The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The second you think that all your good fortune is a product of your virtue, you become highly judgmental, lacking empathy, totally without self-awareness, arrogant, stupid - I mean, all the stuff that our ruling class is. Tucker Carlson

Quote II

A state of society where men may not speak their minds cannot long endure. Winston Churchill

Quote III

“I can assure you that President Trump is not about to support anything that is a bailout for insurance companies, nor will I, nor will Sen. Murray,” Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN)

Is there anything that isn't offensive anymore? Special Snowflakes thwart the will of the students.

Despite the combined high school football teams in Juneau, Alaska coming up with a new mascot just last month, it’s already been sidelined due to its “potential” as a racial slur.

In early February, Thunder Mountain, Yaakoosge Daakahidi, and Juneau-Douglas high schools elected the “Thunder Bear” as their new mascot, which beat out “Capital City Senators” and the “Orcas.

Tuesday night science class. The ONT covers lethal injection.

Lethal injection has been proposed since the 19th century, with interest resurging in Nazi Germany, but the seed was planted for the institution we know today by Jay Chapman, the chief medical examiner of Oklahoma. He was charged with coming up with a humane way to put criminals to death by a state representative in 1977.

Empathy, nurture or nature? Science indicates there may be an empathy gene.

We often talk about empathy like it’s something we can all gain more of if we just try hard enough—like muscle, or a higher score in Candy Crush. But a new study out today provides new evidence for the idea that individual empathy differences are determined, at least in part, by genetics.

Agent 86, AKA Maxwell Smart had the Cone of Silence. Now insecure women and men need Privacy and their very own Cone of Silence.

Now, the phone booth — or at least a variation of it — is making a modest comeback.

When the women-only club and work space The Wing opened its first location in the Flatiron neighborhood of Manhattan in October of 2016, the interior featured marble tables, pink velvet couches, and one small, windowless, reflective glass-doored room dubbed the Phone Booth. One year later, when another location of The Wing opened in Soho, eight built-in, glass-doored call rooms were included in the design.

Audrey Gelman, one of the founders of The Wing, explained that the increase in phone booths came “as a direct result of member feedback.”

Major League Baseball was America's Past Time. Then the National Football League came along and displaced them. The NFL is struggling and MLB is regaining their position. The Baltimore Orioles are doing their best to gain new fans.

The Baltimore Orioles announced Monday that this season they will offer tickets to their youngest fans at a price even those without an allowance can afford: $0.00.

The Major League Baseball team unveiled its new "Kids Cheer Free" initiative, which will offer free admission for up to two children aged 9 and under with the purchase of a regular-price adult upper deck ticket. The program will make tickets available through the program on a month-by-month basis for any game at Camden Yards this season, except Opening Day.

Wow. Just Wow! So Ms Downs, did you "achieve" your position because you are a white woman? May The ONT make a suggestion? Why don't you resign your position and hand it to a person of color, maybe even a man?

Personally, I'm glad I don't have kids in school anymore.

The ONT Musical Interlude

1961, The Temptations auditioned for Motown Records. They were then known as the Elgins but soon changed their name. Now having sold tens of millions of albums, the Temptations are one of the most successful groups in music history, known for their choreography, distinct harmonies, and flashy wardrobe, the group was highly influential in the evolution of R&B and soul music.

Spy vs. Spy CIA vs. CounterSpy.

Long before Wikileaks was promoting “radical transparency” in the digital age, CounterSpy was publishing a magazine that named CIA station chiefs and exposed covert operations. Now, 23 issues from its 32-issue run have been pulled from the CIA’s own archives and digitized for your perusal. We can neither confirm nor deny that the agency is happy about this.

CounterSpy started publishing from its headquarters in Washington, DC in 1973. Its staff and contributors were made up of journalists and former intelligence agents who wanted to expose the CIA and other intelligence apparatuses as corrupt organizations. It ran stories about subjects like the CIA’s efforts to undermine labor movements around the world and psychological warfare conducted under COINTELPRO. The spooks at Langley weren’t fans but were certainly readers

Counterfeit money, pepper spray and bras. What could go wrong? Genius Award Winner.

Two women from the Bay Area were arrested in Folsom Friday night after the Folsom Police Department said they stole "several large bags" of clothing, specifically bras.

Blanca Quintero, 22, of Richmond and Antanae Welch, 19, of Pittsburg were arrested around 8 p.m. near the Palladio shopping center in Folsom.

Police say the duo stole the items from Victoria's Secret.

Mistaken text is Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

When Sydney needed a second opinion while out solo dress shopping, she took a few quick snapshots of herself in the frock and fired them off to a friend.

Except she hadn’t texted her friend, but a complete stranger, named Tony Wood.

Rather than just ignore Syd, in her hour of changing room need, Tony, a father-of-six, decided to get his kids involved to help offer her an opinion on the dress.

