Saturday Night Joke

Two engineering students were biking across a university campus when one said, "Where did you get such a great bike?"

The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want.

The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, "Good choice: The clothes probably wouldn't have fit you anyway."

The old saying is, "Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good." In these 20 cases they were both lucky and good at surviving.

While the ocean is undoubtedly beautiful, it is also incredibly dangerous. It doesn’t matter if you’re a full-time fisherman with years of experience or a novice just starting out; between mechanical failures, unexpected weather, and even sea creatures, sometimes things just go very wrong.

If you were to find yourself stranded in the open ocean, would you know how to survive? If the answer is “no,” you might want to take a lesson from these 20 people. These are the very real stories of lucky souls who set out to sea and survived—in spite of the unthinkable.

Torture. Yesterday and today. Yesterday, the pear of anguish. Today, singers on You Tube.

Whether they like the macabre or enjoy the shiver they get when they see them, torture devices have always fascinated the public. Perhaps that’s why novels and movies are full of the most inventive torture methods that a writer can conjure up. But then again, so is history.

People have applied their imagination to inflicting pain in new, horrifying ways for thousands of years. But sometimes, when it comes to torture, reality and fantasy can get mixed up. In fact, many of the most famous torture devices from history actually seem to have only seen use in our collective imagination. The Iron Maiden, for instance, was probably nothing but a hoax dreamed up by someone who knew that the more disturbing a torture device is, the more people will pay money to see it.

As a parent, what would you do to avenge your murdered child? Meet André Bamberski, and take a look at his 30 year journey of chasing his child's murderer.

A father’s love knows no bounds. André Bamberski, a French citizen, would have moved heaven and earth for his daughter Kalinka Bamberski – a fact that became clear after her untimely and mysterious death. The teenage girl had been staying with her mother, Danièle Gonnin, and her stepfather, Dieter Krombach, when she suddenly died on July 9, 1982. An autopsy couldn't determine the cause of death, but Bamberski was certain it was the work of Krombach. He set off on a relentless quest for the truth, one that lasted 30 years, cost him his job, and alienated his family and friends.

How far would Bamberski go for justice? What would this grief-stricken father do to the man who took his wife and presumably raped and killed his 14-year-old daughter? His unbelievable true story raises questions about vigilante justice and paints a grim and heartbreaking portrait of a man's thirst for revenge.

Think of former President George H.W. Bush as you wish. But he served our country in WWII and damn near didn't make it out alive. Others didn't and it was a horrible ending.

“There is a Law of Nations, it is true,
But when the moment comes, remember,
The Strong eat up the Weak.”
-Line in a Japanese children’s song, circa 1880.

You probably think that you have a pretty solid understanding of the worst possible outcome if you go to war. Many people would say that it’s that you might die. Others might argue that it’s being terribly wounded. Or that you could be captured alive and held prisoner for God knows how many years.

That’s wrong. None of those outcomes are the worst.

The worst possible outcome is being eaten alive, piece by piece, like something out of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road.

And it happened not all that long ago during WWII on the Japanese island of Chichijima.

The incident is best chronicled in detail by James Bradley in his book Flyboys: A True Story Of Courage. A brief explanation is that, in 1944, during WWII, a group of nine American airmen were shot down on the island of Chichijima.

One, George H.W. Bush, would narrowly evade capture by the Japanese.

The rest were not so fortunate.

Accident or design? Crappy designs.

Were they by accident or by design? That is the main question your brain will ask you repeatedly while consuming these design fails. While I think we can all agree the most advertising and packaging designs are pretty awful, these are designs so crappy they could be considered literal works of fart. This collection of incredibly crappy designs come to your screen of choice via Crappy Design, a subreddit that makes marginal designers feel pretty good about themselves while celebrating all things Comic Sans.

Artificial Intelligence. The Fourth Industrial Revolution. Where is it headed?

We are forever being spun a negative story about AI: that it will cost us our jobs: 40 per cent of all jobs according to one oft-quoted statistic. Not everyone, however, is so pessimistic. The OECD has analysed, task by task, what it considers to be the potential of AI and concluded that it is more like eight per cent of current jobs which are at risk. There is a long history of forecasting employment doom from technology: it was predicted long ago that the accountancy profession would be broadly usurped by computers, yet it has continued to grow. What has tended to happen in the past, in all areas of the economy, is that technology takes over lower quality, routine jobs – jobs which, argues Sarah Drinkwater, head of Google’s Campus London, are ‘dehumanising’ in some respects – while generating parallel growth in higher-value jobs. Overall, employment has never been higher.

Childhood heroes respond to their fans.

