Ben Sasse just ended questioning by asking, rather too briefly for my tastes, about whether FaceBook specifically makes its service a dopamine-spiking machine. A former FaceBook vice president said that FaceBook keeps audiences locked in via "dopamine-driven feedback loops.""It literally is a point now where I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works. That is truly where we are," he said. "The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops that we have created are destroying how society works: no civil discourse, no cooperation, misinformation, mistruth. And it's not an American problem. This is not about Russian ads. This is a global problem."Correction: I originally wrote that the whistleblower said that Facebook deliberately codes dopamine-spiking features into its architecture. Reading the quote now, the VP does not say "deliberately;" he merely says it's present. A video below explains this. But Zuckerberg said he was unaware of this and that his employees didn't plan for this.
Facebook has pushed back on the former executive's comments, saying in a statement Tuesday that Palihapitiya has not worked there for more than six years and that it was "a very different company back then."

This is a widely believed misunderstanding. That What I've Learned guy, I think, corrected it for me.
People wrongly say dopamine is the PLEASURE brain hormone. In fact, it's the craving-pleasure brain hormone. It itself does not cause pleasure, but an urgent anxiety to get pleasure. The "pleasure" is felt when the anxiety-making effect of dopamine recedes because the pleasure has been found (and thus is no longer craved).

This is a major part of cigarette addiction and why people incorrectly think that cigarettes cause pleasure. We need the excitement of an unnecessary injection of emotional turmoil. Then I can just let the comments blow up and go lift.
BTW, one thing I STOPPED doing was posting anything along the lines of Battle of the Sexes. Anything that would get men and women feuding at each other.
Early in the blog's history, when I'd post something like that, I'd just watch the comments blow the F up and think "Okay that was a good post."
Something like two other bloggers' various opinionations about what defined "hot" in women, and which women, then, were definitionally incapable of any hotness.
But then, looking at the comments, they were blowing up because people were genuinely angry at each other and there were a lot of comments just because there was a lot of hurt feelings, lashing out, etc.
I stopped that pretty soon after. That's one case where I realized that the stress and angst of the subject just wasn't worth it for a big, active comment thread.

I realized my brain is a bit like Pavlov's dog, so I needed to reward it for behaviors I wanted to develop. Make it a game somehow. Instead of punishing myself for failing, or using apps that were business like and did not utilize that portion of our brain. It's also a bit of a pride killer and a humbling experience.
I'm trying out 3 now that work on that concept.

a useful, um, use of this is the gamification of learning or work. Turn learning into a game with points and power-ups and maybe some randomness and you can put the addictive effect to work for you.
I used to read a lot about game-ifying work and learning, but it hasn't really been well done except in a few scattered cases. I think mathematicians solved a very manhour-intensive problem by dividing the problem up into a thousand pieces which could be solved by game-like play among many users.
And I think Duolingo uses some game-like features to promote language learning (with some minor success -- I think it's helpful, but I think there needs to be more of it, or maybe there's just a limit to how helpful it can be).

I'm not kidding, I learn things from people here and that's my number one favorite thing to do. I don't learn well from a classroom or book, but I do from discussion and interaction with people. And I learn a lot from you people. It helps me sharpen my brain like the proverb says about iron sharpening iron. Even the clashes here I get something out of.

interesting. I've been thinking a lot about this lately. I'm thinking about spinning off a site based on the notion that people crave learning a lot more than they might think they do and might really enjoy a site with a bunch of folders and topics and a community that's also into learning.
I thought of this watching Jordan Peterson's explosive rise -- even tho I am only barely interested in his subject matter expertise (clinical psychiatry, Jungian archetypes, etc.), I do kind of get into learning a little bit about these things. Which in turn makes me want to listen to his other claims.

I'm working on ways to use that in a role playing game setting, to make it exciting and rewarding for players, although many of them are not the kind that respond well to the usual stimuli.
Gaming is mostly cerebral using the imagination which most modern people (particularly younger people) have virtually no experience exercising and are quickly bored by. Where are the pictures? Where is the music? What do I do with these dice? The computer is supposed to handle all that! I want a mod that puts boob jiggle into the game!
Another problem is that people really like multimedia, basically crayons and construction paper for people allegedly grown up. And again a typical RPG does not offer any of that.
So the idea is to find ways to ding people with little rewards to work toward that make them happy and want to go back to it, to make it fun for them. Achievements in games are all about that: they do nothing for you, but people love them because they feel as if its an accomplishment.

