Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Cruz Grills Mark Zuckerberg On Whether FaceBook is a "Neutral Public Forum"He only had five minutes of time. He did ask good questions during that time. Ben Sasse just ended questioning by asking, rather too briefly for my tastes, about whether FaceBook specifically makes its service a dopamine-spiking machine. A former FaceBook vice president said that FaceBook keeps audiences locked in via "dopamine-driven feedback loops.""It literally is a point now where I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works. That is truly where we are," he said. "The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops that we have created are destroying how society works: no civil discourse, no cooperation, misinformation, mistruth. And it's not an American problem. This is not about Russian ads. This is a global problem."Correction: I originally wrote that the whistleblower said that Facebook deliberately codes dopamine-spiking features into its architecture. Reading the quote now, the VP does not say "deliberately;" he merely says it's present. A video below explains this. But Zuckerberg said he was unaware of this and that his employees didn't plan for this. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

>>>42 Ace o' Spades is highly addictive.
The dopamine feedback loop is apparently related to the casino effect -- we crave the resolution of an outcome (the spin of a roulette wheel) most when we have no control over it. Working towards a goal, when most of the variables are under your control, is less addictive. Apparently social media companies get addictive by people waiting to see if their post or tweet or picture gets liked. It's like a spin of the roulette wheel. Now, here at Ace of Spades HQ, I have tried to create this same sense of "this is all random and I don't know what's going to happen" by occasionally being friendly and occasionally being a total dick and banning people for little to no reason at all. You never know what you'll get; sometimes I'll be friendly and even-tempered, other times I'll ban you for saying the word L*NGB*W. It's this kind of built-in randomness that makes the site addictive, and I'm proud to be using this cutting edge psychological manipulation as part of the site's appeal. Dopamine is the wanting/craving hormone - when you satisfy the craving, dopamine recedes, which is felt in the body as relief from craving and thus pleasurable -- and any addict finds his dopamine spiking when he's away form his drug of choice.

This is a widely believed misunderstanding. That What I've Learned guy, I think, corrected it for me. People wrongly say dopamine is the PLEASURE brain hormone. In fact, it's the craving-pleasure brain hormone. It itself does not cause pleasure, but an urgent anxiety to get pleasure. The "pleasure" is felt when the anxiety-making effect of dopamine recedes because the pleasure has been found (and thus is no longer craved). Posted by: ace at April 10, 2018 05:30 PM (8rNrN) 87

"Dopamine spiking" is a heck of a lot scarier-sounding than "ads that make give viewers a positive response," which has been the goal of ad agencies since forever.
In related news, other "dopamine-spiking" activities include watching sunsets, walking through parks, and eating a good pizza. Posted by: MW at April 10, 2018 05:32 PM (wNx6K) 96
so dopamine GOING AWAY gives a feeling of relief/satisfaction. Dopamine itself causes craving, which is anxiety and stress producing.
This is a major part of cigarette addiction and why people incorrectly think that cigarettes cause pleasure. In fact, withdrawal symptoms from the last cigarette you smoked cause a spike in dopamine, which causes anxiety (nic-fitting), and then having the cigarette satisfies the dopamine's craving. And then, the dopamine LEAVING the brain is experienced as relief and pleasure. Posted by: ace at April 10, 2018 05:32 PM (8rNrN) 97
Zuckerfuckerbooger's voice can't be this annoying naturally.

But it is deliberate.
They use A/B testing to insure people keep coming back. This is intentional. They do not design features thinking "this will look nice," or "this will be useful to society," they design features and test/modify/retain those that keep people addicted. This is a science to get the most clicks and page views, and to put the user in a state of emotion because that is what drives them to click, buy, and participate. (CNN)Snowfall across the great white continent of Antarctica is increasing, according to a study released this week by an international team led by the British Antarctic Survey. The team analyzed 79 ice cores from across Antarctica that provide detailed information on how much snow has fallen over hundreds of years, and it found a 10% increase in snowfall over the past two centuries. This contradicts studies that found that Antarctic snowfall has remained largely constant over the past several decades to centuries. But those studies analyzed only a few ice cores, whereas this comprehensive look at the continent gives a much more thorough view of how weather patterns have changed the polar weather. ... So more snow equals more Global Warming.....weren't the Polar Ice Caps supposed to be gone by now? Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at April 10, 2018 05:41 PM (+Dllb) 161

