Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Important New Thriller Coming Out By the Cucks' Favorite Newsman [Insert Snarky Chyron Here]"The Hellfire Club" is a conspiracy thriller by Jake Tapper, who poses as an anti-conspiracist on Twitter, at least as regards conspiracy theories emanating from the right. This book sounds gayer than gay sex with a gay man in rainbow-striped crocs and wearing an "I'm In Stupid" t-shirt.The debut political thriller from Jake Tapper, CNN's chief Washington correspondent and the New York Times bestselling author of The Outpost-- 1950's D.C. intrigue about a secret society and a young Congressman in its grip.Gee, I wonder if that "young Congressman" is going to be depicted as a brave truth-teller who calls out both sides on Twitter and yet only manages to call out one side on his actual TV show. Charlie Marder is an unlikely Congressman. Thrust into office by his family ties after his predecessor died mysteriously, Charlie is struggling to navigate the dangerous waters of 1950s Washington, DC, alongside his young wife Margaret, a zoologist with ambitions of her own.Wow, she has ambitions of her own. And she's #DTS, #DownToScience. What a hot number! I'm riveted. You fight for those 50s women with ambitions of their own, Jake! Very dangerous position to take in 2018. Amid the swirl of glamorous and powerful political leaders and deal makers...Yes, Jake, people who watch the news are all acutely aware of how "glamorous" political leaders and "deal makers" are. Especially the ones who are north of 250 pounds or 80 years old. By the way, what's with the "swirl"? I only know of two things that "swirl:" Toilets and Dancing Queen. The strings totally swirl. Just listening to it makes your mind twirl in a mental ballroom. ... a mysterious fatal car accident thrusts Charlie and Margaret into an underworld of backroom deals, secret societies, and a plot that could change the course of history.Oh like in Civil War. With Jake Tapper starring as a version of Captain America who becomes a yoked hero when injected with Super Twitter Serum. And again with the "backroom deals," which are presumably "glamorous." I think Jake Tapper is overestimating the public's fascination with "backroom deals." Maybe his sequel will be all about Robert's Rules of Procedure. Now that's some hardboiled, lurid stuff. When Charlie discovers a conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of governance...."Governance"? Or "government"? When I look for a book to read, I always favor authors who tastelessly swap out the right word for the wrong one. I don't know who wrote this, but surely the author must have some hand in his book's blurb, right? ...he has to fight not only for his principles and his newfound political career...but for his life. His "principles" consisting mostly of DMing conservative cucks on Twitter so that they think he's their fwiend. Sounds like PizzaGate: The Novel. Except with glamorous backroom deals. I think I'm going to buy and review this book -- so that you don't have to. Still, we mustn't discount the glamorous sexual appeal Jake Tapper himself brings to the table -- female Twitter "conservatives" want to be with him, while male Twitter "conservatives"... also want to be with him. I'll never get this weird homoerotic fascination the Twitter "right" has for Jake Tapper. Oh, don't get me wrong -- I totally get homoerotic fascination. Hugh Jackman? I'm totally down with that. Adrian Paul from the TV version of Highlander? Let's say I wouldn't mind going through "The Quickening" with a thick corner piece of that with all the extra icing that corner pieces have. But Jake Tapper? It's like having a homoerotic crush on a Sensible Brown Shoe with one heel built higher to correct a leg-length imbalance. I'm just saying -- an adult heterosexual (mostly) man only has a limited number of Free Passes for Gay Crushes. One or two, tops. Two, let's say. Until the next guy comes along who's as hot as Hugh Jackman, in which case it's three. Make these limited opportunities count. Having a gay crush on Jake Tapper is like passing over Jim Rockford for your Free Pass Gay Crush and settling on "Rocky." Or "Angel." Or the bald cop who gives Rockford a hard time. Or any male in the show who's not Jim Rockford. Wait, you know what? Add Jim Rockford to The List. I don't know how I left him off in the first place. Anyway, this Jake Tapper crush thing? You're better than that. Or at least you should want to be better than that. Not to push this too hard, but Jim Rockford invented, or at least popularized, the J-Turn. That's the closest you can come to sex in muscle car, besides, you know, actually having sex in a muscle car. Speaking of Jake Tapper's Gay Crush Cheering Section, here's some of his very principled Twitter work lately. First, attacking Netanyahu for... something about Charlottesville.
Guy spends half of his time criticizing Trump's twitter use and the other half making stupid snark at world leaders. Here, Jake Tapper soiboisplains that he's the only honest man in the room:

Speaking of political fiction and purple prose, some young dingbat at the National Laughingstock has thrown together a word salad of social justice talking points and acadamese to make the case for socialism:
Sample: Against this backdrop of liberal disquietude, the notion that everything either will be or already is all right, granted the correct attitude that "we're better than this," as Joe Biden confidently declares on his newly launched political action committee website appears particularly frail. It is hard to square the late-Obama-era insistence that "America is already great" with the palpable sense that something - in the climate, in the economy, in society, in politics, in the wellspring of American ideas - is going badly wrong. https://tinyurl.com/y9qstonc Posted by: Victor Tango Kilo at March 07, 2018 03:38 PM (O7MnT) 72

