Bomber Self-Identified as a Conservative

It's just news and I need a post -- I'm not baiting anyone. The media is going to read a lot into this while ignoring the fact that the country's death rows are stocked with Democrats.

This isn't a motive, but expect some breathless reporting from Jake Clapper.

Though he identified as conservative, he also had civil libertarian leanings regarding sex-offender registries:

On the blog, Conditt described himself as a conservative. He wrote that he was against gay marriage and abortion and in favor of the death penalty.

He also wrote that he supported doing away with the sex offender registration system.

"So you have a guy who committed a crime. Will putting him on a (sex offender) list make it better? wouldn’t this only make people shun him, keep him from getting a job, and making friends? Just for a crime that he may have committed over 15 years ago as a adolescent? On a side note, one fifth of all rapes are committed by a juvenile," Conditt wrote.

Here are pictures of the dead bomber at the FedEx store, wearing gloves on a hot day (!) and an absurd daffodil-yellow clown wig to hide his brown hair.

Say, didn't someone say the shots would show him in light disguise with a hat?

Shortly before his death, he was looking up new addresses, presumably to send bombs to, a search of his computer showed.

Oh, by the way, here was the profile the cops built up of the bomber. It's not much, but it's something:

While the suspect who took his own life has been only identified thus far as a 24-year-old white man, the former ATF agent in charge had already predicted that the suspect was:

-- 20 to 30 years old
-- Educated
-- Mostly likely a local resident

I don't know about "educated." He went to community college but did not graduate. So he was high school educated with some credits in community college. I don't know if that makes him "educated;" seems "average education" would be more accurate.

They probably got that from the idea that he thinks he's smarter than people. Which is something you might guess about the perp in this kind of crime, that he's playing games with the police and all.

But that doesn't prove education; it proves arrogance, and maybe even more insecurity underlying that arrogance.

I'd say that a more defensible profile would say that he thought of himself as educated, despite not having more than average education, a trait he shares with most liberals.

The "local resident" call was obvious.

The call that he was 20-30 -- not in his 20s or 30s, but 20 to 30 --is pretty darned good. I wonder why they'd guess him at that young age.

One possibility is that the batteries he used in his bombs were "exotic." Maybe they're batteries people use in some kind of tech associated with younger people. Maybe they batteries are only advertised in, say, video gamer magazines, which would mostly skew younger.

71 Thing is, there is no consistent conservative philosophy, other than adhering to traditional values and norms. Take tariffs. Our founders thought they were a useful tool, both to fund our government as well as to protect domestic industries. Many people who call themselves conservatives today claim that protectionism is not conservative.

It all depends on which values you are focusing on (and during which period of time) when you look to tradition.

But, very few people would consider blowing up random, non-combative, fellow citizens with package bombs to be a traditional value.

I get it if someone is, say, pro abortion and starts blowing up churches because they are virulently pro abortion. I could further understand how one might say- well that's a sacred cow of Democrats, so - yeah.

But that someone took action is circumstantial to each case. You would have to conclude they are nuts to begin with, perhaps someone or something they associated with stepped on that "nut" button, and they sprang into action.

111 in terms of civil rights, I actually agree with his views about the sex offender registry - BUT - I have also decided that saying anything along those lines elicits so much scorn, and so many raised eyebrows from anyone you say it to, that it's better for me just to self censor and never say anything about it at all (except for this instance) since I certainly do not have any personal stake in that fight.

And I do think it is regrettable that now there are so many issues and topics where intelligent people know that the best thing is just to keep quiet and never engage in any discussion on them, because the penalty for espousing a non-mainstream attitude is so high. America really did not used to be like that, but it is now.

1. Notice how the media waited to report the name of the killer compared to past shady mass shootings. They played by the Columbine rules.
B. His Facebook was completely scrubbed excerpt for 15 friends. White kid who was raised Mormon and homeschooled who feel into nihilism and became angry with the society that blames white men and boys for everything.
III. He flipped and went full Joker and just wanted to see the world burn.
d. I would not discount another bomber. This kid seems to be the submissive one. Somebody around his age or slightly older was teaching him this shit. It's my guess.

Conclusion: I'm surprised we have not seen more of this and I wonder if this is just the beginning. The war on men and boys (white and Christian) is very real and there will be blowback.

149 As an aside on the education/intelligence issue.

Have been reading some IQ stuff recently for work.

Interesting to find that people tend to group themselves socially by IQ. You tend to make friends with people who get your humor and share your experiences. Some life experiences are fairly universal (kid issues/death) and span he gaps. Other experiences - getting junior into an ivy league school are separators.

