It’s About Playing Catch & Throwing Strikes
[Hosted by: Slapweasel]

***

It is that time of year, boys and girls. We get to joke about pitchers and catchers reporting.

Here's the big secret nowadays; they have been in camp for a-couple-a weeks, as have most players that aren't under either the influence of drugs and alcohol or contract disputes that haven't been settled in arbitration. There is one other type of player that hasn't reported yet... the Free Agents. Thus begins our biggest story of this off-season.

Guys to Watch in Spring Training.

Many excellent Free Agents haven't yet signed with Big League clubs, as this is becoming a trend. For the past three seasons big names increasingly go unsigned under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement between Players and Owners. Medium-Sized Names are also left to twist in the wind because Owners have the leverage as the days advance. The names include many of these guys.

...This may lead to another 1994 Nightmare if they aren't careful. Lest they want the "Millionaires versus Billionaires" sentiment to resume, they'd both better eat their egos quickly or suffer the consequences of the N.F.L. Fans love winners, but they suffer fools marginally; if at all. Nice Super Bowl, Bitches.

As I've witnessed in the Off-Season, the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers have made the biggest strides toward capturing Post-Season Glory. The signing of Giancarlo "Don't Call me Mike" Stanton has been the biggest move. Judge and Stanton back-to-back brings back the Maris and Mantle thoughts of yore. ...Damn Yankees. *shakes fist*

The Houston Astros are still strong in the A.L. Central and every idiot on the block picks Last Year's Teams to repeat. They rarelydo. So-Called "sleeper" picks of mine for the Post-Season would include the Minnesota Twins, Seattle Mariners and New York Mets*.

*HAH!*

The Boston Red Sox have a quality club, as do the Toronto Blue Jays. Tough in the A.L. East again, but I think the Yankees have enough emerging stars to take that to the bank. (Not a betting man. I spend Thirty-Five dollars per year "gambling".)

Yes, I know of the San Francisco Giants' moves. *meh* I also know that the Chicago White Sox may be a juggernaut in training. If the White Sox thing comes to fruition? Whoooo-Boy. That thing may be a Beast in three years.

Last Year's Standings

-Where does J.D. Martinez sign?
-Can Arizona reproduce what it did last year with a rejuvenated Zach Grienke and an excellent pitching staff?
-Do the Dodgers just Dominate until the last month of the Season?

...Many Free Agents and an Entire Season can be yours if the Price is Right!

70 What I like about baseball is that its geometry has never changed. It's 90 feet to first base, a grounder to second gets you thrown out, a slow hopper to third gives you a chance. People can't run that much faster nor throw that much harder.

I know the steroid era changed the power statistics, but it didn't change the regular on the ground game. In some sports, like football, equipment and rules changes have made the game unrecognizable from fifty years ago. Men's tennis equipment and training changes have turned it into outdoor ping pong.

That said, I'm not a very deep fan. If you are wearing a Red Sox uniform you are a fine human being and an exemplar of all that's good in sports. If you play for someone else next year you're a guy who probably hounds his neighbors about recycling and you're mean to your dog.

That's how we first got hooked on college baseball, incidentally, through a SEC game.

Yea, well Fenway definitely hasn't changed much. I had a friend in high school who got a job working the old scoreboard at Fenway. He got paid to go to Fenway and watch baseball.

But it sure does change how left is played in Boston. Homers in other parks are doubles and singles if they hit that wall. Unless you get some first timer out there and then there can be some real comedy.

104 70 What I like about baseball is that its geometry has never changed. It's 90 feet to first base..
---
1857 was the year they established the distance at 30 yards. They also changed the length of the game to nine equal innings, instead of declaring the first team to score 21 "aces" or runs, the winner.

1892, National League and American Association of Base Ball Clubs - Bats were no longer allowed a flat side and had to be round.

Lots of evolution over the years.

CF Austin Jackson who it .318 with 7 HR for Cleveland last year.
RF Andrew McCutchen who hit .280 28 bombs for Pittsburg

So that's pretty good.

That was me at our farm. I swear I picked the same row of beans four times a day, seven days a week. I was much happier hauling hay and working the cattle that were my dad's pets. The ones that made their way into the house and opened the fridge to eat and apparently drink Dr. Pepper., since there were quite a few empty bottles lying around. Which meant more free labor since I got to clean up after those house poopers.

Good times.

118 More kid baseball lore from the 60s. Baltimore Orioles pitcher Dave McNally was from my home town. When the Orioles played during the world series a number of us kids would have transistor radios in our school desks with those big plastic ear pieces.

The teacher obviously saw this and heard the broadcast seeping out from the ear pieces but ignored our transgressions. Later I realised she wanted to hear the game as much as us so she gave us a pass.