“I believe this message was intended for someone else,” his text response started.

Tony then messaged Syd a photo of his children giving the dress a big fat thumbs up.

Aww.

But the story doesn’t end there.

And you really should read it.

They're really talking about sympathy, not empathy. That seems to be the case these days, everyone says "empathy" when they mean "sympathy". Part of it is because most of them don't really know what "empathy" means.

48 ;I think Teresa Downs unfairly benefited from her being a woman, not from her being white. She's too stupid, evidently, to have gotten anywhere just on being white - which allows for no special consideration. She could only have gotten to be a superintendant of schools by filling a bean-counting quota since it's clear that she didn't make it on any sort of a superior intellect.

Churchill was a great man and had some of the best quotes, ever ... but the fact is that pretty much every society on Earth has been of this sort. Societies where men may speak their minds have been very few and very far between. The other sorts of societies (not just states of societies, but the societies, themselves) have lasted much longer.

Yep. If your dog even fits in an overhead bin then he shouldn't have been in the cabin, to begin with. And the overhead bin isn't a bad place, anyway.

Pets should fly in cargo or wherever it is they put them. Period. Not in seats or in the cabin.

The most hilarious thing I've ever seen, traveling, was a woman next to me who was traveling with a "comfort dog". I traveled a lot, so I was in First Class. She had a seat for the dog, but it was back in coach.

She immeditaely tried to sell me on swapping seats with her dog. From first to coach. I informed her her that she was doing it wrong, and she could offer the passenger next to her dog her first class seat.

This thought had never actually occurred to her. My god, it is amazing how much people suck sometimes.

Hello, my friend! Was actually thinking about you today - how's Lisa?

And thank you for your prayers.

Thanks Ibguy. Lisa is feeling stronger and is finally eating better. She has gained 10 pounds now that she is some six months post chemo (after a brain tumor). We pray that she continues to improve and gain strength. She is walking a little better, but still is mostly in her wheelchair. Thanks to all for your continued prayers for my sister and her family!

296 Sadly, and of course, it's not conceivable, but the perfect bold move by the feds, to punish and torture the idiots running CA and most the voters who allowed this to happen, would be to tear down the barrier in the western San Diego sector (area bordering the populated urban areas of Tijuana and southern SD County).

The unbelievably disgraceful and idiotic mayor of SD talks, incredibly, about how "bridges, not walls" are needed. I'm not kidding. His city HAS a barrier. Call his bluff. Tear it down.

Move all internal BP checkpoints to CA roads entering AZ, NV, and OR. Quintuple the number thereof.

And for fun, shut down passport control at SFO, LAX, SAN. Just let anybody in.

As fun as this sounds, even if it were to happen, there would be no point - the people dragging America down and backwards are not educable. Not even a little bit. They'd never draw the obvious and correct lesson from *any* conceivable bluff-calling, however spectacular. Central reason for my persistent overall pessimism.

Well, it really isn't all that special. They pick up horn sections every where they play. 5 saxes and 5 brass. So if they do 200 gigs a year, (not unusual) that is maybe 2000 horn players a year that get to play with them. They like to hire the same guys, cuts down on rehearsal.

They travel with their rhythm section only and those guys are badass. Usually out of Detroit.

One time I played a double header with Temps and the Four Tops. Wedding gig. Yes, believe it.

I thought it was mostly the courts. Some obese women wanted to be stewardesses and took their cases to court claiming discrimination. I have a foggy memory of stuff liek that happening in the late 70s. Those cases and some gay guys suing to be allowed to be stewardesses.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at March 13, 2018 11:23 PM (8gDQu)

++++

My recollection is a bit different. Stewardesses who were already employed were getting fired for putting on a few pounds. Not obese, but still enough extra pounds so that they weren't hot anymore. What once was considered legitimate - seeking to employ attractive young women for certain jobs - became politically unacceptable.

I think there was a general ratcheting up of the pressure. Paying claims, union demands, bad press, etc.

I liked the old rules better.

All y'all have no idea what has been going on is San diegoxico. We have had kidnapping(mexicans). We have murders(mexicans). We paid for TJ's kids to get a edimaction. No reps from the city or county showed up today with Trump. Cowards all. If a national law to true the vote was passed we would see the truth behind the death of our voting system. In Sad Diego there is a quality communication company that was just saved by Our President because national security. Most of that company is already Visa recipients, not citizens. This company has been selling out around the world for the last two decades. It kills me that Irwin J. is thanking Trump when his spawn paid for Hillery to give one of her speeches three years ago. Not to mention Al Gore and various fundraisers at Irwin's house, and Qualpac. Oh and his grandspawn female is now running for a county supervisors seat. I guarantee that the are Tek spy's in that company that are sending China every thing they need.
when I voted a few year back, I found a Labor union voting guide in my polling place. It was in SPANISH. When I sent the pic out to our local TV stations no one answered. The registars offfice called me back to insure me that the said bad doggie to the "citizens" that work there. We are so F'd up the winky...

early in my career I was assigned responsibility for managing the update of our corporate database. no one had done anything with it for years.

we had a bunch of people in calling to verify the contact data for each record.

scores or contacts were for people that had shuffled off the coil. making matters worse is that many of the calls were answered by family members or former assistants who were emotionally upset to get the call.