"Charlie Marder is an unlikely Congressman. Thrust into office by his family ties after his predecessor died mysteriously of anal worms, Charlie is struggling with anal worms to navigate the dangerous waters of 1950s Washington, DC, alongside his young wife Margaret, a zoologist with anal worms and ambitions of her own, but mostly anal worms." "A zoologist with ambitions of her own." Oh Lord.
Maybe this is totally sexist or whatever, but why does every story set in the past have to feature a "strong, independent, outspoken" woman? Does that really make sense for the 1950s? And yes, I know such career-oriented, "I don't need a man" women existed, but how common were they really? Or what about that new TNT show set in the 1890s? It's got the same kind of female character, which makes even less sense for that period. How about, every once in a while, there's one of these period books or shows with a woman who conforms to the expected gender roles of the era, is interested in being a good wife and homemaker, doesn't go spouting off her independent mind at all times, and yet still manages to be an interesting and sympathetic character? Is that really too much to ask? Ok, rant off. Posted by: T at March 07, 2018 03:56 PM (MmeCn) 218

The original Hellfire Club was in 18th century London, a secret "gentleman's club" which was supposedly the site of constant drunkenness and whoring about. Still, since that was what happened at almost every "gentleman's club", then and now, there was something more that set them apart.
2 versions - the first one, spread by all the Prim and Proper ladies of the day, and the Clergy, was that it was a horrible place where the worst debauchery took place, and even the devil was worshiped. The second version was that it wasn't that different from other clubs, except that it's members were not only wealthy and intellectual but that they delighted in mocking the Church of England, which annoyed the Church greatly. I lean towards the 2nd view myself. Posted by: Tom Servo at March 07, 2018 04:05 PM (k1TUh) 281

265. Gives me hope for the concept I've been shopping: By day, courteous and popular proprietor of a neighborhood laundromat. By night, The General takes flight in his flying armoured train, physically removing Commies and democrats. Could be a good 'graphic novel, ' if nothing else.

Posted by: dagny at March 07, 2018 04:00 PM (CAKgV) I mean, yeah, it's not like such a character would be *totally* out of place in the '50s. But across the whole subset of American women in that decade, even well-educated women married to politicians, how common would she really be? There's nothing wrong with such a character, per se, but I think one along the lines of what I was suggesting would be more historically realistic (with the added bonus of not spouting proto-SJW dialogue all over the place). Excerpt from Jake Tapper's new thriller, 'The Hellfire Club':
"It's a jungle out there, Margaret. A jungle. A hot, stinking, green and leafy morass of treachery, intrigue, and cannibalism." Margaret made a palms-up, placating gesture with her hands. "Calm down, Charlie. The worst that can happen is they send the bill back to committee." She gave her husband a worried look. "And you were kidding about the cannibalism, right?" Charlie didn't answer. He was pacing back and forth in the kitchen, chain-smoking cigarillos, cursing himself for a fool for making that slip about cannibalism. If only she knew, he thought. But he knew he couldn't tell Margaret. The truth was too much. The truth would break her world into tiny pieces like tiny pieces of glass or something else that made tiny pieces when you break it. Regarding Charlottesville, the MFM has been lying since the event about what Trump said.
In a press conference/whatever, facing deliberate misrepresentation of his words *at the time*, Trump said, with regard to his "very fine people" comment, he was *not* talking about Neo Nazis and White Nationalists. They "should be totally condemned." He mentioned specifically that other people with other opinions didn't approve of tearing down statues or demeaning other historical figures, and got at least nominal agreement from the reporter on that point. And yet, the press corps ignores those comments and makes a maximally-hostile interpretation of a previous comment a meme, to the point where *at least* half the country believes something was said when the literal opposite was said. Which makes them liars. The problem is that previous lies and misrepresentations become "evidence" for the next misinterpretation. This leads to the situation referred to by Kellyanne Conway's much-derided "alternative facts" comment, which was also interpreted in a maximally-hostile fashion. And so Tapper carries the "maximally-hostile" interpretation forward here, because he lives in the culture that is driven by the narrative that some people are evil because of the group they are part of or assumed to be part of or associated with (whether they want to be or not), so it's okay to "reinterpret" what they say to prove them to be evil, because, after all, they're already evil because they're not on Our Team. Hoooh boy, here are some of the words of praise for Jake's book. Sounds like the book simultaneously bashes the 50's while hinting that PDT is returning us to that time (again from azmzon, emph. mine ) :
"Tapper uses his storytelling chops to deftly put you in the moment when Joe McCarthy was waving his infamous paper and the Congress was at peak skullduggery.... replete with well-developed characters that made me think that history does indeed repeat itself." - David Baldacci "...No one knows the ins and outs of Washington politics like Jake Tapper." - Anderson Cooper "...This great buzzsaw of a mystery is packed with indecent politicians and secret societies - making the 1950s setting just as relevant today. The scariest part of The Hellfire Club is that it proves Washington - and America - is forever mourning for the past." - Brad Meltzer "From the moment you enter The Hellfire Club's world of suspense and intrigue and sex and danger, you won't want to leave. The swampy world of 1954 Washington DC feels vividly relevant in our current day politics. A must read!" - Shonda Rhimes Posted by: Hands at March 07, 2018 04:22 PM (EzdLW) 376
Damn it, Marder, get hold of yourself. Keep it together, man. For her sake, always for her sake. And say nothing about the cannibalism. It just means liberals in Israel are much the same as liberals in America. The Labor Party (socialist idiots) long ago lost power, but they still have a huge foothold in the bureaucracy and spend all day every day plotting ways to overthrow the conservative government. And they don't give a damn what happens to their country, just like liberals in America don't give a damn what happens to this country. Oh for those who know of my abiding revulsion at Phil Keith's book on USS Lexington titled Stay the Rising Sun, well the revulsion has been upped a couple notches. Decided to try and plow through after Paul Allen's discovery of the ship.
The discussion about the various US Navy Fleet Problem exercises should be a whole book. Robert Heinlein got a few paragraphs. But again poor scholarship and proofreading bedevils this book. Footnote 24 talks about a man who saw combat in the Pacific in World War II, he is listed as graduating in 1998. Someone stole Ace's time machine I guess. When Lady Lex sets sail just days before the Pearl Harbor attack to deliver planes to Midway, Keith describes the planes of the carrier's air group. Goodreads reviewers so far give it a very low score.
Read THIS one! Heh. Writing fiction is hard. I needed to remind myself of that old wisdom after finishing Jake Tapper's debut novel "Hellfire Club." I'm a fan of Tapper on CNN, because he works so hard to be fair and equal to all sides. And his written journalism in the past has been quite sharp. He is not an empty head like so many others who talk news at us for a living. But I found "Hellfire Club" lacking in many ways. The characters are very basic. They don't think, they only react. The story and plot don't connect. And even for a thriller, the writing is simple and full of cliches. (Where was the editing?) Charlie and Margaret seem like time travelers rather than people living in the 1950s. And without giving too much away since the book doesn't officially come out for two months, I found the Kennedy references and history exploitative more than anything else, and the parallels to modern politics obvious and forced. The book never seems to come together, never seems to agree on what it wants to be. Which is too bad, the basic idea and concept are interesting. That time in Washington seems rich with story possibilities. Not being able to write good fiction is okay, plenty of journalists before Tapper have tried and blundered at it, too. Disappointing in many ways but perhaps my expectations were just too high. 2/5 stars None of the quotes on Ace's link are very good either if you pay attention. There is really no good praise. Tapper did get really good reviews for Outpost, however. But with Down & Dirty: The Plot to Steal the Presidency, also not very good. Posted by: artisanal 'ette at March 07, 2018 04:43 PM (fceHP) 485