131 Sabean in SF is a smart guy. Plugged a bunch of holes with vets who might have enough juice left to help them chase the Dodgers. But if not, McCutcheon and Longoria especially should be attractive to contenders at the deadlin. Sabean will take them for prospects. SD is following suit with Hosmer, but SD has almost no chance of contending. He's out of SD no later than trade deadline '19 I think. Maybe even this year. Braves are doing something similar, too, but at discount prices. Collect vets and flip them to contenders for prospects.

Which told us something you didn't say. In those days, most baseball games were played under the sun. And a doubleheader was actually two games played back to back. Not one game in the day time then later another game at night played to a different audience.

We do love our Kikkan.

Most of the x/c athletes train on the glaciers up here in the summer. Also, Kikkan still runs the Mt. Marathon race; that's how my dad knows her. She is the niece of Betsy Haines, a close friend of my sister. All of that family skis, and madly.

They also train and race at Kinkaid Park, out by the airport here. A world-class setup. I'm out there all summer on the bike trails. Lots of moose, and the occasional bear, but if you are moving fast, you are probably okay. No bears in the winter, at least. They are asleep, luckily.

It's gorgeous, and right on Cook Inlet, so lots of mountains, all around, too.

232 Here's a thing that used to mean a lot to me. I was an expat for a few years and each April the International Herald Tribune would run this poem about being an expat and missing baseball:

Away on this side of the ocean

When the chestnuts are hinting of green

And the first of the cafe commandos

Are moving outside for a fine

And the sound of spring beats a bolero

As Paree sheds her coat and her hat

The sound that is missed more than any

Is the sound of the crack of a bat.

-

There's an animal kind of a feeling

There's a stirring down at Vincennes Zoo

And the kid down the hall's getting restless

Taking stairs like a young kangaroo

Now the dandy is walking his poodle

And the concierge sunning her cat

But the heart's with the Cubs and the Tigers

And the sound of the crack of a bat.

-

In the park on the corner run schoolboys

With a couple of cartons for props

Kicking goals a la Fontaine or Kopa

While a little guy chickies for cops

"Goal for us," "No it's not," "You're a liar,"

Then the classical shrieks of a spat

But it's not like a rhubarb at home plate

Or the sound of the crack of a bat.

-

Here the stadia thrill to the scrumdowns

And the soccer fans flock to the games

And the chic punt the nags out at Longchamp

Where the women are dames and not dames

But it's different at Forbes and at Griffith

The homes of the Buc and the Nat

Where the hotdog and peanut share laurels

With the sound of the crack of a bat.

-

No, a Yank can't describe to a Frenchman

The rasp of an umpire's call

The continuing charms of statistics

Changing hist'ry with each strike and ball

Nor the self-conscious jog of the slugger

Rounding third with the tip of his hat

Nor the half-smothered grace of a hook slide

Nor the sound of the crack of a bat.

-

Now the golfer is buffing his niblick

And the tennis buff's tightening his strings

And the fisherman's flexing his flyrod

Like a thousand and one other springs

Oh, the sports on both sides of the ocean

Have a great deal in common, at that

But the thing that's not here

At this time of the year

Is the sound of the crack of a bat.

-

247 The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company -- A&P -- was once a bigger deal than Wal-mart is today. It was the first large grocery chain. There are many laws still on the books to prevent low-ball pricing and other techniques that A&P used. It's big secret was selling everything under one roof at low prices.

248 I leave a sober tidbit about A&P and now after a friend of mine comes over with a bottle of Macallan 18, you guys are still talking about A&P ?? Let's get back to what's important , MONKEY WARDS

250 Just asking for a friend..is there a chair out in the vines at Wrigley Field that Obama sits in?

251 Thanks, Slap!

I am really excited about the Brew Crew this season. The WS is a very long shot (better starting pitching would be nice, but it ain't cheap) but I'm looking forward to a fun season with a talented roster...And I just can't wait to be sitting in the stands again.

The NL Central is going to be a beast this year, since the Cards and the Cubs will also be damned good.

259 This will be the 50th time this was noted, but Astros = AL West.

I'm still sad and lost and bitter about Hoz. KC sports guys jumped right in with " The right thing!" and "Rebuild" and -- hideously tonedeaf for a LOCAL radio guy: "97% of the world would prefer San Diego!"

Eh, f you. The whole world isn't panting for 75 degrees and high taxes.

260 "The Houston Astros are still strong in the A.L. Central"

... which I'm sure is news to teams in the A.L. Central.
And the A.L. West.

261 "Forgot - also hate the Dodgers. Any club that can't fill their seats doesn't deserve a place at the table."

Not sure what you're talking about. The Dodgers lead the league in attendance pretty much every year. at 3.7 million+.