There are thousands of tiny individual contributions to the works of others through conversations and teamwork which would be almost impossible to catalog. His biggest contributions are to the understanding of singularities (first a mathematical and scientific proof of their existence, later their nature including that black holes decay and emit radiation, known as Hawking radiation). Also some substantial work on the history of the universe (thus the book) particularly how the expansion of the universe works. It's interesting to note that he was wrong on notable occasions and proclaimed that quite readily, which is good for a scientist.

The ONLY time I ever bought tanning booth time, was to try to help "even out" some of those tan-castrophies, after mega-tours of weeks and thousands of miles on the roads.

Dozen sessions, barely made a difference.

And I can tan so dark that random people start yakkin' Espanol in my general direction.

It's horrifying, and the result is always atomized rage at the Dreaded Other instead of any productive steps, which are hard and not obvious and require work and not instantly emotionally rewarding like it is to rage at the other wing of the ideological spectrum.

'Cause people forget it ain't about wings, it's about flying.

517 I was thinking of trying my luck on some dating sites again, but I've been doing some research and... holy balls!

I found out that men on dating sites are pretty rational and even-handed in how they rate women, but women... oof... women on those same sites rate 80% of men as "below average" or worse. 80%!

This means you could be objectively an 8.0 on a scale of 1-10, and the only women who will be willing to take you seriously are the ones who consider themselves below average. And in this age of "grrrl power", very, very few women consider themselves below average, because society trains them not to.

Yeah, dating sites are definitely not the way to go for a regular guy. Pretty much any other means of meeting women will work out better for you, unless you're Buckaroo Banzai or someone like that.

And for much of the mid '80s, I worked in High Rise construction, doing both application and sales consulting for commercial caulking and waterproofing jobs on a great many of the tower projects in and around San Antonio, TX.

Example. I caulked about 90% of the exterior window frames on the Omni Hotel at I-10 and Wurzbach Ave. Twenty stories. Didn't use a swing stage, due to conflicting stages of construction.

So rather, did all the work from a Sky Genie, a form of a Bosun's Chair, set up to meet the (then current) OSHA specs.

Rappelling work, going over the side each drop with eight Tremco caulking guns (about 4x the volume of the typical "homeowner" gun & cardboard tube).

That work was all just outside of mirrored glass, in the hot Texas summer sun.

Think I got some UV on the motorcycle? NOTHING compared to the commercial job sites.

Oh, and I won't go into detail about growing up in Southern California (mostly San Diego), and the sun and beach culture in the '60s and '70s.

And, just a wee bit of sailing. As in, living aboard from '99 to '06.

I do keep an eye on things. Turn 60 in April. So far, so good.

Two separate ropes, always affixed to two VERY different anchor points, above.

Steel hawse pipe, for over the parapet anti-chafing purposes. Better than a pulley, as the rope isn't really "moving" once deployed, and a pulley is more of a failure point than a simple hawse pipe.

Later, OSHA screwed the whole system up by requiring a THRID safety line, with it's own attachment and descent brake system.

And now you know why you see countless window washers needing Fire Department rescue, when their THREE lines become entangled and jammed.

OSHA needs to die in a fire, fueled with the turds dropped in the EPA hallways.

601 "Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

. . .

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?"

603 Oh, and I won't go into detail about growing up in Southern California
(mostly San Diego), and the sun and beach culture in the '60s and '70s.

And, just a wee bit of sailing. As in, living aboard from '99 to '06.

I do keep an ee on things. Turn 60 in April. So far, so good.

That, sir, is some Restaurant Grade Haiku.

To the degree, that I've copied and pasted it into it's own Word document.

Don't know when it'd going to be used, but used it will be.

Most any time I spent in downtown San Diego in the '70s, was in the basement of the San Diego County Justice Center, in the Sheriff's Dept. indoor range, burning up 1,000s of rounds of their in-house reloaded .38 Special ammo.

Long story that I'll not now recount. But I had a spectacularly influential San Diego Marshalls's Department friend, who provided all of the right connections.

By time I enlisted as a USAF cop in '76, I was already shooting Expert across every course of fire then in existence.

Didn't even give the downtown San Diego billboards a second glance, sorry. Not.