Also, the clear majority of people in this country are not as smart as the people who post here. (Even that banana idiot was probably smarter than average)

When you are above average intelligence it is difficult to grasp how difficult life is for someone who is on the low end of even average intelligence. They are literally falling behind the curve and have to work very hard to keep up with those on the front of the curve.

IQ privilege. Until you factor in the depression/suicide/addiction rates, I'm guessing.

Interesting to me, anyway.

Thanks to MP4 for mentioning Ravel's "Pavane for a Dead Princess". The instrumentality of the orchestral version reminds me of the New World Symphony: lovely and evocative of longing. But the melody translates well to a solo instrument like classical guitar.

Free-trade and open borders have nothing to do with each other. Most people who advocate both either are beneficiaries of both policies or are anarchist/libertarian who believe the federal gov shouldn't regulate those things.

Gains from trade is a large economic benefit that has been well understood for over 200 years.

Open borders leads to wage equalization between populations. This has clear downsides when dealing with dissimilar countries.

As far as this being a random attack, that is the nightmare scenario.

Look at that waste of DNA in Tampa that was, literally, walking up to people and executing them and walking away. That they caught him after only 4 murders is nigh to a miracle. Oh and they only caught him because he asked a co-worker at McDonald's to hold onto a gun for safe keeping and the co-worker called the cops. That's not a slam on the cops, by the way. In that case there was barely any evidence from which they could start an investigation.

I will repeat my belief about the Las Vegas shooter. We do not know the motive and will never know the motive because there was no motive. He just wanted to kill as many people as he could because he could. I believe this because that is the nightmare scenario.

This guy kept finding lost early Mormon documents and making big bucks. Until it started to unravel. Two critics got bombs. And as the police were investigating he blew himself up but not lethally.

321 Teachable moment for the young students:

You see, no matter your laws say, there are evil people who want to kill. Even people who are your own age.

This isn't a problem created by the older generation. This is the human condition.

There will be murderers in your generation as well and those that will follow.

The point is this: If you can't stop people from killing, why would you want to take away the means to defend yourself?

Yes, that means the right to have a gun. It is not something the NRA thought up. It's something that has been necessary since the beginning of humankind.

Okay, but maybe make an exception when there is an actual active bomber?

We have a friend who got some training in the profiles on these guys in law enforcement or somewhere.

One of the things they like to do is prove they have skills to build all sorts of different bombs, and this guy seemed to be doing that.

Hand delivered packages, then tripwire.

Then he mails some. You would think package carriers would know that one of the known profiles of bombers is to try to get a hat trick of all the different bomb types, so to be on alert even if the bomber hasn't mailed one yet.

Contrast that with the reality of the political pressure to reduce sentences and parole even violent felons early because that's how "enlightened" Europe does things.

The left isn't keen on discussing recidivisum rates in general, but I think even they understand that there are people that warrant additional caution after release.

========

There's a certain type of morality ("the end justifies the means", "the greatest good for the greatest number of people") called consequentialism. I think that is the rot that is the source of liberalism. If you *think* some action has good consequences in the long term, that justifies you doing things that would otherwise be immoral. Oppressing people, stealing from them, killing them (Stalin killing kulaks to implement his 5 year plans), regulating them to death, circumventing existing laws like the Obama administration because it would take too long to do things the proper way by getting legislation passed.

So my definition of conservative would be anyone who rejects consequentialism, because then you are left with traditional moral rules that cannot be overridden merely because you *think* your stupid theory will create utopia.

And public urination should not be a sex offense, if the person is making at least a token effort to be discrete about it.

Austin's weirdness also has become a bit "corporate" and "sanitized" in recent years, at least in certain quarters/to an extent. I attribute it to the influx of wealth into the area. 466 Sorry, but respectfully disagree. Sex is a primordial force that transcends - and therefore is impervious to -rational analysis or incentives. Someone who is sexually attracted to children, or given to perpetrating violent sexual attacks, I don't believe will EVER change, or indeed CAN ever change.

Assuming that's true, its also true of arsonists, murders, and thieves, at least according to law enforcement officials, psychologists, and historians. A rapist has a messed up head that compels them to do evil crap, but that's also true of someone who loves to burn things to see the pretty fire.

Someone who is a burglar for a living almost always goes back to that life when they get out. Its part of who they are as well.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 21, 2018 01:58 PM (39g3+)

467 To the extent that this is true, why just sex offenders, then? Why not a murder registry, a theft registry? An arson registry? Have a card, go to the neighbors "I just moved into your area and I'm a burglar, I am required by law to let you know..."