My 4th grade kids class use a game called Prodigy for math that the teacher can keep track of (just get minor grade credit), but it uses the points for solving dopinator. It really only works for the smarter kids vying for the top spot though.

We have a friend whose dad is a founder of a college in California. He loves to talk and be prompted to lecture. I swear she invites me every year to her Christmas open house so I will stand transfixed while her dad talks philosophy, religion, history for hours. I love it.

a useful, um, use of this is the gamification of learning or work. Turn learning into a game with points and power-ups and maybe some randomness and you can put the addictive effect to work for you.
I used to read a lot about game-ifying work and learning, but it hasn't really been well done except in a few scattered cases. I think mathematicians solved a very manhour-intensive problem by dividing the problem up into a thousand pieces which could be solved by game-like play among many users.
And I think Duolingo uses some game-like features to promote language learning (with some minor success -- I think it's helpful, but I think there needs to be more of it, or maybe there's just a limit to how helpful it can be).

It probably only has limited use. Like eventually your brain figures out that what you are doing is work even if it is "fun." Heck games themselves can get like that where you're having a good time playing them and then suddenly it becomes almost a chore to play it and trying to get that next big unlock or achievement. I've listened to people talking about getting the Platinum trophy on some games on Playstation and its very obvious that it is a chore to achieve that sometimes. It's no longer fun, you're just trying to get that last thing.

Exactly. So if you can tie that into a behavior or goal, it is a real reward. Or to something people care about. Those are the 3 I'm trying out and it has made a difference, which is why it is humbling. Because my brain responds positively to it and it has given me more success. I've decided to say, hey, I did not create my brain, it is how it is wired. So I just need to leverage it correctly. And if a game will improve my behaviors or goals, then why would I shun that...except for that ego thing.

exactly. At first I liked it and it spurred me along but then it was pretty easy to see this was work just-barely dressed up as FUN!
Maybe if they actually attached a genuine game to it, a real game, and the points you acquired in learning let you gear up your character (or car, etc.) in the attached game...?

Best comment I ever read came from Dr. Spank. I think it was on an ONT where one of the stories was about a nightclub fire in Russia that killed lots of people. They were having a big party for the 10th anniversary of the club's opening and there was a video included where they're dancing and then the fire breaks out.
Spank says No way that looks like 8th or 9th anniversary dancing at best.
I laughed so hard I had to wipe my face. Couldn't stop laughing. Even now years later it'll still pop into my head from time to time and I always laugh out loud.

I do like to achieve goals, because it feels as if I'm not a worthless lump of crap lying in bed hours every day to get something done, something I can point to, even if its in a game. but its not about feeling better, its about feeling as if I'm not entirely a waste of meat.

just an anecdote: I had a friend who wanted to excel on Madden football and he actually fucking checked genuine football coaching manuals out of the library and actually read them and took notes and made himself, to the extent possible, a "coach," JUST TO BEAT A VIDEOGAME.
He has an interesting mind: He's always looking for ways to hack systems, and he's willing to do a lot of work in order to find a "shortcut" or cheat to success.
(It winds up not being a shortcut, but I think he thinks of it as such, and gets off on exploiting the system, even if his research into how to exploit the system winds up taking more time than just learning how to do things the "proper" way. Interesting psychology.)

MORAL DILEMMA ALERT
A female relative of mine had a very sleazy criminal boyfriend who basically was a drug dealer and also a fence of stolen goods.
They were together for years -- decades, actually. Then, luckily, he died about three years ago, from complications from lifelong drug abuse. All his stuff passed into the possession of my relative, since the guy's family had gone no-contact with him long ago.
Unfortunately, my relative also just died earlier this year. And she didn't have many possessions, but what few she did have ended up being given to me, since nobody else wanted them.
Now here's where it gets interesting. Buried at the bottom of a box of her possessions was a cookie-tin which when opened revealed a collection of antique baseball cards. And I remembered that the now-dead boyfriend had once mentioned that he had received, as part of his stolen-goods fence business, some valuable baseball cards which he said he was hiding away as a sort of nest egg for a rainy day emergency.
But now those cards have fallen in my lap.
I know for absolute sure that these cards were stolen, probably during a house burglary, long ago. But I have no way to track the original owners.
I also know they're likely to vey very valuable. I haven't inspected them yet, but I'm pretty sure they're highly sought after.
What do I do? If I sell them, am I profiting from crime? If I throw them away, I'm just wasting money for no reason. If I advertise them try to find the original owner, every con artist within a hundred miles will come out of the woodwork claiming them as his.