NOT SO LONG AGO, WRITING physical fan letters was just about the only way for a regular person to communicate with someone famous. These days it’s not so unusual to get a quick Twitter reply from someone you admire, but in the pre-social media age, if you were lucky, you might’ve received a far more amazing artifact: a signed photo, or even a hand-written note. And boy are they delightful.

Besides J. J. Sefton are there any other Morons in NYC? It looks like there is at least one more.

This guy had a night to remember on the Lower East Side.

A man called 911 around 7:35 a.m. Friday because he was locked inside the Marshall Stack Bar on Rivington Street near Allen Street, the FDNY said.

Firefighters responded moments later, opened the door and let the man out.

Lately, fishing hasn't been too good. Perhaps, I need to reevaluate the rod and reel experience. h/t Hrothgar

Here's one way to cast your fishing line a little further.

Guns.com dug up an oldie from the Popular Mechanics archive in which we covered some seriously ingenious WWII airmen. These guys stationed in the Pacific used their grenade launcher to blast a baited hook and fishing line 200 yards out to sea. PM didn't say whether they caught anything.

If you are living under a false identity maybe you shouldn't advertise it in your Mom's obituary. Genius Award Winner.

OKLAHOMA CITY - The U.S. Marshals Service says a woman's obituary helped agents capture her fugitive son nearly four decades after he escaped from an Oklahoma prison.
The agency says 58-year-old Stephen Michael Paris was arrested without incident Thursday at an office in Houston where he worked under a pseudonym.

43 one way to cast your fishing line a little further

At South Point Hawaii the locals have an enviroment friendly and renewable way to cast their lines hundreds of feet.

South Point is the most southern point of any state, and as far south as you can drive on the big island of Hawaii. With stiff tradewinds out of the east the locals tie their lines to a cheap plastic grocery bag, hold up bag, it catches wind and flies west until the line runs out and the bag tears free, dropping the baited hook into the ocean.

58 Kind of an aside regarding Schultz's personalized letters: I grew up in Cody, Wyoming. In the spring, before the tourists descended like locusts, we locals would be treated to a free day at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, a world class museum located in a town of (at the time) less than 10,000. I would see the Winchester arms, and all the other things, but I would linger in the Charles Russell portion, because it not only featured his paintings, but numerous letters he wrote, which featured quick watercolor and ink drawings. They were works of art in their own right. He would be talking to an aunt or his ma, and would include a sketch of a guy looking off into the distance with his hat pushed back on his head.

Beautiful, brilliant. C.M. Russell is a gem.

79 The "Trump's attorney Michael Cohen went to Prague in 2016" fake news story is still being reported my multiple sources. It was a different Michael Cohen and the mistaken conflation of the two originated in illegal NSA intercept unmasking, and made its way into the piss dossier, and proves the circular nature of using the dossier to justify tbe unmasking.

This is so cold-blooded. It's already been publicly debunked by Jake Tapper among others and they just keep repeating it anyway.

81 43 one way to cast your fishing line a little further

At South Point Hawaii the locals have an enviroment friendly and renewable way to cast their lines hundreds of feet.

South Point is the most southern point of any state, and as far south as you can drive on the big island of Hawaii. With stiff tradewinds out of the east the locals tie their lines to a cheap plastic grocery bag, hold up bag, it catches wind and flies west until the line runs out and the bag tears free, dropping the baited hook into the ocean.

90 buzzion : when you live in a state long enough you get to see some nuances in local "establishments".

Tim Neville, de-facto leader of the CO Senate, is in a swing district. He gets reelected because he delivers to his base, and because he makes the independents laugh at the Left. I actually love this guy and I wish he'd donate extra testicular tissue to Gardner (no homo).

Neville however went for Cruz (as did I - I was a delegate then too) in 2016. Trump didn't have a constituency in 2016.

So there's a dynamic of now-Trump-leaning former-Cruz conservatives who do resist the Left. But then there are Coffmans and Gardners, who are timid, and obsessed with appealing to the middle.

Try reading Clarke's 3001. They find Frank Poole and revive him. But it turns out the Monolith on Europa is faulty because a chunk of Jupiter/Lucifer impacted the planet. How do we know this. Oh well Bowman the Starchild, HAL 9000, and Heywood Floyd of course. As ghosts in the machine as it were.

So Clarke decides to have their heroes, those ghosts, get Poole to get the human monkeys to crack open a black vault on the Moon loaded up with every conceivable computer virus to infect the monolith.

162 Ibguy, it has been our privilege to join you on your journey with Joyce this past year. I am praying for peace and comfort for her, you, and the rest of the family. It's so hard to say goodbye to our loved ones. All we can do is pray our way through it.

And boho, I can honestly say the vast majority of our friends have come from our church over the years. Some because of connections with our kids, and homeschooling, but also many just from seeing each other week after week at the same Mass and eventually striking up conversations. And not just with other married couples! We have several single friends from church that we are close enough to that we invite them to spend holidays with us. I pray that you will meet some great people there.