Convicted felons usually have to check boxes for things like employment or other forms (at least before the left decided that was too racist and has been trying to remove them).

Those other things are still all matters of public record, people are just naturally wired to be more suspicious of someone who is a potential threat to women and children.

The whole basis for overturning thd death penalty for rape is callousness to the harm it does to women - so much so that it's hard to describe it as anything other than misogyny (notwithstanding the contemporary overuse of the term). In the first paragraph of the facts, Justice White notes that the victim was raped and abducted at knifepoint and then drily observes that she "was unharmed."

(including the infamous case of the 9 year old boy who was hanged for stealing a pencil) I was able to visit Edinburgh once, loved it, and in the center of one the squares there's a marker at the spot where they had their only homemade guillotine set up, and it was recorded that during the "Time of Troubles" there was at least one execution every day (sometimes several) on that spot for several years running.

That's a whole lot of executions out of a whole lot smaller population than today. It's easy to forget just how bloody a lot of our past has been.

561 The real problem with it is that when looking at statistics of those
executed for rape in the 20th century, 95% of the time (and it was a LOT
of executions) it was for the crime of a black man raping a white
woman. I think in the same period, there is only one white man on record
(in the entire country!) as having been executed for raping a black
woman. It was generally a charge that was never applied to whites.

---

That's tragic. On that topic, there was a recent
year when around 37,000 women were raped by black guys, and potentially
no black women were raped by white men (I think this was back when hispanics were counted as whites, too):

"In
the United States in 2005, 37,460 white females were sexually assaulted
or raped by a black man, while between zero and ten black females were
sexually assaulted or raped by a white man. "

You parse the text of the underlying story and find no mention of how they came to that conclusion. Funny the Daily Mail never talks about the "spodey dope" suicide Muslim bombers as "Devout Muslims".

There's also a reference to "exotic batteries" ordered from Asia which the bomber used in his bombs. I don't know how exotic ordering a LiPo (lithium polymer) battery from China is. Several thousand model airplane hobbyists flying electric powered drones or airplanes order such batteries out of Asia everyday. But the cops apparently did the reasonable thing--look at the materials in the bombs--and try to figure out how the bomb maker got them.

Then--in a reminder that everything on the Internet can probably be tracked, they used Google to figure out who had ordered such batteries (presumably focusing on the Austin area) and that Google search helped identify the suspect.

Hood shooter, who did his killings in front of a roomful of people and who after the fact said he was glad he killed them and would do it again? No chance of executing an innocent man there.

I would go so far as to agree that if there is any slight chance at all, and the guy maintains his innocence, then life without parole. But in these heinous crimes where there is absolutely no doubt at all (Nick Cruz, anyone) then this is no argument against the DP.

596 then give them the power too lock people up. have you witnessed nothing in the last 20 years that would make you doubt that giving the government the power to execute people might be abused or that their rights to a fair trial to avoid execution might be abused.

Posted by: yankeefifth` at March 21, 2018 02:20 PM (MTjB1)

Most of the abuse occurs with juries. It's the jury system that is the weakest point.

What IS needed are serious and utterly merciless punishments for officers of the court that abuse their authority. That is really the missing piece. People like Mike Nifong need to get prison sentences as long as my arm, or even the death penalty (if they tried to put people in jeopardy of that punishment). But Nifong got off after all his abuse with pretty much nothing. ANd that Crystal Shake Whatshername, also. The prohibition to bearing false witness is one of the top ten commandments for a good reason.

So, I don't see the problem with our courts nearly as much as with our not punishing those who abuse the courts. But, the death penalty is an important punishment and certainly should stay. There are crimes that are more than savage and depraved enough - and for which there is more than enough clear evidence or even confessions - that warrant nothing less than the death penalty (and most times it shouldn't be anything near painless, either).

597 why? was there nothing in the rest of my comment you wanted to respond to?

Posted by: yankeefifth` at March 21, 2018 02:15 PM (MTjB1)

If you don't trust the courts, at all, then you have much bigger problems than the death penalty.

But, I'll make it simple for you, are you in favor of the death penalty for confessed murderers?
Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at March

First, you have made something of a leap to interpret my comment as not having faith in or trust for the courts. where we differ is that I think they are human institutions so necessarily fallible and corruptible. You seem to think otherwise or not to have thought at all.

So, regarding confessed murderers, in theory fine whack em. However, there are at least two problems with that. First you have to be able to ensure that they are legitimate confessions and not coerced somehow.

Second, I do not know that killing people is really a good thing. There is a big difference between shooting someone in self defense or the heat of passion and slowly deliberately executing someone.