644 Well, in other news, I was able to borrow a 24 foot extension ladder from the gal next door, and she even steadied it for me, against sideways slippage, as I went up it and drove the half-dozen screws I need to drive. And I did put the base of it against the tire of my Suburban, as a positive stop against the base kicking out. Probably unnecessary, but a comfort in my mind.

And then the dog drama started...

I heard all kinds of barking from the side yard and and the yard of the neighbor to the east of me. My dog was barking, neighbor's two dogs were barking, and the noisy mutts belonging to the old gal across the back alley were barking. Also the two stray gray pit bulls that just showed up out of nowhere, minus any collars or I.D.

Then they came into my driveway. My neighbor Ken from down the block drove up, and he says to me, "They look real thirsty." So I got a pail and half-filled it with water, and both dogs drank a bunch of it. They weren't at all aggressive, more like starved for affection. Very gentle. Ken called Animal Control, and I rounded up some leashes, and we got both of them on a tie-out cable. Animal Control shows up, and drives right by, despite us standing there with the two dogs, and waving and hollering. He went about a block further, and finally turned around can came back, and stopped in the traffic lane. We turned the dogs over to him. The male has a wound on his neck which appears to be abscessed. I would guess the dogs are littermates; they are are exactly the same color, solid gray.

As the Animal Control cop was preparing to leave, a red pickup pulls up behind him, and jumps a tall black guy wearing a Harley shirt. "Did you see my dogs?" he asked. Animal Control cop opens up cages on his truck, and hands the dogs over to him. Ken says, "You know the male dog has an infection on his neck? That wound is all full of pus." Black guy, "G'wan?" He puts the dogs in his truck and buggers off. So does the Animal Control cop. No paperwork, eh? Pretty sure the black dude is fighting those dogs; sure seemed callous about them.

698 Antifa racist dupes LA Times with outrageous sob story; LAT runs front-page puff-piece on him; turns out it was all lies; LAT fails to report that he's on trial for hate crime

If there are any COBs reading this, here's a story that just broke a short time ago and which SHOULD be more publicized -- your chance to get a scoop on a real juicy story! Also, for anyone: Feel free to send this Ace.

All links provided below. But first, I will explain the story as clearly as possible from the beginning.

A member of Antifa who claims to be partly Hispanic was caught by the Berkeley police basically red-handed spraypainting "Fuck White People" and "Kill Cops" and other lovely sentiments on people's private homes, and also then slashing tires on random cars and vandalizing them. The asshole then pulls the race card and tries to claim he was "racially profiled." Berkeley cops wants to charge him with a hate crime, which his graffiti qualifies as under state law. But the liberal local DA refuses (for now) to include hate crime charges to his numerous other charges from the incident.

Then this guy somehow snags the attention of an LA Times reporter by claiming to be an impoverished illegal immigrant minority UC Berkeley student who all by himself is supporting his whole family. But a cruel slumlord is trying to evict them illegal from their "home" -- a trailer parked illegally in a driveway. His tale is filled with all sorts of absurd falsehoods which could easily be checked and disproved -- but because his story fits the leftist narrative of oppressed braves heroic "DREAMers," they feature the story in yesterday's paper.

The story makes no mention of his crimes. He is painted as moral superhero.

BUT THEN, the freakin' commenters dig up the truth about the guy -- not only that he's a racist, an Antifa member, a vandal and so on, but also that he lied about his living situation, and probably isn't even a UC Berkeley student.

BUT THEN, the LATimes promotes this guy's "YouCaring" and GoFundMe pages, and within hours he rakes in $80,000 from guilt-ridden white liberals crying over his dishonest sob story.

Finally, someone send the comments to the top editors at the LATimes, and they append a small note at the end of the story pointing out that he is on trial for unspecified "crimes," without naming them.

Basically, the LATimes helped a con artist dupe $80,000 out of their readers. Because they felt it served their political slant.

THEN, the LATimes deleted all the comments exposing their epic blunder!

There also a huge side plot about how he slandered a Christian Good Samaritan who allowed this maniac to live alone in a trailer for two weeks for $650 rent; in reality, the con artist never paid the rent, moved his whole family into the trailer, and then stayed there for months illegally, threatening the unwitting landlord -- and then spun a slanderous tale to the LATimes, which they ran without verifying any details, that the Good Samaritan was a horrible villain who took the guy's rent money (which in reality he never even paid) and then tried to evict him.

Anyway, the story is pretty interesting, and it centers on media malfeasance in the name of politics. Plus, of course, Leftists Acting Badly.

Oh, I forgot to mention: His name is Ismael Chamu.

Probably a very long time, if ever, because Hawking wasn't diagnosed with (I believe) ALS until he was a young adult. (That he survived over 50 years with that disease is astounding to me.) If there were a genetic test for ALS that could be performed during pregnancy, however, I could see some hardcore pro-abort arguing that it would have been nice if Hawking's mom had had access to it, yada yada.