That's just the skeleton of the story. The Story is that a person had to have an incredible level of determination, drive, and focus to survive on the frontier, because the frontier was a hard place full of hard people, and ordinary people didn't last very long. It also went hand in hand with an almost inhuman capacity to ignore pain and deprivation while striving to achieve ones goals. These weren't happy people, or necessarily good people, but they survived when others didn't. He called that quality True Grit. Not many people left who have it today. Help a girl out. All this is rattling my cage a tad. I don't buy the
gender fluid argument bc I know I can see a woman as beautiful and not want to sleep with her. And I always thought men could see other men as good looking, but not want to sleep with them. No, no other men are good looking. Only women. Next question. Posted by: Jollyroger ---------------- Meh. Might be risking my man card here, but hell, anyone, male or female can recognize a handsome guy as a handsome guy. As a for instance, I would probably trade looks with Gary Cooper. The great difference is that when an ordinary guy sees a handsome guy, he immediately assumes that the handsome guy is a poofter. Nate Morse rated it it was ok
Shelves: did-not-finish What Ready Player One is to 80's pop culture, this book is to 1950's politics. Lots of name dropping (Hey look it's a Kennedy!) and references that show Tapper really is into the history. The only problem I had was that the story is so slow. I made it 25% of the way in and so far, nothing has really happened, and I'm not really sure what is going to happen. Maybe it picks up in the last half, but for me, not enough motivation to continue. 2/5 Posted by: artisanal 'ette at March 07, 2018 04:44 PM (fceHP) 491
Another 2 stars
Mary Robinson rated it it was ok While I enjoyed "The Hellfire Club" by Jake Tapper, I wouldn't recommend it. The plot was interesting but extremely tangled. The characters (the fictional ones) were likeable, but transparent and flat. The moments exchanged with "real" historical characters were not entirely believable. Tappers writing relatively well constructed, but neither challenging nor lyrical, it just was. Methinks he should stick to The State of the Nation from now on. A DO NOT BUY book. Posted by: wth at March 07, 2018 04:42 PM (HgMAr) I think Dr. Smith is a woman. In this one circumstance, that was probably a wise move. Dr. Smith is irreplacable, and since they are playing it serious, I'm glad they didn't try and replicate or change him. Whether this chick is gonna need to be gay too, I don't know. But every show seems to require that now. I think CW is re-booting Charmed, and one of them is gay. I don't understand why gay is 10 percent of the population, but 100 percent of all new shows. "And you were kidding about the cannibalism, right?"