I do too. It just feels "right." We need the excitement of an unnecessary injection of emotional turmoil. Then I can just let the comments blow up and go lift. BTW, one thing I STOPPED doing was posting anything along the lines of Battle of the Sexes. Anything that would get men and women feuding at each other. Early in the blog's history, when I'd post something like that, I'd just watch the comments blow the F up and think "Okay that was a good post." Something like two other bloggers' various opinionations about what defined "hot" in women, and which women, then, were definitionally incapable of any hotness. But then, looking at the comments, they were blowing up because people were genuinely angry at each other and there were a lot of comments just because there was a lot of hurt feelings, lashing out, etc. I stopped that pretty soon after. That's one case where I realized that the stress and angst of the subject just wasn't worth it for a big, active comment thread. Posted by: ace at April 10, 2018 05:41 PM (8rNrN) 172

Once I learned about the dopamine fix in brain being a real thing, I started looking for apps that used that concept in a positive way.
I realized my brain is a bit like Pavlov's dog, so I needed to reward it for behaviors I wanted to develop. Make it a game somehow. Instead of punishing myself for failing, or using apps that were business like and did not utilize that portion of our brain. It's also a bit of a pride killer and a humbling experience. a useful, um, use of this is the gamification of learning or work. Turn learning into a game with points and power-ups and maybe some randomness and you can put the addictive effect to work for you. I used to read a lot about game-ifying work and learning, but it hasn't really been well done except in a few scattered cases. I think mathematicians solved a very manhour-intensive problem by dividing the problem up into a thousand pieces which could be solved by game-like play among many users. And I think Duolingo uses some game-like features to promote language learning (with some minor success -- I think it's helpful, but I think there needs to be more of it, or maybe there's just a limit to how helpful it can be). He'll do what I try to, where I find a story or event that makes the issue come to life for people or illustrates it in a fresh way to people at the time, and then pulls it apart to see why things work that way. Once I learned about the dopamine fix in brain being a real thing, I started looking for apps that used that concept in a positive way.
I'm working on ways to use that in a role playing game setting, to make it exciting and rewarding for players, although many of them are not the kind that respond well to the usual stimuli. Gaming is mostly cerebral using the imagination which most modern people (particularly younger people) have virtually no experience exercising and are quickly bored by. Where are the pictures? Where is the music? What do I do with these dice? The computer is supposed to handle all that! I want a mod that puts boob jiggle into the game! Another problem is that people really like multimedia, basically crayons and construction paper for people allegedly grown up. And again a typical RPG does not offer any of that. So the idea is to find ways to ding people with little rewards to work toward that make them happy and want to go back to it, to make it fun for them. Achievements in games are all about that: they do nothing for you, but people love them because they feel as if its an accomplishment. 241 >>> Once I learned about the dopamine fix in brain being a real thing, I started looking for apps that used that concept in a positive way.
a useful, um, use of this is the gamification of learning or work. Posted by: ace at April 10, 2018 05:51 PM (8rNrN) It probably only has limited use. Like eventually your brain figures out that what you are doing is work even if it is "fun." Heck games themselves can get like that where you're having a good time playing them and then suddenly it becomes almost a chore to play it and trying to get that next big unlock or achievement. I've listened to people talking about getting the Platinum trophy on some games on Playstation and its very obvious that it is a chore to achieve that sometimes. It's no longer fun, you're just trying to get that last thing. Posted by: buzzion at April 10, 2018 05:59 PM (lKs2v) 303

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 10, 2018 05:56 PM (39g3+) Exactly. So if you can tie that into a behavior or goal, it is a real reward. Or to something people care about. Those are the 3 I'm trying out and it has made a difference, which is why it is humbling. Because my brain responds positively to it and it has given me more success. I've decided to say, hey, I did not create my brain, it is how it is wired. So I just need to leverage it correctly. But simultaneously, in a different dank corner of the internet, there's a new fetish for pictures of female bodybuilders who take a lot of steroids and testosterone for muscle growth, and as a side-effect their clitorises start growing to ludicrous dimensions. But when you place to two porn genres side by side, you begin to realize: Hey, we're just about reaching true equality of the sexes here, because there really isn't that much size differential between the dinky-dick cuck brigade and the hormonal gigantism of the muscle-bound she-men. They were having a big party for the 10th anniversary of the club's opening and there was a video included where they're dancing and then the fire breaks out. Spank says No way that looks like 8th or 9th anniversary dancing at best. I laughed so hard I had to wipe my face. Couldn't stop laughing. No, ace you have enough good content over the years to turn into a book but I'm not sure what the sales would be for something like that (I mean beyond the horde). Its not that you don't have amusing and discerning thoughts that are well presented, its that the market for that kind of book is pretty limited unless you get on Oprah or turn it into some spiritual category or diet.

