasty she had in her household at Christmas. It's fascinating. Two Presidents, Governor, congress. Etc. I am glad Jeb broke that streak mercifully but it's incredible if you stop and think about it. And you thought your family was interesting? Damn.

Hey, he and his rich donors should have gone with her gut instinct.

But of course she supported him once he decided to run.

Toughest old coot you could imagine. When he was 85 he was tilling the garden with a gas powered tiller. It got away from him and the blade gashed his calf. Cleaned it up, said "I'm fine" and refused to go to the hospital. Finished tilling 2 days later. They don't make them like him anymore.

During these types of things, I always wonder which is the best way to go. I had four grandparents that I knew all the way into my teens (and I was lucky to know them, all some of the best people I have ever known.)

My grandfather on my Mom's side was the first. He just dropped of a heart attack. It was hard. Very rough.

The other three lingered. That was also rough.

The only thing I got out of that whole deal, no matter how I go, I want to keep my mind. If that means foregoing palliative treatment, so be it.

And Dubya's time in the White House probably made it less likely that Jeb would eventually get the job. Considering how fast life speeds up as you age a hundred years kind of Doppler shifts into a period which is much much shorter. If you could average perception of time across a a lifespan a 100 year life in actual years is probably closer to 60 years in perceived time.

182 She promised voters that she would be a traditional first lady and campaigned actively for her husband. The campaign at times focused on the large Bush family, and contrasted her with the First Lady, Nancy Reagan, by highlighting her interest in domestic staples such as church, gardening, and time spent with family while placing less emphasis on style sense and fashion; she drew attention to both her famous white hair and disinterest in wearing designer clothes. She generally avoided discussion of political issues during the campaign, particularly those on which she and her husband differed, and those closely involved with the campaign have reported that she was actively involved in campaign strategy.

193 I'm not sure Barbara Bush was unquestionably the most gracious, though she had grace to spare. She had many good attributes, but the one I liked best was her sense of honesty. She had a way of taking the pass that rivalled anyone else, except maybe the G-E. Even then...she's among the last of a very old and rare vintage. My problems with others of her family have never really extended to her. Maybe because she was never in the game, and steadfastly refused to be drawn in by shrieking assholes.

Considering how fast life speeds up as you age a hundred years kind of Doppler shifts into a period which is much much shorter. If you could average perception of time across a a lifespan a 100 year life in actual years is probably closer to 60 years in perceived time.

I dunno, people are people. Any group large enough is going to have a few rotten apples.

Look at it this way, I think the internet is a net positive:

-I can look up anything. Sure it may not be true, but that was also the case when I looked things up in the student library at IU- with a lot less walking. (Although, to be fair, I really enjoyed finding old books way up on various floors, in the back and imagining whether I was the first person to touch them in decades.)

-We have the Horde. Being able to talk to others who share a common worldview is extremely beneficial, especially given the left's chosen tactics going back a century.

Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at April 17, 2018 09:39 PM (6b22r)

240 I see some wondering at her actual cause of death - but really, to get anywhere near 90 you have got to have been incredibly healthy for most all of your life. And after 90, it's just luck of the draw, something always comes along.

My wife and I think about that when watching my father in law fade, who's now 94. He's always been incredibly healthy, and now it's almost a curse because there is no one thing particularly wrong with him, but everything seems to be wearing out at about the same time. And even he says he's lived too long.

His last few years his body just started getting... old. I know it sounds funny... he was over 90, so yeah "old" but he never had anything really wrong with him, so it was sad to see.

He passed away 5 years ago at 95.

I've had a lot of family members (aunts, uncles, great-grandparents, great-greats of all sorts, etc) live to be over 90. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

He's always been incredibly healthy, and now it's almost a curse because there is no one thing particularly wrong with him, but everything seems to be wearing out at about the same time. And even he says he's lived too long.
Posted by: Tom Servo at April 17, 2018 09:40 PM (V2Yro)

I see that Prince Phillip is 94 and just had hip replacement surgery. It seems that if you make it into your 90s, then it is about things wearing out, and your desire to stay in the mortal world decreases too. That is why we celebrate those who make it past 100.

I feel about Queen Elizabeth & her husband like I do about the people we are losing. The last of a generation that held us steady, and the ones coming up are not up to their standard. Not even close.

My 85 year old mother and I talk regularly about how the Leftist/Globalist power structure has eliminated the traditional Democrat party of FDR, Truman, JFK, Scoop Jackson, Mike Mansfield, etc.

She was for Reagan in 1976, when Ford won. And in 1980, she got involved at the local level for Reagan.

She was a big Trumpster from the beginning of the primaries. She really disliked Trump's horndog tendencies, but she sluffed that off saying her 5 brothers who all were Marines were just as bad.

But she also was the first person I knew personally to say she wasn't voting for Trump to be her priest, but her president. And any American president had to be a badass in a previous life, because that is what it takes.

We still talk about how slimy the Trump haters act against him. And we talk about the slimy press who only push the anti-USA, pro-Globalist agenda.

We also talk about how classy Melania is as our First Lady.

I wish the Bush family peace, and thought the world of Barbara. I hope they go back into oil or pro baseball and away from politics.

Her husband was head of the CIA, for gosh sakes, so I am guessing she knew more than she let on about Globalists, and I would bet she kept her mouth shut because most women kept in bounds of their traditional leanings back then.

W. Bush , John McCain and Steve Forbes. Governor George W. Bush
wouldn't join the group until the third debate, which took place in
Manchester, NH on December 2. That day it was my job to make sure our
people and their McCain placards were evenly spread and make sure our
people and placards looked like they outnumbered the Bush people for
the photo op that evening. Seven hours I worked to get our people in
place. I was the last to place myself somewhere, but where? Guerrilla
theater works for me so I placed myself in with five Bush supporters
who were holding their Bush signs and they were not very pleased to see
I was going to hang with them. Well, I had my way them as I ran my
mouth book and verse on all the crap we had on Bush at the time. I
KILLED IT!!! One of them flipped out on me and started screaming. Bush
supporter: " YOU *%*^**^%$*ker! ~ YOU +#@%#%! Is there anything you like