175 Two animal stories from this week that I did not have time to share on the pet thread because of having to leave for work:

The Bad: Was driving on circle 4 (kind of a proto bypass here in Lexington that circles the city) and traffic was backed up. Finally got to the blockage and saw the cause: a deer- a doe to be exact. It looked like she had a broken leg and was lying in the shoulder. Her eyes were wide open and she looked right into my eyes as I drove by.

I am a big softie when it comes to animals. I could hunt if I needed to, but I do not think I could ever do it for sport- although I do not begrudge those who do. It serves a useful purpose since we have culled a lot of natural predators. If the deer numbers were more in control, she would not have gotten so deep into town in the first place.

The Good. This is Lexington- there are a lot of horse farms here. I was driving to work and passed one of these and horses were out grazing. I saw a flash of brown in the corner of my eye and saw a young colt, running as hard as it could. Yay, it was frolicking.

176 South Point is the most southern point of any state,
and as far south as you can drive on the big island of Hawaii. With
stiff tradewinds out of the east the locals tie their lines to a cheap
plastic grocery bag, hold up bag, it catches wind and flies west until
the line runs out and the bag tears free, dropping the baited hook into
the ocean.

Posted by: Burnt Toast at April 14, 2018 09:59 PM (Eu5eZ)

And then the bag falls in the ocean, and winds up wrapped around some poor sea turtle's dick.
I'm no screaming tree-hugger or enviroweenie, but intentionally strewing the ocean with scrap plastic is really dumb.

Douglas Rain had originally been hired to provide narration to the movie. But when the narration was nixed, Kubrick hired Rain to re-voice HAL 9000 because Martin Balsam's version was too emotional. That Kubrick was in fact looking for an unctuous, patronizing, neuter quality. And HAL 9000 was originally named Athena.

I loved Clarke, especially his early stuff. His last book was Meh, but that was a step up from all novels after 2001. I have a very extensive Clarke collection, just like I have one of Heinlein's works, Asimov, E.R. Burroughs and Doc E.E. Smith.

His first short story sale, Rescue Party, was a classic that would bring tears of joy to my eyes, even after re-reading it. Now, Clarke himself said that as he got older, he started disliking it a lot when people said they liked that story best.

Try Clarke's Tales of the White Heart or The Nine Billion Names for God. You might even like those short stories.

Heh. Escaping prison doesn't bother me, as long as he didn't murder a guard to do it. Escaping prison has a long and glorious history in folklore, after all.
But if he has cleaned up his act and gone straight, why waste a prison cell on him, when there are far more worthy candidates out there? (stares pointedly at Hillary)

i can't say this often enough...

there is NO such thing as "routine" surgery.

long ago, a year or two after i started w*rking in healthcare, a gentleman in his late 50s/early 50s, came to our famous, and mostly deservedly so, hospital to have dual hip replacement surgery done, so he and his wife could enjoy the retirement he had just started/was getting ready to start.

wife was very much still a 1, as was the daughter. SiL was Harvard Med (doc/student?) and everyone was there for Dad's surgery.

hip # 1 went well, but, during #2, he threw a seizure. theyclosed him up, got him off the table and into ICU.

this was on a friday. all weekend long i, and others made phenobarbital drips that they ran into him to prevent MOAR seizures. on

monday, someone thought to run a blood level. it was well into toxic range. WELL into it. they D/Ced the drip. then waited for the body to filter it out, then ran an EEG: flat line... 0 brain activity.

everyone came to say good bye, then they wheeled him back into surgery, and the harvest teams took over. so yeah, i avoid surgery if at all possible, and want minimum anesthesia if you have to take the knife to me.

YMMV

While wearing a pair of "glasses" made from bent wire, and two slices cut from a large carrot.

Well, is there a Big Brother program by you? Or a United Way program? Because a woman can feel desperation, or feel overwhelmed by all that love, so maybe have some other interests instead of focusing on a girl. You could meet some people that way too...volunteering. By the time he died, he owned several thousand acres of prime farmland in the Cumberland area of Kentucky. (Advantage of getting their early, having powerful friends and a lot of strong sons) When he died, she was still in her 30's and she inherited most all of it.

So don't feel sorry for her - she went from a poor barefoot frontier girl to one of the richest women in the county in just a little over 20 years.

415 394 My wife had an ancestor named Achilles who fought in the Revolutionary War, and then went west with Daniel Boone to Kentucky. Old Achilles had 8 kids by his first wife, who died when he was 58. When he was 65, he married a 14 year old girl out on the frontier, and proceeded to have 7 more kids, the last being born when he was 82. He lived to be 88, and this in a day when the average life expectancy was still in the 30's.