I know, and it is fascinating. That people are willing to work that hard for a virtual trophy even when it is no longer enjoyable. It shows how the brain is over-riding the mind. That is something that can be harnessed in either a positive or negative way for humanity. just an anecdote: I had a friend who wanted to excel on Madden football and he actually fucking checked genuine football coaching manuals out of the library and actually read them and took notes and made himself, to the extent possible, a "coach," JUST TO BEAT A VIDEOGAME. He has an interesting mind: He's always looking for ways to hack systems, and he's willing to do a lot of work in order to find a "shortcut" or cheat to success. (It winds up not being a shortcut, but I think he thinks of it as such, and gets off on exploiting the system, even if his research into how to exploit the system winds up taking more time than just learning how to do things the "proper" way. Interesting psychology.) Posted by: ace at April 10, 2018 06:09 PM (8rNrN) 357

One of the many things I found fascinating when I got here was the content provided for ONTs.
People would thank the COB. There might be some discussion on it, and then it was all comments that had nothing to do with the comtent. I still find it rather hilarious. There has been ONT content where I would think a whole thread could be devoted. For instance, one time it was the top 100 comedy ratings. A surefire war thread of opinions. But...nothing. It may be bcz they are "school nights" and many of us need to be sleeping for the next workday so can't get to it. Really, I think you could cull some of the ONT content for thread topics. The real question is exactly what we can do about these shits. Regulation would simply be shooting ourselves. It would be merely handing over the "matter" to the kind of straight-arrow stand-up government employees we see at work in all our stories. It's unclear just how we'd got about "breaking them up", or what that would lead to.
Now, some kind of liability, allowing Diamond and Silk to own Zuck's house, or giving Prager a controlling share of their stock, that would work if we could find a way to do it. Posted by: George LeS at April 10, 2018 06:22 PM (+TcCF) 434
Hmmm, I'm vehemently undecided on the whole deliberately-addictive thing. Especially when it's behavioral, not physical/chemical.
Mostly because - if people are to be regarded as people, with any agency and accountability ...... they sort of are responsible for what they do with their time. On the "ripping society apart" thing, which is similar to stuff heard frequently - usually from shallow idiots like Obama - not so undecided there. It's ridiculous. Society is not being ripped apart. It's being degraded, seriously, by several things, mostly a collapse of standards and mindsets, ethics. Toys/tools like "social media" are not the problem, they're not even *a* problem. The most clueless and damaging people I know were exactly that way years before social media existed. For reasons having nothing to do, obviously, with social media. Like everything that is hugely popular, there will come a time when its just not popular any longer. Hula Hoops are a short term buzz, something that blasted on the scene then died. Television was a longer-term thing that generated genuine concern over its effects and mesmerizing power. People would just sit all day staring at that screen bathing in the cathode rays.
Books were written about the concerns, songs were sung, laws (fairness doctrine, for example) were passed. Sermons were preached. Now, people really don't watch all that much TV any more. It comes and goes, over time. Eventually Facebook will be relegated to the same memory hole as AOL Chat. Ben Sasse just ended questioning by asking, rather too briefly for my tastes, about whether FaceBook specifically makes its service a dopamine-spiking machine. A former FaceBook vice president said that FaceBook keeps audiences locked in via "dopamine-driven feedback loops."
That's retarded. The Farcebook people are a little too self-important and insane about the value and power of their application. It's a friggin forum with pictures and video. Big whoop. "It literally is a point now where I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works. That is truly where we are," he said. That's even more retarded. He probably would have said the same thing about the telephone ... and the telegraph before that, I figure. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at April 10, 2018 06:29 PM (8gDQu) 465

Isn't it simple? Not easy, but simple. Either Farcebook is, or is not, a utility or a public accommodation or a common carrier. Fairly clear long-standing rules apply, depending on that status.
Unless there is a contractual obligation Farcebook violates with their censorship or favoritism, I don't see the issue. Unless, in turn, it is deemed a public accommodation or common carrier. Posted by: rhomboid at April 10, 2018 06:29 PM (Dhcvl) 471

