Though I half-expect a movie someday called "Adventure of Some Hero" or something with totally generic and literal proper nouns throughout the whole thing, but with a sophisticated and interesting plot.
Like if you took something actually good and interesting-- The Maltese Falcon, say-- and just changed the names of things to be boring or dumb.

Maybe this is totally sexist or whatever, but why does every story set in the past have to feature a "strong, independent, outspoken" woman? Does that really make sense for the 1950s? And yes, I know such career-oriented, "I don't need a man" women existed, but how common were they really? Or what about that new TNT show set in the 1890s? It's got the same kind of female character, which makes even less sense for that period.
How about, every once in a while, there's one of these period books or shows with a woman who conforms to the expected gender roles of the era, is interested in being a good wife and homemaker, doesn't go spouting off her independent mind at all times, and yet still manages to be an interesting and sympathetic character? Is that really too much to ask?

In a press conference/whatever, facing deliberate misrepresentation of his words *at the time*, Trump said, with regard to his "very fine people" comment, he was *not* talking about Neo Nazis and White Nationalists. They "should be totally condemned."
He mentioned specifically that other people with other opinions didn't approve of tearing down statues or demeaning other historical figures, and got at least nominal agreement from the reporter on that point.
And yet, the press corps ignores those comments and makes a maximally-hostile interpretation of a previous comment a meme, to the point where *at least* half the country believes something was said when the literal opposite was said.
Which makes them liars.
The problem is that previous lies and misrepresentations become "evidence" for the next misinterpretation. This leads to the situation referred to by Kellyanne Conway's much-derided "alternative facts" comment, which was also interpreted in a maximally-hostile fashion.
And so Tapper carries the "maximally-hostile" interpretation forward here, because he lives in the culture that is driven by the narrative that some people are evil because of the group they are part of or assumed to be part of or associated with (whether they want to be or not), so it's okay to "reinterpret" what they say to prove them to be evil, because, after all, they're already evil because they're not on Our Team.

Jeff Bridges is a flat out great actor in any role he takes. If you haven't seen Hell or High Water from a couple years ago, I can't recommend it too highly.

Writing fiction is hard.
I needed to remind myself of that old wisdom after finishing Jake Tapper's debut novel "Hellfire Club." I'm a fan of Tapper on CNN, because he works so hard to be fair and equal to all sides. And his written journalism in the past has been quite sharp. He is not an empty head like so many others who talk news at us for a living.
But I found "Hellfire Club" lacking in many ways. The characters are very basic. They don't think, they only react. The story and plot don't connect. And even for a thriller, the writing is simple and full of cliches. (Where was the editing?) Charlie and Margaret seem like time travelers rather than people living in the 1950s. And without giving too much away since the book doesn't officially come out for two months, I found the Kennedy references and history exploitative more than anything else, and the parallels to modern politics obvious and forced. The book never seems to come together, never seems to agree on what it wants to be. Which is too bad, the basic idea and concept are interesting. That time in Washington seems rich with story possibilities.
Not being able to write good fiction is okay, plenty of journalists before Tapper have tried and blundered at it, too. Disappointing in many ways but perhaps my expectations were just too high.

None of the quotes on Ace's link are very good either if you pay attention. There is really no good praise.
Tapper did get really good reviews for Outpost, however. But with Down & Dirty: The Plot to Steal the Presidency, also not very good.

That's just the skeleton of the story. The Story is that a person had to have an incredible level of determination, drive, and focus to survive on the frontier, because the frontier was a hard place full of hard people, and ordinary people didn't last very long. It also went hand in hand with an almost inhuman capacity to ignore pain and deprivation while striving to achieve ones goals. These weren't happy people, or necessarily good people, but they survived when others didn't.
He called that quality True Grit. Not many people left who have it today.

What Ready Player One is to 80's pop culture, this book is to 1950's politics. Lots of name dropping (Hey look it's a Kennedy!) and references that show Tapper really is into the history. The only problem I had was that the story is so slow. I made it 25% of the way in and so far, nothing has really happened, and I'm not really sure what is going to happen.
Maybe it picks up in the last half, but for me, not enough motivation to continue.

While I enjoyed "The Hellfire Club" by Jake Tapper, I wouldn't recommend it. The plot was interesting but extremely tangled. The characters (the fictional ones) were likeable, but transparent and flat. The moments exchanged with "real" historical characters were not entirely believable. Tappers writing relatively well constructed, but neither challenging nor lyrical, it just was. Methinks he should stick to The State of the Nation from now on.
A DO NOT BUY book.

I think Dr. Smith is a woman. In this one circumstance, that was probably a wise move. Dr. Smith is irreplacable, and since they are playing it serious, I'm glad they didn't try and replicate or change him. Whether this chick is gonna need to be gay too, I don't know. But every show seems to require that now.
I think CW is re-booting Charmed, and one of them is gay.
I don't understand why gay is 10 percent of the population, but 100 percent of all new shows.

Now the arrest. Feel like it is tied together somehow.
Also read the Oscar numbers were not just down, but fell off a cliff. I'm sure they'll miss the obvious reason why.