My great great grandfather on my mom's side had a family in Norway--wife and 8 sons. He left for the US promising to send for them when he had the cash. He never did. Instead, he married again, and produced a family of seven kids, never telling his new wife about his old family.

Probably a good thing there wasn't phone service, or Skype.

Anywho, two families, one old world and one new world, and not discovered until somebody started genealogy and tracked this old billy goat down.

420 yankeefifth: article... fails to include the main point which is STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM THE OCEAN.

As they say, ^^this^^!! Oceans are why we have swimming pools.

I used to think lakes were okay, but even those...

Of course, where I was raised, and live, the "waves" are of grain or prairie grass. You could still get stung by the Dakota man o'wars, but likely won't drown.

We did live fourteen years on the shores of Lake Michigan, and we even let our children frolic in the foam, but, like everything in Chicago, it was terrifying. Still amazed we all survived.

Others've pointed out that she actually got a good deal. Past=different planet and all that, fourteen was not as much of a child in old days. She was more woman ready for life than most college gals today, I'd wager. And, no, sorry, May-December with an older man is not the same as with an older woman. Neither in vigor nor reproduction. Sorry, but also viva la difference.

And, gotta say, with that many kids, there's probably a lot of folks today, besides Tom Servo's wife, who had Achilles for an ancestor!!

First letter is Introvert/Extrovert most people know what that means

458 I think this topic was brought up a few nights ago, regarding the conduct of Germans vs the Japanese in WWII. But even if not...while taking nothing away from the horrific actions of the Nazis towards the civilian populations of occupied territories as well as POWs, they didn't hold a candle to the Japanese when it came to atrocities. The Rape of Nanking, the Bataan Death March, the live vivisection of POWs, stories of cannibalism such as the story above...merely the tip of the iceberg.

Germany wears the hairshirt to this day, to the point of national suicide, while Japan holds the attitude of "what atrocities?" and acts as if the nukes were dropped on them for no reason.

Japan is a really interesting case. It seems to be a study in a nation intentionally scrubbing their own history in order to mold their populace, but it has had unintended consequences.

The other thing is it seems to be a study of contrasts. I have known young Japanese guys who are vital, have wives and lots of kids. It is not all of them dying out.

478 Let me just remind everyone that the 14 yo/65 yo applied to Pioneer Days. So no hair color, and creams, and botox, and all the other stuff. So Christie would look 65 with gray hair, worn out by 7 children, et.al.

Things are waaayyyyy different today.

So I won't engage in the whole underage thing in present time. Which I find despicable and unlawful anyway.

The legal age of marriage in most states is 18. There are two that make it a little higher. But, the are parental consent and judicial consent exceptions that have allowed them to be very young, in some cases, no age limit at all.

There has been some movement to change that, but only recently.

In Tennessee, there were 3 marriages of *10 yr old* girls to men over 21. Don't believe me, look it up.

Then having little leshon nine months later? Then leshonde a year later?

I'm not defending it. It makes me sick, and those Tennessee cases were in 2001, which is one on the incidents that prompted that movement to raise the age.

My point was that many don't realize it has still been legal here in the US. Rare but still legal.

My paternal grandmother, born in 1893 was married at 16, to my grandfather was 19, just before his 20th birthday. I think they were worried she was gonna be an old maid.

Funny thing was, when one of her granddaughters was going to get married around age 22, she screamed, "That's too young!"

545 Bartender Slapweasel, in honor of Oklahoma liquor laws of only a couple of decades ago, I went to the liquor store and bought the tiniest bottle of rum, which I now turn over to you, so you can mark it with my club membership number, set it on the shelf, and thereafter you are authorized to "restock" my bottle endlessly and serve me drinks exclusively from that source. God forbid I bought rum but ordered tequila.

Such laws were incredibly oppressive, confusing, bizarre, and most importantly selectively enforced, and were only overturned when the state attorney began actually enforcing the law, and folks said enough, let booze be served as they do in civilized places.

But evil things can lead to good. I was in a bar with no little bottle and no membership, and there was a lovely young lady at the bar who said she was drinking tequila so I asked her to buy me a drink and it went well. Wonder where she is today.

So, a rum and oj in honor of that fine lass, please.

It was dark days, full of threats of WW3. We said, don't believe the dark predictions. We bet on a good future. We'll raise another soul for our Father.

We got twins.

Here's a suggestion: Go dry for a month; mark a calendar with, say, checkmarks to keep track; and then stop and think and compare how you feel then with how you felt before. And if you decide, then, to stay dry, it's a lot easier to do with a dry month aleady done.

Maybe the Japanese are canny enough to realize that they will be regarded as a "minority" and will thus get a pass, so they can dispense with the self flagellating bullshit.