I do not have any problem with executing someone for committing the crime that mandates that punishment. However, that assumes we know, meaning we know for certain that they are guilty.

Beyond that, there are other issues. There is lots of collateral damage that results from the execution process that is going to wind up hurting other people that did not commit the crime.

Full30.com. They're kind of a joke. Some of the big gun channels uploaded there for a while but most of their accounts are dead as far as I know. Karl from InRangeTV tried it for a while but didn't have much positive to say about it. Mac from Military Arms Channel is supposed to be a shareholder or stakeholder of some sort there.

603 Right, the risk of executing an innocent person makes the death penalty bad, but not the risk of putting them in an institution run by gangs, rife with corruption and violence, particularly sexual violence, for life?

If I'm ever wrongfully convicted of something serious, I'd beg for the needle. Beats being stored in a rape cage with animals for the next 20+ years.
Posted by: Bear with Assymetrical Balls at March

so we cannot manage a prison but we can manage the death penalty process? how about working on managing the prisons?

lots of guys talk tough about wanting the needle right up until it comes time for the business to get serious.

you cannot undo the death penalty. enough people get out of prison after being wrongly convicted to make the death penalty unreasonable.

anyone who is arguing for the death penalty is basically making a utilitarian argument not a rights based argument.

whoever is for the death penalty is fine with innocent people being put to death every so often.

606 The reason that white men weren't being prosecuted for raping black women in numbers isn't because of some racist motive of the police or DA's. It was because it wasn't actually happening very much as compared to the other way around.

Um, the South had places that would absolutely use the criminal justice system to deal with "uppity" blacks and to punish them for daring to touch a white woman.

I work with alcoholics and drug addicts as part of my own recovery, sponsoring several in that recovery fellowship I won't name here. Many of them have prison records, some of them for serious violent crimes that put them in maximum security. It isn't that stories of prison rape are overblown--it happens--but according to my ex-con acquaintances, it mainly happens to the inmates who don't stand up for themselves. Act like a sheep and you get sheared.

Sure, standing up for yourself and taking no shit might mean a beatdown, but it beats the alternative.

are you okay with the death penalty for prisoner's who kill other inmates, or guards?

You know especially if the act of killing the guard is on video and witnessed. And the guards blood is all over the perp who is still holding the shiv and trying to kill someone else when he is caught.

Because, there is a valid reason for the death penalty and there are cases where there is no doubt. No doubt at all. Zero doubt. Even a smidgen.

reminds me of an old Greaseman skit:

guy gets sent to prison and he figures he'll avoid trouble by becoming a sexual partner of the biggest baddest guy in prison. So he goes up to Tom and says "hey big boy..."
A few years later, he was joking with another inmate and mentions, "aren't you scared of the gay prison raping?" The other inmate says, "nah, most of us just banded together and told Tom to leave us alone and we've been fine ever since".

Posted by: Chaos! At the White House at March 21, 2018 02:38 PM (DQC26)

613 Yes, I do accept that some innocent people will be convicted and be put to death, some will be put in prison for life and never freed, some will spend a good deal of time in prison before being freed. Unjust deaths happen; I accept it. Just like I accept it in other contexts. For example, the ready availability of guns in this country inevitably means that some people will unjustly die due to gun violence; the ready availability of cars and booze means some people will unjustly die on the roads. A lot of choices we make about how society is organized involves making peace with the death of others on utilitarian grounds.

Which is why I happily pay my membership dues to the Home School Legal Defense Association - https://hslda.org/

I live in Georgia, which is still mostly laissez faire regarding Home Schoolers. But some districts and individual SJW zealots will try to do anything they can to intimidate individual families who aren't kissing the government school ring.

Posted by: rustbucket at March 21, 2018 02:51 PM (E2hov)

618 His blog dates to when he was seventeen (and younger) and still under his mother's thumb in home-school high school. That's about seven years, and he may have had a personal falling out with the teachings of childhood.

If those 2012 are commonplace and typical for a Christian evangelical outlook ( his views then are fairly tame, though I do wonder a bit why he took an interest in the sex-offender registry), there is some *present* evidence of self-centered, nihilistic cruelty inflicted on the town he has known his whole life that existential crisis is in progress. Whether its the result of his idea of a bizarre Mission from God, or a rage-quit of religion and community life, he hates everybody and wanted revenge.

He's just the right age for mental illness to mushroom into full view, so maybe that's part of it.

I'll be interested to see if there is anything there but an emptiness and anger. Maybe he's was sick and no one caught it in time.