Speaking of baseball cards...
MORAL DILEMMA ALERT A female relative of mine had a very sleazy criminal boyfriend who basically was a drug dealer and also a fence of stolen goods. They were together for years -- decades, actually. Then, luckily, he died about three years ago, from complications from lifelong drug abuse. All his stuff passed into the possession of my relative, since the guy's family had gone no-contact with him long ago. Unfortunately, my relative also just died earlier this year. And she didn't have many possessions, but what few she did have ended up being given to me, since nobody else wanted them. Now here's where it gets interesting. Buried at the bottom of a box of her possessions was a cookie-tin which when opened revealed a collection of antique baseball cards. And I remembered that the now-dead boyfriend had once mentioned that he had received, as part of his stolen-goods fence business, some valuable baseball cards which he said he was hiding away as a sort of nest egg for a rainy day emergency. But now those cards have fallen in my lap. I know for absolute sure that these cards were stolen, probably during a house burglary, long ago. But I have no way to track the original owners. I also know they're likely to vey very valuable. I haven't inspected them yet, but I'm pretty sure they're highly sought after. What do I do? If I sell them, am I profiting from crime? If I throw them away, I'm just wasting money for no reason. If I advertise them try to find the original owner, every con artist within a hundred miles will come out of the woodwork claiming them as his. Halp! Zombie - Don't show the cards to anyone. Photograph a sample, say 5 or 10 cards and post on a popular site under a throwaway account saying that they are part of a suspected stolen cache of cards, and if anyone had their cards stolen, they can provide you with a convincing inventory for consideration.

the cards are in clean shape and they end up in the hands of the Police or anyone but a rep of the insurance company, they will get destroyed, stolen, or 'lost'. Which is also stolen. In the broad canvass of crazy being implemented in California, painting streets white is kind of a shrug to me. I can see the logic of it: blacktop heats up a lot and contributes significantly to urban heat island effect. Its a rather major expense and something that really won't help any (except blind drivers and make lanes more puzzling to pick out) but its kind of low on my outrage priority list.
Much higher is this bad boy: http://tinyurl.com/y9husbw4 Its getting very little notice, but its pretty godawful "This bill would require any person who operates a social media, as defined, Internet Web site with a physical presence in California to develop a strategic plan to verify news stories shared on its Web site. The bill would require the plan to include, among other things, a plan to mitigate the spread of false information through news stories, the utilization of fact-checkers to verify news stories, providing outreach to social media users, and placing a warning on a news story containing false information." In other words, if a story is deemed to be false, you can be held liable for it and punished under California law. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 10, 2018 06:40 PM (39g3+) 531

Zombie, sell the cards, and donate a portion of the proceeds to the charity of your choice. Then put the rest in the bank for a rainy day. You've been given a blessing, it's up to you how you deal with it.
Unless....there is the possibility that you could be held liable for having the cards. In that case, perhaps you should speak with a lawyer (in confidence) and ask what possible liability there would be in your selling these cards. If there is any possibility that you could be held liable, take them to the police and let them deal with it. My dad grew up with Stan Musial, who sent him full sets of cards from all the teams from 41-44. Many of them signed. My brother got the cards before the rest of us knew about them, and sold them for booze money. You're way overthinking this. From what you say, it sounds as if the cards might even be past the statute of limitations - though you have no way of knowing. Even so, third hand I think the issue is moot. I would just take possession of the cards as part of the estate and do with them whatever you want. The issue I see with Fakebook and Twitter etc. banning conservative thought is that they are private companies. On a smaller scale it's no different than Ace banning you because you're an asshole or deemed one. They can do it and should be able to. Do I like that Fakebook Twat etc. ban you? Hell No I don't. But do I want government getting involved? The data selling is another issue. But if they're private companies offering a "free" service. Well then what do you do? I wish I was a billionaire or could make a conservative version of these web services. But the LAST thing we should want is the government regulating that.

Halp! Posted by: zombie at April 10, 2018 06:30 PM Unless the cards have some sort of unique to the card identifier, or are marked by the original owner so that they can be identified without seeing them before hand, there's not much point in trying to do the right thing. Stan Musial memorabilia and collectables are quite valuable. Anything up to around 1960 is, really. That was around when kids stopped destroying them and realized they might be valuable and collectible. What really killed the collectible card market though was tons of new companies showing up printing a bazillion cards of everyone including variants like holographic and foil cards, basically glutting the market with crap. When that happened (roughly late 80s) it ruined the entire industry, and nothing after that is worth a damn. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 10, 2018 06:49 PM (39g3+) 576

Several years ago I got a 1971-S dime in change. Those were only issued in proof sets and never put into general circulation, so it was beyond question that the coin was stolen. The idiot broke up the set and spent it as change, although I guess it would have been risky for the thief to try to sell the stolen proof set.
Anyway, I just got it in change so I didn't feel the least bit guilty receiving "stolen property". I kept it, but it probably isn't worth more than a couple bucks in its circulated state. Posted by: rickl at April 10, 2018 06:53 PM (sdi6R) 586