Or, you can sell them in a charity auction with full disclosure as there is really no way of identifying a specific baseball card. Unless it's a crazy rare card.

MORAL DILEMMA ALERT
A female relative of mine had a very sleazy criminal boyfriend who basically was a drug dealer and also a fence of stolen goods.
They were together for years -- decades, actually. Then, luckily, he died about three years ago, from complications from lifelong drug abuse. All his stuff passed into the possession of my relative, since the guy's family had gone no-contact with him long ago.
Unfortunately, my relative also just died earlier this year. And she didn't have many possessions, but what few she did have ended up being given to me, since nobody else wanted them.
Now here's where it gets interesting. Buried at the bottom of a box of her possessions was a cookie-tin which when opened revealed a collection of antique baseball cards. And I remembered that the now-dead boyfriend had once mentioned that he had received, as part of his stolen-goods fence business, some valuable baseball cards which he said he was hiding away as a sort of nest egg for a rainy day emergency.
But now those cards have fallen in my lap.
I know for absolute sure that these cards were stolen, probably during a house burglary, long ago. But I have no way to track the original owners.
I also know they're likely to vey very valuable. I haven't inspected them yet, but I'm pretty sure they're highly sought after.
What do I do? If I sell them, am I profiting from crime? If I throw them away, I'm just wasting money for no reason. If I advertise them try to find the original owner, every con artist within a hundred miles will come out of the woodwork claiming them as his.

Sometimes, you just have good fortune. Leave it at that. If you could determine the rightful owner, then you should do the right thing and return them. But since you cannot, and trying to do so will only trigger every con artist around, enjoy the proceeds.
Or here's an idea: give the proceeds to the Gun Owners Of America, the Heritage Foundation, or some other patriot group.

The problem with going to the police is that cops are people, too, and not always very ethical ones.
If they are valuable, get them appraised first, and any good appraiser may know if they are hot--if any are particularly valuable. Then, you turn that card in to the cops.
Otherwise, I'd sell 'em, or keep 'em, as you see fit.

Unless....there is the possibility that you could be held liable for having the cards. In that case, perhaps you should speak with a lawyer (in confidence) and ask what possible liability there would be in your selling these cards.
If there is any possibility that you could be held liable, take them to the police and let them deal with it.
My dad grew up with Stan Musial, who sent him full sets of cards from all the teams from 41-44. Many of them signed. My brother got the cards before the rest of us knew about them, and sold them for booze money. So, on this side of that coin, I would hope that someone either enjoyed the cards, or used the money for good.

You're way overthinking this. From what you say, it sounds as if the cards might even be past the statute of limitations - though you have no way of knowing. Even so, third hand I think the issue is moot. I would just take possession of the cards as part of the estate and do with them whatever you want.

Unless the cards have some sort of unique to the card identifier, or are marked by the original owner so that they can be identified without seeing them before hand, there's not much point in trying to do the right thing. If you hand them over to the police, some cop may end up keeping them, or they'll sit in a box in storage forever unclaimed anyway... or claimed by a con. They may not even be from one single original owner. Best hope of getting them returned, if is a couple are so rare, that the cops have a record of their theft and there's only one of it's kind listed as missing for say the last decade or 2. But which precinct/county/state? Who knows where he ripped them off.

Stan Musial memorabilia and collectables are quite valuable. Anything up to around 1960 is, really. That was around when kids stopped destroying them and realized they might be valuable and collectible.
What really killed the collectible card market though was tons of new companies showing up printing a bazillion cards of everyone including variants like holographic and foil cards, basically glutting the market with crap. When that happened (roughly late 80s) it ruined the entire industry, and nothing after that is worth a damn.

He and I weren't close-he was abusive to me when I was little-smashing me into a coffee table and splitting my head open, cutting off all of my hair because he was angry with me-and there was 19 years difference in our ages-but I wish he were whole and healthy and around.

Maybe I find it refreshing that Fincher says most men crave sex and most women crave social status and money. These are base motivations for everybody. Anyway, I just got it in change so I didn't feel the least bit guilty receiving "stolen property". I kept it, but it probably isn't worth more than a couple bucks in its circulated state.

Don't tell the dealer the story just get them valued, and if he recognizes the collection then maybe you have something. Its been quite a while though, guy might be dead.
